Welcome to the daily 63rd New York Film Festival podcast. Today we're featuring two conversations with Richard Linklater and the teams of his two NYFF selections. First, NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim moderates a conversation with Linklater and Blue Moon's screenwriter Robert Kaplow, as well asd its stars Ethan Hawke, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott, followed by a conversation with Linklater and Nouvelle Vague's Zoey Deutch, Guillaume Marbeck, Aubry Dullin, and Michèle Pétin, moderated by NYFF programmer Florence Almozini. Blue Moon is a portrait of one crucial night in the melancholy life of legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart (played by Ethan Hawke, in a tour de force performance). The film is a surprising yet entirely fitting addition to the Richard Linklater canon. And the spirit of cinematic revolution is alive and well in Linklater's affectionate and wildly entertaining passion project, Nouvelle Vague, which transports the viewer back to a creative landmark: the 1959 making of Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard. Nouvelle Vague opens at Film at Lincoln Center on October 31st, with the first week of screenings presented on 35mm. Tickets are on sale now. The 63rd New York Film Festival is presented in partnership with Rolex. Get tickets at filmlinc.org.

The Oakland A's of the 70's were at their absolute best when it came to October baseball. They beat the Big Red Machine to win the 1972 World Series. They beat the Miracle Mets in '73 to win it again. And in 1974, they made it back-to-back-to-back when they disposed of the Dodgers in 5 games. Flooded with names like Catfish & Reggie, Blue Moon & Vida, Campy and Geno, they had talent and swagger and were the team to beat heading into the 1975 postseason. Playing centerfield for those World Series winning teams in '73 & '74 was speedster Billy North. Acquired by Charlie Finley from the Cubs prior to the 1973 season, North immediately fit in with the defending champs and his style of play was exactly what manager Dick Williams loved… speed and defense. North would lead the AL in stolen bases in 1974 and 1976 when he stole a career high 75 bags while playing a sterling centerfield. After missing the entire postseason in '73 when the Athletics repeated as Champs by beating Tom Seaver and the Mets in 7 games, North was looking forward to the '74 season and a chance to play in the playoffs. But on June 5th in Detroit, he and Reggie Jackson had an altercation that ended up with both of them injured as well as catcher Ray Fosse. It wasn't the first time the Swinging A's brawled with each other and it had very little effect on the team's play. Three months later they were back in the World Series for the 3rd straight year, with Fosse, Jackson and North all in the starting lineup. Despite having won the last two World Series titles, the A's were underdogs against the Dodgers who won 102 games in the National League and they didn't give the A's much respect going into their matchup. On the POP podcast, North tells us how he was called the “Paperboy” because he read all the newspapers and he told his teammates on the flight back from Baltimore after winning the ALCS that a Dodger player was quoted as saying that there were only two players on the A's that could play for the Dodgers… the champs didn't need more than that… 5 games later… they were champs again for the 3rd straight year. North tells us how he and Reggie put that incident behind them and remain friends to this day… and how that team 50 years later still gathers together. He talks of how Dusty Baker influenced his life and remains one of his best friends and how Dusty honored him at an All-Star game a couple of years ago… and he talks about the NorthLegacyProject.com that he helped start in honor of his mom to help kids with special needs. For a man who made a living stealing bags in his 20's, he now lives to give back in his 70's.  A 2-time champion of the only team in baseball history other than the Yankees to win 3 straight World Series Championships. NASA revive misión lunar cancelada con Blue Origin

FLASH DIARIO de El Siglo 21 es Hoy

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2025 7:36

Frosty by Mark Winterbottom The incredible true story of the boy from Doonside who became a Bathurst king. Mark Winterbottom's story is unlike any other in motorsport. It's not about privilege or million-dollar sponsors - it's the tale of a working-class kid with a dream so big it defied the odds. Frosty's story is a motorsport fairy tale that is also proof that with heart, hustle and an unyielding will to succeed, you can achieve greatness. Mark went on to win 10 Australian national kart titles and 25 state championships before transitioning into Formula Ford in 2001. His meteoric rise continued in 2003 when he clinched the Konica V8 Supercar Series Championship and was honoured with the Mike Kable Young Gun Award. Mark would also become one of Ford's most famous drivers when he broke through to beat Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup by winning the 2015 Supercars Championship in his flying Falcon. Frosty is more than a story of fast cars, chequered flags and brushes with some of motorsport's greats, including Lewis Hamilton and Peter Brock. It's about resilience, family and overcoming life's biggest challenges. In this inspiring memoir, Mark shares the raw truth of his hardest battles: the irreparable fallout with his father, supporting his mother through cancer, and pushing forward when most would have given up. From the streets of western Sydney to the summit of Mount Panorama, Mark Winterbottom's story is a powerful reminder that impossible dreams can be chased - and won. Reacher: The Stories Behind The Stories by Lee Child From global bestseller and creator of Jack Reacher, comes Lee Child's first-ever autobiographical collection. From urgently scribbling out his debut Killing Floor in pencil (the stub of which he still owns), to taking a step back with Blue Moon, and everything in between, here are 24 fascinating personal reflections on his life and work, crafted across decades. Whether it is through Lee's moving account of meeting a fan years after her mother brought her to a book signing, to facing his first computer and the coming of the internet, to writing about New York just before – and just after – 9/11, to later seeing his novels adapted for the big screen . . . each riveting piece deftly evokes where he was, psychologically and physically, when he wrote each novel. Lee has clearly felt unwavering gratitude for his readers since 1997. And these honest, witty and wise reflections were originally designed for fans of Reacher who may be interested in a ‘behind-the-scenes' – or, in Lee's words: ‘why the books turned out the way they did'. But this collection is also so much more. It is the story of a man who once put pencil to paper in an attempt to turn his luck around . . . and who made every word count. There have been a number of big summer movies like "F1: The Movie," "Superman" and "Jurrassic World: Rebirth." But these popcorn movies are not likely destined for big awards. Studios like to hold back the Oscar contenders for the fall, so in this week's episode we dive into which movies to watch for this fall and into the winter. You can also review a full list of notable films below. August releases “Honey Don’t!” – Ethan Coen continues his Margaret Qualley-a-thon with this comedy about a private investigator who looks into a series of deaths tied to a church. Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans co-star. “Splitsville” – Divorce makes strange bedfellows, particularly when the ex discovers his best friends have an open marriage. Dakota Johnson, Kyle Marvin star. “Eden” – Looking for a better life, a group of people head to the Galapagos and realize what they’re up against. Jude Law and Ana de Armas star in this based-in-fact drama directed by Ron Howard. “Relay” – Payoffs between corporations brings a broker into the line of fire. Riz Ahmed, Lily James and Sam Worthington star. “Hollywood Grit” – A private investigator has to find out what happened to his daughter. Tyrese, Max Martini star. “Lurker” – How strange is the world of stardom? A worker finds out as he gets closer to a music star. Alex Russell wrote and directed this drama starring Theodore Pellerin and Archie Madekwe. “The Thursday Murder Club” – Friends in a retirement home solve mysteries. Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley are in the home. “The Roses” – An updated look at “War of the Roses” lets Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman square off. Jay Roach directs. “Caught Stealing” – Austin Butler gets the Darren Aronofsky treatment as a baseball player caught in the underbelly of New York City. Bad Bunny is along for the ride. “The Toxic Avenger”—When a janitor is the victim of a toxic accident, a new crimefighter emerges. Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige star. “Jaws” – The first summer blockbuster returns to the big screen after months on television. Now, you can see what audiences were scared of in 1975. “Love, Brooklyn” – Friends navigate the pitfalls of life in Brooklyn. September releases “Megadoc” – Mike Figgis looks at the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.” “The Conjuring: Last Rites” – Those creepy paranormal investigators say they’re taking on one last case (sure) to settle their own lives. Patric Wilson and Vera Farmiga return. “The Threesome” – A threesome leads to problems, particularly since life’s not always fantasies. Zoey Deutch and Jonah Hauer-King star. “Twinless” – Two men bond in a support group. Dylan O’Brien, Lauren Graham and Arkira Chantaratananond star. “Hamilton” – Celebrating its “ten-cennial,” the Broadway hit brings its performance capture version (which ran on Disney+) to the big screen. Updates about the performers make this more than a night out. “The Baltimorons” – Sobriety leads to a dental emergency which leads to a romance with the dentist. Jay Duplass directs; Michael Strassner co-writes and stars. “The Long Walk” —You thought the Hunger Games were bad, how about this: Teenage boys compete in a walking contest. If they don’t keep up, they’re shot. Based on a Stephen King story, it’s one of the year’s most harrowing. “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” – Those Smell the Glove guys reunite after a 15-year hiatus for one last concert. Rob Reiner directs; the original actors return. “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” – The Crawleys face scandal, financial ruin and social disgrace. To get out of it, they look to a younger generation. Expect all but Maggie Smith to be back. “The History of Sound” – Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor embark on a World War I project that brings them close to their country and each other. “Code 3” – One last shift for a paramedic who has to train his replacement. What could go wrong? Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery star. “Him” – What a guy won’t do to be a football star. Here, one goes to a compound where anything can happen. Tyriq Withers, Marlon Wayans and Julia Fox star. “American Sweatshop – Yup, it’s the world of social media. An insider discovers just how dark the world is (like we didn’t know). “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” – Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie bond in a unique journey (which, of course, says nothing but suggests there’s more to this than two big stars). “The Summer Book” – A girl and her grandmother become closer in Finland. Emily Matthews and Glenn Close star. (Could this be the one that finally wins Close an Oscar?) “Xeno” – Ready for another E.T.? This one finds a teenager relating to the alien. Josh Cooke, Lulu Wilson star. “Waltzing with Brando” – When Marlon Brando wants an ecologically perfect retreat in Tahiti, he calls on a Los Angeles architect. Tia Carrere, Richard Dreyfuss and Jon Heder star. “Eleanor the Great” – Scarlett Johansson directs June Squibb in this drama about a 94-year-old who has plenty of stories to tell. “One Battle After Another” – Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this dark comedy about a group of revolutionaries reuniting to save one of their group’s daughter. Paul Thomas Anderson directs; Benicio Del Toro (who starred in a Wes Anderson film earlier this year) and Sean Penn co-star. October releases “The Smashing Machine” – Dwayne Johnson tries his hand at mixed-martial arts as UFC champion Mark Kerr. The makeup may be a stretch, but Benny Safdie directs, Emily Blunt disappears in an unlikely role. “Tron: Ares” – Jared Leto gets to run the race. Jeff Bridges is here, too, but this is about a new program (Ares) that’s about to embark on a dangerous mission. “Roofman” – A robber evades authorities by hanging out in a toy store. Channing Tatum plays the thief, Peter Dinklage and Kirsten Dunst swirl around him. “Anemone” – Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement for this film directed by his son, Ronan. The plot? Good question, but it will have that DD-L prestige. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” – Jennifer Lopez stars in the Tony winner fans have been asking for. The big question: Were they looking for Lopez to star in it? Bill Conden directs. “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You” – Rose Byrne gets the Oscar buzz as a woman trying to juggle multiple traumas, including a sick child and an absent husband. “Soul on Fire” – This is the story of a St. Louis native who survived burns which covered his body. Joel Courtney plays John O’Leary. William H. Macy and John Corbett co-star. “Good Fortune” – An angel meddles in the lives of a venture capitalist and a gig worker. Seth Rogen, Azizi Ansari and Keke Palmer star in this comedy written and directed by Ansari. Black Phone 2 – More trouble ensues when the phone rings. Sequel to a better-than-average horror film. “After the Hunt” – Julia Roberts plays a college professor who wonders what could happen when a student levels an accusation against a colleague. Andrew Scott plays Richard Rodgers. “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” -- Bruce Springsteen gets the Bob Dylan treatment with Jeremy Allen White in the title role. This, however, only covers the creation of the “Nebraska” album. “Regretting You” – Family issues emerge after the death of a husband and father. Based on Colleen Hoover’s best-seller, it stars Allison Williams and Mckenna Grace. “The Watchers” – M. Night Shayamalan’s daughter Ishana makes her directorial debut with this thriller about an artist who gets trapped in an Irish forest. “Anniversary” – A good cast (Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch) in a thriller directed by Polish filmmaker Jan Komasa. “Bugonia” – Emma Stone continues her run with Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is a remake of a South Korean effort about two men kidnapping an executive, convinced she’s an alien bent on destroying Earth. “Nouvelle Vague” – Richard Linklater has another entry this year. This one’s a look at Jean-Luc Godard and actress Jean Seberg. Guillaume Marbeck and Zoey Deutch start. Indecipherable – A boy, home alone, gets shaken by the things that go bump in the night. Wicked: For Good – At long last, we find out what happened to Glinda and Elphaba. Expect at least one new song and bigger roles for the men in their lives. No place like home? That’s included, too. Cynthia Orivo and Ariana Grande could double up on the Oscar nominations. Rental Family – Oscar winner Brendan Fraser plays an American actor who plays roles in other people’s lives. Throw in your questions and some festival musings, with a full Telluride preview (besides this one I did earlier this week here), and it's a full episode...As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 253rd one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

Richard Prigg: Celebrating the Textures, Colors, Voices of his Materials

Author and architectural glass artist Robert Sowers wrote that lead should be considered a design element and not just a matrix to hold stained glass. That idea spoke to Richard Prigg, who has developed a body of work that celebrates lead and solder as much as it does breathtakingly beautiful glass. Though historically stained glass windows conveyed the teachings of the church, Prigg's work intentionally tells no stories, but rather impacts the viewer by combining more expressive lead work with various light-modulating elements of and beyond the window itself. States Prigg: “I have an aversion to storytelling. I feel that it can often move the viewer away from the work so that instead of observing and considering what is in front of them, they fly off to the never-never land where the story takes them. Of course, I recognize that storytelling is an integral part of being human. We tell stories to one another to help define our identities. The stories in our culture give us a we that can guide our ways of living. But there is a dark side of storytelling, and it is intrinsic to the spoken word. It is our human tendency to use story to deceive. So, I am distrustful of art with a story, because a story can be a lie. I am distrustful of religion with a story, too. Religion and art – they are such good friends.” A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Prigg started his career at Beyer Stained Glass, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He later joined Willet Hauser Architectural Glass, the largest stained glass studio in the US, where he served as General Manager from 1999 to 2011. There, he oversaw challenging projects such as restoration of the Alcuin and Charlemagne and The Death of Sir Philip Sidney windows, which included re-creating missing plates for areas of the windows where the glass had chemically decomposed. He also oversaw the creation of $3.5 million of gothic stained glass fabricated by Willet Hauser for St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston. It was huge job that took 2.5 years to finish. Says Prigg: “I worked closely with Crosby Willet, who was incredibly generous to me and taught me a lot about stained glass. He introduced me to everyone in the business more or less. That included Charlie Lawrence who became a mentor and friend as well.” In December of 1999, Prigg left Willet Hauser and opened Sycamore Studios with his wife Ellen Lustgarten, where in addition to repair, restoration and new work, he developed a unique body of personal work featuring mouthblown antique sheet glass in conjunction with calligraphic lead lines built up with lead came. These works include Spin for a Western Light and Two Circles and a Dot. Later, he began to explore concrete as a matrix, resulting in works such as Blue Moon, Tossed and his recent Tower series. Prigg also uses his Lansdowne studio to showcase the work of young artists who often can't get into galleries.  Prigg is a member of the Stained Glass Association of America and has served on the board of directors of the American Glass Guild (AGG). He is the recipient of two AGG AGNX Awards for Excellence in the Art of Stained Glass. In 2025, he presented From Artist To Artisan To Artist: How I Painted Myself Into a Corner and Escaped through a Stained Glass Window at the AGG conference. Recent exhibitions of his work include: 2025 at the AGG AGNX Show, Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, Mesa, Arizona; 2025, Juried Show: Vibrance at the Aston Mills Art Center, Aston PA; and the 2023 Juried Show: 100 Skulls, Aston Mills Arts Center. His work can be found in private collections in Philadelphia as well as at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists. Says Prigg, about goals for his personal work: “When I began working with glass, I was so in love with these materials – lead and glass – that I just wanted to find ways to show people what delighted me. I wanted people to be presented with these materials in a way so that they would be engaged in the textures, the colors, the voices of the materials.”
