Why is homelessness surging in California? To find the answer, we tell the story of an inspiring young American that journeyed from the White House to Skid Row, and hear what he learned along the way.Support the show: https://redpilledamerica.com/support/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Join us for a fun, casual debate about which Skid Row album reigns supreme - Their self-titled debut 'Skid Row', or their sophomore album 'Slave To The Grind'! We talk about our personal experiences with each album and what we still love about each one before picking our personal winner.
A new study found that there are fewer homeless people in Hollywood and Venice, but more on Skid Row. An L.A. County Supervisor wants L.A. to fire back at the Trump administration's lawsuit, and we're days away from the 4th of July, but there are already warnings about fireworks. The L.A. Local is sponsored by the LA Car Guy family of dealerships.
Interview by Kris PetersSpeculation has been rife for years regarding a possible reunion between Sebastian Bach and Skid Row, and it will probably continue until one or both parties pulls stumps on their career, but at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter when both parties are still doing their thing, and doing it well. Of course, there are going to be those fans who would love to see the band as it once was, but for the realists, that will likely never happen.Luckily for them - and everyone who loved hard rock and metal - that Sebastian Bach will always possess a love for the music he was part of bringing to life, and as such, always champions the cause wherever and however he can. That cause comes to Australian shores this November, when Bach returns to these shores to play Skid Row's debut self-titled album in its entirety for the first time on Australian soil.Fans can expect an explosive set featuring hits like Youth Gone Wild, 18 and Life, Big Guns, and I Remember You alongside select tracks from Slave To The Grind and throughout Bach's solo career, including last year's well-received Child Within The Man.HEAVY spent some time with Sebastian Bach recently to talk about the upcoming tour and playing some of those songs for the very first time Down Under."The first record is only 45 minutes long, so that's not a full show," Bach pointed out when we asked what to expect. "We'll be doing new songs from my new record, Child Within the Man, and we'll be doing a couple of songs from Slave to the Grind. But we got some really good new songs like What Do I Got to Lose, which is the closest thing that I've had to a hit in 35 years."We ask if there were any difficulties in playing the debut record in full due to the fact that when it was written, the band likely would not have given thought to the whole album being played in full one day."There's certain notes that are very challenging," he nodded. "In America, we did another tour where we did the album Slave to the Grind in its entirety with 40 cities, but what I learned, when you said was it challenging relearning the first record? I learned that the first record was more about singing, and Slave to the Grind was more about screaming. A song like Living on a Chain Gang off Slave, that is just me screaming at the top of my lungs for the whole song. On the first record, there's more pop and a pop sensibility. Slave to the Grind is way more metal, but the first record, Skid Row, it captures a real innocence about us as a band and about the times. It just has a real innocent quality to it."In the full interview, Bach talked us through the touring schedule and his preference of playing more shows as opposed to having days off, the musical climate that spawned Skid Row's self-titled debut album and where the band fit in at the time.We spoke about the massive intensity lift between the first album and the more aggressive follow-up Slave To The Grind and why the band went that way instead of playing it safe and rehashing a successful formula, what he has learned as a vocalist over his 40-year career, the significant changes in the music industry, how he maintains his vocal range and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Sitars and Symphonies: LA Composer Reena Esmail Fuses Indian Ragas with Western Rhythms We continue our California composers series with Reena Esmail. Her childhood in Los Angeles had two soundtracks: the Western classical music her parents loved, and the old, scratchy Bollywood tapes her paternal grandparents would play over and over. Those multicultural influences shaped what would become the driving question of her work: how do you invite people from different cultures onto the same stage to build a relationship and create music together? Composing is how Esmail has made her mark — by putting Western classical musicians in conversation with Indian artists, building bridges between violinists and sitar players, tabla drummers and western singers. She's an artist in residence with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, has composed with unhoused singers from Skid Row, and her music has been performed by major orchestras and choirs all over the world. How a UC Berkeley Professor Confronts Division With a Vision for Belonging Professor john a. powell spent much of his early life feeling like he didn't belong. At just 11 years old, he became estranged from his deeply religious family. After questioning church doctrine and not getting the answers he was looking for, powell — who spells his name in lowercase — left the church, and his father did not speak to him for five years. But that pivotal moment was the beginning of the path that led him to his life's work. powell is the director of the Othering and Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley, where he's also a professor of law, African American studies and ethnic studies. He's the author of two recent books, “Belonging Without Othering,” and “The Power of Bridging.” powell spoke with host Sasha Khokha as part of our series on Californians and resilience.
Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 13 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. We start the Season Thirteen Finale off strong with a look the incredible life and work of Zaydee Sanchez, a Mexican American documentary photographer, visual journalist and writer originally from Tulare, California whose work focuses on labor workers, the environment, and migration, who is interviewed by Kendal Roney. They begin with a discussion of Sanchez's journey of becoming a journalist including how she started off by taking photos at Skid Row to display the heart of the community and then transitioned to documenting a Guatemalan man for two years. They talk about the impact visual journalism has on our society and why it's so valuable. Sanchez dives into the process of documenting hot button topics of recent years and explains how she paints an authentic picture of the people and communities she covers, noting the strict morals that go behind it all. They conclude with Sanchez explaining her evolution as a visual journalist and why it started from a passion project. And we send the 13th season of Catalyst off into the sunset with this concluding interview of TikTok content creator Sarah Pascarella by Samantha Perez. A graduate of Cal State Long Beach University with a degree in Interior Design and a minor in Journalism, Sarah discusses how she made the decision post-graduation to live abroad as an Au Pair in Paris, France. Sarah and Samantha discuss how Sarah, having not known the language at first and experiencing the cultural shift of the move, decided to document her experiences on TikTok sparking discussions on the cultural differences. Sarah's documentation of her life and work have given her a unique voice as a content creator, as she looks at her own perspective shifts in witty and authentic ways. The pair also discuss how diving into the role of influencer has given her new career goals and how she plans to integrate her creativity into her influencer content. They wrap up the interview with some poignant advice from Sarah regarding taking new leaps in life and how new experiences can shape you, just as her choices in career and living in Paris have shaped her own development as a person.
Ever been so enraged in traffic you contemplated getting out of your car to flip someone off? Bobby explores this universal frustration with hilarious candor, sharing his recent experience acting as a road rage surrogate for his friend. It's not just about anger—it's about human connection in our modern world where we've traded physical confrontations for symbolic gestures.Bobby takes us along on his recent comedy tour journey from Salt Lake City (where legendary comic Rory Scoville was performing next door) to downtown Los Angeles (where he accidentally wandered near Skid Row). The constant thread through these adventures? His unmedicated ADHD brain noticing everything from bad paint jobs in bathrooms to the psychological warfare of airplane deplaning etiquette. The most touching moments come when Bobby reflects on the friends who supported his early comedy career—those who showed up to open mics and struggled to find positive feedback beyond "everything you did up there was English." This raw honesty about the comedy journey resonates whether you're pursuing your own creative passion or just trying to figure out how to navigate social interactions without losing your mind. With his signature unfiltered style, Bobby reminds us we're all just trying to figure life out, whether we're giving middle fingers on highways or watching our friends chase their dreams while wondering if they'll ever "make it." Sometimes the most human response is simply acknowledging our shared frustrations and finding humor in the chaos.Come see Bobby headline in Cleveland (May 30-31) or Austin at the Velveeta Room, and check out his Patreon for exclusive updates about upcoming shows in your city.

Audrey II was more than just a mean green mother from outer space. Back in 1984, and voiced by Levi Stubbs, he was the main attraction of the movie musical, Little Shop of Horrors. Based on an off-Broadway show, which itself was based on a 1960 horror comedy of the same name, the Frank Oz directed flick achieved cult classic status on VHS and Beta. But now, decades later, are we still singing its praises? Are abusive boyfriends, exploitive bosses, and blood-thirsty plants the stuff of sing-a-longs? Or is this Rick Moranis' finest hour? The Old Roommates head down Skid Row and give it all a revisit through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. True Crime Tuesday presents: Murder On Skid Row with Author, Charlene Wexler! The homeless and migrants are not new to Chicago. In the 1960s, there was Chicago's Skid Row, centered at Madison and Halsted Streets. Now an area filled with recently built upscale housing and trendy businesses near Greektown, decades ago it was a downtrodden community occupied by lost souls, mainly veterans from the war nobody wanted to recognize—Vietnam. Mel, a young dentist who believes he can do good for the people living on Skid Row, enters into this world in 1966. It is a community so different than the working-class neighborhood in which he grew up—a world of gangs, bums, politicians, prostitutes, and murderers—and a few kind-hearted souls who want to help. While trying to become one of those kind-hearted souls by providing dental therapy to his patients, Mel becomes a suspect in a double murder. Did Mel do it, or was it one of the Skid Row swindlers and hustlers? Find out in Murder on Skid Row. On today's TCT, we talk to the Author of "Murder On Skid Row", Charlene Wexler, about the parallels between her own experiences with her dentist husband and his practice in Chicago, and her experiences, and the story in the book! We also talk about how the city of Chicago has changed since the mid 60's, when the book took place, and about the characters and setting of the book as well! This week, in Middlebury, Indiana, a mother does not approve of her teen daughter's choice in boyfriends, causing tension & fighting in the home. It also leads to the mother's disappearance, but luckily there's some evidence that leads to a suspect, whoo spills the whole plan. It's a terrifyingly cold blooded plot, that ends in murder, but definitely didn't have to. Plus, one of the killers says he "just wanted to kill" in a letter to the judge!!Along the way, we find out that a band might be hard to hear over a tractor pull, that teen love is never worth throwing your entire future in the garbage, and that if someone really wants to kill, it's not very easy to stop them!!New episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports!
