In this week's podcast episode, I sat down with Florence Gaub, the Director of Research at the NATO Defense College in Rome. A World Economic Forum's Global Future Council member, and Vice-President of the European Forum Alpbach, Florence is a master of strategic foresight and international security. Her latest book, The Future, is a must-read, exploring how humanity's visions of tomorrow have shifted in different historical contexts. Our conversation spanned various domains, from the fascinating work being done at NATO to her new book, which I read and absolutely loved. Although it's not out in English yet, I have been assured that the release is on the horizon – so keep your eyes peeled! In our conversation, Florence walked us through her career, the impact of her recent publication, and, as always, the four books which have been most pivotal in her life and her work. From a mysterious Dutch novel from her childhood to Isaac Asimov's The Foundation, each pick tells a unique story about how we perceive time, and how this has changed in line with the maturation of our societies. Excitingly, Florence also shared some insights into the methodology of strategic foresight and the ethical implications of forecasting the future – and the technologies she thinks we'll look back on and laugh at in 100 years time. Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Florence's four books were: The Towers of February, Tonke Dragt (1973) The Foundation Part 1, Isaac Asimov (1951) Nos Derniers Festins, Chantal Pelletier (2019) Julia, Sandra Newman (2023)

With permission from the Orwell estate, Sandra Newman's latest novel takes place in the same world and with many of the same characters as 1984, but retold through the eyes of Winston Smith's love interest, Julia. It's a deep exploration of women's experiences under totalitarianism, and as Newman tells NPR's Scott Simon, an appreciation of the original that doubles down on some of Orwell's humor and ability to capture the psyche of fear — and unexpected comfort — under political tyranny. This week's BFG podcast is a feast for the brain. Michael Washburn engages host Neal Pollack in a discussion of Sandra Newman's provocative and "very raunchy" novel 'Julia', a brilliant and extended riff of the world of Oceania in George Orwell's '1984.' Neal somewhat wondered what Newman was getting at, but Michael found her extension of the world extremely compelling and disturbing, a fresh warning about the dangers of totalitarianism. BFG book club recommends it!'Napoleon' has finally arrived in theaters, and Stephen Garrett stops by to talk with Neal about the ultimate dad movie. They both really enjoyed the battles of Austerlitz and Waterloo and some of Joaquin Phoenix's campier lines. Stephen would like to see more of the charisma that made Bonaparte so beloved to the French people. Totally fair. But Neal will brook no criticism of Ridley Scott's Napoleon, the movie of the year if not even close to the best movie of the year.'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,' the Hunger Games prequel, took both Neal and contributor Sara Stewart by surprise. They both enjoyed the gritty early days of Panem vibe, both appreciated the good-quality country-style music, and found the performances persuasive. There's a reason it's a hit, though the love story is unconvincing and the act 3 coda goes on a bit too long. Still very much worth watching, just as the show is very much worth listening to.Enjoy!

Is there any end in sight?“Freedom of Screech.” Former President Trump's speech—and the right to it—is increasingly becoming an issue in his various criminal and civil trials, both legal and otherwise (as evidenced by a recent bout of angry shouting he pursued on the stand in his New York civil case). How have courts been balancing the equities? Is there something they can do better?“No, no—THAT's what the Insurrection Act is for.” In an effort spearheaded by co-conspirator number four himself Jeffrey Clark, President Trump and his allies are reportedly planning for a revenge campaign if he returns to the White House, beginning with a complete takeover of the Justice Department. How realistic are these plans? What can be done to stop them? For object lessons, Alan recommended Sandra Newman's “Julia,” a retelling of the classic “1984” from a new perspective. Quinta gave a similar bump to Brandon Taylor's new novel, “The Late Americans.” And Scott rolled logs for his latest piece for Lawfare, a retrospective on the legacy of the War Powers Resolution fifty years after its enactment. To mark Halloween, Duran Duran have released Danse Macabre, a “spooky concept” album. Samira talks to Simon Le Bon and John Taylor about working with Nile Rogers, covering The Specials' Ghost Town and taking pop music seriously. This evening Filkin's Drift play the last of almost 50 concerts, concluding their two month that has seen them travel 870 miles…on foot. The duo has walked from gig to gig, carrying their instruments. As they reach Chepstow they tell Samira about their approach to sustainable touring and how this connects with ancient Welsh bardic tradition. Born in 1923, the artist Dobrivoje Beljkasic found refuge in Bristol after the outbreak of the Bosnian War. His daughter Dee Smart and author Priscilla Morris celebrate his life and legacy on the centenary of his birth, marked by a new exhibition in Sarajevo. George Orwell's seminal Nineteen Eighty-Four continues to occupy a lauded, and sometimes controversial, position in political discourse and popular culture three-quarters of a century after it was first written. Sandra Newman discusses reimagining the story from the perspective of Winston Smith's underwritten lover in her new novel, Julia.

Shakespeare and Company

If you thought life on Airstrip one was tough for Winston Smith, you ain't seen nothing yet. Because in JULIA, Sandra Newman's reimagining of Orwell's nightmare, if men have it hard, you can bet women have it harder. Taking the roughly sketched character of Julia—Winston's love interest and possible betrayer—Sandra Newman gives her a surname, a history, a life of her own. In short, she breathes a soul into her. And in doing so, not only does she allow readers to revisit 1984 with new eyes but creates a novel that stands tall in its own terrifying pair of jackboots.Buy Julia: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/julia-3SANDRA NEWMAN is the author of The Country of Ice Cream Star (Longlisted for the Women's Prize), The Only Good Thing Anyone Has Ever Done (shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award), Cake, The Heavens and The Men. What would happen, to the world, to society, to minds, if one day all the Men, and boys—everyone with a Y chromosome in fact—just disappeared? Newman's vision is of a world set free, but also a world plunged into mourning, in which some structures collapse while others hold firm, in which certain of those left behind cling on to the “religious” idea of Men, and all they stood for, while others set about adapting, organising and rebuilding something better. Buy The Men here: https://shakespeareandcompany.com/I/9781783789016/the-men*SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR BONUS EPISODESLooking for Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses? https://podfollow.com/sandcoulyssesIf you want to spend even more time at Shakespeare and Company, you can now subscribe for regular bonus episodes and early access to Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses.Subscribe on Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/sandcoSubscribe on Apple Podcasts here: https://podcasts.apple.com/fr/podcast/shakespeare-and-company-writers-books-and-paris/id1040121937?l=enAll money raised goes to supporting “Friends of Shakespeare and Company” the bookshop's non-profit, created to fund our noncommercial activities—from the upstairs reading library, to the writers-in-residence program, to our charitable collaborations, and our free events.*Sandra Newman is the author of four previous novels; The Only Good Thing Anyone Has Ever Done, (shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award), Cake, The Country of Ice Cream Star (longlisted for the Bailey's Prize for Women's Literature) and The Heavens. Sometimes the conversations that I have are pure fun. Sometimes informational. This time our conversation filled my heart with love and understanding. My friend Sandra Newman has been a part of my family for many years. We met years ago in a business venture and connected on a level that many won't understand.Sandra is a gift. She has the greatest gift of mercy and compassion. Her upbringing as the oldest child and preacher's kid laid the foundation of her commitment to her family. Sandra and Greg's eldest son, Zack was diagnosed with Deutschen Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 10. Sandra and Greg continued to take care of both their boys, Zach and Josh while running a successful Graphic Design and Photography business. Greg Newman, Sandra's husband of 31 years was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. Greg was promoted to Heaven and on November 24,2021; Zach, 34 joined his dad.Sandra has been referred to as a caretaker. She will agree with that title - but will add that she was the one learning from those that she took care of. She is full of gratitude with a life she didn't plan. Sandra talks about her trust issues and that the experience of living, loving and taking care of her guys brings her to the ultimate trust in God. Sandra is working on her story. She advocates for caregivers "support them by being supportive". One dream is Eden's Wellspring - a group home for young adults over the age of 18, who are physical disabled. Eden's Wellspring will be a home for those to find their home outside of their parents.Sandra's advice "don't quit".I will never quit on you friend. It's an honor to know you. May those that listen add more compassion and mercy to their story. This show is about you - the listener and how you perceive the experiences you have. I am excited for you to get involved and share your story. Thanks for listening. If you enjoyed this podcast, the best compliment is a referral. Share with others and write us a review.
