#WorkforceWednesday: Remote Work and Religion: New Legal Risks for Employers in 2025

Employment Law This Week Podcast

As religious rights in the workplace gain new attention, a recent OPM memo broadening religious accommodations for federal employees could impact employers everywhere—at home and in the office. Essential Impacts for Employers: The federal memo expands religious accommodations, including remote work. The Supreme Court's 2023 Groff v. DeJoy ruling raised the “undue hardship” standard, making it more difficult for employers to deny religious accommodation requests. Accommodation requests are increasing, intersecting with remote work. These developments create new compliance challenges and potential legal risks for employers in the public and private sectors. Epstein Becker Green attorney Nancy Gunzenhauser Popper explains how to evaluate accommodation requests under the heightened standard and what the new federal memo could mean for your organization. Interviewees: Justin Bullock, MD, MPH; Cary Payne, MD Interviewer: Lisa Meeks, PhD, MA Description: In Episode 114, Dr. Lisa Meeks talks with Dr. Justin Bullock (nephrology fellow, University of Washington; living with bipolar disorder) and Dr. Cary Payne (Program Director, Nephrology Fellowship, University of Washington) about navigating fellowship with a psychiatric disability—and how trust, humility, and creative flexibility built a training experience defined by healing and growth. Together, they retrace Justin's decision to pursue fellowship after a traumatic residency, his choice to lead with authenticity during the match, and the risks and rewards of disclosure in GME. They unpack how structured accommodations provided protection, why early defensiveness softened into trust, and the profound impact of Cary's disarming leadership approach: “It's not your job to teach us.” Listeners will hear advice for residents and fellows (consider strategic disclosure, seek accommodations as protective, build trusted provider teams) and for program directors (lead with humility, embrace uncertainty, and center accommodations in creativity rather than dogma). At its heart, the episode explores how one program became not just a safe space, but a place of healing—and why that benefits trainees, programs, and patients alike. This episode accompanies the open-access perspective This Armor of Mine: Perspectives of a Bipolar Physician and Program Director (Bullock & Payne, Chest, 2024) This episode is part of the ACGME/DWDI Disability Resource Hub, supported by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Catalyst Award, it's a powerful reminder that access isn't accidental—it's built intentionally, one relationship at a time. Together, they trace Tom's match-day disclosure strategy and “find-your-people” approach, an accessibility walk-through with tape measures and ADA checks, and the practical creativity of equivalent rotations when sites differ in accessibility. The Clare Immigrant Support Network says any plans to charge working asylum seekers for their accommodation must be assessed on a case by case basis. The Government is reportedly considering plans to charge asylum seekers with jobs up to €238 per week to live in IPAS centres to combat rising costs. There are currently 992 International Protection Applicants living across 12 centres in Clare. Clare Immigrant Support Network Manager Simon O'Treasaigh has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that many migrants are in casual employment and insists a one-size fits all approach cannot be applied.

Interviewees: Dr. Uyen Troung, and Dr. Nalinda Charnsangavej  Interviewer: Dr. Lisa Meeks Description: What does it take to create true accessibility in residency training? In this episode, Dr. Lisa Meeks is joined by Dr. Uyen Truong, Chief Resident at the UT-Austin Dell Medical School Pediatric Residency Program, and Dr. Nalinda Charnsangavej, the program's Director, for a candid conversation about disability inclusion in graduate medical education. Together, they share the story behind Dr. Truong's residency journey as a wheelchair user—from early planning and proactive accommodations to the team-wide commitment that made access possible. Listeners will hear how trust, open communication, and creative problem-solving helped dismantle barriers, and how the presence of physicians with disabilities strengthens patient care, especially for disabled children and their families. The discussion also dives into the practical side of accommodations in GME: what an access assistant does (and doesn't do), how to navigate procedural requirements, and the role of accrediting bodies like the ACGME and the American Board of Pediatrics in supporting inclusive training. This episode is part of the Disability Resource Hub series, made possible by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Catalyst Award for Transformation in Graduate Medical Education, and offers valuable insights for program directors, residents, and anyone committed to building equitable clinical learning environments. Following graduation, Uyen is going to work as a Complex Care Pediatrician back in Minnesota. Although the path has not been easy, she has always wanted to become a pediatrician and work with kids with medical complexity like herself. Through Uyen%E2%80%99s training and her own personal experiences, she has been able to help parents and children navigate the medical system. Uyen is very excited to continue working and advocating for children with disabilities and helping them achieve their goals. Nalinda Charnsangavej, MD is an associate professor of pediatrics at the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin. She serves as the pediatric residency program director and has an interest in promoting a healthy and supportive learning environment through supporting diversity, cultivating an inclusive climate, and promoting physician well-being and resilience. She has a specific interest in raising awareness of the benefits of inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the learning environment and patient care and has supported faculty and institution development in working with trainees with disabilities. In her role as a program director, she has individually mentored many trainees and also recognizes the need to support the establishment of strong mentorship relationships for trainees, particularly those from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine. She has led program-wide efforts to foster wellbeing and resiliency amongst trainees and participates in national work-groups such as the Pediatric Resident Burnout and Resilience Study Consortium. She is interested in helping develop best practices for GME programs to enhance access and inclusion of trainees with disabilities. Tiffany Falzon has worn her fair share of hats in her almost 37 years. With a professional background in accounting, Tiff was in Sydney when she first donned her hosting crown, opening a glamping tent on a block of land owned by her Dad in her home town of Marion Bay on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula and opting to manage it from afar. After the incredible initial success of the tent, Tiff eventually decided to move home and manage the tent herself and - once again with her industrious and resourceful Dad in tow - build from scratch property number 2, a tiny home. In the years following, Tiff went on to meet her now partner Luke and welcome a son, Tasman, with Luke stepping in to help with the business through the challenging initial years of Covid and beyond. Most recently, Tiff, Luke and their extended team have opened property number 3, a sprawling retreat of warm timbers, enticing outdoor nooks and calming indoor zones they very appropriately named 'The Sanctuary'. Now known as Bayside Glamping & Co, Tiff has over the past 8 years created something very special that draws on the richness of her local community with a great deal of pride. Please enjoy this terrific conversation about her journey today.   For more information about Hosting With Heart and to access our archive of over 100 episodes, visit the HWH website at www.hostingwithheart.net.au or follow us on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/hostingwithheart Join our private Facebook group of 1300+ hosts from around Australia at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hostingwithheart/ Sign up and list your property on Heartful now at https://heartful.travel/host

Thanks for finding our podcast! We are a family of 5 who does most of our travel using credit card points and miles and we share how we leverage credit card offers to earn a ton of points/miles so we can afford travel as a larger family.Follow us on Instagram @TravelPartyof5The towering sequoias of Mariposa Grove, the refreshing mist from Bridal Veil Falls, and the unexpected joy of watching our typically reserved 11-year-old exclaim "This is amazing!" – our family adventure to Yosemite National Park delivered all this and more. Our road trip strategy began with renting a hybrid minivan for the 2,000-mile journey, earning American Airlines miles while saving our personal vehicle from mountain roads and inevitable snack debris. After an overnight at the Holiday Inn Express in Oakhurst (booked with an IHG free night certificate), we kicked off our Yosemite exploration with the Valley Floor Tour – a perfect introduction that provided fascinating insights into the park's history and ecology, including how indigenous fire management practices were disrupted by European settlers. For families considering Yosemite with young children, we discovered some perfect trails: Lower Yosemite Falls offers an easy walk with spectacular views, while Bridal Veil Falls rewards visitors with cooling mist after a short hike. The more ambitious Mariposa Grove trail showcased magnificent giant sequoias but required multiple breaks to manage the heat and terrain with our little ones. One unexpected highlight? Encountering a rattlesnake – though we had hoped for bears and deer during our visit!Accommodation was a crucial part of our experience. Rush Creek Lodge, located just minutes from the west entrance (though still a 45-minute drive to the valley floor), proved worth every penny of its $538 nightly rate. The resort offered heated pools, zip lines, game rooms, nightly s'mores, and endless activities that kept our kids entertained from sunrise to sunset. Even without televisions in the rooms, we connected as a family through board games and outdoor adventures. Our biggest tips? Map your route carefully to minimize backtracking on winding mountain roads, prepare for motion sickness with Dramamine (administered a full hour before departure), and check multiple weather sources before packing – we brought cold-weather gear for forecasted 60-degree days but encountered 90-degree heat instead!Looking to create your own Yosemite memories?
