EVERY DETAIL ABOUT THE PANDEMIC NOW IN QUESTION:  7/8  A Shot to Save the World: The Inside Story of the Life-or-Death Race for a COVID-19 Vaccine, by  Gregory Zuckerman   Kindle Edition https://www.amazon.com/Shot-Save-World-Life-Death/dp/059342039X/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Few were ready when a mysterious respiratory illness emerged in Wuhan, China in January 2020. Politicians, government officials, business leaders, and public-health professionals were unprepared for the most devastating pandemic in a century. Many of the world's biggest drug and vaccine makers were slow to react or couldn't muster an effective response. It was up to a small group of unlikely and untested scientists and executives to save civilization. A French businessman dismissed by many as a fabulist. A Turkish immigrant with little virus experience. A quirky Midwesterner obsessed with insect cells. A Boston scientist employing questionable techniques. A British scientist despised by his peers. Far from the limelight, each had spent years developing innovative vaccine approaches. Their work was met with skepticism and scorn. By 2020, these individuals had little proof of progress. Yet they and their colleagues wanted to be the ones to stop the virus holding the world hostage. They scrambled to turn their life's work into life-saving vaccines in a matter of months, each gunning to make the big breakthrough—and to beat each other for the glory that a vaccine guaranteed.

Software is eating the world, right? We've all heard this phrase by now, but inventor and investor Pablos Holman has something important to add: “The world can't eat software.”That's why Pablos focuses on “deep tech”, i.e. how to invent new solutions to real world problems like energy, water, waste, construction, and sanitation. Pablos says we're still mostly using version 1.0 technology for these fundamental systems, but recent advances, including AI and the ability to prototype and test in software, are enabling incredible innovation in hardware.Pablos has worked with Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and more. He's kind of a mad scientist and in this episode we'll discuss things that sound like science fiction, but that Pablos says are coming soon, such as solar panels in outer space that can beam clean energy down to earth, autonomous cargo ships blown by the wind across the ocean, and tiny nuclear reactors buried a mile underground that power the world above. At Deep Future, Pablos is on a mission to solve the world's biggest problems, and he's hoping more people will make the jump that he did from software to hardware and into deep tech, because, as he says, “ all the people who've been building software their entire career, those are the ones who are going to save the world.”—Chapters02:25 Deep tech and why it's so important05:56 How Pablos became an inventor07:44 Getting Blue Origin off the ground11:35 Running an invention lab at Intellectual Ventures13:40 Why solar panels in space will soon power Earth16:46 Why all problems are energy problems21:33 Better nuclear reactors are coming28:25 How rapid iteration in software enables better hardware31:35 An appeal to software people to get into deep tech — and save the world—Links:Deep Future book, podcast, and firm: deepfuture.techPopTech conference: poptech.org (if you're new to PopTech and would like a discount, email me or DM me on LinkedIn)Sign up for the CRAFTED. newsletter: crafted.fmLearn more about how Modern Product Minds can help you build the future: modernproductminds.comEmail me: dan@modernproductminds.com

W/C 14th July 2025What seems to be happening at the moment is that I am missing one of my walking days, pretty much without fail, every week. The running is going fine, I am up to about 35 miles per week, and last week I ran my second half marathon distance. I am just about to set off for an eight miler, and I will probably do eleven or so tomorrow. Thinking about it, it might be because I get up and run first thing, as opposed to trying to crowbar a walk into the later part of the day. Anyway, whatever the reason, it just seems to be (literally) a step too far for my schedule at the moment.Stay safe.Save The World - Jason Isbell and the 400 UnitThe Brett Domino Trio - Dead Whale SongTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. In the premiere episode of DEFCON ZERQ, Alpha Warrior and Josh Reid launch an unfiltered series breaking down the origins, evolution, and real-world impact of what they call a decades-long military intelligence operation. They trace its roots to a coordinated effort by constitutional-minded generals tracking the theft of advanced defense technologies and infiltration by foreign adversaries. The hosts recount pivotal events: nuclear triggers sent overseas, mysterious air mishaps, the Snowden leaks, and the creation of special teams to investigate corruption. They explain how the rise of social media and viral content transformed public awareness, enabling decentralized citizen journalism to bypass mainstream narratives and fuel a global awakening. From Hillary Clinton's classified emails and uranium deals to election interference and Trump's unexpected rise as a countermeasure, the episode weaves together a sweeping story of covert maneuvers and information warfare. Alpha and Josh stress this is not entertainment but a strategic effort built on breadcrumbs, plausible deniability, and public engagement. This foundational discussion sets the stage for a multi-part series exploring symbolism, narrative control, and how movement warfare is shaping the fight for America's future.

With the global rise of the far-right, women's rights are increasingly under threat. French author Lauren Bastide remains hopeful: feminism can save the world, but only as a revolutionary project that seeks to improve society at all levels, for everyone.Together with migrants and people from the LGBTQ+-community, women are among the first to suffer when a society takes an autocratic turn. Abortion rights in the United States are being undermined; in Hungary, women are encouraged through tax incentives to have more children – policy measures expressing the autocratic conviction that a woman's primary roles are those of mother and wife. How can feminism oppose these tendencies? And what should feminism look like? French author and journalist Lauren Bastide argues that feminism should not be about corporate slogans and individual success stories, but rather be grounded in global solidarity. In this programme, we'll explore how feminist values can build new alliances across borders. What solutions does feminism rooted in solidarity and intersectionality provide?Programme maker: Larissa BiemondThis programme is a part of the Forum on European Culture 2025.Zie het privacybeleid op https://art19.com/privacy en de privacyverklaring van Californië op https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In his new book, What's Left: Three Paths Through the Planetary Crisis, writer Malcom Harris examines what is probably our most pressing existential paradox: Both individually and as a society, we're all so caught up in the struggle to survive under capitalism that we've become incapable of taking decisive action to reduce our reliance on carbon and ensure our collective survival. Fortunately, as Malcom sees it, our fate isn't sealed just yet. And What's Left lays out, clearly and accessibly, what he sees as the three remaining options for saving the world.Malcolm joins us to talk about those strategies — which he calls marketcraft, public power, and communism — and why solving the climate crisis requires people from across the left pursuing all three of them in tandem. We also get into why more mainstream political philosophies — like the notion of “Abundance,” popularized by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson and championed by centrist Democrats like Cory Booker — won't help, largely because of a failure to engage with class politics. Finally, we zoom out to contemplate what political opposition even looks like in our increasingly inhospitable environment for free speech. Will the left will remain fragmented between Boomers shouting “Hands off NATO” at public protests while college students get arrested for peacefully protesting the atrocities in Gaza? In the early 80s, as fear of Nuclear War ramped up, ABC planned to air a Sunday night movie that dealt with what nuclear war would really look like. In November 1983, this kicked off a firestorm of attention--both good and bad--that resulted in one of the biggest viewing audiences in TV history. This is a look back on the movie that not only terrified the public, but became a watershed moment in the history of the Cold War... Check out new episodes early and ad-free: Patreon.com/80s

My guest this week is author of "The Athos Diet" and director of the emergency department at UPMC, Dr. Peter Patitsas. Informed by his Greek Orthodox heritage, he has discovered a method to stay healthy with high energy to meet the daily grind. Dr. Pete visited Greece many times as a youth and lived there after graduating college. He was forever impacted by his journey to Mt. Athos and has spent countless weeks living at monasteries across the globe: a place where time stops and meaning is the highest good. It is no coincidence that within a place of the True, the Good, and the Beautiful, there would be found something that can bring a salve to suffering. We discuss the spiritual and physical benefits that the diet governed by the liturgical calendar of the Orthodox Church can give to us.
