Season 6, Episode 727:  The episode starts off with Ruan narrating excerpts from Alexandria Swanson's Dark Romance books, Defiance (affiliate link book link ) and Balance (affiliate link book link, then we chat about writing, crazy sex related stories Alexandria has dealt with in her job, and the lovely parts of publishing as an indie author, but dealing with the crap in a world full of censorship. Ruan's book mentioned, Beach House Views: https://books.ruanwillowauthor.com/beachhouseviewsbook Dark Romance Fantasy Author Alexandria Swanson bio:  https://linktr.ee/alexandriaswansonauthor Alexandria has been writing short stories and poems her entire life in journals and had a great idea for a novel. Defiance was the first book she finished, with more to come! Alexandria has her B.A.s in criminology, sociology, and criminal justice with a minor in forensic science. She works as a 911 dispatcher and lives in the Minnesota metro area with her dog and cat, who keep her busy. In her free time, she enjoys rock climbing, hiking, travel and of course, writing. Alexandria is passionate about herbalism and is really bad at surfing, but she considers herself a masochist.  Episode Summary: Author Alexandria Swanson shared she draws inspiration from real experiences when writing (though her writing is fantasy, not memoir), including working as a 911 dispatcher, plus with her background in her studies impacting her characters, her supernatural tales feature werewolves, witches, and vampires who have real psychological disorders, and this plays out as fully fleshed out and named in the storyline. We also discussed the crazy stuff...like the bizarre emergency calls Alexandria has handled: sex toys left in ovens, swallowed handcuff keys, and patients making dangerous decisions with household appliances. These real-life incidents are both interesting and intriguing, and a bit comical and shocking! Alexandria's books *Defiance* and *Balance* explore something rarely addressed in fantasy: how centuries-old supernatural beings experience PTSD and mental health challenges. Her pack therapist character Naya treats werewolves dealing with multi-lifetime trauma, while her protagonist Chloe struggles with night terrors based on Alexandria's own experiences. Listen to hear about the cover designer who hand-draws everything, why Alexandria loves editing (yes, really), and the book fair she will attend that podcast host Ruan Willow is hosting in Minnesota, The Honey and Jalapeno Book Fair, My 17, 2026. In this episode, Brett breaks down many of the themes that rarely get addressed in modern leadership conversations. He talks about power dynamics, internal and external conflict, and what it actually looks like to lead when the situation isn't clean or clear. That includes navigating manipulative behavior, managing seemingly no-win situations, and making decisions that can carry real personal and professional ramifications. The situations faced can tempt you to soften your standards or drift into people-pleasing just to keep external stakeholders satisfied. Brett explores how to avoid that trap, how to read the room more accurately, and how to assess what's really going on beneath the surface — not just in others, but in yourself. He also shares an update on his upcoming book with Penguin Random House, which releases December 1, and explains why he chose to focus on the morally gray, psychologically demanding side of influence and leadership. Preorders are live at artofcoaching.com/book.   What You'll Learn:   ∙ The morally gray decisions that challenge your assumptions and beliefs   ∙ How internal conflict can be more destabilizing than external opposition   ∙ The subtle ways leaders drift into people-pleasing to satisfy stakeholders   ∙ Navigating manipulative behavior and seemingly no-win environments   ____________________     Follow Us: Website: ArtofCoaching.com Instagram: @coach_brettb X: @coach_brettb

It can be a tender thing to launch a creative project into the world. That's true whether you're an actor, a baker, a musician, a quilter, or almost any other artisan. As a writer, releasing a book often feels like that scene in early Gray's Anatomy where Meredith stands before Derek and says, “Pick me, choose me, love me.”In short, it's a little bit vulnerable. When I launched my first book back in 2019, Daryl took me to see Sweeney Todd at our local theater, to distract me from all of the big feelings. (A murdering, singing barber will do that!) These days, I've learned to notice and honor the feelings as they come and pass. There are a lot of them, in the week leading up to a book launch. And these feelings aren't just about whether people will like the book. That's part of it, for sure—no author wants to be panned or ignored. But they go beyond just wanting the book to hit well. They run the full gamut from excitement to terror. To paraphrase my writer-friend Ruth, the only thing scarier than no one is reading your book is people actually, you know, reading your book. But here's the thing: being part of the literary world is one of the great joys of my life. And that joy is a wonderful balm for all of the BIG FEELINGS™ that show up on launch week.I love my writing communities. That's you, beloved SubStack friends. It's the writers who read early drafts of my work (thank you, Steve! thank you, Aarik!) and gave me honest feedback. It's the writers whose books I love who have helped me grow in the craft. It's fellow writers in the trenches being honest about what it takes to turn a beautiful phrase and keep pursuing what is beautiful and true in a world filled with AI slop and lazy shortcuts. It's writers who are also bookstore owners (I love you, Nooks!) who foster community spaces where people can be together, heartened, seen, and read. Each time I publish a book and begin to feel all the feelings (hooray! oh no! how are my numbers doing? what have I forgotten?), I remember that you and each fellow reader and writer out there are the biggest gifts of all.I'd be honored if you'd give Weathering Change a look. Preorders matter, and this is the last week you can sneak one of those in, at Amazon or Nooks or anywhere you love buying your books. (You can also request it at your local library, which is free to you!)But above all, please know that I am so grateful that you're with me on this journey of words, seeking to make meaning out of life.Today's podcast is short and sweet—just 25 minutes. In it I read chapter one from Weathering Change. Many thanks to my publisher, InterVarsity Press, for giving me permission to share it with you today. If you'd prefer to read it rather than listen to it, you can find it here.Thank you for your love and support. I am so excited to share this book with you! A Note from Michael: The Thriving Farmer Podcast is currently on pause as we navigate a busy season on the farm. While we're taking this break, we're excited to share Farm in Focus, a special series of short, focused conversations recorded earlier this year. These bite-sized episodes highlight practical insights from farmers and experts across the industry. We hope they're helpful and encouraging as you continue your farming journey.   What does it take to plan, grow, and manage more than 600 crop varieties each year? In this Farm in Focus episode, Michael sits down again with Katie Baldwin and Amanda Merrow of Amber Waves Farm—this time diving into the art and complexity of crop planning on a diversified, vertically integrated teaching farm. From balancing customer demand with realistic yields, to building soil health with integrated grain production, to coordinating a team during harvest, Katie and Amanda offer a candid look at what it really takes to manage large-scale crop diversity. Whether you're planning your first season or refining long-term systems, their insights will help you think more strategically about plant diversity, soil management, documentation, and how to build a resilient crop plan that works. In this episode, you'll hear about: Crop Diversity & Customer Preferences: • Why Amber Waves grows over 600 varieties—and what customers actually want [2:48] The Complexity of Crop Planning: • How succession planting, land limitations, and crop mix make planning so challenging [6:12] Building Soil Health: • Integrating grain production with vegetables to support soil structure and fertility [10:15] • Innovative disease management strategies, including soil steaming [12:28] Harvesting & Team Coordination: • The communication systems that keep harvest running smoothly [17:35] Advice for New Farmers: • Why writing everything down is one of their most important tools [21:02] • How biodiversity strengthens customer engagement and long-term sustainability Bio:Amber Waves began in 2008 when Amanda Merrow and Katie Baldwin met during a farm apprenticeship, sparking a friendship and a shared dream to feed their local community. A year later, they launched their farm on seven conserved acres behind the Amagansett Farmers Market, drawn to the land's unique coastal terroir, which inspired the name Amber Waves. In the early days, they personally connected with every visitor, cultivating a community that found comfort, inspiration, and empowerment through the farm. By 2016, with the support of dedicated locals and visionary women before them, Amanda and Katie secured ownership of the farmland and reunited it with the historic farmstand. Today, Amber Waves spans over 30 acres, operates a vibrant market and kitchen, and stands as a nationally recognized educational farm serving hundreds of families and visitors each year. Links:

A Note from Michael: The Thriving Farmer Podcast is currently on pause as we navigate a busy season on the farm. While we're taking this break, we're excited to share Farm in Focus, a special series of short, focused conversations recorded earlier this year. These bite-sized episodes highlight practical insights from farmers and experts across the industry. We hope they're helpful and encouraging as you continue your farming journey.  Can one grass-fed cow truly become the heart of a food-independent farm? In this Farm in Focus episode, Michael sits down with Shawn and Beth Dougherty, authors of One Cow Revolution, to talk about how a single dairy cow can transform a farm's productivity, resilience, and relationship with the land. Drawing from decades of experience, the Doughertys explain why grass—not grain—is the foundation of sustainable dairy systems, how ruminants build soil fertility while producing food, and what new cow owners need to understand before bringing a milk cow home. This conversation blends philosophy with deeply practical advice, offering a grounded look at low-input, grass-based farming. Whether you're dreaming of a family milk cow or simply curious about food independence, this episode offers timeless insights rooted in observation, experience, and respect for animals and land.   In this episode, you'll hear about: The One Cow Revolution Why Shawn and Beth felt compelled to write One Cow Revolution [01:40] How cows fit into a sustainable, food-independent farm system [01:40] Grass, Ruminants & Soil Health Why grass is the most important resource on the farm [03:34] How ruminants improve soil fertility while producing food [03:34] Advice for New Cow Owners Why starting small is critical for success [07:50] How temporary electric fencing makes land integration easier [07:50] Why observation matters more than rigid systems [07:50] The Abundance of a Dairy Cow Just how much food one cow can provide [13:34] Using milk to feed other animals and increase farm productivity [13:34] Common Mistakes & Lessons Learned Where new cow owners often underestimate feed needs [16:14] Why practical experience matters more than theory [16:14] Why milking is simpler than many people expect [16:14]  About the Guests: Shawn and Beth Dougherty have been homesteading together since 1985, for the past 35 years in northern Appalachia. They raise dairy and beef cows, pigs, and poultry on a small acreage designated by the state of Ohio as "not suitable for agriculture." The Doughertys write, teach, and speak on holistic grazing and inputs-free farming, using grass-fed ruminants to restore abused land and build fertile, resilient farmsteads. They are the authors of One Cow Revolution, The Independent Farmstead, and The Independent Farmstead's Field Guides to Inputs-Free Farming series. Links:

Drawing from her experience raising grassfed beef, pasture-raised chicken, and forest-raised pork, Danielle walks through the real considerations behind moving from selling meat shares to offering retail cuts—and what that shift meant for customer relationships, cash flow, and long-term planning. The episode explores the realities of small-scale, regenerative meat sales, including product availability, butcher scheduling, pricing confidence, and market logistics. Rather than offering theory, Danielle provides clear, experience-driven insights that can help producers decide if farmers' markets fit their operation—and how to do them better if they do.
