Wolfe Tones hurling boss Barry Keane claims they're not getting carried away after their opening round victory in the TUS Clare Senior Hurling Championship. The Shannon side shocked neighbours Sixmilebridge with a 2-21 to 3-16 victory in Group 4. Tones were spurred on by a blistering first half performances which saw them notch 2-14 of their overall tally. Keane has been telling Clare FM's Derek Dormer they still had to grind out the result despite a strong opening period. Elsewhere, in Group 1 Clonlara got off the mark with a four point win over St Joseph's Doora Barefield. The 2023 County Champions came through a stern test registering a 0-22 to 0-18 victory to sit second in the group standings. Manager Donal Madden claims they were under no illusions about how tough a task they'd face.

 For this episode of The Buzz, JJA Book Committee chair Bob Blumenthal speaks with the winners of the 2026 JJA Jazz Awards' two Book of the Year categories: pianist Matthew Shipp, honored for Black Mystery School Pianists and Other Writings (Autonomedia), and pianist and critic Ethan Iverson, honored as the writer behind Oceans of Time: The Musical Autobiography of Billy Hart (Cymbal Press).Shipp and Iverson are both working musicians who write, and the conversation keeps circling back to what that dual life costs and gives them. Shipp traces his path from commissioned blog pieces to a book collecting essays on David S. Ware, Paul Bley, and Wayne Shorter, plus prose poems on boxing, decadence, and the New York club scene he came up in during the 1980s. Iverson describes fifteen years on the road with Billy Hart before finally getting the older drummer on tape, reading him the manuscript twice, and watching Hart pull stories back out both times. Both men also discovered, mid-conversation, an unlikely shared history: each once worked as a dance-company music director, Shipp for a small post-Cunningham troupe in the 1980s, Iverson for the Mark Morris Dance Group decades later.The episode also catches Shipp and Iverson comparing notes on a much more recent flashpoint: the online reaction to André 3000's ambient flute album, which briefly made Shipp's own criticism go viral. But the conversation's real center is a shared argument about criticism itself. Dr. William Turner and Dr. Ted Olson talk to songwriter, author, and scholar Alice Randall, whose pioneering work in country music garnered her video-of-the-year recognition ("Is There Life out There," Reba McEntire) and acknowledgement as the first black woman to be the co-writer of a number one country song ("XXX's and OOO's," Trisha Yearwood). She is also a New York Times bestselling author (The Wind Done Gone) and serves on the faculty of Vanderbilt University, where she has taught courses on Black country music, coal mining history and culture, and soul food. Randall's most recent book, My Black Country: A Journey Through Country Music's Black Past, Present, and Future, is a memoir tracing her experiences in the Nashville music industry and the roots of Black influence on the genre. Its companion album, My Black Country: The Songs of Alice Randall features her songs performed by artists such as Leyla McCalla, Rhiannon Giddens, and Alice's own daughter, Caroline Randall Williams. Giddens' rendition of Randall's song "Ballad of Sally Anne" received a Grammy nomination in 2025.Dr. William Turner is a longtime African American studies scholar and retired Distinguished Professor of Appalachian Studies and Regional Ambassador from Berea College. He was also a research assistant to Roots author Alex Haley and co-editor of the groundbreaking Blacks in Appalachia. In 2021, Turner received Western Carolina University's individual Mountain Heritage Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Southern Appalachian Studies. His memoir called The Harlan Renaissance, available from West Virginia University Press, was awarded the prestigious Weatherford Award at the 2022 Appalachian Studies Association Conference. Dr. Ted Olson is a music historian and professor of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University. He is the author of many books, articles, reviews, encyclopedia entries, and oral histories. Olson has produced and compiled a number of documentary albums of traditional Appalachian music, including On Top of Old Smoky and Big Bend Killing, both from Smokies Life. His work has received a number of awards, including nine Grammy nominations. The East Tennessee Historical Society honored Olson with its Ramsey Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021.

As an artist, Maxon spent her early teens years running in and out of studios, writing and recording original music with her then vocal coach and release artist Cheryl Beattie (Warner Music, 1999). A two-time recipient of the Mornington Peninsula Development Arts Grant, winner of the Green Wedge Songwriting Comp and City of Melbourne Grant Recipient, Maxon's ability to shatter yet heal hearts with her raw creations and powerful depth simultaneously makes any listener feel instantly seen, understood and coaxed into the light. An LGBTQIA+ creative powerhouse fluent in fusing Americana with 70s folk- rock and a modern sheen, Maxon's relationship with music spans beyond the studio and the stage. From devouring John Mayer's Room for Squares on CD on a family road trip through to rapidly developing her own love for singing and songwriting, Maxon has since gone on to share stages and lineups with the likes of Tones and I, Ella Hooper, Alex Lahey more, and has also appeared at major festivals including St Kilda Festival and Melbourne Fringe. Maxon's long-awaited debut album Talking With Strangers is now out as well as her song Little Blue!
