Gaming has entered the doldrums--a downturn in the art form where companies struggle to produce anything of worth...or even new. Playing safe is now the strategy...but if remakes are our unfortunate future, why not at least redo the games people missed the first time around? We don't need more Sonic or Mario. We need more Dragon Valor, more Einhander, more Haunting Ground! For more new musings on old things, swing by lostnostalgia.comThanks to Decktonic for the opening/closing tune.
Part two of our handheld RPG music celebration continues — and concludes — today! Last time, we brought you some of our favorite tracks from Nintendo DS RPGs, and this time we talk about the DS' competition, the Sony PSP. The PSP was a haven for RPGs, especially considering its support of playing PSOne/PSN titles. From a surprise track by Nobuo Uematsu, beautiful vocal tracks, to the second and last Mega Man Legends title, we have a great lineup today. Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I can't think of many gaming franchises I love more than Mega Man. And when you think of the Mega-est of Mega Man games, you have to think of Mega Man 2. While I (slightly) prefer Mega Man 3's harder difficulty and sliding abilities, there's no doubt that Mega Man 2 is the game that made the Blue Bomber a star. 8 robot masters, the most powerful weapon in Mega Man history, an awesome soundtrack, and a more forgiving gameplay loop. As one of our listener's said; "Mega Man 2 is the Mega Man what Terminator 2 is to The Terminator." I'm rolling solo this week, but if there's a franchise I can talk to myself about without a problem, it's Mega Man. I actually go through my personal strategy to tackle the game this week, and along they way I sprinkle in some listener comments and get into what I like, love, and yes, hate, about MM2. And before we kick some robot ass, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks me if my confidence behind the mic has improved over the past 6 years. What GameCube games are must owns? And so we actually miss blowing in the cartridge?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Mega Man Legends[a] is an action-adventure shooter game released by Capcom. It is the first game in the Mega Man Legends sub-series of Mega Man games from Capcom, and the second major 3D polygonal Mega Man title released in the franchise, following Mega Man: Battle & Chase.[1] It was released for PlayStation in 1997 in Japan, and in 1998 in North America. A Nintendo 64 port was released in 2000 with the same title, but it was renamed Mega Man 64 for the English release in 2001. It was also ported to Windows in 2001, and PlayStation Portable in 2005, the latter only in Japan. It was last released as a PS one Classicthrough North American PlayStation Network in 2015. Legends stars a different spiritual incarnation of Mega Man named Mega Man Volnutt, the game's player character. Mega Man Volnutt is a "Digger," a person in charge of investigating ruins from a flooded Earth. During his journey with his friends, their ship crashes on Kattelox Island, where Mega Man confronts pirates attacking it to obtain its hidden treasure. As an action-adventure game, Mega Man Legends's gameplay is vastly different from that of the original series, despite sharing a few elements. Mega Man Legends received a positive critical response due to the series' jump from 2D graphics to 3D. Ports for Nintendo 64 and Windows received negative comments for lacking updates from the PlayStation version, whose graphics were considered outdated by the time the ports were released. Mega Man Legends was followed by the prequel The Misadventures of Tron Bonne and a sequel titled Mega Man Legends 2 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wvuncommonplace/message
What a long, strange trip it's been. Mega Man Volnutt is a badass baby boy who might have two girls in love with him. Tron Bonne has an army of lego minions who clean, cook, and destroy her enemies. Lex Loath is the American Dream. Mega Man Legends is an oddball bunch of games that has some fierce fans. Are these games classics? Do they hold up? Does the plot make any sense? We have no idea. Mega Manuary is dead. Long live Croc-tober! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I'm a lifelong Mega Man fan, but I've only ever played the main series and the first 3 X games. I've always wanted to try some of the other iterations of the Blue Bomber, and finally fired one up for this week's episode. And while it controls like garage, Mega Man Legends is charming as all hell. I was worried about Mega Man's transition over to 3D, but I actually ended up enjoying this game quite a bit. I missed my robot masters weapons, stage select, weapon weaknesses and all the MM standards, but the voice acting, music, charming locations and cool story kinda made up for it. Those fucking controls, though... Captain N sponsored this episode about a year ago, and being the slow-ass that I am, I'm finally catching up. He swings by the show to explain why he likes Legends so much, and then I break down what I like, dislike, and fucking hate, about this weird little Mega Man game. And before we get legendary, I deliver another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if they're part of the problem after paying a pretty penny for an old, rare game. Who do I think will win the Cup this year? And is an Xbox Series X worth it, just for Starfield? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! We take a break this week from the onslaught of current games to delve once again into the world of "what if?" Inspired the release of 'Bomb Rush Cyberfunk' - an indie spiritual successor to 'Jet Set Radio' - we discuss our Top 3 games or franchises that we wish would be reborn as an indie spiritual successor. The possibilities are endless but our answers range from classics like Mega Man Legends to cult hits like Manhunt. These may never come to pass but anything could happen and it's always fun to imagine. Want to share your thoughts or leave a comment on this episode? Every couple months, we dedicate an episode of the show to "revisiting" a game we covered back in the early days of the podcast, when we had even less of an idea of what we were doing than we do now. And this week, we're taking another look at one of my absolute favourite games of all-time, and for my money, the best Mega Man game ever created - Mega Man X. I think this game is a stone's throw from being perfect. It looks great, plays well, and the soundtrack is one of the best in all of retro gaming. I suppose you could argue it's a littttttle easy (for a Mega Man game), and there's a particular jump that just chaps my ass, but other than that, I have a really hard criticizing X's debut title. It's just a damned good video game. The one and only Bradley McCue gave me a call this week, and we went through what makes X so rad, and even got into a little strategy talk (which is a rare thing here on RTG, as I normally suck at the games we're talking about). I could talk about this game every week. I hope y'all enjoy it! And before we talk X, I toss together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talk about the modern games that'll be considered "classics" someday. What's the optimal number of party members for an RPG? And what do you do to combat gamer burnout? Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Mega Man games: Mega Man X: Command Mission, Mega Man Legends, and Mega Man: Battle Network. Blog Link: http://videogamegrooves.com/2022/05/21/episode-95-mega-man-legends-across-the-worlds-chrono-cross-wayo-piano-collection Spring has sprung, and like may flowers so have we! This episode is a tiny salute to game series that took a hard left turn but wound up right where they were always meant to be. Our exemplars this week begin with the cult favorite Mega Man Legends from Ship to Shore Media. We look back at this trailblazer of 3D storytelling from before the likes of Metal Gear Solid, and we appreciate its "Saturday morning anime" vibe. The music, too, is a fun little grab-bag of music from disco to classical to synthy cartoon rock or swing, and it's all pretty ahead of its time. We also dive into our first piano arrangement album with Across the Worlds: Chrono Cross Wayô Piano Collection, which is a multi-artist adaptation of a game that still divides fans of the "Chrono series" today. We appreciate the emotional range of the piano, and the daring of a piano arrangement album in general to augment or approach a favorite score with nothing but the instrument and someone to play it. We also examine the time and place of Chrono Cross, and whether or not it is actually a sequel to the universally-acclaimed Chrono Trigger. We continue our discussion with some reflections on game series that changed creative direction, and how the story, aesthetic, and music either benefited or suffered. And finally, we look at all the new releases that have come out in the past few weeks, along with some non-release news that might save you a few bucks on your next vinyl order!
