The Dolly Parton Disney Movie That Almost Was (Ep. 114)

Jim Hill and Lauren Hersey remember Dolly Parton by exploring her long and surprisingly deep connection to Disney. Jim recounts the ambitious Feature Animation Florida project that nearly gave Dolly a starring role in a hand-drawn/CG hybrid set in Appalachia, variously known as My Peoples, Angel and Her No Good Sister, and A Few Good Ghosts. They also look back at Dolly's appearances with Disney, her relationship with Miley Cyrus, the growth of Dollywood and the Imagination Library, and Jim's own conversation with the country music legend. HIGHLIGHTS • How Dolly Parton became Miley Cyrus's Aunt Dolly on Hannah Montana. • Dolly's Disney connection stretching back to Walt Disney World's 15th anniversary celebration. • The story behind Barry Cook's abandoned Feature Animation Florida project My Peoples. • Why Disney paired traditional human animation with CG Appalachian folk-art characters. • The all-star voice cast that included Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, Ashley Judd, Travis Tritt, Hal Holbrook, and more. • How the project evolved through titles including Elgin's Peoples, Once in a Blue Moon, Angel and Her No Good Sister, and A Few Good Ghosts. • Michael Eisner's enthusiastic reaction shortly before Disney ultimately shut the project down. • How changing attitudes toward hand-drawn animation and Disney's strained relationship with Pixar helped bring the film - and Feature Animation Florida - to an end. • Jim remembers interviewing Dolly about the Imagination Library and asking her about the Disney movie that never made it to theaters. Midweek Mention... An American Werewolf in London

This week on Bad Dads Film Review, it is Wolf Week, which means we are heading to the moors, the Tube, the London Zoo wolf enclosure and one of cinema's all-time great transformation scenes for An American Werewolf in London.Sidey and Dan are joined by guest dad Jamie for John Landis's 1981 horror-comedy about two American backpackers, one very unwelcoming pub, and the worst possible way to discover that “stay on the road” was not just local colour.Sidey had somehow never watched the whole film before, despite having seen the famous transformation sequence many times. Jamie definitely saw it before, but at an age where he absolutely should not have. Dan brings the cult-classic affection, and the result is a review full of practical effects appreciation, Yorkshire pub suspicion, Jenny Agutter, decomposing best mates and moon-based needle drops.Along the way we discuss:Jamie's debut as a Bad Dad and the need for subtitles/phone voiceThe Slaughtered Lamb and Britain's least welcoming pintRick Mayall, Brian Glover, Frank Oz and other “what was he in?” faceswhy the film does not bother over-explaining the village, the cover-up or the logistics of getting David to LondonJack returning as an increasingly decomposed undead adviserthe nightmare sequences, including the Nazi werewolf home invasionJenny Agutter as Nurse Alex Price and the film's spectacularly fast romanceDavid being oddly honest about his visions, nightmares and wolf problemRick Baker's Oscar-winning makeup and the transformation scene that still holds upwhy practical effects age so much better than dodgy CGIDavid waking naked in London Zoo and trying to buy a small boy's balloonsthe doomed attempt to get arrested by abusing the police and the monarchythe porno-theatre support group of victims suggesting suicide methodsPiccadilly chaos, armed police, decapitation and catastrophic traffic managementthe moon-heavy soundtrack, from Blue Moon to Bad Moon Risingwhether the film is horror, comedy, romance, body horror, or all of them at onceThe dads come away with a very strong recommend. It is brisk, funny, gruesome, strangely sweet, brilliantly made and still properly entertaining. The werewolf may occasionally look like it is on a dolly, but the transformation remains magic, the comedy still lands, and the whole thing has exactly the right amount of nonsense. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. About the Book: Until Midnight is the thrilling new novel from the Amazon Charts and New York Times bestselling author Luanne Rice (Last Night, The Shadow Box and Last Day). The Reid Brothers are back… Rhode Island's picturesque Ocean House is the perfect setting for Kate Woodward and Conor Reid's fairy-tale wedding weekend. But there may not be a happily ever after. When an old friend of Conor's disrupts the rehearsal dinner and reveals a blindsiding secret—a claim that she and Conor share a child—Kate calls off the wedding, thinking things can't get any worse. Until the next morning, when that same woman is found with her throat slashed. As investigators close in and suspicions mount, the evidence points to a mystery deeper than anyone imagined. The soundproof boat with telltale signs of something sinister. The mansion on the hill that lures in young girls and doesn't let them go. A secret society whose members might be more familiar than not. And the truth of the dead woman's past that draws Kate and Conor into a nightmare.   For more information about Luanne Rice, visit luannerice.com, and for more on Deborah Goodrich Royce and her new release, Best Boy, along with information about the Ocean House Author Series, visit deborahgoodrichroyce.com

Over the course of his career, no other director has documented the passage of time better on screen than writer-director Richard Linklater. The Texas filmmaker, synonymous with being one of the vital voices of the independent film movement of the 1990s, has used his filmography to record the most vital parts of our lives, and how those moments from our past and present can shape our future. Whether it's our first love and the long romantic journey with that person (the Before Trilogy), the magic of his childhood (School of Rock, Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood), the glory of high school and college (Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some!!), the evolution of artistic expression (Me and Orson Welles, Blue Moon, Nouvelle Vague), Linklater has looked inward at the human condition expertly for close to forty years, but none more so perfectly than he did with his 2014 masterpiece, Boyhood. Originating as an idea in his mind over two and a half decades ago, Linklater assembled a cast and crew to go on a twelve-year journey of filming that would chronicle the life of a young boy from the age of six all the way to eighteen, from kindergarten to the end of high school. From the early 2000s to the mid-2010s, Linklater tinkered in the editing room with footage from limited days to shooting with his actors, sometimes even without a finish script, and sprung out a one-of-a-kind film that serves as a memory box for generation within its specific look at a boy growing up in South Texas as he's discovering who he wants to be, living with his mother and sister and occasionally spending time with his father when he is in town. In symbolic nod to the years, it took to make Boyhood, it returns to theaters for a run of anniversary screenings nationwide for its twelve-year celebration to re-explore the evolving yet universal themes Linklater concluded about adolescence, parenthood, siblings, and learning that the road to becoming the person we want to be takes exactly one thing Linklater has become known for, time. In a recent conversation, Linklater and I spoke about the origins of the project, collecting the music that made up the character's world, the evolving nature of the project, and retooling the film's narrative to fit the film's star Ellar Coltrane's life and interests. We also spoke about working with Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, their growth within these characters as parents and how Arquette's role mirrored the life of Linklater's mother. Our discussion continued with what it was like to film eight other films while creating Boyhood, why San Marcos, TX was a great location to shoot the majority of the film (he continued to use this location for Everybody Wants Some!!), his optimism about the future generations on the whole as well as within the confines of artistic expression. In our final moments, Linklater teased his latest expansive project he's doing right now, an adaptation of the musical Merrily We Roll Along, this time with the film commencing over the course of twenty years to complete the time period of this celebrated work from Stephen Sondheim. While it seems like a daunting task, only Linklater would have the trust from audiences to deliver again once we are able to see the film in the years to come. But until then, the director, much like when he was making Boyhood, will continue to create great work that reminds us of his artistic super power; that by looking inward, we discover the value of our place, our time, and the skin we live in. Boyhood will receive a 12th anniversary theatrical re-release from Independent Film Company (IFC) on July 31.

Listen to separate the three layers of an arc -- does the character change? How do they feel about it? And how is the audience positioned to feel about it? Stu, Chas and Mel finally begin their long-awaited journey into CHARACTER ARCS. In this "primer" episode, we try find some learnings and analytical lenses that we can then apply in future breakdowns. In this episode, we explore differences between a character learning something and a character fundamentally changing, how to dramatise that, and how the show teaches the audience to perceive that transformation (whether positively or negatively). Throughout the discussion, we skate over A NEW HOPE, BLUE MOON, BREAKING BAD, BETTER CALL SAUL, the French real-time thriller FULL TIME, A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS, THE GREEN KNIGHT, ALL OF US STRANGERS, PREDATOR BADLANDS, FIELD OF DREAMS, MEG 2, and Stu's receding hairline. Ultimately, this discussion synthesises into a series of questions to ask of a story and the main point-of-view character living through that story: Does the audience enter the story with an expectation that characters will change? How does the story teach the audience to expect characters to change or not? Do the characters change? Is it experiential change or internal value change? How is that dramatised? Is the character aware that they changed? How do they feel about that change? Does that matter? How does the story want the audience to feel about that change? If different to the character's perception, how does the story pull that off? How does the story world punish or reward the change? What are the values explored by the arc? How does this relate to the theme? How is contrast vs affinity/unity portrayed through the characters' journey? Order vs disorder vs inertia What is the emotional event created between the character and audience as a result of the journey? Does the character end up more intimate or distant from the audience? In upcoming episodes, we intend to apply these lenses to stories with STEADFAST/RESILIENT arcs, POSITIVE arcs, NEGATIVE arcs and - potentially - a “WTF is this?!” arc. Mōcean (stylized as mōcean drinkwerx) is a disruptive, better-for-you functional beverage brand pioneering the adult clean energy drink market. Co-founded by a multi-generational father-son duo—veteran master brewmaster Tony Vieira and creative brand strategist Christian Vieira—Mōcean was engineered to challenge the high-stimulant, youth-centric marketing of conventional energy drinks. By introducing a taurine-free, immune-support formulation rooted in premium Eastern botanicals, the brand directly targets health-conscious professionals, parents, and athletes seeking sustained cognitive performance without the subsequent sugar crash or jittery fallout. The inspiration for Mōcean emerged out of a universal pain point in consumer packaged goods (CPG): the distinct lack of health-conscious energy products for mature demographics. Standing in a hospital gift shop during the late-night birth of his daughter, Christian Vieira recognized that the energy drink aisle was a neon landscape of excessive stimulants and artificial ingredients completely unaligned with adult lifestyle needs. To bridge this market gap, Christian partnered with his father, Tony Vieira. Bringing over 36 years of commercial brewing science experience from executive development roles at Anheuser-Busch, Coors, and Mark Anthony Brewing—where he spearheaded the scaling of Blue Moon and the technical quality infrastructure behind White Claw's market dominance—Tony applied precise formulation standards to revolutionize the clean energy space. While 99% of conventional energy drinks rely on standard chemical copy-pasting, Mōcean is engineered to meet the strict compliance and ingredient standards of premium natural grocers like Whole Foods Market and Sprouts. Mōcean distinguishes itself as the first functional energy drink in the United States to utilize shiso (Perilla frutescens), an ancient Eastern botanical highly regarded in Asian wellness traditions for its powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulating properties. This herbal foundation aligns with modern consumer shifts toward holistic wellness and daily preventative health. Rather than overloading the central nervous system with empty stimulants, Mōcean operates as a hybrid wellness supplement. The ingredient deck features a strategic matrix of functional adaptogens, vitamins, and minerals, including therapeutic doses of Elderberry extract, Echinacea, Zinc, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B12. It also incorporates Magnesium Citrate combined with natural Ocean Salt to mitigate physical fatigue and support neural hydration. In a major departure from industry standards, Mōcean contains zero taurine, proactively addressing emerging consumer awareness and scientific studies scrutinizing the long-term metabolic impacts of stimulant stacking. For clean energy, the beverage delivers a calibrated 130 mg of organic green tea caffeine per serving. This moderate dosing provides jitter-free cognitive focus, allowing high-performing adults to safely consume the product within recommended daily health boundaries. Mōcean explicitly rejects artificial, candy-flavored profiles like cotton candy or birthday cake, opting instead for crisp, subtly carbonated, and naturally sweetened options. The core flavor architecture includes Mandarin, a bright, nostalgic citrus profile; White Peach, a sophisticated and smooth floral flavor tailored for mature palates; Blueberry Pom, a rich, tart fusion of dark berries designed for a refreshing midday mental reset; and Strawberry Guava, a crisp, tropical profile that delivers authentic fruit notes without excessive sweetness. Representing the evolution of the functional beverage market, Mōcean successfully captures market share at the intersection of natural energy, daily immunity supplements, and clean-label transparency, anchoring its brand value under the core tagline: a body in mōcean stays in motion. As I look back on my childhood and my very first music studies, I realize that I was incredibly fortunate, blessed, actually. Not because I was gifted or because my parents were not only willing but were able to support my harp lessons. Not because I was in one of the music capitals of the world and had access to world class teachers. Not because I had so many opportunities and people that encouraged me along my journey. Well, yes, I was blessed because of all those things, certainly. But I want to talk today about a different gift that was given to me, one I didn't realize the value of until much later. The gift was this: I was always encouraged to play music outside the box. Let me explain. I started piano lessons when I was four years old, and my piano teacher was not only a fabulous musician, but a creative and generous teacher. My lessons included all the usual piano exercises - which I hated - and sonatinas - which I loved - and she also made sure that she gave me performance-worthy arrangements of popular music. I played arrangements of "Blue Moon" and "People" from Funny Girl and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that were written by pianists like Roger Williams. These were fancy arrangements that took quite a bit of technique and a lot of practice to play well, and I enjoyed them.  But my teacher never stuck exactly to the printed page. She always had some alterations to add a little more pizzazz to the arrangement. We were always taking bass notes down an octave or playing another part up in the high register like a music box, or changing dynamics and tempo. What she taught me was that music was self-expression. It was about so much more than just playing the written notes. It was about making the notes say what you thought they should say. Please understand; we didn't take liberties with the classics. She made sure I played absolutely every note that Bach wrote on the page. But I learned very early on how to be creative in my music-making, and that has been a tremendous gift. I've never shied away from arranging, and in fact, it's one of my favorite things to do. I'd love every harpist to learn the freedom of making their music their own, and that's what this show is about. I actually went back about two years into the podcast archives to pull out this episode which speaks directly to this. If you've ever wondered about what it takes to make an arrangement, or how to go about it, this is the episode for you. And afterwards, I want to tell you about an opportunity - a new challenge, in fact -  to work with me on your own arrangement.  Links to things I think you might be interested in that were mentioned in the podcast episode:  Get creative with the Compose for Christmas Challenge  Go even further at the Chrysalis Music Workshop  Harpmastery.com Get involved in the show! David Susko, a Martian geologist working for a NASA contractor is our guest. He builds and operates cameras for space missions, including a visible-light camera called MACIE (Mars Color Imager) that photographs the Martian surface at various scales and resolutions.   Key points discussed: Moon before Mars. The Moon is a mandatory stepping stone — everything from Apollo to the ISS has been about learning to live and work in space before attempting Mars. Going straight to Mars carries too much risk. Historical context. Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo were proof-of-concept missions. The Saturn V rocket remains the gold standard. Retiring it in the 70s (and the engineers and facilities with it) was a costly decision NASA has been recovering from ever since. The rocket equation problem. The vast majority of fuel is spent just escaping Earth's gravity well. Every extra kilogram of payload requires exponentially more fuel, making heavy-lift missions extremely difficult. Today's rockets. Three heavy-lift vehicles are currently in play: NASA's SLS, SpaceX's Starship, and Blue Origin's New Glenn. All three are involved in Artemis. Artemis mission architecture. The plan involves multiple launches, orbital rendezvous and docking between the Orion capsule and the Starship lunar lander (or Blue Moon variant), new spacesuits from a private aerospace company, and astronauts landing near the lunar south pole. Artemis milestones so far. Artemis I (2022, uncrewed) flew around the Moon and successfully re-entered Earth's atmosphere. Artemis II will fly crew around the Moon. Artemis III will attempt the first crewed landing in decades. A first Moon landing in roughly 2–3 years is the current plan, though delays are likely. Target: lunar south pole / Shackleton Crater. The south pole is almost permanently shadowed and likely harbors water ice — a critical resource for long-term habitation. The VIPER rover (using ground-penetrating radar) is being sent to prospect for these resources. Long-term goal. Build permanent lunar infrastructure to support human habitation — a "Moon base" — as the launchpad for eventual Mars missions. Safety. The guest emphasizes not rushing; the Apollo program's near-perfect safety record shouldn't breed complacency, especially given tragedies like the Space Shuttle Columbia.

The Moon can be like a painter’s canvas, dabbed with many colors: the silver of a frosty night, the gold of honey, the orange of a ripe cantaloupe, even the deep red of blood. But it’s almost never blue – at least not in appearance. It sometimes is blue in name, though – including tonight. That’s because it’s the second full Moon of May – a repeat appearance known as a Blue Moon. The color of the Moon – full or not – depends on several factors. When the Moon is low in the sky, as it rises or sets, its light passes through a thicker layer of air. Molecules in the atmosphere scatter blue wavelengths of light, allowing the red to shine through. As the Moon climbs higher, we see more of its true color – gray. But the Moon is so bright that it looks white or silver. During a lunar eclipse, the Moon passes through Earth’s dark shadow. But sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere makes the Moon look dark orange or red. In rare cases, the Moon can actually look blue. That happens after volcanic eruptions or big forest fires. These events pump out particles that scatter red light, allowing the blue to shine through. After the eruption of Krakatoa, in 1883, the Moon appeared blue for months around the entire globe. Whatever its color, enjoy tonight’s Blue Moon. And look quite close to it throughout the night for the star Antares, the heart of the scorpion. They’ll be closest as they set. Send us Fan MailNate's on the road this week and Brian and I start off praising the glory of a good night's sleep. It's quite elusive these days, so we appreciate it even more. It can really work wonders. We also discovered Haas Euphorics and chat about those. Botanical extract meant to be added to finished beer. They've got blends to add a rounded tropical profile or just a single fruit note if that's your thing. We're not sure what brewers are using these, we'll have to do some digging. We just can't seem to get rid of James Watt. After the sale of BrewDog he's planning to open a new brewery called "Second Best." Is anyone excited for this? Sounds like he plans to give shares to the people that got the shaft in the Equity for Punks program. We'll begrudgingly follow this news to see where it goes.On a more positive note it sounds like there's been some activity at the Anchor Brewery. Not much to report now outside of speculation but local reported seeing contractors there for things like refrigeration work. We'll follow this news with much more interest. In other news scientists unearthed a 2,300 year old bottle of beer in pretty good shape for its age, Voodoo Brewing faces trouble but franchises should stay open, proof that Nubians drank antibiotic beer, and your Blue Moon is gonna get even more blue, temporarily. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio!  Your hosts are Tim Dennis and Brian Hewitt with producer Nate "Mo' Mic Nate" Ellingson and occasional appearances from Becky Smalls.Subscribe to Beer Guys Radio on your favorite app: Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher  | RSSFollow Beer Guys Radio: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube If you enjoy the show we'd appreciate your support on Patreon.  Patrons get cool perks like early, commercial-free episodes, swag, access to our exclusive Discord server, and more!

What a wild week in space news! We were all set to discuss Starship Test Flight 12 and NASA's recent press conference updating their lunar base plans, when on Thursday night, Blue Origin lost a New Glenn rocket on the pad during a static test. The explosion appears to have severely damaged the launch structure, LC36, along with the loss of the rocket. Fortunately, there were no casualties. But this does throw NASA's schedule for returning American astronauts to the moon into question, given that the agency had recently signaled their choice of Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander for Artemis 4 in 2028. It's now a toss-up between the US and China, with the competition hotter--and closer--than ever. And of course, we'll still discuss Starship and the latest lunar base plans! Robert Kaplow is the author of numerous novels. In 2008, director Richard Linklater filmed an adaptation of Robert's novel ME AND ORSON WELLES. In the past, Robert has taught English and Creative Writing, and for over a decade, he and his band (“Moe Moskowitz and the Punsters”) wrote, produced, and performed satirical sketches for NPR's Morning Edition. BLUE MOON is his first original screenplay. BLUE MOON tells the story of Lorenz Hart's struggles with alcoholism and mental health as he tries to save face during the opening of "Oklahoma!". The film stars Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, and Andrew Scott. In this interview, we talk about the film adaptation of his novel ME AND ORSON WELLES, the development of the screenplay for BLUE MOON with Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke, the creative process of writing a plausible voice for Lorenz Hart, plus advice for writers on patience, persistence, and keeping the faith when facing rejection.
