'Push and Pull' is a story about slowing down and exploring the Isles of Barra and Vatersay by bike. I spent 3 nights on these islands which I had only visited once before - to travel even slower, by foot on the Hebridean Way. Yet somehow, I never felt like I did these islands justice - seeing so little of them on my hike...That's what this story is about - maximising your time on the island, while also slowing down to immerse yourself in the landscapes. We'll explore Barra and Vatersay by bike, battle the hilly roads out of Castlebay and learn about the transformations that happen at Traigh Mhor - the big beach up north on the Isle of Barra. We meet the merry dancers in the night skies and follow the road south to the beaches of Vatersay. At the end of the episode, I share my top tips for a slow adventure in Barra and Vatersay.Visit our website to find the full show notes incl. the transcript and links to places I visited on this trip.Help us spread the word about Wild for Scotland! This week we're replaying some of our favorite feline-themed episodes. In this episode from August 2019, Dean Nicholson leaves his job and started a bike trip across the world. While riding through Bosnia, he heard a “desperate meow." So, instead of riding solo, he decided the cat would come along. Plus: if a continental bike trip with a cat isn't your cup of tea, how about a boat trip with a chicken? “Those are my heroes, those guys paved the way for me to be able to travel through this country, free, and they're almost superhuman to me.” - - Erick Cedeño, Bicycle Nomad In 2013, Erick Cedeño, aka. Bicycle Nomad, came across an old photograph that changed his life. Taken in 1897, it showed 20 black soldiers riding bicycles across the American West. As he dug deeper, he learned that these were the Buffalo Soldiers, an all-black infantry regiment formed after the civil war. The photo was taken during a grueling 1,900-mile journey, in which they traveled by bike from Montana to Missouri in order to test the efficacy of the bicycle as a form of military transport. To this day, it is one of the most difficult bike trips ever undertaken. As a black man, growing up in America, Erick had never seen people that looked like him riding bikes. It changed his life, and he knew he had to bring their story back to life. But he did it not by telling it, but by living it - pedaling every mile that they did, sleeping where they slept, eating where they ate, taking the hard roads where modern paved highways do not go. And in doing so he invites us to live it too. “Curiosity drives me. It fuels my insatiable desire to know what's beyond the next bend of the road, to discover what's there beyond the edges of the map. If it is my muscles that propel me forward physically, it is curiosity that propels me mentally.” FIND ERICK CEDENO Follow all Erick's adventures at iambicyclenomad.com, Instagram: @bicycle_nomad, and Facebook:@bicyclenomad SOCIAL If you enjoy this show, please take a minute to leave a review, it makes a huge difference and enables us to keep brining these stories to you. Feeling adventurous? Come along for a ride that combines the exhilaration of an RV road trip with the intoxicating charm of Kentucky's bourbon country. From witnessing the fascinating process of bourbon-making at the Four Roses distillery to the historic explorations of Woodford, the oldest distillery in the U.S., it's a ride filled with unexpected turns and memorable moments. We sure had a chuckle at Phil Kollins whiskey recommendation, and our friends Adam and Kelly brought a wave of romance as they prepared for their wedding. As we pedaled through picturesque trails and shared light-hearted banter, we couldn't help but reminisce about our Kentucky road trip. And who knew a Dave Matthews Band and a Taylor Swift bumper sticker could incite such hilarity and reside on the same ride?Yet, amidst all the fun, we also confronted our cycling shortcomings and the importance of consistency. Whether it was debating the benefits of walking versus cycling or strategizing our rides around Mackinaw Island, we knew it was crucial to keep those pedals moving. So pull up a seat, join the ride and share in our bourbon-infused, bike-fueled escapades. Remember, it's always a great day to ride a bicycle! We announce YouTube and TicTok! After getting laid-off from her job as a college professor during the great recession a decade ago, a Minneapolis woman with a fear of bikes and strangers, takes a 420-day bike trip around the perimeter of the country with her spouse, accepting invitations to stay in the homes of strangers along the way. I met Anne Winkler-Morey at Open Streets on Franklin Avenue several weeks ago and was taken by her story. Who doesn't fantasize about leaving it all behind, escaping the political despair, facing your fears, and having an adventure? Anne is the author of Allegiance to Winds and Waters: Bridging the Political Divides of the United States. We talk about the shallow culture war politics that divide our country, the hundreds of people she met, and the conversations that convinced her our divisions are manufactured. I ask if there's anything to be learned for Minneapolis in this moment. Anne describes how common it was to be invited into strangers' homes. She talks about the physical toll, the heat stroke, biking through rain, the importance of shelter. And what we owe to each other as it relates to the commons, public spaces, and food deserts. For answers to questions like "how did her spouse's bike end up dragged under a car?" and "why did Anne toss her bike in the woods?" you'll have to read the book. From Anne's website: "Allegiance to Winds and Waters mixes the angst and hilarious misadventures of an unlikely bicyclist, poignant stories of the strangers she meets, and acute observations of a historian and social activist." -https://annwinklermorey.com Anne is also the founder of the Minneapolis Interview Project: https://turtleroad.org/ Watch: https://youtube.com/wedgelive Join the conversation: https://twitter.com/wedgelive Support the show: https://patreon.com/wedgelive Wedge LIVE theme song by Anthony Kasper x LaFontsee

Nate sits down with myself along with friend Nick Jones to talk about a 16,000 mile journey on the road… with only a bike. This guy started in his back yard in Minnesota, went all the way to Alaska, flew his bike and himself to Seattle and from there he biked down to Panama City, Panama then went back to Alaska to Salmon fish… Along the way, Nate endured all different types of weather, met many new faces, encountered a bear?!?!? + much much more! Safe to say he saw/experienced a bunch of really cool stuff.

What's the biggest bike trip you've done? Whether it's a few hours or a few days, it likely doesn't compare to the epic bike ride of Freddie Gillies. Alongside his brother and two friends, they cycled 23,000 kilometres, from Bali to Buckingham Palace in 2017. Passing through more than twenty countries, they battled extreme heat, sub-zero temperatures, injury, illness and heartbreak... and had the time of their lives. And in doing so, they also raised almost $35,000 in support of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Freddie has now published a book, The Big Bike Trip. It's filled with stunning photography by his friend Sean Wakely and Freddie's inspirational account of turning a dream into reality.

An diesem 2. Ihr seid bei On the Way to New Work heute mit Nono Konopka.
Meditation, Coaching & Life / Der Podcast mit Michael "Curse" Kurth
In 2014, Durrell Hood decided to go for a bike ride . . . across the country. He had to carry all of his supplies on his bicycle. He had to find new supplies and shelter along the way. He had some amazing adventures and met some caring, interesting people during this adventure. In this time of so much division in our country, hearing the stories of strangers who helped Durrell during his journey can restore some of your faith in our fellow humans. He continues to embark on remarkable adventures, and will inspire you and entertain you with some of his tales. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wendy-green9/support

This weeks guest is retired Physician Lothar Schaefer. Lothar was born in the Northwest Territories where he had an Igloo to play in as a child. He would later go back there to work and solidify his love of the outdoors. Wanting to do his part for the Climate crisis Lothar swore off flight trave. He and his girlfriend Debbie decided to do a trip of the americas on recumbent bicycles. The trip ended up taking over four years to complete and went from the west coast of Canada to the east, down through the eastern seaboard, back across the southern states, into Mexico and Central America, then to the tip of south America going down the west coast and back up on the east.In this episode we talk about going through Patagonia, the Andes, the jungle, the challenges you face on a trip like that, the people they met, what it's like being in a relationship on a challenging adventure and the effects of climate change that they saw first hand. Lothar is a great role model for adventures and environmentalists. This is a great listen to get you inspired to go on your own adventures, do your own exploration and have your own personal growth.
We have a slightly different type of episode for this week . Instead of talking about current events and things happening around the gym we’re going back in time like Bill and Ted to the summer of 1996. This was a summer where Bernie decided that Mike and I didn’t do nearly enough biking or bonding together and what we really needed was a 2-week camping/biking expedition between Vermont and Canada. In hindsight this was an amazing experience and it also happens to be when Mikey got hit by a car.

My goal is for you to enjoy every detail of every trip I send you on. At first you might not feel super comfortable with today’s amazing trip, but hang in there and see what you think by the end. This amazing vacation is a Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park bike trip. Remember that freedom you felt riding a bike as a little kid, with the wind and the world flying by as you pedaled along? Imagine that same sense of freedom, being surrounded by magnificent red rock formations. What kind of bikes are available? On the trip, your bike and helmet, equipment, maintenance and upkeep are all included. There are several bike types to choose from. If you’re comfortable with a road bike, there are two options: a lightweight titanium performance road bike, and an upgraded carbon bike. The next option is a touring bike (which I call a hybrid), with higher handlebars and more comfy seat than a road bike. The third option is an e-bike. Electric bikes are amazing—they allow you to use as much or as little of your own effort into biking as you want. You can let the bike do all the work, or you can turn off the electronics and have the full-effort experience. The last bike option is a tandem bike. If you’re going with someone, this is how you can truly share the bike experience! What’s included in the trip?Lots of meals! You’ll get all of your breakfasts, 6 lunches (which is all of them), and 4 dinners. You’ll have trip leaders with you who will bring snacks and beverages. Guides are included so you can make the most of your trip. Vans accompany you the entire way, so anytime you feel like riding in the van rather than on the bike you can. Hotel stays, gratuities for hotels and meals, transportation, and park entry fees are all included.Where does it go?The trip begins and ends in St. George, Utah. You spend one night at the Inn at Entrada in St. George, 2 nights at the Lodge at Bryce Canyon, and see Cedar Breaks National Monument, Bryce Canyon, Rainbow Point, and do a little hiking.Your next two nights are spent at the Cable Mountain Lodge in Springdale, just outside of Zion’s National Park. On these days you can pedal through Red Canyon, the Elkhart cliffs, and Checkerboard Mesa. Cool off in the hotel pool or relax in the hot tub, and enjoy walks and hikes past emerald pools and red rock beauty.Who should go?This trip is perfect for couples, friends, groups, or solo travelers. You’re with a small group of people who become great friends along the way. It’s also great for older teens and 20’s. if you have a multi-generation family which includes teenagers, this would be perfect. This trip is also ideal for private groups. If you have a company group, a family, or a friends’ group who would love something like this, let me know. The private group times are the first to sell out. When does it run?On average, there are 1-2 departure dates per month throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Come see more itineraries at https://www.suitedreamstravel.net/

Episode 9 features a visit to the Abandoned Turnpike near Breezewood interchange on the PA Turnpike. This 13 mile section was abandoned in 1968 when three tunnels and a service plaza were bypassed. The property is closed to the public but bikes are welcome and you ride at your own risk! The Sideling Hill tunnel is 6800+' long, that's a mile and a quarter! The tunnels are dark, wet, debris is everywhere, including chunks of concrete from the ceiling. If you're going to ride these tunnels, you will need a good and bright bike light. We recommend a headlight as well. And use extreme caution. There are pictures of our ride on our website. (steelcitycycologist.com) Equip your bike with durable tires for this adventure. The surface is very challenging. This make a nice day trip. Get off the PA Turnpike at Breezewood and take Route 30 down a small hill. We used the triangular shaped parking area. Then up the dirt path and you're on the abandoned turnpike. If you ride it, let us know about your experience. Have fun.

Join me, won't you, on an action-packed cross country bicycle trip that I undertook a few short decades ago, in the America of the late 1980s. Weren't those glorious times? What with the Cold War, the Reagan presidency gracefully pirouetting into the Bush presidency, Iran-Contra, Oliver North, revered statesman Dan Quayle, precious baby Jessica falling into that darn well, the "War on Drugs," Exxon Valdez, Lyle and Erik Menendez, that kooky Berlin Wall. We'll talk about none of that, but perhaps we'll see what we're made of, all of us. Or, you know, not. Anything can happen.

As part of a cycling journey across Canada, Former Queen's University football star, Curtis Carmichael, will be taking off from Vancouver. Curtis is cycling across the country, as part of a 3,300 km journey, and is seeking donations in support of urban youth that are growing up in under-resourced communities. Curtis' stated goal is to raise more than $150,000 as part of his tour, which starts Monday, July 10th in Vancouver, BC, and is scheduled to conclude Saturday, August 12th, in Halifax, NS. A former CFL prospect, Curtis grew up in community housing in Toronto, eventually realizing his dreams and playing Wide Receiver on a partial athletic and partial academic scholarship for Queen's University in the CIS. As part of that team, he won prestigious the Russ Jackson Award, which is presented annually to the football player in Canada best exemplifying the attributes of academic achievement, football skill and citizenship. After college, he passed on the opportunity to play professionally and is now studying to become a teacher to serve marginalized communities. As part of the trip, he hopes to speak with thousands of Canadians about his experiences living in government housing, and looking to impress upon them the importance of society's long-term relational investment in the lives of children and youth.
