In the final Haunted History Chronicles episode of 2024, join me as I sit down with Lisa Holman—paranormal investigator, author, and cancer survivor. Lisa shares her powerful story of battling breast cancer, the support that helped her through, and her book My Boob Tried to Kill Me: A Cancer Survivor's Journal. We also discuss her experiences in the paranormal field, exploring themes of accessibility, paraunity, and what it means to be part of this unique community. This heartfelt conversation is one of resilience, survival, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.  My Special Guest Is Lisa Holman  In 2018 Lisa joined the Jamaica Inn paranormal team where she discovered how to show guests different methods of investigating and debunking what could be classed as paranormal because, as most people will know, not everything is paranormal. Unfortunately, in 2022 Lisa was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer and took a leave of absence from the Jamaica Inn paranormal team. Her experience with this awful disease spurred her on to write her book ‘My Boob Tried to Kill Me!'. Her aim is to help those who have been affected by cancer, whether they be the patient or one of their loved ones. Cancer doesn't affect just the patient but all those around them in ever-decreasing circles.  In this episode, you will be able to:  1. Lisa's cancer journey and the inspiration behind her book My Boob Tried to Kill Me: A Cancer Survivor's Journal. 2. Insights into the paranormal field, including accessibility, paraunity, and her experiences as an investigator. 3. A heartfelt conversation about resilience, support, and the strength found in both loved ones and the paranormal community. What is it about social media that draws the breast cancer community together? We are going to explore this question with my guest, Dr. Tasha Gandamihardja, consultant breast cancer surgeon and medical educator on social media under the name, @DrTashaG. We will look at the benefits, downfalls, information, and disinformation provided by various social media platforms on this episode of the DiepCJourney podcast. How can you find the right community that supports both your emotional and educational needs when each person is unique and there are distinct types of breast cancer? Why is it important for physicians to interact and be active on social media? Is it necessary for them to be on social media? I have the distinct honor of being listed as an author on a published paper with her that we will discuss in our conversation. The paper is open access and is entitled, “The Role of Social Media and Breast Cancer: How Does It Impact Patients?”  I acknowledge our fellow colleagues and authors on the paper: ·       Sara Liyanage, author, and patient advocate ·       Dr. Anne W. Peled, dual-trained breast cancer and plastic surgeon. ·       Yazan A. Masannat of the UK, consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon and host of the iBreast webinar series. Patients who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer often absorb a small percentage of the information they are flooded with at their first consultation. Dr. Tasha tells us how she gently navigates patients through this journey by providing resources to explore while at home and making decisions about next steps. Dr. Tasha tells us social media can provide a complementary resource for patients to feel connected to a like-minded community to share similar experiences. But there can be limitations and challenges finding the right community. We focus on exploring communities that provide evidence-based information, so patients get the right information and tamp down the misinformation that is found on social media. Where is the future of information for the breast cancer community? We explore the value and impact of AI and how we feel it is our responsibility as curators of content to guide the breast cancer community in the use and value of AI in finding information. I recently met someone who said that they learned about my podcast from my LinkedIn profile. We were meeting regarding our work. She shared that she also had a recent diagnosis of breast cancer - at the same time that I did. She was new to survivorship just like me. It has been just over a year since the heaviness of survivorship really hit me. It forced me to leave my job because I happened to be working specifically with breast cancer clinical trials. I had to get outside of my head and find a way to get back to living life and not be obsessed with breast cancer and my fear of it limiting my life.  So my energy to keep sharing my story and providing anecdotes that help me to get on with my life has been boosted after that interaction last week with someone who knows what it feels like to be on this journey.  Subscribe, rate, and review the Breast Cancer Life podcast.  The content of this podcast is not intended to substitute professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. A year ago things were about to get real serious. It will be a year on May 11th since the MRI guided biopsy that came back as invasive cancer. So now I have been reflecting on what I was doing a year ago on select dates in the past several weeks.   What I really want to share is about how I am moving on. That did not seem possible at all for most of the past year. Especially, when I realized how stuck I felt for quite a while between the recovery from surgery until just a few months ago. I am not free of unhelpful thoughts - they come and go. I am also getting important thoughts that come into my head. I shift my thoughts to the things I have control over. That leads me to my exercise. I do know that exercise is the best medicine (in addition to the hormonal therapy). So now, when I feel ok and not so scared that my cancer will return, I am faced with a new challenge that is throwing one of my biggest coping strategies out of balance.  I fell and broke my wrist 10 days ago. I ended up with a cast on my right lower arm and part of my hand.  How was I going to survive?  Exercise, including lifting weights, are part of how I have grown stronger over the past many months. It is part of my coping strategy, where I feel control over preventing any recurrence.  LET'S CONNECT: connect@breastcancerlife.org

It was my first screening mammogram since being diagnosed with breast cancer. This mammogram was being done on the breast that did not have cancer in it at the time of my initial diagnosis. After reading the report from this mammogram, I wandered off into the world of searching for more information online. It turned out to be counterproductive and I developed a strategy to direct all of my thoughts into a place where they can stay until I need them. I share the whole story in this episode.  Breast Cancer Life is a podcast about my breast cancer experience. [16:10] Why is Christine still looking at ways to let more things go, even though she has picked her niche? [22:40] Does Christine now feel like an expert in movement for scoliosis? [26:29] We can't predict how our interests and inclinations may change or what our niche may be in a few years from now! So we do have to stick with it, which I think is really hard, which is difficult at times." - Christine   "If you commit to that journey and stay consistent with it, you will get there, you will get somewhere." - Christine

Millions more are diagnosed and survive cancer annually. As yoga teachers, we may have someone in our class who is from the cancer community or we may be interested in learning more about how we can better support someone dealing with cancer. Tyla supports those with cancer, care teams, and yoga instructors through her specialized yoga therapy protocols, classes, and trainings. She describes herself as a movement optimist, and her philosophy is that with classes tailored to the individual, yoga can be made accessible to everyone and all students can become more confident movers.    Tyla answers some questions yoga teachers often have, including: "How do I keep a student with cancer safe in a yoga class?" and “How can I gain the confidence to work with people from the cancer community?”. She also addresses specific questions about supporting students with different types of cancers, students who use compression garments, the impacts of post treatment meds, and much more.   Key Takeaways: [3:11] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Tyla Arnason. Dave Durante, former USA Gymnastics Olympic team member and co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness, talks about his journey from elite athlete to coach. He details the importance of consistency in movement of the body, and the value of smaller but consistent periods of activity each day. Dave shares tips on how cancer survivors can start to regain some of their strength and mobility back after treatments, and the importance of having support along the way to maintain consistency and achieve fitness goals. He also reminds us to prioritize the process and not the end result. Key Highlights: The importance of mental fitness to help improve physical fitness. Tips for cancer survivors to regain strength and mobility after treatment. The power of consistency and focusing on the process rather than the end result to achieve goals. About our guest: Dave Durante is a multiple time USA gymnastics national champion and a member of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Team as an alternate. Following his retirement from competition, Dave helped coach his alma mater, Stanford University, to an NCAA Team Title in 2009. He remained involved in the sport by serving on the Athlete Advisory Committee with the United States Olympic Committee and the USA Gymnastics Men's Technical Committee until 2018. From 2013-2015, Dave was a lead coach with the CrossFit Gymnastics L1 course, where he developed the CrossFit Gymnastics Advanced Course. Dave is now the co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness and Power Monkey Camp, which host adult fitness events worldwide. They also provide technical education in various training specialties through their social media platforms and their Power Monkey Training app. Key Moments: 12 minutes: On the importance of mental health to perform - Leading up to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, I just missed out on the Olympic team. I was part of the Olympic selection process team, one of the last ten guys. They took eight to Athens. I was one of the two that they didn't take to Athens. I did everything I could, and I was in the best shape of my life. I was so ready competitively, but I was mentally a mess. Everything that I'm doing well physically, the complete opposite is happening on the mental side. So I found a balance in my teammates and things outside of the sport. 36 minutes: How to ease back into exercise after cancer treatments - Start with bodyweight. Really phase one is about more mobility as we discussed, but also a stronger core. So those are two things that we recommend people doing on a daily basis. You should spend five to ten minutes on core work. You spend five to ten minutes on mobility work on a daily basis. 40 minutes: On the power of consistency - It's imperative on you to wake up every day and put a priority on how important these things are to you. It doesn't need to start massive. And I think that that's the thing that's really important with consistency. It can start as easy as I'm going to walk to the end of the block today and come back and just do that for this week. When we talk about consistency, it needs to start with something attainable, something small, one day at a time, and then allow it to grow from there.Visit the Manta Cares website Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. After being told that the average survival time is 12-18 months with this diagnosis and that 5% of patients live past 5 years, she became determined to not only live and survive through this cancer for herself and her family, but to also help others gain access to holistic healing modalities. She shares her journey through having such a terrifying diagnosis, treatment and how she prioritized herself and her health to get through treatment and the aftermath of it all. Shenell talks about how important it is for all of us to make time for ourselves and our healing rather than waiting until it's too late.

Belong.Life is both a social and professional network for managing and navigating treatments, with a mission to improve the quality of life and the quality of cancer care around the world through technology, engagement, data, and AI. Guest Biography: Dr. Daniel Vorobiof is the Medical Director of Belong.Life, creator of Belong – Beating Cancer Together, the world's largest social network and navigator app for cancer patients, caregivers, and medical professionals. He is the founder and former medical director of the Sandton Oncology Centre in Johannesburg and has published more than 120 peer-reviewed articles in international medical journals. He formerly served as an executive board member of the International Committee of ASCO. Table of Contents:The Online Cancer Community Goes Global Dr. Vorobiof explains that as a cancer patient, you have more questions than answers, and it's hard to know what to do or who to trust. Belong is a “GPS for cancer patients.” It's a social network for support and navigating the treatment of cancer.  The App is Safe, Free, and Personalized Belong is an international application, it's free to use, and completely anonymous. All your private information stays private. You can choose which groups you want to be a part of in the app, according to the diagnosis you have and the circumstances that apply to you. Serving Over 300,000 Patients Worldwide Dr. Vorobiof says, “I wasn't looking for a new career in my life, but this was the opportunity for me.” In 40 years as an oncology practitioner, he estimates he treated 20,000-30,000 cancer patients. Now with Belong, he has over 300,000 patients all over the world after just four years on the app. The Comfort of Anonymity Since the app is anonymous, patients can ask questions they might be afraid or embarrassed to ask in person or with family members present at a regular doctor's visit. Plus, caregivers can be active on Belong too; an estimated 20% of the app's total 400,000 users are caregivers. Surveying the Cancer Community about COVID Vaccines Just three days after sending out a survey to the app users about how they were feeling about the COVID vaccines, Dr. Vorobiof received over 1000 quality responses. Detailed findings are still being combed through, but he says 96% of responders said they'd had the vaccine, and 4% reported they did not want to receive it. Making Sense of Clinical Trials with Belong.Life The app bridges a huge need in the cancer community in regard to clinical trials with its Clinical Match feature. Taking in a person's information (de-identified to remain anonymous), the app can match someone with any clinical trial/s they may be suited for. Bringing Community & Cancer Support to the 21st Century Receiving support on the online app is simple and intuitive. Emotional support is crucial for both patients and caregivers. On this episode of WE Have Cancer, fellow cancer podcast host Jess Thomas Nelson shares how her life has changed since being diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer in January 2020. Since then, she’s learned that practically everyone has been impacted by cancer in some way, and has become passionate about sharing her guest’s cancer stories with the world.  Guest Biography: Jess Thomas Nelson is the host of the My Cancer Story Podcast, which she started shortly after her thyroidectomy in February 2020. In her own words, “I’m not famous and you wouldn’t know me from anywhere, but I too have been affected by cancer.” She has always loved the practice of acupuncture and utilized both eastern and western medicine while recovering from her surgery last year.  Table of Contents: The Power of the Cancer Community and Sharing Cancer Stories After starting My Cancer Story, Jess was blown away by people reaching out eager to share their own stories with the world. She’s learned that everyone in a person’s life is affected by cancer, and nearly everyone knows someone who’s had cancer. How it Feels to Hear “You Have Cancer” On Christmas Eve, Jess’s endocrinologist told her the nodes they’d found were most likely thyroid cancer. She kept the news from her family until after the holidays, not wanting to burden them with the weight of her diagnosis. But after she did share the news with her close family and friends, she was moved to see how many people in her life stepped up as proud caretakers and supporters. Sharing My Cancer Story with the World While lying on the acupuncture table, I got the idea to start a podcast. Jess felt that her story was fairly quick and painless in comparison to the experiences of many others, and she knew she wanted to create a space for folks to share those experiences. She says COVID-19 and quarantine pushed her to start since it was already harder to connect with members of the community in person. What’s Next for My Cancer Story? Jess’s podcast began with one episode per month and quickly grew to one episode a week. Even though sometimes the episodes can get heavy, Jess knows she wants to keep sharing these powerful cancer stories with the community.  Recovery with Integrative Cancer Care  Jess became interested in integrative medicine and integrative nutrition a few years before her diagnosis. When she was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer she went to her acupuncturist for help with her meridians and endocrine system.  My Life Without a Thyroid After Jess’s thyroidectomy, she shares it took a while for her endocrinologist to find the right synthroid dose, and that she had to wait at least 30 minutes before having coffee or eating meals, had to become more mindful of her alcohol consumption, and tried to remember to take all her vitamins. While the adjustment may have been difficult at first, now all the timing considerations and medications are simply a way of life. For the last episode we thought it was only right to shine the light on some amazing BAME organisations within the cancer community and hear short snippets of why they started and what they do. Leanne and Charlotte are joined by Beverley De'gale co-founder of ACLT, Jean representing Cancer Black Care, Iyana co- founder of Sakoon Through Cancer, Adedoyinsola representing Cancer Education and Toral representing BAME Cancer Support. It is so important especially with everything that has been going on this year that we come together and support each other and don't stand divided. What is lovely is each organisation has different focuses so if we need to refer people there is always an outlet. Together we stand. The last episode of the series guys, it have been such a pleasure speaking with the guests and interacting with the listeners. From launching a successful (and, at the time, controversial) book franchise that made people think twice about "conventional cardio" to creating systems for a thriving fitness business, and more.
