Tasker Smith is a technical instructor at MIT's Pappalardo Lab for Mechanical Engineering. As you'll hear through this interview, his background has a striking resemblance to television's Adam Savage of MythBusters. That is, he's held roles in all sorts of environments: performance, toys, consumer products, and lucky for the young mechanical engineers at MIT he wound up eventually making his way to higher education, cultivating young talent to be as skilled technically and emotionally to enter a world of professional engineering as they can possibly be.We talk about approaches from the lab that I think will be of interest to everyone, but especially those educators who are serious about maker education, and the role that pre-engineering programs play in schools and afterschool all over the country. If you're looking for tips and best practices, just curious what goes on in the Mech E lab at MIT, or excited to learn more about how Tasker went from studying theatre arts to modelling toys, stick around.A special treat from this episode, Tasker offers a set of files for the poster panels that come up toward the end of the interview for listeners to grab and repurpose in their own shops and maker spaces. Do check out the shownotes at NoSuchThingPodcast.org to find that gift from him.Links from this episode:Pappalardo Lab on Twitter: https://twitter.com/pappalardolab?lang=enJapanese drawers links: http://digg.com/video/japanese-joinery-drawersTasker's Make Mag Leather Article: https://makezine.com/2018/07/09/use-3d-printing-shape-leather/Z Corporation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_CorporationContinuum Innovation, Boston: https://www.continuuminnovation.com/en/Caine's Arcade: https://youtu.be/faIFNkdq96UStatasys: https://www.stratasys.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.
There is no "season" for creativity... it should flourish year round in every school and home. Unfortunately it doesn't, in part because we adults have other agendas for the kids we teach and nurture. Annie talks with Alice Lin, Director of Community Engagement for Imagination Foundation about the phenomenal success of the short film, Caine's Arcade, and why creativity is one of the most critical skills of the future. About the Imagination Foundation The Imagination Foundation's mission is to find, foster, and fund creativity and entrepreneurship in children around the world to raise a new generation of innovators and problem solvers who have the tools they need to build the world they imagine. Imagination Foundation was born out of the overwhelming global success of the short film, Caine's Arcade. The film launched a movement to celebrate the natural creative talents of every child, and the Imagination Foundation was created to grow and sustain this movement. Through their annual Global Cardboard Challenge kids all over the world are invited to build something amazing out of cardboard, recycled materials and imagination. Then, on Saturday, October 11, 2014, communities will come together and play. When Nirvan Mullick's story behind Caine's Arcade hit the front page of Yahoo!, the media giant proclaimed it as the most positively received story on their home page of all time. Part philosopher, part filmmaker, part marketer, part adventurer, and a whole lotta awesome - one day Nirvan walked into used parts store to get a door handle, and walked out with the beginnings of one of the biggest creative movements in recent history. His film about a 9-year-old entrepreneur received over a million views in 24 hours, sparked a global creative movement, generated 100's of thousands of dollars in fundraising and scholarships, a chance meeting with Bill Clinton, TED talks, and more. feat guest host, Susan Tie. www.twitter.com/nirvan www.twitter.com/imagination The Caine's Arcade Film: http://vimeo.com/40000072
Colin Marshall sits down at the top of the Hotel Wilshire with Lynn Garrett, proprietor of popular online community Hidden Los Angeles and fifth-generation Angeleno. They discuss how best to prepare Germans for their Los Angeles vacation, since their guidebooks have failed; which human needs the many persistent myths about this city fulfill; how here, you are your own salvation; the revitalization of the Los Angeles River, as against the notion that "all it is is dead bodies and gang members"; Los Angeles as reflector of the observer's own particular hatreds; getting to know the city not as a city, but as a constellation of villages; her art-school exploration of the city back when she "didn't know not to"; who hangs out and talks on Hidden Los Angeles, and which topics get them most fired up; the human tendency to get upset about change of any kind, whether positive or negative, and to adjust perceptions accordingly; what happened when Hidden Los Angeles went viral, attracting 250,000 followers; Caine's Arcade, Skid Row charities, and all the other ways she's found the community can help (when not arguing); what the followers teach her about Los Angeles, the city no one person can possibly know; and what she learns from leaving the city, as well as how she makes herself an outsider when in it.
