Fools Fest is KCSU's annual punk festival, always set to happen around April Fools Day! Every year, KCSU gathers local punk and punk-adjacent bands to play on Colorado State University's campus, creating a unique and exciting event for all to enjoy. KCSU's music directors, Mia Templien and Ria Janapati, had the opportunity to sit down with a few of the bands performing for some in-depth interviews.Plastic Forearm started in the middle of a record store in Orlando, Florida; Boone "Mud" Gonzales found R Cooper Long through the odd method of asking everyone in the store if they play music. Not long after, the pair opened Casey Taylor Brock's old band, and they all decided to stick together. Moving to Colorado on terms of fate, Plastic Forearm is a high-energy dynamic trio, or "a country band plumb gone wrong". They find inspiration in noise rock and free jazz, but also finds their variety from artists like Frankie Cosmos and The Dead Milkmen. Their debut album "Plastic Forearm Loves The Earth" is set to drop on April 25th, 2025, with their album release show on April 26th at the Swing Station in Laporte.

Steve Swart was on the bandstand and in college at CMU just in time to see owner Harvey Vanier turn The Foolery into Rubbles. Mt. Pleasant has always been at the dead center of the state of Michigan when it comes to cross-over touring due to WCMU and the college music market. One quick look north from Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Detroit and Lansing, all eyes hit the college town. The blended artistry from roots folk, to deep blues, power pop, metal, and first generation punk all huddled in this marketplace, long after the '60s Flint scene dispersed. Yes, you could see Texas blues man Gatemouth Brown, followed by funky rockin' Fishbone, and then a tour stop for the punk legends Dead Milkmen. Or how about Blues Brother Matt 'Guitar' Murphy? Verve Pipe? Etc...this was a Michigan hub town thanks to the venues, Theatres, and WCMU radio. While Swart notes that much remains in historical value, the word-of-mouth of the area's scene is more of a recollection and myth, than the hub it once was. North of Mt. Pleasant lies Interlochen, which seems to have taken on the persona that Mt. Pleasant used to be known for. A quick look at Traverse City, Petoskey, Alpena, or over west to Big Rapids or Grand Rapids, or even east to the Tri-Cities and you can see speckles of the majestic college town scene. Swart is taking the Mt. Pleasant music history seriously and is not only documenting it, but releasing lost shows on YouTube. Steve has compiled a fantastic episode that not only covers his music, but some of his rock/metal expeditions (magnetite)--which is not rock/metal like you think ;) Tune in and check this out too! "In these trying times" we're trying to have as much fun as we can before the whole thing goes up in flames. Of course we all feel a little paranoid in these weirdo days. The question is how to cope. We here at ATTT HQ are always thinking musically, as a 'for real' cure wherever possible. The cure for paranoia is to laugh at it, it's to get it all out there and sing about it. Any ounce of fun you can get out of it, you should do it. It's in this spirit that we've brought in a certified paranoia expert, the Unkillable Jenny Lynne! Jenny is here to help get them paranoias outta here, with music! PIcks 10-6 of the definitive list of paranoid songs are featured in Part 1.All hail the beloved Patreon people! Kinky Friedman, the singer, songwriter, humorist and sometime politician who with his band, the Texas Jewboys, developed an ardent following among alt-country music fans with songs like “They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore” — and whose biting cultural commentary earned him comparisons with Will Rogers and Mark Twain — died on Thursday at his ranch near Austin, Texas. He was 79.The writer Larry Sloman, a close friend, said the cause was complications of Parkinson's disease.Mr. Friedman occupied a singular spot on the fringes of American popular culture, alongside acts like Jello Biafra, the Dead Milkmen and Mojo Nixon. He leered back at the mainstream with songs that blended vaudeville, outlaw country and hokum, a bawdy style of novelty music typified by tracks like “Asshole From El Paso” and “We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You.”He toured widely in the 1970s, with his band and solo, including on the second leg of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue in 1976. He performed on “Saturday Night Live” and at the Grand Ole Opry — Mr. Friedman claimed to be the first Jewish musician to do so (though in fact others, including the fiddler Gene Lowinger, had beat him to it).Another performance, recorded for the TV show “Austin City Limits,” was reported to be so profane that it has never been aired. In the 1980s, after the band broke up, Mr. Friedman turned to writing detective novels, using the same casual irreverence that he brought to the stage in books like “Kill Two Birds and Get Stoned” (2001) and “God Bless John Wayne” (1995)Yet there was a surprising earnestness behind his weirdness. Mr. Friedman founded a ranch for rescue animals. He and his sister, Marcie, ran Echo Hill Camp, which they inherited from their parents and which they offered, free of charge, to children of parents killed while serving in the U.S. military. He spent an increasing amount of time on his ranch. The Echo Hill camp closed in 2013, but three years ago, he and his sister revived it, this time with a focus on helping the children of fallen service members as well as the children of refugee families from Afghanistan.“There was a volunteer who fixed a water heater who I went over to thank,” he told Texas Highways magazine in 2023. “He said, ‘You're welcome. I'm doing it for Jesus.' I told him, ‘I'm doing it for Moses.'”Clay RisenNew York Times

The release of Furiosa over the weekend got us all fixated on Mad Max again, so we're starting off this week's show with a look at five desert-drivin', raider-fightin', wasteland-survivin' games that owe their existence to George Miller's legendary film franchise. Then we'll get into The Rogue Prince of Persia, MultiVersus' official launch, the Just Cause movie announcement, and the digital games you wish you'd bought physically (or vice versa). Question of the Week: What is your favorite movie that has inspired videogame tropes? Break song is Bitchin' Camaro by The Dead Milkmen. Vidjagame Apocalypse theme by Matthew Joseph Payne.
Finally, something good comes of enabling: enable your garage to do more gearhead things (and stuff)! Just Mark, Just Caleb and Justin sit down amongst the Porsches at the new AutoVos (Caleb bought out EAS and went independent) for an hour of making garages better. Stop polishing the door handles and think bigger: (tasteful) additions of more floor and door, coating and levelling those floors, getting more work underway with ramps and stools, expanding the tools available with better boxes, plus seasonal enhancement with heating and drainage, and while we're thinking big, how about building up with a second story and a bridge to the house? There's so much more: a semi drag races a Rav4, Ruger makes a nice .22, the Dutchese sell a pricey Stryker, Great Divide, Big Sky, Cerviceria and Trinity brew fine beers, catwalks make a handy way to repel the hipster hordes, plus Man or Astroman, Galactic, Pantera, Dead Milkmen, Fugazi, Truckfighters and Five Horse Johnson.

Attention all Punk Rock Girls and Dead Milkmen (youngsters— it's a band)! Settle in with the fantastic author and podcaster Mur Lafferty (Chaos Terminal, I Should Be Writing) for a chat with JV covering sci-fi storytelling, zero dating, and the icing-est part of a cake!
I'm doing everything I can to try not to convince you not to listen. Unless you like The Dead Milkmen. You don't have to listen. This is what we do. It's what we've done since the beginning. It's out of control. We don't write it, we do it live. F*cking thing sucks. So anyway- Welcome to "At Five in the Afternoon". Yeah, of course KM has prepared a handful of topics, but it's still a sh*tshow. Don't worry, the poetry is better than ever. "Exquisite" according to J. Andrews. Even DJ Colorado gets in on the reading action! It is a literary podcast, after all. Strap in, folks. You bought the ticket, now take the ride...

Folks! There are some big goings-on in the ATTT universe these days. Thankfully we get by with a little help from people like our friend Joe Lavelle, who has graciously volunteered to help bring back a format we haven't used in a while but are excited to dust off for your listening pleasure. As we all know, the best podcasts never prepare anything and just wing it. Well in a roundabout way that's what we're up to around here. Emergency Pod turns All Time Top Ten into a "Who's Line Is It Anyway"-style improv game where instead of "yes and", our phrase is "check out this amazing song that I just pulled out of thin air". Joe Lavelle has some improv experience so he's the perfect guest to help us bring the concept back, and we promise to keep Emergency Pod going with monthly bonus episodes on Patreon.Patreon is back! We're cooking up monthly installments of Emergency Pod exclusively for our Patreon People. $5 a month gets you full access!https://www.patreon.com/alltimetoptenCheck out the Spotify playlist for this episode and see if you can make it make sense:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7lRsjz0FUMiwpafvmh02rm?si=82aecd01262a4867Thanks to all who have joined the ATTT Podcast Music Chat over on Facebook Groups. Super excited to announce new guest, Mighty Joe Castro, to The Story!Based out of Philadelphia, PA, Ameripolitan rockabilly outfit, Mighty Joe Castro & The Gravamen is the latest musical project from accomplished collage artist and musician Mighty Joe Castro (ex-The Situation, The Lift Up). Influenced by 50's Rock and Roll and infused with post modern Easter eggs cribbed from old episodes of MTV's 120 Minutes, Mighty Joe Castro takes a modern, lyric driven approach to songwriting while The Gravamen layer on Jesus and Mary Chain-cover-Link Wray guitar atmosphere, booming doghouse bass and swinging beats. The quartet lurks at a crossroads where Sun Records and Creation Records meet.According to Joe Castro: “Our goal is to play original rock-n-roll, in the style of the pioneers, but update it lyrically and sonically. Take what we've learned, everything great that's come after and go apply it to that original sound. What if Buddy Holly had access to a stack of effects pedals and some Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds records? That's the ethos of the band.”Currently working on a new full length record, the band released the single Embers in the Ash in 2023. It's the first follow up to their 2020 debut full length album, Come On Angels. Both were recorded at Miner Street Recordings and produced by Brian McTear (Sharon Van Etten, Dr Dog, Dead Milkmen). Previously, they released their debut EP, Wake Up, You're Rockin'! in 2018.You can find Mighty Joe Castro and his projects here:Website: https://linktr.ee/MightyJoeCastroandtheGravamenFind The Story Podcast here: coryrosenproductions.com/podcastsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-story/donations

Jon Wurster started playing drums in Superchunk in the early 90s. He currently plays drums in The Mountain Goats and with Bob Mould. He also famously played the character Ronald Thomas Clontle on The Best Show with Tom Scharpling and declared that Madness invented ska! And Jon certainly jokes around about ska a lot, but when he was a teenager, he really loved the 2 Tone ska bands like The Specials and English Beat. He was also a big fan of The Hooters during their early 80s ska phase. And more recently, Jon skanked and played tambourine on stage during the infamous Ska No Children incident. (Sad Snack opened for The Mountain Goats in San Francisco and played their ska cover of "No Children.") We bring Jon on today to talk about ska. He tells us that he used to practice drums to the Dance Craze soundtrack. We talk about his connection to the band Dead Milkmen. (Amongst other things, he booked their first show!) We discuss his nickname Johnny Earthshoe and we talk about two key shows he attended with The Police. (The Specials and Rhoda Dakar were at one of them) He also tells us about missing his high school prom for The Meatmen, Ska band The Pressure Boys' connection to Superchunk, and we try to figure out the name of the ska artist that was featured on a DVD he owns (It turns out it was King Django) Support the show
In this episode, vocalist and guitarist Joe Jack Talcum provides an engaging look into the creation of the timeless classic from The Dead Milkmen, "Punk Rock Girl". He shares the story of how so many iconic Philadelphia landmarks became part of the song's lyrics, all of which immerse the listener in the city's unique atmosphere. He also reveals how Minnie Pearl and Mojo Nixon made their way into this punk rock gem, making this a must-listen for Dead Milkmen fans and music enthusiasts alike. The Dead Milkmen were odd ducks in Philadelphia's 1980s hardcore scene. They played really fast, but with a clean guitar channel, and wrote satirical--often strange and very imaginative--lyrics. It felt like they were almost a ska band. And in fact, they did have a few ska songs in their set like "If You Love Somebody, Set Them On Fire," "Little Man In My Head," "Gorilla Girl," and a cover of The Specials' "A Message To You, Rudy." Today, we bring on Dead Milkmen guitarist Joe Genaro. We talk about the band's relationship to ska, Joe's love for The Specials, The English Beat, Philly locals The Hooters, Operation Ivy and what it was like to play a LIVE 105 radio event with Skankin' Pickle (Along with Duran Duran and Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine.) We discuss their recent cover of Heaven 17's "(We Don't Need No) Fascist Groove Thang," which they turned into a ska song, the influential role of Dead Kennedys' In God We Trust, Inc, Joe's love for Dr. Demento and Weird Al (And how excited he was when he heard himself played on the Dr. Demento show), Why they mentioned drummer Jon Wurster in the song "Stewart," and we breakdown the recording of Big Lizard In My Backyard, and discuss some of the weirder promotional events Dead Milkmen did when "Punk Rock Girl" broke, including a bonkers performance on Club MTV with Downtown Julie Brown. Plus we discuss the band's excellent new album, Quaker City Quiet Pills, which was released on June 9th. Support the show

Philadelphia's Dead Milkmen hold a special place in American punk rock. Relying heavily on absurdist humour rather than ferocity, the band found a place in the hearts of many with underground hits like "Punk Rock Girl" and "Bitchin' Camaro". Eventually the band slowed way down and the guys went back to "normal" with the occasional reunion show, but as frontman Rodney Anonymous shows us, that caustic sense of rebellion has never left. Here Rodney tells us the band's story, his feelings on performing, the music he's into, and where they go from here. Don't remember the last time I laughed this hard.
