When the Pentagon formally designated Anthropic a “supply chain risk” this March, the dispute put a spotlight on civil liberties concerns in the AI-era. Anthropic had reportedly hit an impasse with the Trump administration over the company's push for guardrails banning the use of its Claude model to conduct mass surveillance. Anthropic's CEO had called such surveillance a “red line” it would not cross. But where exactly should those lines be drawn, and who should draw them? Few people have spent more time thinking about those issues than Cindy Cohn, executive director of the San Francisco-based civil liberties group Electronic Frontier Foundation. Throughout her career, EFF's executive director has been driven by a fundamental question: Can we still have private conversations if we live our lives online? Her new book, Privacy's Defender: My Thirty-Year Fight Against Digital Surveillance, chronicles her battles to protect our right to digital privacy. Cohn weaves her own personal story with the history of the Crypto Wars, FBI gag orders, and the post-9/11 surveillance state. She describes how she became a seasoned leader in the early digital rights movement, as well as how this work serendipitously helped her discover her birth parents and find her life partner. Along the way, she also details the development of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which she grew from a ragtag group of lawyers and hackers into “one of the most powerful digital rights organizations in the world.” Cohn will be joined by Adam Savage, former co-host of the Discovery Channel show “Mythbusters,” to talk about the issues raised in her book, EFF's work, and the emerging battle over AI surveillance. Geek Pride Day kicks off an episode packed with the kind of tips you’ll actually use. You’ll learn why Shift+Tab is your fastest escape from a runaway numbered list, how holding the lower-left CarPlay button summons Siri, and why copy/paste (and drag-and-drop) between apps still beats exporting and re-importing every time. You’ll also get the real story on Comcast’s email migration (spoiler: it’s not mandatory), discover why the Screenshot app blows past Command-Shift-5 (and -4), and figure out how to shut down the fake browser notifications hijacking your Mac. Then it’s into the meaty stuff: whether those no-name fast chargers are quietly cooking your devices, and the brands the guys actually trust to plug in without worry. Public charging stations look innocent until they aren’t, so the crew breaks down power-only cables, data blockers, and the chillingly clever O.MG Cable from Hak5: Don’t Get Caught handing a stranger the keys to your iPhone over a free USB port. You’ll get strategies for sharing organized photo libraries with the non-Mac humans in your life, dock recommendations for driving external monitors from your laptop, and a stacked Cool Stuff Found run featuring Gifski for gorgeous animated GIFs, WhatCable.uk for decoding that mystery USB-C cable in your drawer, Talk For Me v3 piping text-to-speech into FaceTime calls, and free GigSky eSIM data for Visa Signature cardholders heading abroad. JKL Media Reviews discusses The Expanse Season 2 finale, "Caliban's War," with hosts Karen, Jesse, and Lou praising its season-finale feel, character payoffs, and key set pieces. They highlight the striking Venus sequence where the Arbogast is disassembled by the protomolecule, noting Iturbe and Janice's banter and Adam Savage's cameo as the navigator, and speculate about the missing Mars ship and the moving crater. On the Mao ship, Chrisjen, Cotyar, and Bobbie navigate a standoff tied to Errinwright and Mao, with Bobbie retrieving her suit and saving the day. On the Rocinante, Prax's botanist insight helps lure and destroy the protomolecule hybrid while Holden, pinned and facing compartment syndrome, says potential goodbyes; Amos and Naomi confront their conflict. The episode ends with Naomi revealing she gave the protomolecule to Fred Johnson, threatening her relationship with Holden, while Strickland is shown on Io with May alive in a pod.

Getting access to WCW content is a bit difficult at the moment, so in the meantime, we're headed back to the movies! During the buildup to Halloween Havoc 1996 - which we'll hopefully get to soon - Hulk Hogan was busy playing aging children's martial arts show star Dave Dragon in "3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain." It was even featured on Nitro at one point - albeit in a way I suspect the filmmakers would rather it had not. As for the actual film... When a paramilitary / ninja group takes over a theme park that coincidentally happens to be the site of youngest brother Tum Tum's birthday party (attended by precisely zero of his friends), the 3 Ninjas - Rocky, Colt, and Tum Tum - fight back, accompanied by new friend Amanda, a special effects whiz (somehow, special effects prop building includes hacking, so I expect to see that on Adam Savage's "Tested" channel any day now). Can the 3 Ninjas save the park guests? Can Dave Dragon, stage show star, become a real hero and stop getting knocked out easily every other scene? Has anyone writing the hacking scenes in this movie even seen a computer before? Plus: Copying Die Hard's homework, some extremely confusing villain plans, Jim Varney - Ernest himself - manages to play a scary villain for a few minutes before it starts going as expected, and a rich dude gets humiliated for nothing more than being a rich dude. For all this and more...let's go to the movies!Music by Michael Gary Brewer at https://www.instantmusicnow.com/Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LetsGo2theRing/

Your tool set isn't just a collection of utilities — it's the environment you live in every day, and it's shaping you whether you realize it or not. In today's episode, I explore two principles that senior engineers consistently apply to their workflows, regardless of which specific tools they're using. As our industry goes through one of the most rapid periods of change in the last 20 years, the engineers who thrive won't be the ones chasing every new tool — they'll be the ones who obsess over reducing friction in the work they do most often. Honor the Grief: Many engineers are experiencing a real sense of loss as the deep cultural connections to languages, communities, and hand-written code begin to shift. Recognizing and processing that grief — rather than letting it turn into reflexive rejection of new tools — is essential to thinking clearly about what comes next. "We Shape Our Tools, Then Our Tools Shape Us": Your tools aren't neutral. A bad monitor height, a faulty keycap, or a clunky deployment process all shape you back — draining focus, breaking flow, and compounding over time. The most senior engineers treat this relationship as a first-class concern. Principle 1 — Tools Are Your Environment: There's a spectrum from "tool" to "environment," and most of what you work with sits somewhere in between. Your terminal, your desk, your claude.md file — all of these are environment. Sharpening your tools means shaping your environment, and shaping your environment is sharpening your tools. Friction Is the Lever: You don't need a dramatic overhaul to change your behavior. Tiny reductions in friction — a two-letter alias, a key binding to run tests, setting your shoes out the night before — have an outsized effect on how often you actually do the things you want to do. James Clear's Atomic Habits framework applies directly to engineering workflows. Principle 2 — First Order Thinking: Borrowed from Adam Savage's concept of "first order retrievability," the idea is simple: identify what you do most often and invest in making that better. Not faster, not just automated — better. If you do something a hundred times a day, even a small improvement compounds dramatically. Invest in the Fundamentals: Your standups, your one-on-ones, your specifications, your prompting skills — these are the repetitive, high-frequency activities where your biggest growth opportunities live. Stop assuming you've "arrived" on the basics just because nobody is giving you negative feedback. Episode Homework: Look around your workspace right now — physical and digital. Identify one thing you do repeatedly where friction is slowing you down or discouraging follow-through, and make one small change to reduce that friction today.

Reporter Rebecca Rosman takes us to one of France's favorite grocery stores—Picard—where everything is frozen. Every spring they celebrate “America Week” with concoctions such as popcorn ice cream, doughnuts made of ground-up potatoes and marshmallows in places they don't belong. Is this really what American cuisine looks like in the eyes of the French? Plus, Adam Savage of “MythBusters” fame joins us to break down his favorite food experiments, including the time he dropped an Olympic swimmer into a giant vat of syrup; J. I'm leaving open enough space at the end of each question hoping they'll download the talk and insert their answers.Missed Opportunity is a lost piece of history. Like a message in a bottle tossed out to sea. I hope to locate a destination… This week we're putting focus on my missed opportunity with Adam Savage from Myth Busters. Missed Opportunity. Together, we trace Flaw Toys' journey from Dutch toy-store summers to life in Thailand, exploring how an engineering career gave way to sculpting strange, resin-cast figures that embrace imperfection. Along the way, you'll hear about early experiments, artistic flops that became fan favorites, and why “flaws” are actually the soul of handmade art.We also get into the nuts and bolts: resin casting challenges, the high costs of toy expos, international shipping headaches, and the surprising perks of staying small and personal in a mass-produced world. Plus, a cameo mention of Adam Savage reviewing a no-face toy? That's in here too. It's insightful and packed with stories for toy collectors, artists, and anyone who's ever wondered how a passion project can take over a life.On Instagram: @flawtoysThis Episode is Sponsored by: Empire Blisters – Your go-to source for blister packaging! Zander was the executive director of The Long Now Foundation, dedicated to long term thinking. He also helped build their library, a book club for the end of the world, with all the titles we would want to rebuild civilization, if needed. He is one of the brains behind the 10,000-Year Clock, designed to tick off the years, and chime the centuries. He's now co-creating the future of the web at Automattic. He and his team are bringing a library to Black Rock City, to the World's Fair pavilion under The Man. It's a refreshing opposite. Like his theme camp inside a refrigerator truck NOT being hot, this library is about NOT being burnt. It's an ephemeral manual for civilization. We the participants will choose what books to save from burning.Zander shares stories on the effects of books, websites, and rituals, as well as Burning Man's past, present, and future. This episode is on YouTube here.rosefutures.comBRC Honoraria Art (Burning Man Journal)A group for those who want to participate (Facebook)https://longnow.orgA Pavilion for Tomorrow Today (Burning Man Journal)wikipedia.org/Clock_of_the_Long_NowKevin Kelly: Optimists Create the Future (Burning Man LIVE)Photo by Brendon Hall LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG

Hayden Christensen on stage during his panel at Comicpalooza 2025 in Houston, TX. Comicpalooza 2025 is officially wrapped up, and it was quite the weekend! In this episode, I share a full recap of my time at Houston's premier pop-culture event, filled with panels, autographs, and plenty of memorable moments. Things kicked off strong on Friday with an excellent panel featuring Hayden Christensen, where fans got a chance to hear directly from the Star Wars star about his experiences. The excitement ramped up even further on Saturday, which turned into a packed day with amazing panels featuring both Adam Savage and Patton Oswalt. Their insights and stories were highlights, making the sessions engaging and entertaining. Adding to Saturday's excitement, I was joined by my kids, Jack and Elizabeth, turning it into a fantastic family outing. Elizabeth had her heart set on getting autographs from two specific celebrities—Cheech Marin and Alan Tudyk. We managed to secure Cheech's autograph without any trouble, but the line for Alan Tudyk was overwhelming, leading us to postpone that task until Sunday. Returning on Sunday, I successfully snagged Alan Tudyk's autograph, fulfilling Elizabeth's wish and rounding out our autograph collection perfectly. The day wrapped up with stellar panels featuring Ming-Na Wen and Temuera Morrison, both of whom delivered engaging discussions and plenty of entertaining anecdotes. Highs and Lows? Later in the episode, Caroline and I dive into a thoughtful conversation about the event's overall celebrity guest lineup. We discuss whether Comicpalooza should expand their roster to better compete with bigger conventions found in nearby cities like Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and New Orleans, which tend to offer more extensive and diverse celebrity slates. We weigh the pros and cons, discussing what makes these events successful and appealing. Despite these discussions about potential improvements, my overall experience at Comicpalooza was genuinely positive. It provided plenty of fun, memorable experiences, and quality time spent with family. Listen to this episode to get all the detailed stories, insights, and our personal takes on the weekend's standout moments! Dates: June 20-22, 2025 Location: George R. #315 On this week's episode we give a recap of our participation in the Comicpalooza 2025 podcast program! Throughout the weekend, we attended panels featuring Hayden Christensen and Adam Savage. We were also honored to be part of 3 other panels where we talked about Animation, Star Wars, and podcasting. There was so much to do and see that it has become one of our favorite events each year! The first 3 episodes of Ironheart were released this week on Disney Plus. It's only just begun and you'll have to find out what we thought of it so far! Disney has announced that there will be a 5th park. No one knows what it will be but we try to give our predictions. All this and much more! Thank you for listening! Have you ever wanted to watch a movie about a sentient computer that is just a sword and sorcery fantasy film in disguise? What about an anthology movie that's more similar to a sketch film but without any of the comedy? Have you ever wondered where Adam Savage from Mythbusters got his catchphrase from? If you answered yes to any of those questions, this week's movie is for you! It's The Dungeonmaster from 1984. Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions scalemodelpodcast@gmail.com.Hi Guys,Listening to Episode 153, I want to commend for your Literature reading, the novels by Philip Kerr. He wrote a series of 13 books in which the protagonist is a German policeman: they begin during the Weimar Republic years, span the Nazi period, and continue into the post-WW II era. The writing style leans heavily towards Raymond Chandler. They are NOT for the squeamish, however, as the historical accuracy is pretty spot-on. I recommend starting with Kerr's final volume, "Metropolis", which is set historically before the rest of the books in the series. As a testament to how much I like these books, I've read the entire series TWICE!Lastly, Stuart commented, in regard to a new Eduard Bf-109 E kit, that Adolf Galland had the most aerial victories in WW II. Actually, that should have been Erich Hartmann, a German fighter pilot who served mostly, I believe, on the Russian front.Love your podcast,Dave Kensy Martin Hulst reached out from Holland! He's back and he's got a sleigh full of gift ideas for everyone on your list! Santa Paul discusses the patience and presentation needed to pull off the gift of a streaming subscription and why he may never need to buy another birthday card.
