Is There an Echo in Here? A Podcast About Echo & the Bunnymen

This episode nearly did us in. The terrain was so broad and the roads were worn and well-trodden. For weeks, we made wrong way turns down dead end alleys and ran off the rails a couple of times before we arrived at the delightful adventure we now present to you. We thank our lucky stars that we found a map in the form of an article by Will Sergeant (guitarist for Echo & the Bunnymen), which appeared in Q Magazine in 2013. Using this article as our guide we navigate the prog-rock beginnings of punk. We also discuss Captain Beefheart's hard feelings about the scene. We explore some misconceptions about punk and revel in the unearthed treasure that is the band Death (Detroit). We make our way to Andy Warhol's Factory where many of Ian McCulloch's heroes hung about. We then cross back over the Atlantic to meet up with some rough and tumble kids forming bands in the suburbs of London. Last but not least, Courtney reveals her OTHER favorite band. Its an episode for the ages!

This week's episode we dive into Andy Warhol's Factory and research which of his muses is the hottest (with apologies to Grace Jones, who would have absolutely swept up in this episode were it not for the fact she is still alive.) between trans babe Candy Darling vs. fashion icon Edie Sedgwick, it's a nigh impossible choice. With John Wilson. Ian Rankin talks to John about the latest investigation by his much-loved detective, John Rebus - who has returned to the Edinburgh CID, but at a lower rank. The story is set amidst the current reform to the structure of the Scottish police - and Rebus finds himself in the middle of a culture clash between his fellow old-hands, and younger officers who use social media and what Rebus calls "touchy-feely policing methods". The Bible is an epic, 10 hour mini-series that dramatises the Old and New Testaments - from Genesis to Revelation. Each episode is action-packed: the first one, for example, includes Eden, Noah, Abraham and Isaac, and Moses parting the Red Sea. Natalie Haynes considers whether the series has mass-appeal, or is strictly for viewers interested in religion. The Beatles, David Bowie and Pink Floyd have all had their music mixed in the studio by legendary producer and engineer Ken Scott. He discusses working in Abbey Road, why The Beatles' White Album proved to be pivotal in his career, and the techniques he developed to create a distinctive sound. Stephen Shore is a pioneer of contemporary photography; after developing his style at Andy Warhol's Factory in the 1960s, he was the first living artist to have a solo exhibition of colour photography at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York. Shore continues to focus on the everyday subject matter that brought him attention - open highways, motel interiors, pedestrians and plates of food - but now works in Hebron, Abu Dhabi and Ukraine. Shore discusses his new exhibition, Something + Nothing, which shows his newer photographs side-by-side with work from the 1970s. Producer: Rebecca Nicholson.

Last week's show was ALL about mosaic art. This time we feature a range of artistic endeavors. DINORAH de JESUS RODRIGUEZ creates animation the old fashioned way: painting and scratching on film, cell by cell. Hours of painstaking work are required to create a few seconds of screen time. French born artist, ULTRA VIOLET reveled in the juiced-up atmosphere of Andy Warhol's Factory scene during her youth, but will also describe how her orientation toward life and art took a sudden turn.We won't leave mosaics out of the mix, however. Two distinctive snippets from the SAMA conference convey the rewards of participation. Artist CAROL SHELKIN describes the challenges of teaching a workshop in stained glass mosaic portraiture within a compressed time frame. Then JESSE WOZNIAK relates the experience of staffing the booth for his family's mosaic supply companies, Wits End Mosaic and meeting their customers face to face. Please tune in to www.blogtalkradio.com/MosaicOfArt -3-4pm on Sunday. (register if you like, so you can join the chat room). These conversations that I will air Sunday are pre-recorded, but if you would like to phone in during the show to comment on the interviews or your experience at the mosaic conference in Austin, please do so. Why do some artists become famous, while others labor in obscurity? In this presentation, art historian Erika Doss will trace the construction of art world celebrity from Jackson Pollock's feature spread in Life magazine in 1949 through Andy Warhol's Factory fame, to the present art world infatuation with Matthew Barney. Doss is professor of art history at the University of Colorado, where she specializes in American, modern and contemporary art, visual culture studies, and cultural history. Recorded November 30, 2006.
