In this episode, author J. Robert Lennon joins hosts Sandra Newman and Catherine Nichols to discuss Kazuo Ishiguro's novel-in-the-form-of-an-extended-dream, The Unconsoled (1995). Why is this novel called a masterpiece by some (including the participants in this conversation), while being dismissed as rambling and pointless by others? J. Robert Lennon is the author of nine novels, including Familiar, Broken River, and Subdivision, and the story collections Pieces for the Left Hand, See You in Paradise, and Let Me Think. He lives in Ithaca, New York. His most recent books are available for order and pre-order here. You can find all his other books, and more information here. And, as a bit of supplemental reading on The Unconsoled, here's a LitHub piece giving Ishiguro's own list of the dream techniques he used in the novel. Learn more about your ad choices. Mike Anthony's first book, Life At Hamilton, chronicles the extraordinary time he spent as a theater bartender with an up-close perspective of Hamilton: An American Musical as it rocketed into Broadway history. Beyond his life in theater, Mike's journey took an unexpected turn when his dad passed, leading him down a remarkable path of discovery. He now spends a good portion of his time exploring evidence suggestive of the survival of consciousness beyond the demise of the physical body. A part of Mike's story is told in the documentary series, Surviving Death. J. Robert Harris, whom most people just call J. R., is a septuagenarian and a still active and an enthusiastic outdoorsman! He enjoys backpacking, canoeing, skiing, rock and ice climbing, and has been a licensed wilderness guide. Through the years, he has learned how to enjoy, not simply endure, the scant comforts of being totally self-sufficient for extended periods of time in isolated locations. In 1993, Harris s many expeditions got him elected into the prestigious Explorers Club, where he remains an engaged member.
