Sam Stewart of Flagman returns to discuss Filipino Ray, an acrobatic bass jaunt that comprises the penultimate track of Of Whales and Woe. The bass lines go hard, but there is a lot of open space as well, which can be tricky for many musicians. Sam helps us with those intricacies, and regales with his own tales of whales and woe around procuting and hearing this record for the first time. We also share what we know about Ray Wing, the lyrical subject of the song, who Les played with in the Tommy Crank Band in the 1980s. Plus, can we borrow your old iPod cable? Thanks. “The live music space is on fire,” says J.W. Roth, CEO & Chairman of Venu Holding (VENU). “We're seeing demand just as high in our smaller venues as in our bigger.” He talks about building new venues and how he's not worried about a post-Taylor Swift effect dampening ticket sales. “We're building about $1.2 billion dollars' worth right now.” He describes how Venu finances these projects with a page out of the condo book, selling “fractional ownership” to business partners. He also talks about how Venu affects the economies of the communities it builds in.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Crystal Orderson is joined by singer and performer Jamie Jupiter for a conversation about Sin and Salvation: The Story of Johnny Cash, a riveting theatrical production returning to Café Roux in Noordhoek after a sold-out, standing-ovation debut. More than just a tribute show, this performance delves into the raw, redemptive story of the legendary “Man in Black”—his music, demons, compassion, and legacy. Jamie, who plays Cash, reflects on the powerful themes of sin, salvation, and resilience that echo through the show, just in time for Father’s Day. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. The hips of the record have arrived! This utterly accessible, catchy track doubles as a slice-of-life study of a commercial fisherman, whose solace is the sea, despite its diminishing economic returns. We weigh how officially unofficial this track stands as a Fisherman's Chronicle, and and explain why it's the most-performed track from the record, although that's fairly clear to aficionados. I'm excited to welcome back Oliver Wood of The Wood Brothers as he makes his return to Roadcase for this week's episode. Oliver is an extraordinary artist with killer guitar chops and a mellow and intentional vibe that, dare I say, exudes Zen-like qualities. We talk about his life in music, songwriting, and that elusive goal of being and staying “in the moment.” Improv is a big part of Oliver's art, both in the studio and in a live performance setting, and staying grounded and open to possibilities is at the heart of it. He claims that “the best art happens by accident,” and he talks to me about how that mindset drives his creative direction. The Wood Brothers have a new album coming out August 1, Puff of Smoke, and are touring all over the country through the summer. Oliver's second solo album, Fat Cat Silhouette, is out there now for your listening pleasure — it's a phenomenal work of musical art. The Wood Brothers are one of my favorites bands, and this is a really awesome conversation with Oliver!! The great Kello Gonzalez returns to the podcast on short notice to discuss Nothin' Ventured, which we interpret as our version of a Les Claypool motivational speech, particularly because the spirit of the song (bass solos) and lyrics (taking risks to achieve something) mirrors what LEs did with his career path. IT's also chock-full of cultural idioms amd a sneaky masturbation joke; everyone's favorite Claypoolism. Kello demonstrates the "five minute" interpretation of the bass line, and we dig into taking risks, the rewards, and why it matters. Find Kello on Youtube and Instagram. In this interview episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles interviews singer BB from BB & The Honey. BB is an American singer and songwriter who has been an integral part of the Chicago music scene for 20 years. Audiences say her voice is a blend of Brandy Carlisle, Janice Joplin, Patsy Klein, Stevie Nicks, and Amelda May. Her powerful interpretations range from blues, funk, soul, classic country to jazz, rockabilly, and classic rock. BB & the Honey have released a new EP of original songs called Reckless Heart, which is available on all major streaming platforms.BB reminisces about her first concert at age five, seeing Sean Cassidy at Navy Pier in Chicago, and shares memorable concert experiences with Mumford and Sons, contrasting them with a lackluster performance by Bob Dylan she attended in the early 90s. She discusses a formative experience in her music career when she and a friend were invited to join Arise Records after singing 'Amazing Grace' in a Chicago subway. This fortuitous event laid the groundwork for BB's extensive music journey, performing with various bands and writing a wide range of musical genres from blues, funk, soul, classic country, to jazz and rock. The episode also dives into BB's musical projects, from her early involvement with hip hop group Schmoov and the Family to later bands like Super D, The Jesters, and Seeking Wonderland. BB elaborates on how she transitioned into learning the piano during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed her to contribute more dynamically to her current band. BB & The Honey recently released a new EP called 'Reckless Heart,' comprising four original songs. The interview touches on the practicalities of their live performances, noting the flexibility in band size depending on the venue. BB delves into the recording process of the EP, aiming to capture the live energy of their performances. The episode wraps up with BB talking about their upcoming release party, their ongoing music journey, and where fans can find their music and live performance updates.BANDS: BB & the Honey, Bob Dylan, C&C Music Factory, Chicago, Full Moon Vixen, Groove X, Kris Kross, Lucinda Williams, Modern Day Romeos, Mumford and Sons, Poi Dog Pondering, Santana, Sean Cassidy, Seeking Wonderland, Stock Boy, Super D, The Dead, The Jesters, ZZ TopVENUES: Abbey Pub, Alpine Valley, Bacon Fest, beer fest in Kenosha, Baker House, Crystal Lake, Dole Mansion, Double Door, Goose Island, Hard Rock Cafe, Lake Como, Lou's Lounge, Mars Resort, Naperville, Navy Pier, Riviera, Riviera in Chicago, Ryman, Ryman Theater, Ryman Theatre, Sean Cassidy concert, Subterranean, Tinley Park, Walworth County Fair PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708

Les Claypool's ode to his wife, Chaney, starts side two of Of Whales and Woe, and there's certainly no woe to be found in this joyous track, which reflects the irrational emotional highs of fulfilled love, through the Claypool lens. Josh, a native Iowan, sheds some light on the lyrical references and discusses agricultural exports, because that's all Iowans talk about aside from the weather. We also play an excerpt from Les's book tour in Iowa City. Kristin Hersh of THROWING MUSES joins Rain Phoenix on LaunchLeft for a raw, unfiltered conversation about artistic integrity and the music industry's dark underbelly. Kristin reflects on her journey in the music industry, discussing her experiences with major labels and her commitment to making music that feels true to her. She shares insights into her creative process, including her approach to songwriting and production. The conversation touches on themes of authenticity, the spiritual aspects of music, and the challenges of maintaining artistic vision in a commercial industry. Kristin Hersh then launches Wallace False, who offers his unique perspective on creating original music and art. The episode provides a fascinating look into two generations of musicians who prioritize creative expression over commercial success, offering listeners a glimpse into the world of independent and experimental music-making. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) Intro: Kristin Hersh joins LaunchLeft podcast (05:58) The music industry's focus on image over art (13:18) Spirituality and channeling in music creation (19:39) Exploring unconventional sounds and instruments (25:49) Leaving major labels to pursue artistic vision (32:28) Kristin on producing her own music and incorporating nature sounds (38:32) Streaming's impact on musical exploration (48:50) Wallace False is launched (53:54) Creating original sounds from basic waveforms (59:18) Finding inspiration beyond audience expectations (60:00) Wallace False's new industrial soundscape album: Signal KEY TAKEAWAYS: Kristin has always prioritized authenticity in her music, choosing to leave major labels to maintain artistic integrity and her creative process. She believes that music is about capturing a visceral truth, not conforming to industry standards of prettiness or marketability. It's about nurturing the energetic essence of a song and letting it resonate with listeners who appreciate its rawness. Kristin strives for originality and control through her creative process. By manipulating raw sounds to craft unique compositions and avoiding conventional influences, she aims to create something entirely its own. It's important not to become complacent in any artistic lane, but to explore and experiment, allowing inspiration to guide the way. Music has a spiritual component that goes beyond just sound. It's about being a vessel for inspiration, channeling something greater than oneself. Kristin and Wyatt create music that resonates with truth, rejecting superficial standards and focusing on the deeper connection it can foster with those who truly listen. The Queen of Grunge's first band, Throwing Muses, began recording and playing out when they were just 14 years old and they're still going. 2020's critically acclaimed Sun Racket was hailed as a "perfect record." Hersh's refusal to participate in a corporate industry saw her leave a Warner Brothers recording contract at the top of her success in order to become listener-supported. "Music is humanist and so are we," as she puts it. Wildly prolific, she has released more than 20 albums - solo, with Throwing Muses, and her noise rock band 50 Foot Wave ("A group that runs laps around most rock bands" said Pitchfork, on 2022's Black Pearl). She's also a celebrated author: Rolling Stone named her first book, Rat Girl (Penguin) one of the ten best rock memoirs of all time. NPR said of her second book, Don't Suck, Don't Die, "Not only one of the best books of the year, but one of the most beautiful rock memoirs ever written." Her third book, the game-changing Seeing Sideways, pushes the envelope of creative non-fiction while telling the story of raising her 4 sons on a tour bus. Hersh lives in New Orleans and New England. WALLACE FALSE: Wyatt True, sometimes known as Wallace False, is a writer, animator, and musician. True was born in Rhode Island and raised just about everywhere else. He now resides in the Deep South. The common thread in True's work is a grotesque dismantling of any and all familiar structures. Guitars twang sour, sorrowful sonatas, protagonists are lost amongst melting walls and rooms that time forgot. He is mostly docile and will only bite if cornered. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I talk again with my musical brother, the amazing Tim Hamilton. Tim's had such a rich and fascinating career that we absolutely needed to talk again. If you haven't heard the first interview with him, I encourage you to go back and listen. In this follow-up, Tim shares what life's been like recently, including the highs and challenges of a packed summer gig schedule. We dig into the evolution of country music, especially the return of more traditional sounds in the '90s, and Tim reflects on how crucial it is for a musician to have a signature sound. We also talk about his time playing in the house band at Cowboys in Kennesaw, Georgia—some great stories there—along with the memorable artists he worked with and the curveballs that come with live shows. From starstruck moments to behind-the-scenes stories about the camaraderie among musicians, Tim brings warmth, wisdom, and a lot of heart. We also reflect on the lessons we've learned from seasoned players, the changes in the Nashville scene, and just how much community and connection shape our lives in music.I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed catching up with Tim. This one's packed with stories, insights, and plenty of laughs.Thank you for listening!
