Show Notes 0:00: The two hosts of TheOASG Podcast return once again to talk about what they’ve been up to over the past few weeks, which involves Justin talking about the Star Detective Precure and Detective Conan collaboration and Helen talking Shonen Jump catchup, Bookworm Part 3, and Ramparts of Ice! News 23:02: Dark Horse staff recently formed a union (Dark Horse Workers United), and the company has recognized it — the hosts will see how negotiations will go moving forward; Japanese VA Kenjirō Tsuda filed a lawsuit against the operator of the video-sharing app TikTok for posting videos that allegedly used AI (artificial intelligence) to imitate his voice without permission, and it will be something to monitor moving forward. 29:46: Let’s just say voice actor Kazuki Atsumi might have had a future in the talent industry, but after his contract was terminated by his agency following a report of him being arrested for suspected sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl, the future ain’t looking great for him; meanwhile One-Punch Man artist Yūsuke Murata decided he had to comment on a very wild post about Pakistani Britons, and the comment was so bad that people in many languages criticized him. 34:44: Animator and character designer Kunihiko Hamada shared that he is no longer working at Madhouse — the two hosts discuss Madhouse letting him go after 35 years and how they let him go; Justin and Helen have questions and some concerns on Aki Sora manga creator Masahiro Itosugi saying he has banned by Google while uploading older works to Google Drive. 39:39: A few Japanese magazines will be ending soon or sometime this year; the Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun Finals manga will enter a hiatus following the 100th chapter; Nippon Sangoku will go on hiatus as creator Ikka Matsuki recovers from steroid withdrawal syndrome; and Eiji Hashimoto announced they will temporary switch to a triweekly schedule for Rappa: Yankee Ninpū Chō after a two-week hiatus due to numerous ailments he’s going through right now. 44:43: Galaxy Express 999 lyricist Jun Hashimoto sadly passed away in a Tokyo hospital at 86 due to liver cirrhosis; Screenwriter Takao Koyama posted on X/Twitter a few weeks ago that scriptwriter Hiroyuki Kawasaki had died on January 23 at 60 years old; and Japanese film director and special effects artist Yoshihiro Nishimura died at 59 — Variety reported that Nishimura had been in the hospital for nearly two weeks fighting a liver disease. Licenses 47:37: Another Taiyo Matsumoto manga has been licensed — but not by VIZ, by Manga Mavericks Books instead!; Aloha Comics announced they’ve licensed Ikuno Tajima’s After Märchen (Ever After in English) as their first ever manga license; K MANGA added a few new titles to its service; and so did Manga UP!; Kogattuo & Ichika Kino's World Wide Web MIKO! has been added to MANGA Plus. 51:21: Not new licenses, but might as well be considering some of these titles have been out of print for a long while! Look out for a couple Jiro Taniguchi titles, Hideo Azuma’s Disappearance Diary, and Kiriko Nananan’s Blue at some point this year; And with Otakon happening next month, Discotek announced a couple titles ahead of it, including the next entry of Digimon for them (Tamers) and the Hana Yori Dango anime. Streaming News 53:00: GKIDS acquired the North American theatrical rights for Adolescence of Utena and will screen the movie in Japanese with English subtitles in US theaters June 21-22, which has Helen in a pickle; JUJUTSU KAISEN Hidden Inventory / Premature Death compilation film and English dubs for Given: Hiiragi mix and Given The Movie: To the Sea, and the Bean Counter OVA are now on Crunchyroll. 55:49: HIDIVE has announced their comings and goings from the service this month, from the Heavy Metal L-Gaim TV anime and OVAs to The Life of Budori Gusuko being added, while Get Backers, Humanity Has Declined, Mayo Chiki!, and Wasteful Days of High School Girl anime are leaving HIDIVE on June 30; premieres of the Cherry and Virgin film and the Sekiro: No Defeat anime will happen at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival. 58:34: And yes, Conan Cinema Saturdays has returned this summer…which means Justin will just be vibing and getting these movies views instead of watching most of them properly this year! Weird News 1:00:25: Osaka's holding an exhibition of 17th Century Dutch masterpieces, and it's set to take place at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka between August 21 to September 27. Somehow, Frieren and Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring is a part of it as a crossover, and Helen had a great story to tell involving earrings and which one it needs to go on for this rabbit, but found out that those without a Bluesky account can’t see it. Guess who found this out mid-podcast? 1:03:43: We will now have Baki’s dad in Tekken 8, meaning these anime/manga characters appearing in fighting games has gone up somehow. 1:05:19: Usually we put a manga getting a US live action in this section because again, these normally don’t work out very well — somehow it’s that and weird because it’s one of most unlikeliest manga to get a US live-action series…it’s based off a Josei manga series! If there’s anything you’d like to share about the latest news or about the episode, please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter (@TheOASG) or comment below with your thoughts! For our last episode of Season 6 Part 1, we're taking a look at the 3 OVA releases for Heavy Metal L-Gaim. Released between 1986 and 1987, the first two offer recap specials of the TV series alongside original comedy shorts, while the third, Full Metal Soldier, is an original story set during the first half of the show, and it's a real treat if you enjoyed the series as much as we did. Then, we look back on Part 1 of our Tomino-thon with a bunch of fun rankings! We rank each of the 7 shows we reviewed this season, before counting down the craziest Tomino names, best theme songs, and greatest mech designs, as we used to do every year on Weekly Suit Gundam. It's a very fun, very silly episode, as we take stock of the journey so far before continuing on to the second half of our season this fall. Enjoy! We'll be going on a short summer break as we finish Part 2 of our Tomino-thon season – dubbed “The Tears of Time” – which will be premiering this fall for another round of exciting episodes, beginning with Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam! Eden makes Peter watch the 1994–95 OVA You're Under Arrest, a four-episode anime about two traffic cops in Tokyo. Peter goes in skeptical but comes out admitting it was fun, charming, and visually stunning. The siblings unpack what makes 90s hand-drawn animation special, how the direct-to-video OVA format enabled lavish production values, and why the 2017 revival is a cautionary tale in digital downgrades. Plus: Peter wraps up Dungeon Crawler Carl book 8, Eden makes a pilgrimage to giant troll sculptures in Iowa, a hotel bed that doesn't suck, and Peter's genuine enthusiasm for the new I Built the Sky album.Show NotesYou're Under Arrest OVA (1994–95): A four-episode direct-to-video anime about traffic cops Natsumi Tsujimoto and Miyuki Kobayakawa at Bokuto Station in Tokyo. Despite the title, zero arrests occur across all four episodes — the show is closer to a workplace slice-of-life comedy. Created by Kōsuke Fujishima. The OVA format explained: Original Video Animation — direct-to-video releases that bypassed broadcast TV. In the 90s, OVAs were often more lavish than TV anime because VHS tapes sold for $40–$70 per episode, guaranteeing ROI. OVAs also had fewer content restrictions than broadcast — though You're Under Arrest stays remarkably tame.Kōsuke Fujishima's broader work: Beyond You're Under Arrest, Fujishima created Oh My Goddess! and served as lead character designer for multiple Tales games, including Tales of Phantasia, Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia, and Berseria. The infamous "silly goose" meme: Eden discovered that a reaction image she's been seeing online for 20 years — a character sticking out her tongue with hands on her head — originates from You're Under Arrest (character Yoriko in episode 3).English dub vs. subtitles: Peter found the English dub surprisingly good — the dialogue was looser and more entertaining than the literal subtitle translations. Eden watched subbed. Peter says the dub actually improved the experience for a light show like this. The 2017 revival: Eden showed Peter the opening to the 2017 You're Under Arrest series — cheap digital animation, worse music, and gratuitous bikini volleyball shots. A textbook example of how 90s hand-drawn cel animation aged better than early digipaint.Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 8: A Parade of Horribles: Peter finished it. Covers floors 10 and 11 — down to 23 crawlers alive from an initial ~2 million. Bleak but sets up the final book. Peter's verdict: good, but he mainlined too many DCC books in a row and needs a break.Anji Kills a King by Evan Leikam: Peter's next read — a debut fantasy novel from a book influencer he follows. A one-off palate cleanser before diving into Discworld.Forza Horizon 6: Set in Japan, released May 2026. Peter earned his legendary gold wristband. Won the Titan (14.4-mile cross-country race) in a Koenigsegg but hasn't cracked the 54-mile Goliath loop yet.I Built the Sky — Promise Me You'll Thrive: Solo guitarist Rohan Stevenson's latest. Instrumental, joyful, heavy in places. Peter's been listening on repeat since it came out and calls it "next level" — it made him love guitar-centric instrumental music again.Evergrey — Architects of a New Weave: The Swedish progressive metal band's 15th album, out June 5, 2026 via Napalm Records. Peter describes them as melancholy progressive power metal — never cheesy. Tom Englund's voice "could sing the Hallelujah chorus and you'd still be like, this is so sad."Godthrymm — Projections (2026): British doom metal, third album via Profound Lore. Pulls from the My Dying Bride vein — former MDB vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe guests on a track. (Peter refers to their 2020 debut Reflections and 2023 follow-up Distortions.)The Apothecary Diaries Vol. 16: Eden devoured it in a day and a half. Their endorsement: "You want something fun and simple and light and still intriguing? Apothecary Diaries is it."Thomas Dambo trolls in Clinton, Iowa: Danish artist Thomas Dambo builds giant recycled-material troll sculptures worldwide. Clinton has three prominent trolls plus a fourth hidden in a park — the extra one exists because locals were so helpful Dambo had spare time.Moxy Hotels: Marriott's quirky sub-brand. No check-in counter — the bartender handles it with a complimentary drink. Rooms include a guitar and amp. Bedtime stories available by phone. Eden declares the bed the most comfortable hotel bed they've ever slept in.The Lodi Pencil Sharpening: The 5th annual sharpening of a giant pencil at Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis. Happened Saturday, June 6, 2026. Eden and Cassi attended for the second year.PowerWash Simulator 2: Eden's catharsis game of choice. Currently 71% through a very large barn. The Batman (2022): Eden rewatched it at the hotel. Still great, still too long — three hours, with "a whole fifth act that didn't need to be there." Cassi fell asleep. The bed was comfortable, so it balanced out.

There was a time when hyper-violent, sexually charged OVAs ruled the Japanese home-video market—and few creators embodied that era more than Yasuomi Umetsu, the director behind Kite and Mezzo Forte. Kite even spawned an American live-action remake starring Samuel L. Jackson (which… let's be honest, barely anyone saw). Now, Umetsu is back. His latest work just hit U.S. theaters last week, and we're breaking down exactly what we thought of it.
The Cameron Series rolls along, but in between recordings the trio of Isaac, Eric and Caleb take a break to discuss some of more pressing matters, such as the pros and cons of different heights, local drinks they like, their thoughfs on can openers, and more! Welcome to episode 155! And yep, it's more Umamusume. This time the two OVAs (BNW no Chikai and Road to the Top) and the movie, Beginning of a New Era. The first OVA is essentially an epilogue to the first season of Pretty Derby, being about Biwa Hayahide, Narita Taishin, and Winning Ticket. The second is a prequel to the movie, chronicling Narita Top Road, Admire Vega, and TM Opera O. The movie itself is quite amazing, all about Jungle Pocket, Agnes Tachyon, and Manhattan Cafe. Oh and Dantsu Flame also appears. BNW no Chikai is exclusive to the season 1 Blu-Ray, Road to the Top is available for free on YouTube, and the movie is only available via importing the Blu-Ray from Japan. This week, my brother and I are watching the 1991 animated movie, Wizardry, a Japanese rendition of the computer RPG series from a decade before. Sometimes the term OVA (original video animation) is used for these often standalone films that were produced for direct VHS/laserdisc/VCD/DVD release. Sometimes, I think there were earlier series that came prior, and the OVAs had higher budgets and could summarize an entire series in a 1-2 hour movie. This was a fun conversation about these early animes, which I'd gotten only a bit of exposure to as a kid, playing early role playing games, and more. Interestingly enough, the Wizardry franchise (originally created by Cornell University students Andrew C. Greenberg and Robert Woodhead) has lived on in Japan, where it is still popular. Oddly enough, the Ultima series, which is still popular in the US, never became quite as big, though there are some teasers that suggest it could have been in a parallel universe. This is a fun, compact film that follows the plot of the first game, from what I understand (having not played the game myself). But if you have, when you watch the film (you can watch the whole movie for free on youtube here), you will see a number of odes to the original game (and the person who did the work annotating the video has footnotes explaining the references). You can find the coffee table books Jeremy referenced in the episode about games history, including the computer role playing game book at Bitmap Books. On April 26th, 2025, we hosted an epic battle on our Discord server. 46 movies, TV specials, and OVAs were pitted against each other with randomly generated battle brackets. Only one would emerge as the victor in THE GREAT LUPIN MOVIE/SPECIAL/OVA TOURNAMENT! We had an incredibly fun time hosting this stream with many of our listeners in attendance. Whether you're listening for the first time or reliving the historic competition, we hope you have just as much fun listening to it. Choices were made. Crash-outs were had. Comraderies were tested. Let the battle begin (again).
Our dirty pair of Dirty Pair episodes continues this week with a look at the theatrical feature film and cavalcade of OVAs that followed in the wake of the original TV series. Dirty Pair was so popular on the home video market that it got two feature-length OVAs – 1985's Affair of Nolandia and 1995's Flight 005 Conspiracy – and an entire ‘second season' of 10 TV-length episodes, known as Dirty Pair 2. There is some fantastic stuff among these home video releases, but the real highlight today is the 1986 feature film, Project Eden, one of the most spectacularly produced anime of the 1980s that feels a lot more like a feature-length music video than it does a conventional narrative. Whether it truly works as a Dirty Pair story is something we debate, but there's no disagreement that's an absolutely eye-popping tour-de-force of synesthesia. Enjoy, and come back next week for something completely different, as we look at the classic 1997 adaptation of Miura Kentaro's seminal Berserk! This anime changes up the normal anime narrative for Hero style anime in that rather then a journey to defeat th Demon lord our MC Leo is trying to join them. But that is just the start of it. This anime is well worth the watch and is has some comedic moments but it was still an overall solid story. Today on the 5: I saw news that Konami is releasing a new collection of the classic Gradius games, and looking into the game series led me to find that a series of OVAs were made loosely adapting the storylines of the games. The biggest shock is how good they are!

Even though TimeHealsAllWoundsButWeSTILLAskWHYYYY, through a combination of its thirty year anniversary as well as upcoming new announcements, Daryl is reviewing the Patient Zero of fighting game anime that is the original Fatal Fury anime trilogy: the OVAs and the 1994 motion picture. In an age of scientific wonders, the human body is still the world's most dangerous machine. Especially when it can fire ki bullets. Unless the scientific wonder in question is Mai Shiranui because she's cutting diamond and putting out eyes with those things. What is that light? Is that Garzey's Wing? Is he the Holy Warrior? Is that Garzey's Wing? What was that? Garzey's Wing? Yes, Your Stupid Minds is dipping its toe into anime for the first time ever with one of the worst OVAs of all time combined with one of the worst English dub tracks of all time. It's Yoshiyuki Tomino's 1996 three episode OVA Garzey's Wing. Chris is a recent high school graduate who is SO easy GOING and continually fails his college entrance exams. When he goes to his home town to attend a high school reunion pool party, a giant mystical duck bifurcates his consciousness and half of him goes to the parallel world of Byston Well, while his other half remains in the real world and dead-set on attending this pool party. To put it as simply and clearly as possible, Chris must help the slaves of the Metomeus Tribe avoid the Dragorols and Daragau of Zagazoa's War Beast Army Corps under the command of the ruthless King Fungun to get to the Boundless Plains of Gabujuju. Yamato Takeru no Mikoto has granted Chris the power of Garzey's Wing, which allows him to fly or something. His Ferario friend Fellan-Fa, female warrior Leelince, and headband-wearing mystic Hassan-san help in this plane of reality, while real world girlfriend Rumiko lends her chi to help him on both planes while he also attends a pool party. Seems clear enough. Combine this with an absolutely abysmal late 90s English dub track where yelling constituted acting and we're left with an absolutely baffling experience that would still be confusing even if this series actually ended properly. Join us as we somehow make sense of our convoluted situations and discuss this cacophony of fantasy nonsense.
We discuss our anime OVAs and spin-offs wishlists. Anime has its share of elaborate storylines with unresolved or missing pieces that could only exist in headcanon - which is where an OVA or spin-off can come in to save the day.
