The journey of one man's attempts to play all the Mega Man games - from Mega Man 1 to Mega Man 11, and as many of the 100+ games in between as he can. Uploads hopefully every two weeks.
I didn't even mention in the episode that there's these adorable "we'll be right back after these messages" style cards after stages in this game, to transition back to the real world. It's so dumb. I love it. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
One day to play, one day to record, one day to edit. Would that all my episodes were produced this fast. Alas, this one's an exception because it smol. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Happy 50th Episode! Remember, it's only Glacier Le Cactank if it's from the Cactank region of france. Otherwise it's just Iceberg Cactus. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
These games take longer and longer to play and get longer and longer episodes. Looking back, trying to do an episode every two weeks was absolutely not going to happen forever, but at least I'm (currently) maintaining that one per month! Oh, and the Phantom & Legend of Network patches are out! I'm excited to get to them... eventually. Forgive me for needing a break after... this. Recently, efforts by a team of Mega Man fans managed to recover and preserve a number of small cellphone games released in the era of the flip phone. While some of them are large enough to deserve their own episodes in the future, today we're tackling six(!) of the smaller ones. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Reeeeeally stretching the definition of Mega Man game on this one, but its april fools (and the real joke is my ability to consistently upload) and so I can do what I want. Anyway, what's in the episode? Listen to find out! Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
It's still the first monday of the month on wednesday, right? ...Anyway this episode was way longer than I expected it to be. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Happy new year, and happy realising-a-month-late-three year anniversary of the 'cast! Also, happy preservation of several lost Mega Man games, which I won't touch on in this episode, but hey, that's cool! Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
I would make a joke about drillman beating me black and blue but that doesn't work so well with the english version names. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Happy Halloween! Have this nightmare! ("well actually", nightmare was the theme of X6, but if you know anything about the X series and its perceived quality, you understand) Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Two games, and also some actual news, too, about the Mega Man series, because I spent so long in a combination of depression, summer heat, and big deal video game releases that I kinda just... yeah. Anyway, for now, let's get back to Mega-ing some Men! Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
I mention it in-episode, but not only is this my longest episode yet (I think), but all the postgame-related stuff will be half of the next episode. Game Big! And so's my love for it. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
When the SNES released, Capcom went "no, we have to make Mega Man more serious and edgy and dark". Then the GBA released and Capcom went "hey that worked once, let's do it again!" Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
I initially had one plan for this episode, then something extremely unexpected happened. Minecraft, specifically. So join me as I tackle a Minecraft x Mega Man crossover - and then explore the results when fans take an entirely different game's engine to create a brand new Mega Man experience! Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
It occured to me right as I went to write this episode summary that the rescue mechanic poses a very real threat to the player's mental stability, which I could argue is a core objective of horror games, and which would certainly fit how this game is a (mostly) horrific experience. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Thinking about it, calling something 'Xtreme' - specifically without the e - is one of the most 90s things I can think of, so it's kind of funny that these games were released in the current millenium. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
It's not as great as it sounds. Unless "surprise there was a third edutainment game, this time with the Mega Man Legends license" sounds great to you. In which case, well, there's no accounting for taste. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Happy two year anniversary, here's an episode that was recorded... eight months ago. Whoops! Come dive into the spinoff that became a phenomenon with the Real Time Tactical Deck Building Action JRPG Saturday Morning Anime set in a very 80s to 90s image of the internet, despite being a 2001 game. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
The next episode is taking its sweet time, because Battle Network is not exactly a small undertaking to talk about. So please enjoy this bonus slash filler episode discussing what makes a good weapon in the Mega Man games. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
I had never played Legends 2. Now that I have, I both understand the desire for Legends 3, and also appear to have yet another over an hour long episode again! Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
A pretty short episode for having taken three weeks but my life has been Extremely Busy. Promise the next one will make up for it in terms of length. In the meantime, have the closest thing we have to that Mega Man shmup I said I really wanted back in the Mega Man 8 episode. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
The phrase "mega man edutainment game" is exactly as cursed as you'd think it is. Also there's two of them. I cannot believe I have done this to myself. Check out New Game plus at https://ngppodcast.com/listen/ ; the episode mentioned in the opener is #317 Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
I did say I was going to include related titles where Mega Man is playable, so enjoy me being bad at capcom fighters and properly expressing myself within the bounds of fighting games. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Thus do we begin the dreaded 'second half' of the X series, for better and worse, with the longest episode to date. Also I go into it in the episode, but some future episodes may be 3 weeks apart instead of 2, because games are getting Bigger and the amount of free time I have does not adjust to scale. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
A strange little handheld, an outsourced company, and a sequel to one of my favourite Mega Man games? What could possble go wrong? Please note: The next episode may be a week or two later than usual. December has thuroughly whooped my butt in terms of productivity, and it doesn't help the next one's an hour into the edited version and still not done. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Okay but what if, and hear me out: a spinoff that isn't a spinoff, that has Mega Man as only a momentary cameo, and not even the Mega Man from the timeline this game is set in, and it's also Pikmin. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Listen, I'm willing to give mobile games a fair shake. This game disappointed me on its own merits. And did okay on some others. But there's a reason I'm playing Pokemon Masters EX now and not this. At one episode every two weeks, this can be considered an anniversary! Thank you all for supporting me through this ridiculous undertaking. As mentioned at the end of the episode though, I Need A Break (also to catch up on my headstart!), so the next episode should upload on November 29th, as the second year begins. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
I want it to be known I have certainly considered reviewing the old Ruby-Spears Mega Man Cartoon. But until such time as I actually do so, let's talk about a Japan-only series of three OVAs pretending to be a playable game. Yet Another Final Fantasy podcast: https://anchor.fm/yaff-podcast/episodes/Final-Fantasy-V-End-of-Season-Mailbag-with-Garlyle-e1897ll The translation mentioned that's on YouTube if you want to watch this nonsense yourself: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIGtU3ybgWXqUJVwc2iWl9oCMaBW4Ip8T Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
The last Classic timeline platformer for a long time is also often thought of as a game ruined by its difficulty. ...Maybe I need to re-evaluate how good I think I am at these games, or maybe I've just retained this game in memory better than I thought. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
In a world covered by endless podcasts, this one's leaving behind 2D platformers and heading to the only 3D-focused Mega Man series. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Once again, Mega Man tries a weird genre shakeup spinoff title. And it took some warming up to, but for once, I think it... might have... worked? Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
This game told me to Jump, Jump, Slide, Slide off of a bridge, and I listened because I didn't want to fall in a pit. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
That's right, it's an arcade sort of fighting but not really fighting game, but really it's a boss rush game. Or rather, two of them. Or rather, like, four of them, actually. Might as well do it all in one fell swoop. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
I have only two words: gravity beetbood Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
I remember, at the time, the change from NES to modern times for the classic series being a scary proposition. Doesn't mean it has to be bad. Some may disagree. I am not 'some'. Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
This last entry in the World subseries isn't a port, it's a whole new game, about robots... IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Pretty sure this was the X game I played the most as a kid because it was the one I actually owned at the time. Time to see if it holds up to the original or not! Stop by and listen to the NGP Podcast as mentioned in the intro: ngppodcast.com ; look for Retro Recap 11! Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
Once upon a time, Mega Man was unhappy with their relationship with Nintendo and decided to start flirting with the competition instead. Sometimes it worked out bad. Sometimes it worked out good. This is both stories. Also, thank you all for your support - we've breached 500 total downloads, which is Nothing in podcast land to many people, but is really significant to me all the same as someone who hasn't advertised at all. You're all pretty Mega, Man (or Woman, or personal signifier of choice) If you're catching this shortly after it goes up, you can get the physical release of The Wily Wars for the first time in North America, at Limited Run Games! Preorders close on the 20th of July! Twitter: https://twitter.com/whatamipodcast4 Contact Us: whatamipodcastingfor@gmail.com
One of the very last titles for the NES and our last stop on the system, featuring possibly the most confusing Robot Master to date.
Once again, Capcom beat Nintendo to the punch in putting a mascot into a different kind of game. This time, soccer. Once again, I had to suffer through it.
It's back to the Game Boy to cover more attempts to translate the Mega Man experience to a portable format, but this time the games are going to go in a bit of a different direction strategically. And also none of them have literally bugged sound data.
Ten episodes in! ...Well, eleven if we count the bonus. Anyway, let's celebrate by getting our butts off the NES and onto something a little more powerful with another of the games often considered the greatest in the series, with my first episode that ended up going over an hour long.
Did you know I once considered doing a Mega Man podcast instead of the Immaterial And Missing Podcast? Anyway, I bring that up because I figured I'd do a bonus episode featuring a Mega Man inspired Touhou fangame! I don't do bonus episodes enough, mostly cause it takes A Lot Of Time to do them, (Yes, this is an April Fools' Joke, but it's actually a very real episode about a very real and pretty fun game)
It's time for our first Mega Man title that never left Japan, and it's... a board game? Well, a video game of a board game, but still. How the hell did this happen?
Once again, we wash the taste of the DOS ports out of our mouths by returning to the main series, with my old childhood favourite. Does it hold up though, or was I just remembering it better than it is?
Oh No 2--or, I guess, Oh No 3? What Happened to 2? Why did Capcom allow this to happen twice? Why did I do this to myself twice? All those questions and more will be answered today, for better or worse. The thing about playing every Mega Man game is sometimes it means revisiting old ground for different releases. This time we're retreading some old stages and seeing some old faces, but on a new platform - and with a lot of unexpected surprises in store.
Let's charge back up after the travesty that was Mega Man DOS with an actual Mega Man title. Heh, 'charge back up', because this one introduced the charged shot...
Happy Holidays and a Better New Year! I don't mention it in the episode because they're recorded weeks in advance, but still - you've all been super supportive and I appreciate it. Hope you're not bored yet with classic Mega Man. I'm sure not, because this game definitely had the developers still thinking to themselves, "so how do we top the last game?"
