A new study out of Canada finds that suicide rates among transgender individuals are significantly higher than in the general population.By itself, this isn't exactly news, but it does add to a growing body of research that shows that people who actually go through with “gender-affirming surgeries” have higher rates of suicide and poorer mental health outcomes than those who don't.Let's go through this research together.

New research shows a sharp decline in college students identifying as transgender. Dr. Kathy Koch and Wayne Stender unpack what's behind the trend, why it's hopeful, and how parents can raise children anchored in God's truth instead of cultural confusion.  

This week Ryan Tsapatsaris is back and joins Elizabeth for discussion about bullying behaviors.  A recent study of Middle and High School aged participants revealed that bullied students admitted to also engaging in bullying behaviors.  The relationship was stronger for gender non-conforming students than for cisgender students.  Transgender identities were also more strongly associated with perpetration of bullying than subjection to bullying.  Ryan and Elizabeth describe the study and findings.  We also discuss some interesting aspects of the data set, which becomes a jumping off point for a summary of recent trends in gender identification: As of 2023, Generation Z survey respondents have been much less likely to identify as either trans or queer.  We also talk about the risks involved in doing this kind of research and secondary analysis of data.  Social scientists should be able to pose difficult and unpopular questions, and extend research and theory to contemporary social issues, without constant worries about interpersonal and professional cancellation campaigns.Podcast notesTopic article:Heino, E., Ellonen, N., & Kaltiala, R. JACKED Transgender Swimmer BANNED from women's swimming after REFUSING to take SEX TEST!

A state lawmaker is pushing for laws to protect students from inappropriate relationships in K-12 schools. Two Minnesota women pleaded guilty Tuesday in a scheme to defraud taxpayers by overbilling Medicaid for substance abuse treatment.Minneapolis police have arrested a person suspected of throwing two Molotov cocktails into an ice cream shop. It happened at Fletcher's Ice Cream and Cafe on East Hennepin Avenue. No one was hurt.Advocates pressuring the state Board of Investment to cut financial ties to Israel staged a sit-in Tuesday at the Retirement Systems Building in St. Paul. The protest was planned for the same day as the board's quarterly meeting. The protesters refused to leave the building when it closed for the day, and several were arrested.An asphalt and aggregate products business with many locations across Minnesota says it will be closing some of those facilities by the end of the year with nearly 300 employees losing their jobs. Minnesota Paving and Materials sent a notice to the state announcing the permanent closure of 14 of its operations in the state, including quarries in Owatonna and New Ulm and an asphalt plant in Kasota. The company's notice did not offer any details on why it's closing those locations.

In an opinion released Wednesday morning, the Minnesota Supreme Court largely sided with a transgender weightlifter who sued USA Powerlifting after the organization banned her from competing in its women's division.The decision comes after a lengthy legal battle that began in 2021. Athlete JayCee Cooper alleged in her lawsuit that USA Powerlifting, a national organizer of weight lifting competitions, violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act.MPR News reporter Matt Sepic joined Minnesota Now to explain the ruling.
