We celebrate July being National Picnic Month, as we turn it into National Poetry at the Picnic Month and have two picnics, one with traditional foods and one a Dollar Tree picnic. It's hard to explain. Just listen. We kept eating, so it's longer than usual.
Today's West Coast Cookbook & Speakeasy Podcast for our especially special Daily Special, Blue Moon Spirits Fridays, is now available on the Spreaker Player!Starting off in the Bistro Cafe, Trump's delusional “broken election system” speech was a bunch of explosive diarrhea. Then, on the rest of the menu, Mississippi teachers say the new state-mandated process for buying classroom supplies has been made more difficult; Trump is taking longer to approve disaster aid and denying Democratic states more frequently; and, in what surely must be ICE job requirements, the ICE officer who murdered an innocent man in Maine, has a history of domestic violence and serious mental health issues since childhood. After the break, we move to the Chef's Table where ICE arrested a human rights lawyer who fled the China crackdown on human rights lawyers, for deportation back to Beijing; and, Japan's parliament ruled only paternal-lineage men can become emperor, sparking concern that the measure could doom the already shrinking imperial family. All that and more, on West Coast Cookbook & Speakeasy with Chef de Cuisine Justice Putnam.Bon Appétit! The Netroots Radio Live PlayerKeep Your Resistance Radio Beaming 24/7/365!“Structural linguistics is a bitterly divided and unhappy profession, and a large number of its practitioners spend many nights drowning their sorrows in Ouisghian Zodahs.” ― Douglas Adams “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/west-coast-cookbook-speakeasy--2802999/support.

Listen to separate the three layers of an arc -- does the character change? How do they feel about it? And how is the audience positioned to feel about it? Stu, Chas and Mel finally begin their long-awaited journey into CHARACTER ARCS. In this "primer" episode, we try find some learnings and analytical lenses that we can then apply in future breakdowns. In this episode, we explore differences between a character learning something and a character fundamentally changing, how to dramatise that, and how the show teaches the audience to perceive that transformation (whether positively or negatively). Throughout the discussion, we skate over A NEW HOPE, BLUE MOON, BREAKING BAD, BETTER CALL SAUL, the French real-time thriller FULL TIME, A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS, THE GREEN KNIGHT, ALL OF US STRANGERS, PREDATOR BADLANDS, FIELD OF DREAMS, MEG 2, and Stu's receding hairline. Ultimately, this discussion synthesises into a series of questions to ask of a story and the main point-of-view character living through that story: Does the audience enter the story with an expectation that characters will change? How does the story teach the audience to expect characters to change or not? Do the characters change? Is it experiential change or internal value change? How is that dramatised? Is the character aware that they changed? How do they feel about that change? Does that matter? How does the story want the audience to feel about that change? If different to the character's perception, how does the story pull that off? How does the story world punish or reward the change? What are the values explored by the arc? How does this relate to the theme? How is contrast vs affinity/unity portrayed through the characters' journey? Order vs disorder vs inertia What is the emotional event created between the character and audience as a result of the journey? Does the character end up more intimate or distant from the audience? In upcoming episodes, we intend to apply these lenses to stories with STEADFAST/RESILIENT arcs, POSITIVE arcs, NEGATIVE arcs and - potentially - a “WTF is this?!” arc. Mōcean (stylized as mōcean drinkwerx) is a disruptive, better-for-you functional beverage brand pioneering the adult clean energy drink market. Co-founded by a multi-generational father-son duo—veteran master brewmaster Tony Vieira and creative brand strategist Christian Vieira—Mōcean was engineered to challenge the high-stimulant, youth-centric marketing of conventional energy drinks. By introducing a taurine-free, immune-support formulation rooted in premium Eastern botanicals, the brand directly targets health-conscious professionals, parents, and athletes seeking sustained cognitive performance without the subsequent sugar crash or jittery fallout. The inspiration for Mōcean emerged out of a universal pain point in consumer packaged goods (CPG): the distinct lack of health-conscious energy products for mature demographics. Standing in a hospital gift shop during the late-night birth of his daughter, Christian Vieira recognized that the energy drink aisle was a neon landscape of excessive stimulants and artificial ingredients completely unaligned with adult lifestyle needs. To bridge this market gap, Christian partnered with his father, Tony Vieira. Bringing over 36 years of commercial brewing science experience from executive development roles at Anheuser-Busch, Coors, and Mark Anthony Brewing—where he spearheaded the scaling of Blue Moon and the technical quality infrastructure behind White Claw's market dominance—Tony applied precise formulation standards to revolutionize the clean energy space. While 99% of conventional energy drinks rely on standard chemical copy-pasting, Mōcean is engineered to meet the strict compliance and ingredient standards of premium natural grocers like Whole Foods Market and Sprouts. Mōcean distinguishes itself as the first functional energy drink in the United States to utilize shiso (Perilla frutescens), an ancient Eastern botanical highly regarded in Asian wellness traditions for its powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulating properties. This herbal foundation aligns with modern consumer shifts toward holistic wellness and daily preventative health. Rather than overloading the central nervous system with empty stimulants, Mōcean operates as a hybrid wellness supplement. The ingredient deck features a strategic matrix of functional adaptogens, vitamins, and minerals, including therapeutic doses of Elderberry extract, Echinacea, Zinc, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B12. It also incorporates Magnesium Citrate combined with natural Ocean Salt to mitigate physical fatigue and support neural hydration. In a major departure from industry standards, Mōcean contains zero taurine, proactively addressing emerging consumer awareness and scientific studies scrutinizing the long-term metabolic impacts of stimulant stacking. For clean energy, the beverage delivers a calibrated 130 mg of organic green tea caffeine per serving. This moderate dosing provides jitter-free cognitive focus, allowing high-performing adults to safely consume the product within recommended daily health boundaries. Mōcean explicitly rejects artificial, candy-flavored profiles like cotton candy or birthday cake, opting instead for crisp, subtly carbonated, and naturally sweetened options. The core flavor architecture includes Mandarin, a bright, nostalgic citrus profile; White Peach, a sophisticated and smooth floral flavor tailored for mature palates; Blueberry Pom, a rich, tart fusion of dark berries designed for a refreshing midday mental reset; and Strawberry Guava, a crisp, tropical profile that delivers authentic fruit notes without excessive sweetness. Representing the evolution of the functional beverage market, Mōcean successfully captures market share at the intersection of natural energy, daily immunity supplements, and clean-label transparency, anchoring its brand value under the core tagline: a body in mōcean stays in motion. As I look back on my childhood and my very first music studies, I realize that I was incredibly fortunate, blessed, actually. Not because I was gifted or because my parents were not only willing but were able to support my harp lessons. Not because I was in one of the music capitals of the world and had access to world class teachers. Not because I had so many opportunities and people that encouraged me along my journey. Well, yes, I was blessed because of all those things, certainly. But I want to talk today about a different gift that was given to me, one I didn't realize the value of until much later. The gift was this: I was always encouraged to play music outside the box. Let me explain. I started piano lessons when I was four years old, and my piano teacher was not only a fabulous musician, but a creative and generous teacher. My lessons included all the usual piano exercises - which I hated - and sonatinas - which I loved - and she also made sure that she gave me performance-worthy arrangements of popular music. I played arrangements of "Blue Moon" and "People" from Funny Girl and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that were written by pianists like Roger Williams. These were fancy arrangements that took quite a bit of technique and a lot of practice to play well, and I enjoyed them. But my teacher never stuck exactly to the printed page. She always had some alterations to add a little more pizzazz to the arrangement. We were always taking bass notes down an octave or playing another part up in the high register like a music box, or changing dynamics and tempo. What she taught me was that music was self-expression. It was about so much more than just playing the written notes. It was about making the notes say what you thought they should say. Please understand; we didn't take liberties with the classics. She made sure I played absolutely every note that Bach wrote on the page. But I learned very early on how to be creative in my music-making, and that has been a tremendous gift. I've never shied away from arranging, and in fact, it's one of my favorite things to do. I'd love every harpist to learn the freedom of making their music their own, and that's what this show is about. I actually went back about two years into the podcast archives to pull out this episode which speaks directly to this. If you've ever wondered about what it takes to make an arrangement, or how to go about it, this is the episode for you. And afterwards, I want to tell you about an opportunity - a new challenge, in fact - to work with me on your own arrangement. David Susko, a Martian geologist working for a NASA contractor is our guest. He builds and operates cameras for space missions, including a visible-light camera called MACIE (Mars Color Imager) that photographs the Martian surface at various scales and resolutions. Key points discussed: Moon before Mars. The Moon is a mandatory stepping stone — everything from Apollo to the ISS has been about learning to live and work in space before attempting Mars. Going straight to Mars carries too much risk. Historical context. Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo were proof-of-concept missions. The Saturn V rocket remains the gold standard. Retiring it in the 70s (and the engineers and facilities with it) was a costly decision NASA has been recovering from ever since. The rocket equation problem. The vast majority of fuel is spent just escaping Earth's gravity well. Every extra kilogram of payload requires exponentially more fuel, making heavy-lift missions extremely difficult. Today's rockets. Three heavy-lift vehicles are currently in play: NASA's SLS, SpaceX's Starship, and Blue Origin's New Glenn. All three are involved in Artemis. Artemis mission architecture. The plan involves multiple launches, orbital rendezvous and docking between the Orion capsule and the Starship lunar lander (or Blue Moon variant), new spacesuits from a private aerospace company, and astronauts landing near the lunar south pole. Artemis milestones so far. Artemis I (2022, uncrewed) flew around the Moon and successfully re-entered Earth's atmosphere. Artemis II will fly crew around the Moon. Artemis III will attempt the first crewed landing in decades. A first Moon landing in roughly 2–3 years is the current plan, though delays are likely. Target: lunar south pole / Shackleton Crater. The south pole is almost permanently shadowed and likely harbors water ice — a critical resource for long-term habitation. The VIPER rover (using ground-penetrating radar) is being sent to prospect for these resources. Long-term goal. Build permanent lunar infrastructure to support human habitation — a "Moon base" — as the launchpad for eventual Mars missions. Safety. The guest emphasizes not rushing; the Apollo program's near-perfect safety record shouldn't breed complacency, especially given tragedies like the Space Shuttle Columbia.

The Post Relevant Podcast is a secret brought to Earth through the wise Owl, handed off to a cadre of Hawks, red-eyed demon dogs, an army of Deer, an Air Force of Vultures, and borne to the foot of the the mystical Blue Heron, who blesses every episode and eventually drops them beneath the Blue Moon into the ears of local Rabbits. The Rabbits leave each episodes of the show on listener's doorsteps, wrapped inside an acorn shell encased in flower petals. Its a cottage industry, but very efficient!Twin Peaks: the Return: the DECODE returns with an interpretation of episode 9! Its a 'no-bells-and-whistles' soft reboot of our show, originally recorded in January 2025 at the beginning of the LA fires. Appropriate for a Twin Peaks podcast, and strangely synchronous for our current "Year of the Fire Horse" in 2026. Hosts Phil Ristaino and Justin Epifanio recount Justin's first-hand experience surviving the Los Angeles inferno. Then they go in deep into trying to explain TP:TR episode 9. Statements are made, like "Its a fucking morgue!" And they are not wrong. Cutting questions are posed, like "When did he lose his marbles?" Insights are given, like "When the dog got his cat's eyes?" Tammy poses. Chad huffs and puffs. William Hastings yearns for scuba diving and mixed drinks. All the while, the disembodied head and decapitated body of Major Briggs looms large, holds clues, and rings like a monastery bell. An important password:“Listen to Your Own Inner Wisdom. You are the Key to Your Own Life. Time to Speak the Truth”This powerful Full Moon in Sagittarius, May 31st/June 1st is really the illuminator of this “your re-storying" your unique Dream”. This lunar cycle presents a dynamic opportunity to take a real look at the ideas, thoughts and experiences that came forth during the Full Moon in Scorpio that happened at the beginning of May.This Moon offers both inner focus, and the opportunity to experience worldly experiences through connection to Cosmic Source. Guidance through trusting intuitive insights from the well of personal inspiration is the key for moving toward greater and higher vibrational consciousness.During this lunar cycle, the awareness of growth, expansion, plenty, and abundance are under major consideration. Even as we look out into the collective society, it's absolutely critical to dream one's own big dreams. What thoughts and dreams have been moving back and forward through your mind during this time? The notable aspect of this lunar cycle emphasizes concepts of greater self expansion, exploration, new perspective through inner awareness and spiritual renewal. With this Full Moon, Jupiter the planet of expansion, is having a conversation somewhere in your “Star Map”. Sagittarius is the sign of fiery and inspired direction. This sign brings a feeling of joy and adventure when you choose confidence, courage, and deep self-belief. Taking the chance to step out, and “Lucky” Jupiter will pave your way.During this Full Moon you are gaining an energetic boost, and being called upon to take action on something you've dreamed about during the Sun in Gemini idea generating stage. With this Full Moon as it illuminates the pathway. Jupiter is calling for expansion in a particular area of your life, so it is time to activate and actualize those dreams. Interestingly enough, this Moon really supports forward motion. Sagittarius is not a sign for looking back into the past. In some ways, this sign embodies the "Fool" card in the Tarot. The character in the card is definitely looking ahead, and standing ready to see what's over the horizon and next mountain. With Sagittarius energy, you have deep support to step fully into taking your vision, intention, desire or dream. What's most important thing is to belief in what you are choosing, which will offer the momentum for moving forward in your life. So, here it is Full Moon in Sagittarius, and all the planetary players are whispering that it's time for things to change The combination of the Moon and Jupiter is release with the lunar cycle of the full moon, and expansion through Jupiter signaling change and a focused on forward motion.I want to give recognition to the powerful supportive energies of Neptune and Saturn both being in the sign of Aries. The fiery energy of the other elemental fire sign is giving this rare "Blue Moon" added impetus. The air elemental of Gemini is important in providing a way for the ideas to be dispersed into the personal and collective consciousness. If you reflect on these signs (air, Gemini idea, with fire action of moving forward with Sagittarius), there is a completeness in understanding how thoughts become "things".So it's time to not only dream, the question is, how will your dream become reality and move your life in the direction you really want to go? Seeking new horizons through study and travelThe sign of Sagittarius represents the areas of life where the deepest beliefs about life are being questioned. The first stage in this questioning process is highlighted by what, and how much an individual believes in self? This lunar cycle is aligned with assessing the experience of inner self worth and how it is lived in daily life expression. Sagittarius is the sign that is always on a quest to understand what can be called the “higher mind”. Studies of a spiritual nature, through higher education, publishing, exploring other cultures are the ways in which the Sagittarian individual grows in Soul reconnection, emotional depth and life awareness. Trusting Your Own Voice of TruthAlong with Libra and Scorpio, Sagittarius is a relationship sign. It operates by seeing others as part of a collective consciousness. The impetus of this sign is to interact, to teach, to promote and to bring knowledge about truth, freedom, justice, equality, and spiritual insights to the group experience. Wherever Sagittarius energy is positioned within a chart, there's a need to share knowledge and wisdom about the Universal Source that is supporting all aspects of life. Sagittarius is a mutable sign, meaning that it thrives by interacting and communicating deep philosophical and spiritual topics. What is most important in understanding and using the wisdom of this sign, is the absolute requirement to embrace positive beliefs and values of integrity, truth, honesty and freedom for everyone. The Power and Path of Possibility Thinking with SagittariusEach of us carries a collection of inner subconscious programs that are associated with every experience we've ever encountered. Sagittarius is the sign that requires us to go into the significant areas of our lives, and examine the negative beliefs, “shadow” thoughts or low- level vibrational consciousness, where there's judgmentalness, prejudice, and narrow-mindedness about others.Sagittarius has the ability to see and operate from the “big picture experience''. An example of an individual with Moon in Sagittarius, is the cultural icon, Oprah. By studying her life trajectory, she reveals how the Sagittarian energy is activated through the deep belief that what is invisible can become visible. Sagittarius is a sign that taps the “higher intelligence” through what is known as the “Third Eye”. The symbol of this sign as half horse with a bow and arrow, deals with piercing the “veil” and seeing beyond the 3 D plane of matter and limitation. The Sagittarius Superpower is “Taking a Leap Of Faith”As a mutable sign, Sagittarius symbolizes the ability to trust, take physical and emotional risks that life is always supported by Universal or Infinite Source. This sign specializes in searching for and moving toward greater horizons.Looking inward and gaining an understanding of what is meaningful and worthwhile is essential. In this sign the relating principle is seen in desiring to merge with the many experiences encountered on the archetypal “quest” and journeying through life.Mutable signs and planets are the Communicators and Seekers of the ZodiacSagittarius/Gemini depict the archetypes of the “Teacher and Student”. These signs are associated with both adventure on the earth plane, as well as stepping into the inner and subjective experiences of life.Sagittarius is the sign that brings buoyancy, open hearted- optimism, confidence and courage to interactions and encounters with others. With this sign, there is much complexity because what appears to be obvious often has many layers of meaning, and has to be unraveled through intuitive reflections.Sagittarius is masculine fire sign, meaning that it inspires action, and has a need for direct experiencing of life. Wherever this sign is positioned in the chart is an indicator of the need for deep involvement in a specific area or arena of life.Even though Sagittarius is a fire sign, it has a kinship with the water sign Pisces. They both possess a shared awareness of what it means to have “faith” in living life from a deep Soul experience. Let's have an Astrology Conversation. I look forward to seeing you. The Blue Moon in Sagittarius arrives at 4:46am ET and she lands with weight. This is the second full moon of May, which means the month has been building toward this and the culmination energy is doubled. The Moon can be like a painter’s canvas, dabbed with many colors: the silver of a frosty night, the gold of honey, the orange of a ripe cantaloupe, even the deep red of blood. But it’s almost never blue – at least not in appearance. It sometimes is blue in name, though – including tonight. That’s because it’s the second full Moon of May – a repeat appearance known as a Blue Moon. The color of the Moon – full or not – depends on several factors. When the Moon is low in the sky, as it rises or sets, its light passes through a thicker layer of air. Molecules in the atmosphere scatter blue wavelengths of light, allowing the red to shine through. As the Moon climbs higher, we see more of its true color – gray. But the Moon is so bright that it looks white or silver. During a lunar eclipse, the Moon passes through Earth’s dark shadow. But sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere makes the Moon look dark orange or red. In rare cases, the Moon can actually look blue. That happens after volcanic eruptions or big forest fires. These events pump out particles that scatter red light, allowing the blue to shine through. After the eruption of Krakatoa, in 1883, the Moon appeared blue for months around the entire globe. Whatever its color, enjoy tonight’s Blue Moon. And look quite close to it throughout the night for the star Antares, the heart of the scorpion. They’ll be closest as they set. Send us Fan MailNate's on the road this week and Brian and I start off praising the glory of a good night's sleep. It's quite elusive these days, so we appreciate it even more. It can really work wonders. We also discovered Haas Euphorics and chat about those. Botanical extract meant to be added to finished beer. They've got blends to add a rounded tropical profile or just a single fruit note if that's your thing. We're not sure what brewers are using these, we'll have to do some digging. We just can't seem to get rid of James Watt. After the sale of BrewDog he's planning to open a new brewery called "Second Best." Is anyone excited for this? Sounds like he plans to give shares to the people that got the shaft in the Equity for Punks program. We'll begrudgingly follow this news to see where it goes.On a more positive note it sounds like there's been some activity at the Anchor Brewery. Not much to report now outside of speculation but local reported seeing contractors there for things like refrigeration work. We'll follow this news with much more interest. In other news scientists unearthed a 2,300 year old bottle of beer in pretty good shape for its age, Voodoo Brewing faces trouble but franchises should stay open, proof that Nubians drank antibiotic beer, and your Blue Moon is gonna get even more blue, temporarily. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! NASA's Moon Base plans just got a major update — and then Blue Origin had a serious New Glenn pad anomaly at LC-36 that could shake up the timeline for upcoming lunar missions. In this episode of Today In Space, we break down NASA's latest Moon Base update, including new awards for lunar landers, terrain vehicles, lunar drones, and the next phase of Artemis-related infrastructure. We also react to the New Glenn pad anomaly during static-fire preparations, what it could mean for Blue Origin, the Artemis architecture, and the broader push to build a permanent human presence on the Moon. Thankfully, no one was harmed — and the payload was not onboard — but this is still a major engineering and programmatic setback. Space is demanding, and moments like this remind us just how much risk, testing, failure analysis, and teamwork go into building the future of exploration. We'll also look at the path forward: root cause analysis, potential pad repairs, whether other launch providers could step in, and how NASA's lunar campaign may adapt from here. In this episode: NASA Moon Base update Blue Origin New Glenn pad anomaly at LC-36 What this means for Artemis and lunar missions Blue Moon, lunar landers, rovers, and Moon Base infrastructure Astrolab, Lunar Outpost, Firefly, and Moonfall lunar drones Why engineering failures are part of building reliable space systems The future of commercial lunar exploration Watch the full NASA Moon Base update here: https://youtube.com/live/GrsWp798Fvg?feature=share Follow Today In Space for grounded space science, exploration updates, and honest conversations about the future of humanity beyond Earth. What a wild week in space news! We were all set to discuss Starship Test Flight 12 and NASA's recent press conference updating their lunar base plans, when on Thursday night, Blue Origin lost a New Glenn rocket on the pad during a static test. The explosion appears to have severely damaged the launch structure, LC36, along with the loss of the rocket. Fortunately, there were no casualties. But this does throw NASA's schedule for returning American astronauts to the moon into question, given that the agency had recently signaled their choice of Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander for Artemis 4 in 2028. Together we will journey through a guided selkie meditation of remembrance and return — a journey into the deep waters of intuition, identity, longing, and reclamation. This circle may stir themes of reclaiming hidden parts of yourself, releasing old identities, reconnecting with intuition, and remembering who you were before survival became your shape. The circle will include a guided selkie meditation, journal prompts, tarot and oracle reflection. I will pull cards for the collective circle, and you are very welcome to bring your own tarot or oracle cards to pull for yourself during the evening. Robert Kaplow is the author of numerous novels. In 2008, director Richard Linklater filmed an adaptation of Robert's novel ME AND ORSON WELLES. In the past, Robert has taught English and Creative Writing, and for over a decade, he and his band (“Moe Moskowitz and the Punsters”) wrote, produced, and performed satirical sketches for NPR's Morning Edition. BLUE MOON is his first original screenplay. BLUE MOON tells the story of Lorenz Hart's struggles with alcoholism and mental health as he tries to save face during the opening of "Oklahoma!". The film stars Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, and Andrew Scott. In this interview, we talk about the film adaptation of his novel ME AND ORSON WELLES, the development of the screenplay for BLUE MOON with Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke, the creative process of writing a plausible voice for Lorenz Hart, plus advice for writers on patience, persistence, and keeping the faith when facing rejection.
