This week on Semi-Pro Film Show, we're kicking off our “going postal” sweep with Joel Schumacher's Falling Down — the Michael Douglas movie that might be the best, most serious, and most unsettling entry in the whole lineup. We talk about why Falling Down still works, how the movie balances social commentary without feeling too heavy-handed, Michael Douglas as D-Fens, Robert Duvall's final-day-on-the-job cop storyline, the movie's mental health themes, defense contractor guilt, chaotic Los Angeles energy, and why this film feels like the blueprint for a whole genre of unhinged “one bad day” movies. Plus: Joel Schumacher, Batman & Robin, Postal, Crank, First Blood, Michael Douglas' hairline, and way too many “send this to someone…” jokes.Watch/listen as we break down Falling Down, the movie that asks: what happens when a man who is already unstable finally gets pushed too far?

It's a great time of the year. The leaves tumbling down in wind or rain, even in very cold conditions, tells us it's going to be winter soon. Some leaves are pretty sturdy on the lawn, others blow themselves to the old growing places for plants, flowers, fruits, and seeds. What now? Gather them up and put them in the weekly recycle bin? There are a few things we can do to make them useful for the garden: Collect a heap of these leaves and put them in a compost bin. Mix the leaves with twigs and woody debris, some old food scraps and dog poo. Literally anything that once lived can be composted and turned into next season's plant food – think N-P-K. Get a good depth (four inches or so) that you can scatter over the dormant pants. This will protect the plants during winter, and it will also keep the very cold ice-base away from the hibernating plant. Everything is then protected from tricky conditions. If you add some slow-release fertiliser as well, you'll literally increase the fertility of that patch of your garden. But the third one is my favourite: Get yourself a big plastic container (where you usually grow some large specimens with plenty of root space). Fill that container up with fallen-down leaves, and as you are filling it up, simply stand on the leaves (and small branches) and smack it into a nice compact layer of leaves. Then you turn the bin upside down and you end up with a perfect, compact tower of compressed leaves, ready for spring or next year autumn! The spring leaves would be great to keep the developing plants safe, warm, and surrounded by fertiliser. The year-old lot will be dry, light and the very best long-lasting winter cover for the coming months. My personal way to go even further is by chucking everything inside a sizeable rubbish bin (at least a meter tall), in which you can really go to town with massive amounts of fallen, dried leaves. They will suit soil improvement, great fertility, and easy-to-dry soil conditions. Just be careful stepping in and out of such a huge rubbish bin without breaking legs and necks… LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Devin & James are back in the DEN OF CIN with a tribute to actor/writer/director ROBERT DUVALL! Few other artists have had such a long lasting impact on the art form as Duvall, with parts in many of the most important movies ever made, in both supporting and lead roles. We start off with a list of the expected must-see classics, such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, M*A*S*H, and Network (to name just a few), but we deep dive into a selection of Duvall films that tend to get less attention in the modern era than the typical "greatest hits" of his filmography. We start with a look into his supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola's THE RAIN PEOPLE, and then dive into long form conversations about his many starring roles, including the criminally underseen THE OUTFIT, his Oscar winning country music masterpiece TENDER MERCIES, family drama THE GREAT SANTINI, Dennis Hopper's still controversial COLORS with Sean Penn, the self-written & directed THE APOSTLE, and the 21st century western OPEN RANGE. Along the way, we get into side conversations about THX-1138, TOMORROW, THE STONE BOY, FALLING DOWN, JOE KIDD, TRUE CONFESSIONS, and THE JUDGE, as well as probably the weirdest, most random cameo of all time in the remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Join us for all of these, and even a few more, as we celebrate over 60 years of cinema with Robert Duvall!

When I first discovered Nu Metal, I was 13. It was 1996, the world was different. Suddenly the aggressions of the early 1990's “Peace in the Middle East” campaign where schools would have you recite the pledge of allegiance every morning and then a prideful listen to a song by Lee Greenwood, “Proud to be an American”. What was there to be proud of? In that time there were riots in the streets where angry musicians looted and sang about it, where the police brutality raged on in the major metroplexes. When you look back at it, it really seems like something of a movie, from time period staples of the day like “Falling Down”, “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” in the overtly west coast scene along with other films based in a post apocalyptic Los Angeles in “Demolition Man” & “Judge Dredd”. However there were just as many cop revenge story films from New York and Miami as well, if it was a way to exploit it, it was to be done. The music that comes into play where people realized that the only warfare was class warfare. It's us vs. them… a manifesto where we can all get together and make a difference. The rage of the 1990's fallout of the Reagan Administration in the 1980's where people were promised that if they gave they would receive and they were to be recipients of a shit sandwich and a crashed pyramid scheme economy that still impacts us to this very day. The ruthless aggression was all over the news, things like “Inside Tonight”, “Hard Copy” and so much more where it exposed the dregs of humanity. Bands united and scenes mixed where bands would often mix elements of Rap, Hip-Hop, Electronica and more into the metal culture.Insert yourself at 13, where you often are coming of age to a sort (especially in the United States) and rage and angst is rampant and you just want to be understood, all we can do is to be better. "The English have Shakespeare, the French have Molière, and the Russians have Dostoyevsky. What do we own? What do we have? An actor regarded for his amazing versatility, immense range of performances, an actor who always strived for authenticity and realism. He could be big and theatrically booming but he could also be low-key and subtle. A terrific actor. He starred in many films. The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part 2, Network, Lonesome Dove, Tender Mercies, Jack Reacher, Days of Thunder, Falling Down, To Kill a Mockingbird, M*A*S*H and of course Apocalypse Now. One of the most dedicated and respected actors of his generation. We wanted to pay tribute to Duvall on this episode and hope we did a good job with that. Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. The Chauncey DeVega Show

This special episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show honors the life and legacy of Robert Duvall, who recently transitioned to the next plane of existence at the age of 95. Duvall's extraordinary career includes unforgettable performances in The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Tender Mercies.  His cult film classics include THX 1138, The Killer Elite, Colors, and Falling Down. Yet it was The Apostle — Duvall's passion project — that may stand as his most intimate and fearless work. In the film, he portrays Euliss F. "Sonny" Dewey, a Pentecostal preacher battling inner demons who, after committing murder, flees to Louisiana and reinvents himself as "The Apostle E.F.," and builds a multiracial church. Longtime listeners know the very special place "Bobby D" and The Apostle hold in the history of this show and in Chauncey's own life journey. For this celebration of life and remembrance, Chauncey is joined by the Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, President and CEO of Interfaith Alliance. A leading advocate for civil rights and religious freedom, they reflect on Duvall's embodiment of The Apostle E.F., the film's portrayal of charismatic Christian traditions, the power of faith, and its meditation(s) on the color line and our shared humanity and life journeys. February is a notoriously slow month for film releases, so we took in a couple movies that were released in the past month, Sam Raimi's SEND HELP (2:53), starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien as an employee and her boss playing mind games as they attempt to survive on an island following a plane crash; and THIS IS NOT A TEST (15:20), about a group of high schoolers hunkered down in their school, trying to survive a fast-zombie apocalypse. Over on Patreon, we had you vote on Robert Duvall movies, and you chose FALLING DOWN.

They dig into what made Duvall such a singular screen presence, from quiet restraint to explosive intensity, and why he remains one of the great American character actors. The conversation highlights key performances including TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE GODFATHER, FALLING DOWN, APOCALYPSE NOW, and TENDER MERCIES, plus a filmmaker-to-filmmaker discussion about directing styles, take counts, and what it takes to get truthful performances on camera. CW: This episode contains discussion of sexual assault and violence, including abuse of minors, in relation to recent revelations in the Jeffrey Epstein case. Listener discretion advised.   Some Big News Weeks led us to a slightly unwieldy conversation about several topics alongside Joel Schumacher's 1999 thriller 8mm. Written by Se7en scribe Andrew Keving Walker and boasting a rich ensemble cast including Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, Catherine Keener, James Gandolfini, and Peter Stormare, the film explores elite depravity, snuff films, and the dark core of the American dream where desperate people's lives become a commodity. We first begin with some thoughts on recent events at the Berlin Film Festival and offer our definitive answer to the question on everyone's lips, "Is cinema political?" Then, we venture into Schumacher's film, a not-very-good grisly crime thriller with some resonant considerations about the brutalization of young women within the machinery of capital. Finally, we share some personal thoughts on the most recent releases from the Epstein Files, what they tell us about the nature of power in the world, and offer up an alternative movie title for those thinking more deeply about the case's reverberations. Get access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Balancing activism with personal life and relationships can be difficult. At this crucial time in our history, activists are burning out when we need them the most. That's why this event with Kitty Stryker, who has spent two decades as a direct activist and a street medic during radical actions, is so timely.  Stryker, author of Love Rebels: How I Learned to Burn It Down Without Burning Out, has both burned it down and burned herself out. Trying to "show up bravely" as a leader despite exhaustion, she almost destroyed herself.  But now she says, "Activism does not demand martyrdom to be effective ... it's important to have some fun together!" She'll show us how to build effective teams composed of people with different backgrounds, interests, and abilities, while managing the inevitable internal conflicts. She will discuss how to inspire powerful action while keeping the team safe, how to nurture yourself and others while staying in the fight, how to make your most effective contribution, and how to decide when you truly need to take a break.  About the Speaker Kitty Stryker is the author of Love Rebels: How I Learned to Burn It Down Without Burning Out, three books on consent, and articles about activism and politics. She founded the Ladies High Tea and Pornography Society in London and has been a radical activist since she was ten.  Commonwealth Club World Affairs of California is a nonprofit public forum; we welcome donations made during registration to support the production of our programming. The fall of Jericho reminds us that some walls are too big to push over—but not too big for God. This message explores: Why God's presence matters more than the miracle itself How obedience unlocks breakthrough How faith can redeem the past and impact future generations Why the victory shout always follows obedience If you're facing a wall you can't overcome on your own, this message will strengthen your faith and remind you that God is still in the miracle-working business.

[School of Movies 2025] This is a commissioned episode for our hardworking Pez-loving Discord moderator Mike Hasko. It's a relic from 1993, a period just after the Cold War and not too long before the War on Terror, and the focus is on a middle-aged, white, American, divorced, straight, cis, male office-worker who one boiling hot Los Angeles morning decides that he has had enough. The man known throughout most of the movie by his personalised license plate as D-FENS (played with vigour by Michael Douglas in this memorable and divisive Joel Schumacher joint) steps out of the car he leaves stuck in traffic, walks across a city that is not designed for pedestrian travel, and clashes with everyone who gets in his way. The creative team are really trying to have their cake and eat it by making the protagonist also the antagonist and how much they succeed or fail is very much down to the perception of the viewer. Pull up a breakfast 'Whomelette' and an ice-cold, aggressively-priced can of Coca Cola and we shall guide you through this eventful day.

At BossMom, we're normalizing the conversations that help you grow a business while raising a family. A woman in a flowing gown and heels carefully straps on knee pads, positions herself at the top of a staircase, and deliberately throws herself down the stairs. It sounds absurd. Maybe even reckless. But when you understand why Michelle Lang does this—and what it represents—it becomes one of the most honest conversations about motherhood you'll ever encounter. After 12 years away from her career as a professional stunt performer, Lang has returned to throwing herself off buildings, getting hit by cars, and tumbling down staircases. But this isn't just about revisiting old skills. It's about what happens when mothers finally get enough mental space to ask themselves a devastating question: "Who am I if I'm not just someone's mom?" Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible, where we journey together through the pages of scripture and let the Word point us to the Living Word—Jesus himself. In today's episode for September 30th, our host Hunter invites us to warm our hearts by the fires of God's love as we read from Zechariah 7–9 and Luke 13. We'll witness powerful prophecies of restoration and hope in Zechariah, and hear Jesus challenge our assumptions about tragedy and repentance in Luke. As Hunter reflects, the headlines of both the ancient and modern world often declare that "the world is falling down," but Jesus brings good news—a kingdom that is rising up in the midst of brokenness. With gentle encouragement, Hunter leads us to consider our own need for God's renewing grace, to trust in the hope he offers, and to join in prayer for our world, our families, and our own hearts. So whether this is your first day or your twelfth year with us, settle in as we center our lives on the One who holds all things together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The world is falling down. Those are the headlines—then and now. Tragedy, disaster, violence—they fill the news and our lives with sorrow and confusion. When Jesus looked at the headlines of his own day, he spoke of Galileans killed by Pilate, and of people crushed when a tower fell in Siloam. He posed the question many of us have probably wondered: Were their suffering and deaths the sign that they were the worst sinners? Was this God's judgment against them, or a measure of their worth in God's eyes? But Jesus turns our thinking upside down. He tells us no, their suffering was not because they were the worst, or because God didn't care, or that they were unimportant to Him. The world is broken, Jesus says. Towers fall, tragedy strikes, death comes—sometimes seemingly at random, sometimes to the pious and sometimes to the publican. This is the world we inhabit: a world fallen, groaning, filled with loss. But Jesus is not content just to comment on the news. He proclaims something entirely new: The kingdom of God is rising up. Where the world falls, God's kingdom grows. The kingdom is like a gardener, patient with a barren fig tree, tending it, waiting for fruit. It's like a woman bent over for eighteen years, suddenly raised up and set free. It's like a tiny mustard seed that grows into a tree, so large that the birds can make their nests there. It's yeast, small and hidden at first, yet permeating the whole loaf. Jesus brings good news into this falling world. He goes to Jerusalem; He is lifted up on a cross for this very reason—that the world, broken and lost, could be made new. He offers hope: not just for the world, but for each of us, for our own broken souls. He calls us to repent, to turn to Him, to let Him meet our needs and restore what is shattered in us. This is our invitation—to center our lives on the good news of Jesus, to trust Him and join Him in His mission. We can participate with Him: shining light in the darkness, extending mercy and justice, and bearing witness to the kingdom rising up in a world that so desperately needs it. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. That's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL

Brittany Weinberger is the author of a fascinating book called "Whispers in the Cradle: Uncovering the Dark Side of English Nursery Rhymes". Jamie and John met Brittany at CrimeCon, and they HAD to have her on to talk about the book.Buy "Whispers in the Cradle" here! https://amzn.to/41LVI52Follow Brittany online!Instagram: @tinybrit05TikTok: @tiny_bit05Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1373152197067111Book Description:How could something as innocent as “London Bridge is Falling Down” carry the weight of destruction and death? Why does “Ring Around the Rosie” feel eerily like a whispered funeral dirge? And who—or what—really inspired “The Muffin Man”? With each page, I peeled back the layers of folklore and unearthed stories of political intrigue, forbidden faiths, brutal punishment, and untold tragedy. This isn't just a collection of familiar tunes—it's a descent into the shadowy corners of history, where nursery rhymes served as coded messages, laments, and warnings. They speak of kings toppled, children exploited, families torn apart, and lives consumed by fire, famine, and fear. These songs were never as innocent as they seemed. If you think you know nursery rhymes, think again. Whispers in the Cradle will shatter everything you thought you understood about the melodies of your childhood. Some truths are too dark to stay buried, and some whispers too haunting to ignore. --For early, ad free episodes and monthly exclusive bonus content, join our Patreon!
