It has been said that “Christmas comes but once a year.” Along with it comes the excitement, beauty, and joy of the season—the lights, gifts, music, and gatherings. But what about the day after Christmas? When the gifts are unwrapped, the decorations begin to come down, and the family goes back to their routines, what remains?  This question challenges us to consider whether the spirit of Christmas is just a fleeting moment or something that transforms our lives. The account of the shepherds in Luke 2 offers valuable insights into what the after-Christmas spirit should look like. Their response to the good news of Christ's birth gives us a blueprint for living beyond the season.

Luke 2:22–40 Jesus Presented at the Temple [22] And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord [23] (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) [24] and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” [25] Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. [26] And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. [27] And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, [28] he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, [29] “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; [30] for my eyes have seen your salvation [31] that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, [32] a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” [33] And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. [34] And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed [35] (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” [36] And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, [37] and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. [38] And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. The Return to Nazareth [39] And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. [40] And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. (ESV)

Mary's song in Luke 1:46-55, known as the Magnificat, is a powerful declaration of God's favor toward the humble and lowly. Zack reflects on the revolutionary nature of this song—and its exemplifying one of the major notes found throughout almost every page of Scripture. But this note—God's deep love for the marginalized—is not (just) a claim about God or an ethical imperative for us. Instead, it is one of many ways to articulate the Gospel itself. We have been Freed-From the world's givens of accumulation, self-securing, and resulting inequalities and Freed-For sharing God's own heart of putting others ahead of oneself.

Send us a textIn "What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas?", Pastor Walter Bowers Jr. addresses the theme of loneliness, particularly during the Christmas season. He discusses the societal implications of loneliness, referencing a national epidemic declared by the Surgeon General. Through the story of a widow who dedicated her life to worship, he emphasizes the importance of community, fasting, and reconnecting with faith to combat feelings of isolation. Pastor Walt encourages the believers to expect change and to share their stories as a form of evangelism, highlighting the transformative power of faith and connection. In this powerful worship, Pastor Walt emphasizes the transformative power of faith and the concept of 'suddenly' in God's timing. He speaks to the loneliness and struggles faced by many, declaring that God is ready to pick them up and turn their lives around. The message of freedom resonates throughout, as Pastor Walt encourages listeners to walk in their newfound liberation, proclaiming that the mountains in their lives have been moved. He calls for spiritual warfare, urging individuals to intercede for themselves and others, and to release their burdens in prayer. This worship culminates in a powerful declaration of freedom and a reminder that they will not leave unchanged. Welcome To Chosen City Church! Singing EXISTS because some REALITIES are too WONDERFUL for God-CONSCIOUS beings to KNOW and merely TALK about. Genesis 2:23 // Exodus 15:1-2 // 1 Samuel 2:1 // Romans 11:33-36 2. Because Christians know God, there are ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES to SING about His glorious CHARACTER and WORKS. Psalm 47:6-7, 66:2, 147:1 3. Upon HEARING the NEWS of God's merciful PROVISION of the promised SAVIOR, Mary and the multitude of ANGELS alike burst forth in SONG. WE should too! Luke 2:10-14 // Luke 2:28-32 // Colossians 3:16 “Christian singing is the musical use of the voice to express truth that accords with God's word, and feelings that accord with God's worth. It is a gift beyond measuring." — John Piper The Hub City Church is a local expression of the church in Crestview, Florida, making disciples Who Believe the Gospel, Abide in Christ and Obey the Word to the glory of God. What would a Christmas be without everything normally associated with it except the coming of Jesus into our world? Imagine, no lights, no parties, no trees, no candles, no carols, no gifts, nothing of that sort. What if all we had was a presence to God in which the message came, “Christ is born”? I know how difficult it is for us to even imagine such a thing. But that is precisely what Mary had in store. And nine months before Jesus would be born, he was miraculously conceived in her virgin womb. A holy and gracious act of God which could never have happened otherwise, but a conception that would not have happened in Mary's heart, mind, and body, without her important part in it all. But it was a season of her life in which it was all about Christ being formed in her and brought forth to the world, which is still the true story of Christmas. If Christ is to be born in us, manifest in our lives into the world this season, we will need both the effort of making room for him to come and the power of the Holy Spirit to bring about the conception. And we must consider, “How?”
