1. From Bullying to Black Belt Leadership Dr. Terry's journey began at age 13 after being bullied in school. His father enrolled him in martial arts, which ultimately transformed his confidence and mindset. Martial arts became the foundation for his leadership philosophy. 2. Why Only 5% Reach the Black Belt Level Less than 5% of martial arts students earn a black belt. The same pattern appears in business: 70% of businesses fail within 10 years. The difference between good and great is the discipline to keep going beyond initial success. 3. The Foundation of Leadership: Belief The first principle in Dr. Terry's leadership philosophy is belief. You cannot achieve what you do not believe you are capable of achieving. Leaders must often lend belief to their teams until they develop it themselves. 4. The BLACK BELT Leadership Framework Dr. Terry outlines his leadership acronym: B – Belief Confidence in your potential and vision. L – Learning Commit to becoming a subject matter expert. A – Accountability Take ownership of outcomes and responsibilities. C – Communication Great leaders connect, not just communicate. K – Kinetic (Action) Success requires action, not just intention. B – Boldness Growth requires stepping into the unknown. E – Equipping Train others to eventually replace you. L – Loyalty Build trust and commitment within your team. T – Transformation Commit to becoming a better version of yourself every day. 5. The Leadership Trap: Doing Everything Yourself Many advisors struggle to scale because they refuse to delegate. Dr. Terry teaches the 80/20 rule of leadership: If someone can do a task 80% as well as you, let them do it. Focus 80% of your time on the 20% of activities you're best at. 6. Empowering Teams to Scale Leaders must build organizations of leaders, not followers. Empowering teams means allowing them to fail forward. Growth happens when people step outside their comfort zone. 7. The 1% Rule for Daily Improvement One of Dr. Terry's most practical leadership strategies: Improve just 1% per day in a key area. Over 30 days, that creates 30% improvement. Start with simple questions like: “Is this the best use of my time right now?” 8. The Power of Recognition Celebrating wins creates momentum. As Tony Robbins says: "What gets rewarded gets repeated." Recognition builds: team morale success habits stronger organizational culture. 9. The Danger of Stopping Growth Dr. Terry quotes Ray Kroc: "As long as you're green, you're growing. Once you're ripe, you start to rot." Successful leaders: pursue lifelong learning invest in personal growth continuously improve their mindset and skillset. Key Takeaways Belief is the foundation of leadership. Growth requires stepping into discomfort. Leaders must empower others to scale their impact. Small improvements compound into massive results. Lifelong learning separates elite performers from average professionals. **This is the Optimized Advisor Podcast, where we focus on optimizing the wellbeing and best practices of insurance and financial professionals. Man. In this extended studio conversation on Leadership Bites, Guy Bloom sits down with Danny Nelson, MD WINVIC, Industrial & Logistics who has grown with a construction business from its early days into a billion pound organisation. This is not a polished leadership story. It is a real one. Danny talks openly about starting out as an apprentice, learning the craft from tough early experiences, and what changes when you move from being good at the job to being responsible for people, culture and long term performance. Together they explore what trust actually looks like when you stop micromanaging, why accountability is not about blame, and how letting go becomes one of the hardest disciplines of senior leadership. The conversation goes deep into lived culture. Not values on the wall, but how standards are set, how people are treated, how suppliers are paid, and how consistency builds credibility over time. They discuss succession, stepping into ownership, recalibrating peer relationships, and why leadership maturity often comes through discomfort, feedback and reflection rather than confidence or charisma. This episode is for leaders who have grown inside an organisation, who feel the weight of responsibility, and who know that leadership is less about being right and more about learning, trust and sustained behaviour over time. 00:08:56 From apprentice to boardroom learning leadership through craft 00:15:40 Growing inside one organisation what you learn that outsiders do not 00:17:38 Where culture really comes from standards not slogans 00:20:02 Doing it right why credibility is built through behaviour 00:23:56 What culture feels like when it is working 00:26:23 What got you here will not get you there 00:28:50 Leadership maturity learning through reflection 00:30:28 Trust versus control why micromanagement kills leadership 00:32:10 Letting go without letting things fall apart 00:33:37 Accountability without blame owning performance properly 00:35:14 The John Terry effect leadership without needing the spotlight 00:36:53 Succession without ego stepping into ownership 00:39:09 Recalibrating peer relationships at senior level 00:42:05 Getting honest feedback when you are at the top 00:44:21 Why senior leaders hear less truth over time 00:46:03 Trusting each other enough to challenge properly 00:48:11 Why perfection is not the goal in leadership 00:49:21 Advice to younger leaders what really matters 00:51:18 Growth comes from facing into discomfort 00:52:39 Learning from leaders you do not want to become 00:54:10 Leadership is not meant to be easy To find out more about Guy Bloom and his award winning work in Team Coaching, Leadership Development and Executive Coaching click below. The link to everything CLICK HEREUK: 07827 953814Email: guybloom@livingbrave.com Web: www.livingbrave.com

Undr The Cosh is back for Season 21 (maybe 22…) and we're kicking things off with legendary ref Mark Clattenburg. Clattenburg opens up about his biggest refereeing mistake, involving our own Chris Brown, and breaks down what it was really like to ref the biggest games in football including Champions League finals, FA Cup finals, and facing the wrath of top Premier League managers. Digging into the mind games managers like Jurgen Klopp played and why Clattenburg says Klopp was one of the strangest managers he ever dealt with following a run in they had at Dortmund and Liverpool. While at the top of his game the Chelsea racism scandal involving John Obi Mikelnearly ended his career and why he believes it was payback for the fallout from John Terry and Anton Ferdinand Since retiring from referring Clattenburg has gone onto to work at Nottingham Forest as well as bringing clarity to what his role was there we dig into the chaos which was caused by the tweet from Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis following the game against Everton. Plus, he addresses Danny Simpson's claim that he wanted Leicester City to win the league, the truth about player manipulation, and the weirdest “gifts” he was offered in Europe and beyond. Huge thanks for Mark for coming and make sure you check out his podcast Whistleblowers. https://www.youtube.com/@WhistleblowersPodcast

Steven is joined by former Premier League footballer Steve Sidwell, who shares his journey from the pitch to the podcast studio, reflecting on his career and the transition to life after football. He discusses the challenges of retirement, the void left by the game, and his current training for the London Marathon, motivated by personal connections to health issues. The conversation delves into the art world, the culture of football dressing rooms, and the evolution of player dynamics in the modern game, highlighting the balance between natural talent and hard work Key Takeaways Reflecting on a career as a premiership footballer, there is a deep sense of nostalgia for the experiences of playing, training, and the camaraderie within the team. The emotional connection to the sport and the memories of specific moments, such as victories and the atmosphere of match days, are profoundly cherished. The transition from professional football to training for events like the London Marathon illustrates the importance of routine, commitment, and sacrifice. The discipline required in both football and marathon training highlights the parallels between athletic dedication and personal goals. Effective leadership within a team is crucial, with examples of strong leaders like John Terry and Didier Drogba demonstrating how their presence and work ethic inspired their teammates. The shift towards a more diverse and sensitive environment in dressing rooms reflects broader societal changes, with a noted difference in how criticism and accountability are handled compared to previous generations. BEST MOMENTS "I miss it badly. I'm talking everything, not just playing... the smell of cut grass, all the silly things like that that you just can't replicate." "When you get back into training, the commitment, the dedication... you've got to sacrifice stuff." "I knew my role, I knew what I had to do and I worked it... I had to give 100% and really, really work all the time." "There's no loyalty in football. You think you're going to be loyal to this football club and that football club will do the dirty on you just as quick as you would if you wanted to leave." Manu and Stefan were back for the Bundesliga preview show (a day late due to travel), and there's plenty to unpack. Here's your weekly conversation-style recap from the pod: Bayern on the Brink (Without Kane) Manu: “This could be it — if Bayern beat Leipzig, they win the title.” Stefan: “And Harry Kane won't be on the pitch, which just writes its own jokes.” Still, Kane and Eric Dier will get their first career trophies if Bayern wrap it up. Stefan joked Dier could do a John Terry and show up in full kit at full-time. Stefan: “Bayern won't delay the title for sentimental reasons. They'll get it done.” Both agree this season's been mixed for Bayern, but Kompany has done the job that matters: reclaiming the Bundesliga title. Leipzig's Squeaky-Bum Time Manu: “This game is massive for Leipzig. If they don't get a result, Champions League football could be gone.” Stefan: “They're up against it. Orban and Gulácsi are out. Without them, they're hopeless.” Leipzig are under pressure from Dortmund and Freiburg. Without Champions League qualification, they may need to sell key players like Xavi Simons. Stefan: “They've been sleepwalking for years. Leverkusen's rise is forcing them to wake up.” Manu: “The issue isn't ambition. It's their failure to find the right formula.” The coaching situation is also in focus. Manu and Stefan suggest Leipzig need to make a bold hire — maybe Sandro Wagner or Cesc Fàbregas. Freiburg's Big Chance Manu: “If Freiburg beat Leverkusen and Leipzig lose, the door to the Champions League really opens.” Stefan: “Julian Schuster has actually improved on Streich's work.” Freiburg are two points ahead of Leipzig. Despite struggling against top-four teams this season, they have a chance to change that now. Stefan: “They need to break the curse. If you want to be top four, you have to beat top-four clubs.” They've signed a replacement for Ritsu Doan and could have Noah Atubolu back in goal — a major boost. Manu also explained why Freiburg shouldn't be considered a small club anymore. Manu: “Freiburg's greater metro area is bigger than Dortmund. They're a sleeping giant with real infrastructure now.”
