We kick off this episode with a write-in discussion on the recent Microsoft layoffs and game cancellations, including the uncertainty around projects like Perfect Dark. It's a tough conversation about the state of Xbox, studios, and what this means for players moving forward. In this episode of Game Pass or Pass, we dive in deep on the remaster's biggest questions:Skating remade, but gospel intact: How Iron Galaxy rebuilt classic parks in stunning 4K, added new levels like Waterpark, Pinball, and Movie Studio, and expanded Create-A-Park tools—without losing that signature two-minute trick combo rush.More than nostalgia: New game modes—including New Game+—cross-platform multiplayer for up to eight players, fresh unlockables, and enhanced creation tools give it surprisingly lasting appeal.Trick-filled surprises: Guest skaters like TMNT's Michelangelo are finally playable, alongside the Doom Slayer and modern pros like Riley Hawk—Tony's real-life son, now skating in-game and making his mark in the family legacy. What fans are saying: Critics praise its faithful feel and presentation, although some note that THPS 4's original open-ended career design was simplified back into traditional level progression.Does Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 stand as the skater's rightful return, or does it skate by on nostalgia alone? Tune in to hear our full breakdown of how this remaster rides the line between reverence and reinvention.
Paul Weller has just covered it on his new album. Morrissey played it to Noel Gallagher who took the idea and ran with it. What explains the enduring appeal of a record that stalled at number 22 all those years ago? Actor/musician Brian Protheroe doesn't know but he's certainly grateful that it's being reissued once again. His story takes us back to:…the days when young musicians hitch-hiked to London…the way the sun shone on the day “Sgt Pepper” came out…when Soho was a village and an out of work actor could afford to live in Covent Garden…when being dumped by a girl could inspire that actor to diarise his daily routine…when the jazzman who played the solo on the record couldn't remember it for “TOTP”…how it feels to take your grandson to Abbey Road to watch your album being remastered.Pre-order the Chrysalis Red reissue of the first Brian Protheroe album: https://brianprotheroe.lnk.to/PNBFind out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Hosted on Acast. In this episode, we're diving into the world of pinball leaks, do you love 'em, hate 'em, or do they totally ruin the surprise and excitement for you? I'll be sharing my take, and yeah… probably going off on a few tangents along the way. After working on the Harry Potter project with Jersey Jack Pinball, I've got a new perspective on leaks that I'll open up about too. Do leaks actually hurt anyone, or is it just harmless fun? We'll get into all of that and more, right here on this episode of The Flipside Podcast!

✦ If you're looking for your next much-needed laugh, Atlanta comedian Joel Byars has plenty of them ready for you at his "Funny Fridays" comedy showcase. The next event in the series is scheduled for August 22 at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center and will feature performances by Lace Larrabee, Carlos Rodriguez, and Emily Holden. Byars recently joined WABE arts reporter Summer Evans to talk more about why he's committed to making our Fridays funny. ✦ Last May, when the pizzeria-arcade chain Chuck E. Cheese announced plans to retire its famous animatronic bands, the backlash was swift. After hearing this outcry, the company promised to keep a few of the bands across the nation. You may be surprised to hear that there was an outcry over Animatronics, but the art form, which brings mechanical and electronic figures to life, continues to hold the public's attention. In fact, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts offers a graduate concentration in Animatronics. It's true. If you're a fan of life-like, magical, moving figures with Dead Eyes (Jon's words, not mine), you don't have to travel far to get your fix. City Lights Collective member Wesley Boutilier brings us the story of a Six Flags Over Georgia ride that recently underwent a significant animatronic upgrade. ✦ Local artist Carl Janes knows that making art isn't a solo effort—it's as much about community as it is about creativity. Over the years, he has helped carve out spaces for Atlanta's local music and arts communities to gather, perform, and thrive—including his former East Atlanta home, The Secret Spot, and more recently, his location in Underground, called Inner Space. For his latest endeavor, he has teamed up with local brewery Halfway Crooks to curate a diverse Summer Sunday Concert series, which will run throughout August. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane recently sat down with Janes learn why he's bringing his Inner Space outdoors. ✦ City Lights Collective member Shane Harrison spends his days at Arts ATL looking for cultural events to share with readers, and he joins us weekly to share highlights. Today, his mix includes Black Writers Weekend 2025, and True Colors Theatre Company's adaptation of Jordan E. Cooper's Ain’t No Mo’. ✦ Artist and music enthusiast, Kosmo Vinyl. He spent several decades immersed in music and began his professional career at London's pioneering indie label, "Stiff Records." In 1979, Kosmo started working exclusively with "The Clash" and stayed by their side until the punk icons disbanded in 1986. Over the years, Kosmo's record collection became legendary. In 2014, he began posting about his favorite releases on social media as part of his series, "Kosmo's Vinyl of the Week," and he joins us weekly to share the stories behind the records he treasures. Today, Kosmo discusses the story behind Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” ✦ The game of Pinball has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last decade, and for those who love the game, August 1 is considered National Pinball Day. City Lights Collective co-host Kim Drobes brings us the story behind the celebration.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Topic begins at 7:35 Episode Summary: In the third part of our Pinball Downunder series, we look at Homepin. Homepin was established in 2013 and was born from the hobby business of Mike Kalinowski. It seems like a really smart idea to set up manufacturing in the world's largest manufacturing country, China, but it turns out to be a mixed bag. Ron and Dave play it as straight as the possibility can from a manufacturer who struggled out of the gate, overcame some very difficult situations, knows a theme is a must, understands costs are king, and whose owner went on a podcast charm offensive, which was more offensive than charming for the pinball community. It's not often we get a series of new game launches in the summer months, but in this month's Pinball Industry News PINcast, Jonathan from Pinball Magazine and Martin from Pinball News cover three more new releases in June. Two weeks ago, they brought you a special bonus PINcast interview with Daniel Janson of Pinball Brothers, but now it's time to look back on the launch and the subsequent new details and gameplay videos for Predator pinball. The second new game came out-of-the-blue, as Pedretti revealed their Ligabue Pinball Game. Themed around the very popular Italian rock band Ligabue and aimed at the Italian market, the machine has all-new artwork but a familiar playfield design. The third new game hasn't actually been released yet, but the details known so far certainly sound intriguing. Steelbound is the latest title from For Amusement Only Games for the P3 pinball platform. I'll be at the Southern-Fried Gaming Expo speaking on a panel about obscure games and hosting a panel with video game voice actors! A PSA if you have a Nintendo Switch 2 - update your controllers firmware! There is a firmware update and the console does NOT automatically update your controllers. The Switch 2 is now officially Nintendo's fastest selling device, and is most likely the fastest selling video game console ever. The SAG-AFTRA voice actors strike over AI protections has been suspended, which means voice actors are now returning to work. Then we take suggestions from chat about obscure video games that you might have missed, none of which we actually used in the presentation, but it was good hearing them!
On this episode, the crew discusses profanity in games and when it becomes more a distraction. Our whole podcast is basically centered around the importance of pinball being put on location, but this episode in particular is a love letter to on location pinball ...with swearing.Support the show
Pinball: We spend most of this segment going over our thoughts on Pinball Brother's revealed Predator Pinball. We also talk about the AI scandal surrounding JJP's Harry Potter, our thoughts on Stern's code release states, and how we would retheme a host of existing pinball machines. Video Games: We talk about the Xbox games showcase, a change in leadership (sort of) for Embracer Group, the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, and Borderlands 4 pricing. For whatever reason this seems to be a minority opinion in the modern era, even though we set out to prove that pinball was always supposed to be hard, and that challenging games are way more fun in the long run.Obligatory naughty language warning. Since we published our previous episode, Sony not only announced it was having a State of Play event, but that event has already happened. Thus, we have much to discuss throughout this lengthy episode, an unexpected surprise for the PlayStation faithful. In short, the most recent State of Play was a great showcase of nearly 30 upcoming PlayStation 5 games, with some PS4 and PSVR2 mixed in there, too. And -- for those that care -- more than a half-dozen of the games are PS5 console exclusive, nipping that entire argument in the bud. In the realm of Sony second party, we've learned about a Marvel-themed fighting game from Arc System Works called Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, while Tecmo Koei's Team Ninja is hard at work on Nioh 3. Elsewhere, we were given the first glimpse at IO Interactive's long-in-development James Bond game called First Light, a brand-new Lumines offering from the creators of Tetris Effect, the return of Capcom's seemingly-beleaguered Pragmata, something fresh from Grasshopper Manufacture called Romeo Is A Dead Man, a late-September release date for Silent Hill F, our first look at the sequel to Iga's Bloodstained, and -- yes indeed! -- confirmation of Final Fantasy Tactics coming to PlayStation in just a few months in the form of The Ivalice Chronicles. "No games?" Maybe if you don't like or play video games, perhaps. Other news this week includes our first look at Witcher 4 via a controversial UE5 tech demo, rumors of a native PS5 port for Red Dead Redemption 2, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Should 'game length' be considered a spoiler? How do we feel about pinball video games? Do we ever mess with the PSN's 'activity cards' while playing? What started out as a short article quickly grew wider in scope, and eventually I just felt like it would make a better podcast episode rather than an article. If you like this episode and want to hear Pinball Econ 102, 103, or 104 in the future, reach out to me on the discord channel and let me know.
