HEAVY Music Interviews

Get ready to snap your necks, Australia, because New Zealand black-thrash titans Bulletbelt are crossing the ditch this June to tear you all a new one.The Wellington metal veterans are locked and loaded for the highly anticipated resurrection of Dead of Winter Festival. Taking place on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at its brand-new stomping ground the Mansfield Tavern, this iconic alternative counter-culture gathering is officially back after a multi-year hiatus. While Aussie heavyweights like DZ Deathrays and Mammal are ready to hold down the home front, Bulletbelt represents the absolute pinnacle of relentless, sonic savagery coming from across the Tasman. If you have ever witnessed Bulletbelt live, you know they do not just play music; they deliver a sonic assault that leaves your ears ringing and your feet bruised. Their signature blend of old-school thrash velocity and cold, uncompromising black metal atmospheric filth creates a hellish wall of sound. It is the kind of measured aggression that instantly gets your head snapping. For years, these guys have carved out a reputation as one of the hardest-working, most road-hardened extreme metal forces in the Southern Hemisphere.Dead of Winter has always been a sanctuary for the outsiders, the riff-lords, and the beautiful weirdos of the heavy music community. Moving the madness to the legendary Mansfield Tavern means 34 acts will split your skull across multiple stages. It offers the perfect, high-intensity indoor environment for Bulletbelt to do what they do best: decimate crowds. Expect sweat-soaked leather, full-throttle blast beats, and a wave of pure, unadulterated energy that hits with the subtle force of a flying brick.HEAVY caught up with drummer Steve Francis to find out more. With Dead Of Winter returning after a number of years, we ask Steve just how important festivals that nurture homegrown talent are to the continued growth of Australian and New Zealand music."They're huge," he replied instantly. "And look at Australia. Look at how many amazing heavy bands there are at the moment, and a little bit of a parallel to back here in Wellington. I think the local scene at the moment here in Wellington and the bigger New Zealand is probably better than it's ever been. There's so many bands that are getting overseas and getting signed to international labels and coming over to play Brisbane with such a really cool, diverse lineup as well.We came two years ago and played Necrosonic Festival, and that was catered a little bit more to the heavier side of the rock genre. But this one is really exciting because we're going to be presenting ourselves in front of a bunch of people who aren't just into heavy music, they're into all sorts of rock-oriented music. So, yeah, really excited."In the full interview, Steve reported that Bulletbelt has been off the road since a November 2024 15th‑anniversary show while recording a new album, which is finished and produced by U.S. producer Damien Reynard to achieve a “world‑class” sound. The record emphasizes more melody, higher tempos (including songs near 200 BPM) and power‑metal influences, and is planned for release around October; release timing is partly delayed by the postponed film Deathgasm 2, for which Bulletbelt wrote the theme.Steve characterized the band's festival approach as high‑energy, crowd‑engaging “party band” sets and said festivals are crucial for reaching broader rock audiences beyond heavy‑music niches. He confirmed the band will perform two new songs during the Australian shows and named local bands he's anticipating at Dead of Winter and more.Dead Of Winter will be held at the Mansfield Tavern in Brisbane on June 27, featuring Mammal, DZ Deathrays, Jay and Lindsay, Beanflipper, Toe to Toe, Slim Krusty and many more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. BANDS: Adele, B-52s, Beastie Boys, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Black Sabbath, Chicago, Combustible Edison, Devo, Earth Wind & Fire, Fishbone, Foo Fighters, GWAR, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Love Jones, Metallica, Metric, Molly Hatchet, Morphine, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Sea and Cake, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Ted Nugent, The Cars, The Cocktails, Tool, Tortoise, Van Halen, ZZ Top. Your easy weekly guide to the music biz and how it all works. This week: two very special guests talk about how to actually make important change happen in the UK's live industry at grassroots level, and improve the live music fan's experience: we welcome back Lord Kevin Brennan of Canton, Labour member of the House of Lords and a recording musician himself. We also speak to Shain Shapiro, who amongst other things is author of This Must Be The Place: How Music Can Make Your City Better. (They are both speaking about this on 10th June at the Music Cities Convention in Hull, FYI.)** As ever, our Patreon Superfans get the full interviews – with 50% extra conversation! Become a Superfan of the podcast for free – and enjoy the exclusive weekly Lock-in bonus section! **We talk about the important stuff that fans care about: surge ticket pricing, local grassroots venues, music fan associations and more – and it's all built on the results of the UK's Fan–led Review of Live and Electronic Music, the House of Commons committee special report that Lord Brennan oversaw. He explains what he learned and what can – and should – be done next. Then Shain explains why live music must be treated as a "vital public good" – i.e. just like libraries or the NHS – and how people like you can build real political heft, in order to save their struggling local spaces. Lord Brennan reflects on his past work with the Music Streaming Inquiry, examining how parliamentary reports can ripple out to create real-world impact for creators, even when they don't instantly become law.Essential learnings from the live fans' report: From transport and safety to fair ticketing, Lord Brennan boils down the core pillars that everyday music lovers actually care about. The surge pricing backlash: The data doesn't lie – fans are united in their hatred of dynamic ticket surging. We discuss the urgent need for primary market transparency and why standard "free-market" arguments don't apply to the emotional experience of a gig.Shain Shapiro breaks down how society has prioritised the passive consumption of music (the noun) while deprioritising community participation (the verb), leading to the isolation of modern music fans. Why you should know your ward councillor. Shain outlines how forming local "Music Fan Associations" can force local councils to unlock underutilised property and rethink how spaces are used. The 24-Hour Dictators: Both guests flex their imaginary emergency powers to fix the ecosystem, including slashing VAT on tickets, restructuring property business rates, and mandating grassroots funding. As ever, we welcome your feedback, emails and – in particular – any questions you might have about how the music biz works!Email us: thepriceofmusicpodcast@gmail.comSee you next week!Stuart and Joe======TPOM online: http://tpom.uk/Support The Price of Music on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusicFollow Stuart on X - @stuartdredgeFollow The Price of Music on X - @PriceofMusicpodFor sponsorship opportunities, please email - joe@musically.com

On our The Price of Music Podcast, we had two very special guests talk about how to actually make important change happen in the UK's live industry at grassroots level, and improve the live music fan's experience: Lord Kevin Brennan of Canton, Labour member of the House of Lords – and a recording musician himself. As ever, we welcome your feedback, emails and – in particular – any questions you might have about how the music biz works!Email us: thepriceofmusicpodcast@gmail.comStuart and Joe======TPOM online: http://tpom.uk/Support The Price of Music on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusicFollow Stuart on X - @stuartdredgeFollow The Price of Music on X - @PriceofMusicpodFor sponsorship opportunities, please email - joe@musically.com

Interview by Kris PetersAustralia's hardest working rock outfit Airbourne are the official supporting act for Guns N' Roses across the Australia and New Zealand leg of their World Tour. This high-voltage stadium tour pairs two generations of fierce rock icons.Hailing from Warrnambool, Victoria, Airbourne was formed by brothers Joel and Ryan O'Keeffe and are a seamless fit for the legendary Los Angeles band. Airbourne has spent decades carrying the torch for raw, traditional Australian hard rock. Their straight-ahead rock 'n' roll style is heavily reminiscent of pub-rock pioneers like AC/DC, slotting comfortably alongside Guns N' Roses' multi-platinum, stadium-sized catalogue. The stadium series of shows brings out the principal star power of Guns N' Roses, with original members Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan completely committed to the line-up, promising a blending of classic anthems like Sweet Child O' Mine and Welcome to the Jungle, mixed with fresh, contrasting modern tracks Atlas and Nothin'.Airbourne acts as the perfect match to ignite the stadium environment. Frontman Joel O'Keeffe is legendary for his reckless live antics, which include climbing high stage scaffolding and tearing through blazing guitar solos. Criminally more popular overseas than in their own back yard, this upcoming tour will hopefully help Airbourne gain wider acceptance where it matters. At home.HEAVY caught up with Joel to talk about the tour and the excitement of sharing the stage with Guns 'N Roses."We're coming back to tour Australia!" he enthused, "And we are very excited because one of our favorite bands of all time - Guns N' Roses - has decided to take us with them! So we're going all around Australia and it's gonna be a blast. In the world that we live in today you've got everyone attached to their phones, or you got to go to work tomorrow. We're always thinking about the future; thinking about the past, chained to this; chained to that. This is the opportunity to literally live right in the present and rock and just be purely free. No phone. No job. Nothing but beers and Guns 'N Roses. What gets better than that?"In the full interview, Joel talked more about the upcoming tour and what it means to Airbourne to be playing. He described role as openers and the expectations on the band, as well as the potential for learning by watching one of the worlds best in action. We talked about Airbourne's live show and what to expect, including his own high energy performances. Airbourne's recently released new single was spoken about, as was their upcoming album and what to expect. Joel went deeper into how the album respects the life and legacy of Lemmy Kilmeister and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Calm Amidst The Chaos With GREG KUBACKI From CAR BOMB

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersLet's be honest for a second. When you hear that Karnivool is touring, your ears instantly prick up. They are the undisputed kings of Australian progressive rock, a band that makes complexity sound like second nature. But when the tour announcement dropped, the words Car Bomb and TesseracT were slapped on the bill alongside them, things suddenly took an even bigger turn for the better. This isn't just a concert line-up; it's an absolute musical assault on the senses.HEAVY has always loved music that challenges you—the kind of tracks that don't just sit in the background but grab you by the throat and force you to pay attention. That is exactly what this tour is going to do. If Karnivool is the masterclass in sonic atmosphere, deep groove, and sweeping, emotional melodies, then Car Bomb is the chaotic entity sent to tear the room to pieces before the headliners even touch the stage. For the uninitiated, Car Bomb doesn't just play metal; they weaponise time signatures. Their style is a dizzying, frantic, and claustrophobic mathcore that feels like a glitching supercomputer trying to punch its way out of your speakers. Pairing their jagged, laser-guided ferocity with Karnivool's lush, towering soundscapes and the wizardry of TesseracT is a stroke of absolute genius. It's a beautiful contrast between absolute, calculated chaos and pristine, progressive beauty.HEAVY sat down with Car Bomb's guitarist Greg Kubacki to find out more. One of the topics of discussion is how Car Bomb find the balance between styles and genres in the creative process."I do the majority of the writing these days," Greg replied. "Back in the day, it was all of us working together in a room, but now we all have responsibilities, so I do the majority of the stuff. When the song starts, I start with an idea and put it on the shelf for a month or two and come back to it and see if I like it. And if I like something - whether it's technical or it's knuckle-dragging, really simple stuff - I'll just start working on a song from there. When I run out of ideas, that's when I usually know a song's done. Or if I put the song again on the shelf for another month and listen to it, and I don't find anything wrong with it, then I'm like, okay, it's good. But usually we have so many ideas that we're always working on. It's not like the movie Amadeus, where we're just writing it out, and it's written in five minutes (laughs)."In the full interview, Greg explains why it has taken Car Bomb so long to make it to Australia, how he prepares to tour a country for the first time and what they are expecting. He talked about the live show and what to expect, including what three songs people going to the show should listen to in order to get to know the band and music more.Greg ran us through difficulties in transforming the musical complexities into the live arena, as well as finding the balance between styles in the creative process. We spoke about the early days of Car bomb and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, the first time he heard one of his own songs on the radio and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

What happens when the life you've devoted yourself to begins to shift and you're left wondering who you are now?In this deeply grounding and inspiring episode #214 of the Self Care Goddess Podcast, we explore how to rewrite the story of your life in midlife not from loss, but from possibility. Our guest, Carolyn Flynn, memoirist, novelist, TEDx speaker, and founder of The Story Catalyst - shares profound insights on identity, emotional agility, menopause as a “second spring,” and the courage it takes to imagine a new chapter after caregiving, motherhood, and major life transitions. This conversation is a reminder that midlife is not an ending, it's a powerful threshold. In this episode, we explore:✅ Why “empty nest” can be a doorway, not a loss✅ Emotional agility vs. emotional rigidity and how curiosity keeps us alive✅ Menopause and midlife as a season of wisdom, energy, and reinvention✅ How meditation and mindfulness create space between stimulus and response✅ Letting go of outdated cultural narratives about women and aging✅ Becoming a “tourist” in your own life and why getting lost matters✅ Self-care as a way of being, not a reward or indulgenceThe episode opens with a short, heart-coherence meditation to help you arrive fully - body, mind, and breath, before we dive into this soulful, expansive dialogue.Whether you're navigating midlife, questioning old identities, or sensing that there's more waiting for you, this episode offers both reassurance and permission.

What happens when you mix the traditional storytelling of classic country with the raw, uncompromising distortion of 90s alternative rock? You get the spellbinding sound of Melbourne singer-songwriter Katie Bates. Fresh off the release of her brilliant new single "Tunnel Vision," Katie joins Jamie on the show for an intimate, deep-dive exploration of her musical DNA, the fierce grit of the Australian music scene, and what it truly means to defend your artistic identity in a fast-moving digital age. In this episode, we go far beyond the standard press junket to break down the mechanics of Katie's unique sonic friction. Raised on a steady diet of family vinyl, Katie opens up about how a childhood obsession with The Wizard of Oz unexpectedly handed her a guitar at just six years old, setting her on a path to cut her teeth in local Melbourne bars and live music clubs long before most kids her age had even finished school. Jamie and Katie dive headfirst into the fascinating philosophy behind her records, discussing why she intentionally pairs clear, soaring country vocals with the snarling, heavy production elements of grunge titans like Nirvana and PJ Harvey. They tackle the psychology of dynamic contrasts in songwriting, the unique perspective gained from stepping out of the spotlight to work as a live sidewoman for other prominent acts, and her unfiltered thoughts on the frustration of navigating today's single-driven streaming ecosystem when your heart belongs to the timeless architecture of a full-length album. Turn it up, lean in, and join us for a masterclass in independent artistry.

James actually used to be a full-time member of the band... back in 2007, he was the second drummer to play with us following Brian Vogel, about two years before we met Mike McAloon. James also has a long history playing with Moses Guest, a legendary Houston band we were honored to share the bill with at GUEST FEST II last week (Chad also built and manages mosesguest.com). We had our first rehearsal with Jimbo yesterday, and took a break to record this episode, reminiscing about the early days of Jimbo's original tenure with Blaggards, his history with music leading up to that, plus a few other silly things. At the end is a bit of our rehearsal with James, cut with a montage of photos from the old days with James, playing at Fitzgerald's and the Continental Club. S04.E09 - From Page to Stage: Mike Bernard Discusses His Book 'Concert Dates'

Seeing Them Live

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2026 33:31

In this episode, Charles sits down with Mike Bernard, a Boston-area author, screenwriter, and playwright who came to writing later in life and hasn't slowed down since. Mike has published eight novels, written a stage musical, and optioned multiple screenplays through prestigious competitions including the Academy Nicholl Fellowship, the Page International Screenwriting Awards, ScreenCraft, and the Nantucket Film Festival. The conversation weaves together music, memory, friendship, and the creative life — all anchored in the gritty, soulful sounds of the 1970s and early '80s. Mike's live music journey begins with a memorable — if reluctant — first show: escorting his grandmother to see Liberace at the Cape Cod Melody Tent. His real musical awakening came when he saw the J. Geils Band at the old Boston Garden as a teenager, an experience he still counts among his best. The blues-driven energy of "House Party" and "Musta Got Lost" made a lifelong impression, and he draws a sharp distinction between that era of J. Geils and the MTV-era band that followed. Other standout shows include Elvis Costello at the Cape Cod Coliseum — where the opening silhouettes under blue light during "Watching the Detectives" hit him like a gut punch — and an extraordinary 1990 benefit concert at Worcester's Clark University featuring Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit, Bob Seger, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and Jimmy Buffett all on the same bill. And for pure comedic gold, Mike recounts the moment a Little River Band guitar pick landed — and stuck — to his bare thigh at the Melody Tent, with zero competition from the crowd for the souvenir. Charles and Mike then discuss Mike's book Concert Dates; a fictional story told in interview form — inspired by Daisy Jones & The Six — that follows six friends who meet at a concert at age 15 and are reunited decades later through a video diary. The backdrop is the Cape Cod Coliseum, a converted hockey rink that hosted an extraordinary run of classic rock shows from 1972 to 1983, including Van Halen, The Clash, Talking Heads, Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and J. Geils (twelve times). Mike also shares the remarkable story of connecting with photographer Rudy Childs — a previous Seeing Them Live guest — through a Facebook group dedicated to the Coliseum, only to discover that Rudy's candid parking lot photos included a picture of Mike and his own friends from a Clash show. Listeners who enjoy music, nostalgia, and deeply human storytelling will find Concert Dates — and Mike's wider catalog, including Crossing the Sagamore — well worth picking up on Amazon. BANDS: Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Billy Joel, Bob Seger, Bon Iver, Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley, Eagles (Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit), Elvis Costello, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frankie Avalon, Huey Lewis and the News, J. Geils Band, Jackson Browne, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Buffett, Liberace, Little River Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Neil Young, Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Frampton, R.E.M., Ray Charles, Seals and Crofts, Sly & the Family Stone, Talking Heads, The Clash, The Four Tops, Tom Petty, Van Halen.
