On Today's Talk with Erika… It is officially National Cancer Survivor Month, also known as JUNE, and today's guest is very special. Bonnie Addario, is Co-Founder, Board Chair and patient advocate of the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer. Bonnie was at the top of her game in 2004, leading one of the largest privately held oil companies in the United States, when she received the gut-wrenching diagnosis of stage 3B lung cancer. Bonnie happened to be the first woman to be elected to the California Independent Oil Marketers Association. So, as a woman seemingly in control of so many aspects of her life, she now had to take cancer by the horns. She has now empowered thousands of patients and given them a voice. Recognizing the need for education, empowerment, advocacy, and research to help patients and families, Bonnie and her family founded the “Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation” (ALCF) in 2006. In 2019, ALCF and the Lung Cancer Alliance merged, forming GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer. In 2020, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from CURE Magazine. And she's now author of The Living Room: A Lung Cancer Community of Courage. Links mentioned in the show found below. According to the Mayo Clinic, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Bonnie Addario was diagnosed with stage 3B lung cancer at age 55, when she was at the top of her game and leading one of the largest privately held oil companies in the United States. Bonnie talks about her journey with lung cancer and her new book, THE LIVING ROOM- A LUNG CANCER COMMUNITY OF COURAGE, By Bonnie J. Addario with Jon Land. Bonnie is joined by Gina Hollenbeck, a nurse that runs marathons having never smoked a cigarette but is living with stage 4 lung cancer. Bonnie also created GO-2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, the largest lung cancer organization in the United States.
On October 15, CURE recognized five individuals for their contributions to the lung cancer space and raising awareness to end the stigma, inform, connect, and empower anyone who has been impacted by lung cancer. During the inaugural virtual event, four individuals — two physicians, a nurse and a patient turned advocate — were awarded for their contributions to the lung cancer community. The program also recognized one Lifetime Achievement award winner. In this episode of the “CURE Talks Cancer” podcast, we spoke with Bonnie J. Addario, Carolyn Baggett, Dr. Jennifer Garst, Dr. Fred Hirsh and Deborah Pickworth about their contributions and why bringing the lung cancer community is vital in raising awareness around the disease.
Bonnie J. Addario, Co-Founder, Board Chair, GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer discusses the foundation along with other patient advocacy group's support of Guardant Health's "Clear Your View" campaign to bring awareness around comprehensive genomic testing for patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) before first-line treatment.
Lung cancer claims a life every three minutes and is the number one cancer killer. This disease gets less funding than other major diseases. Bonnie J. Addario is the survivor of lung cancer and is working to breakdown the stigma around this cancer. She joins Janice Ellig to share her journey and explain how she overcome extreme adversity.tags: health, business, leader, change, advocate, cancer, issues, non profit, organization, education, educator, survivor, lung cancer, ellig group, truechat
People always hear about the research being done in laboratories and academic centers. But now, with the click of a button, patients can pave the way for lung cancer research, too. To help kick off Lung Cancer Awareness Month, we spoke with Sandra Shaw – director of the lung cancer patient registry at The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF) – as she explains what the registry is and why it is important for patients to participate.
