Nobody wants to get sick on a trip, but especially if you're a frequent or long-term traveller, it's nearly inevitable. Like many mishaps when we travel, much of the time the story of how you dealt with being ill in a foreign country turns into an anecdote you regularly retell - and that's the case for the three guests on Episode 188 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast. First up, I chat with Christine Williams who has spent many years on the road - which means at some stage, illness is likely to catch up with you, and for Christine it was a case of dengue fever. Next, Liz Green talks about just why she ended up touring the many vaccination clinics of South-East Asia after a small incident in Laos. Finally, Chris Haag tells me about the time he ended up rather sick in Mexico - don't be eating while you listen! We who get to travel the world are a very privileged lot - right? If we're going to be good, thoughtful travellers, I think that considering issues of class and privilege when we travel is an important part of it. In Episode 149 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I talk with three guests who articulate some really interesting thoughts on this topic and I'm so pleased to bring them to you, and hope they give everyone some food for thought. First up, I speak with Ella Loeffler, a recently graduated ecologist who has been spending time volunteering on a sea turtle project in Malaysia. She might be young, but she has given this topic a lot of thought already and it was great to hear how she has handled it so far. I then chat to Nate Hake, a former lawyer who now travels the world as a digital nomad and has written about issues like passport privilege in the past. Finally, I talk to Chris Haag who actually proposed this whole topic in the first place. Chris is cycling the Americas from north to south and when we spoke, he was in Mexico, a destination which had given him cause to think a lot about class and privilege issues. Want to stay somewhere other than a hotel? Then Episode 138 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast is for you! I'm not a huge fan of hotels and love to stay in alternative kinds of accommodation, so I was excited to chat to my three guests in this episode about some of their favourite kinds of non-hotel accommodation. I start off with a chat with Dan Johnston who has been living in a bunch of different places around the world in recent years. Being focused on generally longer stays than the average trip, he's found lots of really creative ways to find a great place to stay. Next I talk to Kendall Simmons who reminds me that hostels can also be a great accommodation alternative, no matter how old you are - hostels are definitely not just huge dorm rooms any more! We also discussing house sitting as another really interesting way to find somewhere special to stay (and to save money doing it!). Finally I discuss accommodation with Chris Haag who has a particularly unique perspective as he and his partner are cycling from Alaska to Argentina. It turns out there are some particular ways to find accommodation unique to the long-term cycling community and it makes me ponder just what else is out there that I don't know anything about! Back in April I interviewed Sophie George and Chris Haag just before they set off for Alaska to begin their 20,000 mile, 2 year bicycle adventure starting in Homer Alaska and ending in Uswaya Argentina. The episode was called the Places I Pee. If you want to know about why I named the episode this way, or why their web site theplacesipee.com is so called, I suggest you listen to the episode. Here we are, about 6 months later and they have made it all the way from Homer to the Mexican border, via a brief layover at their home base in St George, Utah.Full disclosure listeners. I interviewed Sophie and Chris during that layover, but a few days later disaster struck. When I went to download the interview from my recording device, the file had become corrupted. I’ve tried every tool out there, to no avail.Sophie and Chris have been very understanding and have agreed to talk with me again, this time from close to the US/Mexican border in Arizona. As ever you can track their progress by going to their web site theplacesIpee.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
