The guest on this episode of The Back of the Range is Matt Vogt, a dentist and accomplished mid-amateur golfer who earned one of the most memorable stories in 2025: qualifying for and competing in the U.S. Open at Oakmont. The conversation covers Vogt’s journey from a modest upbringing in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, to his college golf days at Butler University, and his later-life resurgence into competitive amateur golf. He recounts his U.S. Open Qualifying experience, the emotional significance of his late father during that run, and the whirlwind aftermath of suddenly finding himself part of golf’s biggest stage. Vogt offers candid reflections on balancing a demanding professional career in dentistry with elite-level amateur competition, sharing how he relies on supportive colleagues and flexible scheduling to make it work. He opens up about nerves, lessons learned, and the surreal experience of teeing off at Oakmont in front of thousands—a moment where adrenaline met disbelief. The discussion also touches on broader themes in amateur golf: the evolution of college recruiting, the rising standard of competition, the mid-amateur “fraternity,” and the ongoing debate about reinstated former professionals competing in mid-am events. The conversation ends lightheartedly, with banter about future tournaments like the Gasparilla Invitational and the Jones Cup, showing Vogt’s grounded personality and enthusiasm for competing with his peers. What does it really take to win when everything falls apart? Inspired by a conversation with regular caller RLS about military mental conditioning, Ryan explores the psychological gap between good teams and championship teams, and why talent alone will never be enough. The injury report has ballooned to 20 players, with Jordan Love still in concussion protocol and Malik Willis expected to be ready if needed. But beyond the medical updates, this episode dives deep into the philosophy of elite performance. Drawing from books by Bill Walsh, Tim Grover, George Leonard, and Bill Parcells, Ryan examines why some players crumble under pressure while others thrive. The NFL's structure actually works against building mentally tough teams, and the bare minimum requirements for players are shockingly light compared to the psychotic obsession that defines true greatness. From Kobe Bryant's 4am workouts to Aaron Donald's unwavering consistency, the blueprint is clear for those willing to follow it. Merry Christmas Eve, Packers fans. The use of saunas is exploding in popularity in the US, but they've been a standard part of life in other parts of the world. Finland is the best example, with more than one sauna for every 2 people! What frequency, duration and temperature are recommended for better health & wellbeing? How about for athletic performance? What's the difference between infrared and traditional saunas? Today's guest, Dr. Daniel Gagnon is a thermal physiologist who has been studying the effects of heat exposure on human health & performance for over 2 decades! Kate Allgood's evolution from elite Canadian hockey player to mental performance coach reveals a transformative understanding of how identity, resilience, and self-trust form the foundation of sustained excellence across all high-performance domains. Her critical insight distinguishes between confidence—a volatile feeling that fluctuates with circumstances—and self-trust, a stable internal anchor that persists regardless of results. She teaches that the stories individuals tell themselves function as self-fulfilling prophecies shaping outcomes more powerfully than external circumstances. Through her work with athletes, military personnel, and business professionals, Kate discovered that high performance demands transcend athletics, requiring identical psychological skills across all result-oriented, high-pressure environments. The sustainability of high performance depends fundamentally on self-regulation, which Kate treats with the same seriousness as elite physical training. She maintains consistent meditation, regular exercise, and prioritizes sleep as non-negotiable foundations for sustained cognitive capacity and creativity. Her entrepreneurial journey demonstrates that building a thriving practice requires cultivating curiosity about every dimension of business operations. Rather than viewing necessary but unpreferred tasks with resistance, she reframes them through genuine curiosity, transforming the psychological experience entirely. The techniques she developed nearly two decades ago—meditation, breathwork, mindfulness, and narrative reconstruction—remain remarkably stable in their core, proving that fundamental mechanisms for performing under pressure transcend changing business landscapes. Kate's mantra breathe and observe encapsulates her approach to psychological resilience, offering a simple yet profound practice accessible to anyone facing chaos or overwhelming emotions. By creating space between stimulus and response through conscious breathing and observer perspective, people access the choice point where genuine transformation becomes possible. Her commitment to leading by example and continuously working on herself reflects her understanding that a coach can only take clients to the level the coach has already reached. Check out her book The Athlete Within and visit her website to explore how her personalized assessments and tailored coaching programs can guide your transformation toward sustainable excellence and authentic self-trust. In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with Mike Barefoot to unpack how movement builds more than muscles. It builds discipline, mindset, emotional regulation, and leadership performance. Mike shares why physical outlets like martial arts, workouts, walking, and simple daily activity help professionals vent stress without torching relationships at work. They also break down the real hack most people miss. Consistency beats intensity, and incremental progress turns fitness into a lifestyle instead of a short-term grind. If you want better focus, less burnout, and stronger decision-making, this conversation links fitness and mental health in a way that's practical and repeatable. About the Guest: Mike Barefoot has spent 27+ years in the staffing industry, placing 1,000+ professionals, generating $50M+ in revenue, and earning top awards like Rookie of the Year, Performer of the Year, and multiple Presidents Club honors. He is also a 37-year martial arts practitioner, a 7th degree black belt in karate, plus advanced ranks in jujitsu and kickboxing, and a multi-time Hall of Fame inductee. Mike speaks to MBA students, executives, and entrepreneurs on performance, balance, and sustainable excellence. Key Takeaways: Physical outlets reduce stress spillover. Training gives you a clean place to “dump pressure” so you show up calmer at work and at home. Balance is a performance strategy, not a luxury. When energy is distributed across life areas, productivity and resilience improve. Compete with yourself, not the room. Self-accountability creates consistent growth without chasing external validation. Perfection in results is rare. “Perfect intent” means daily effort aligned to your goals even when outcomes vary. Set incremental targets. Instead of chasing 50 pounds or 2-hour workouts, aim for small wins like 10 to 15 minutes daily. Avoid the “ready, set, stop” trap in business. Delays and hurdles happen. Use movement to prevent frustration from damaging relationships. Momentum matters. An object in motion tends to stay in motion. Small action keeps you progressing. Use micro-journaling. Track activity on a mini calendar or your phone so your brain can't inflate effort. Limited time can improve focus. Small windows force sharper training and sharper studying, especially for young professionals. Movement upgrades decision-making. More energy and clarity leads to better choices and less burnout over time. How Listeners Can Connect With Mike: Email: LinkedIn Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? We sat down with Travis Davidson from Team Sports Consulting Group to unpack how a simple five‑minute survey can transform culture, reveal real leaders, and help coaches read stress before it derails a game. From high school diamonds to College World Series runs, Travis shows how relational science turns “culture” from a buzzword into a repeatable system you can coach. We dig into the four core traits that shape how players think, lead, and learn—and how those patterns show up under pressure. You'll hear how to stop forcing your best hitter into a role he hates, use side‑by‑side profiles to resolve coach–player conflicts, and set your team's environment on purpose: locker pods, bus assignments, even hotel routines that preserve energy for the moments that decide seasons. Catchers get a special spotlight as we explore pitcher–catcher scans that equip them to spot backup styles, slow the game down, and anchor tempo when the count and crowd tilt against you.Travis also challenges a myth: there's no single personality that makes a great coach. The real separator is self‑awareness. Whether you lean gut or analytics, the edge comes from knowing your style, speaking in each player's language, and building a shared map of how your team works. With clear pricing designed for high schools and a no‑risk offer for head coaches, the path from guesswork to clarity is closer than you think.Ready to turn communication into a competitive advantage? Send us a textIn this episode of the Colorado High School Basketball Podcast, host Matt Langley interviews former high school and college basketball player Caydrick Bloomquist to explore how high school basketball develops mental toughness, resilience, and elite performance skills that transfer to life after sports.Caydrick grew up in Emporia, Kansas in a basketball culture built on the xitZone mentality—a philosophy focused on pushing beyond comfort zones, performing under fatigue, and building discipline through accountability. That mindset helped shape his journey from high school basketball to college athletics, becoming an All-American pole vaulter, and later working in sports performance, mindset training, and human performance consulting with Olympians, tactical athletes, and military populations. This episode discusses:How high school basketball builds mental toughness and resilienceThe XitZone philosophy and its seven core principlesWhy learning to perform while fatigued creates a competitive edgeHow mindset training improves confidence, focus, and consistencyLessons from basketball that apply to school, careers, and life challengesWhy today's athletes must train their mindset as much as their physical skillsPerfect for high school basketball players, coaches, parents, trainers, and educators, this episode explains why basketball is one of the best tools for developing work ethic, leadership, emotional control, and long-term success—both on and off the court. Here is the link to reserve your spot for the 1-hour xitzone workshophttps://forms.gle/h2m7gSx3jd6vyGu46Support the showfor more follow @bball_co on twitter or visit BasketballColorado.com

In this episode, I answer a great question from listener (and She Runs Ultras member) Kierstin:How do you train mental toughness and resiliency when the moments you need it don't show up until 12+ hours into a race? And how do you practice that in everyday life without recreating 20 hours of race fatigue? Here's the truth: you're practicing mental toughness 24/7, whether you realize it or not. It doesn't start with huge, heroic efforts. It starts with the small, uncomfortable, inconvenient stuff you'd rather avoid.Inside the episode, we cover:Why mental toughness is built the same way strength training is — light weight first, then load. How “small annoyances” are actually prime training reps for mental resilience. Why skipping straight to the big challenges leaves you vulnerable to the small ones that derail races.Real examples of micro-challenges you can start using today:stretching after a run, running the hill you hate, waking up early, joining the back of the pack, choosing the rocky trail, etc.How to make a simple “uncomfortable list” and use it as a training progression from small → big.The real battle: the mental chatter that shows up before you even start the task. Why your self-talk before, during, and after these moments matters just as much as the action itself.A reminder that on race day, curveballs will happen — and these daily reps are what prepare you to meet them instead of fold.I also talk about Episode 90 — Believe Hard, and why believing in your future self (yes, even irrationally at times) is a huge part of developing resilience. If you want mental toughness to show up for you on race day, now is the time to start practicing — with the small stuff first.Enjoy this episode — and start training your mind just as intentionally as your miles.⭐️ GET THE FREE ULTIMATE 50K TRAINING TOOLKIT
Mental Toughness isn't gritting your teeth. It's staying present under pressure. In this episode, we dismantle the old, fear-based definition of mental toughness and introduce Mental Toughness 2.0 — the capacity to remain relaxed, creative, and fully engaged when the environment demands more of you. You'll learn: • Why "trying harder" can lock you out of your zone • How nervous system regulation determines performance • The difference between contraction vs. presence • Why acceptance unlocks creativity and staying power • How willpower is best used to create presence, not force This is mental toughness redefined — sustainable, embodied, and authentic.

Send us a textEver catch yourself saying, “I'll be happy when I hit the goal”? Let's break that loop. We dive into gratitude as a performance tool, not a consolation prize—how to be proud of the work you're doing now while still chasing the next level. I walk through the mindset shift from delayed happiness to daily appreciation, and why that shift keeps you grounded, motivated, and hard to burn out.We explore the moving goalpost problem: ambition expands your targets, which is healthy, but only if your gratitude expands too. I share personal stories from opening a gym to pursuing franchises, and how respecting the struggle made the wins mean more. You'll hear how to reframe imposter syndrome by becoming living proof for those a few steps behind, and why specific, timely thanks to your “home team” and work team creates a powerful ripple effect. We talk simple scripts for acknowledging support, recognizing invisible privileges of progress, and using feedback—good or bad—to sharpen your edge. The fire metaphor runs through the episode: each new level has its own heat, and fewer people choose to walk through it. That's your advantage. Learn how to read the current season with perspective, audit the actions and inactions that built your present results, and draw a clear line between wanting more and doing the work that makes more inevitable. Gratitude in the grind won't make you complacent; it gives you the capacity to carry bigger goals without losing yourself. If this resonated, tap follow, share it with someone who's in the thick of it, and leave a quick review with one thing you're grateful for today. Send us a textWinning can be the start of the slide. After a deep run or a title, the real threat isn't on your schedule—it's in your clubhouse. We unpack how complacency takes root during the quiet months and map out a hard-nosed offseason plan that keeps players hungry, focused, and honest about their work.We start with lessons from Nick Saban's process: celebrate briefly, then eliminate the “rat poison” of praise by anchoring everything to execution—one drill, one rep, one play at a time. Then we look at Ryan Day's transparency model and apply it to baseball with visible practice stats, effort grades, and execution metrics that remove hiding spots and turn accountability into culture. From there, we translate elite habits into concrete baseball standards: measurable throwing programs, exit velocity benchmarks, 60-yard improvements, body composition targets, and skill assessments scheduled and posted so progress is public and real. You'll hear how to reset the narrative on day one, rebuild roles from scratch, and design player-owned development plans that name three weaknesses and attack each with a partner, a timeline, and testing days. We frame roster turnover as a proving ground for new leaders and show how to “schedule humility” with film, guest speakers, and manufactured adversity through constraint scrimmages and competitive training blocks. The message is simple and sharp: excellence is a pursuit, not a destination, and last year's success can't become this year's excuse. If you're ready to turn comfort into fuel, lock in your standards, measure everything, and keep the goalposts moving. Subscribe, share this episode with a fellow coach, and leave a quick review telling us the one metric you'll track this offseason.
