Lace up your fireproof spandex—it's time for another dystopian episode of Podcast Assemble! This week, DL's been to Egypt (queue tinfoil hat time), while Tommy's was really disappointed with Peacemaker season 2. Mike Rowe talks about not being the “dirty jobs” Mike Rowe, planning for the future, being funny in high school, becoming an electrical engineer and giving it up for comedy, performing in NY comedy clubs, Alan Zweibel moving him to LA, roasts, jokes, his book “It's a Funny Thing”, Rodney Dangerfield giving him hope, comedy cliques, and why he's moving to Connecticut. Bio: Michael Rowe is an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer who has worked on many highly regarded comedy and animated shows on television. While still a teenager, Michael began his comedy career as a stand-up comic at such notable New York City clubs as The Improv, The Comedy Cellar and Caroline's. From there, he landed a job writing jokes for SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Weekend Update, as well as sketches for shows on MTV, A&E and Comedy Central. Hollywood called, bringing Michael out west to work with Martin Short on his syndicated sketch-comedy show. This soon led to opportunities as a sitcom writer/producer on shows starring George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Ted Danson, and with Eddie Murphy on his groundbreaking animated series, THE PJs. Michael's affinity for the comedic heart and artistic freedom of animation led to a seven-season run as a writer and Co-Executive Producer of the highly acclaimed series, FUTURAMA. From there, Michael joined FAMILY GUY as a writer/producer and soon after, he became the showrunner for Comedy Central's animated series, BRICKLEBERRY. Along the way Michael was awarded 6 Emmy nominations (with 1 win), 2 Annie Awards (with 2 wins), and a WGA Award for his FUTURAMA episode, Game of Tones. He was also nominated for a Canadian Emmy for his work as Executive Producer and Director on Netflix's animated series, THE TRAILER PARK BOYS. In recent live-action endeavors, Michael was a Co-Executive Producer on the hit TV series, 2 BROKE GIRLS for CBS. Michael is currently in development with Supercell creating an adult animated series from their megahit game franchises CLASH OF CLANS and CLASH ROYALE. He is also in development on an animated series with the incredible David Cross, and a separate animated series with Bob Odenkirk. He is also a long-standing, frequent contributor to the ongoing Comedy Central Roasts, featuring such celebrities as James Franco, Donald Trump, Justin Bieber and Roseanne, just to name a few.

Hey Lifers! Today’s guest is someone that Britt is completely convinced she manifested on to the podcast!Teddy’s voice has been the sound track to her relationship hard launch, her engagement and also her wedding first dance! Teddy is the superstar singer songwriter behind hits like ‘Lose Control’ which has over 2 billion streams on Spotify, ‘Bad Dreams’ and ‘The Door’. He also has a brand new song out with our friend Tones and I and David Guetta! He’s currently touring around Australia, playing sold-out arena shows! This week on the show, the Portland-based group of Roman Norfleet, Harlan Silverman, and Kennedy Verrett, aka The Cosmic Tones Research Trio. “Cosmic” is a term that has, thanks to critics and writers, become a little overused. Practically every indie rock band or country-based singer/songwriter with an effects pedal employs “cosmic” touches these days. But in the case of the Trio? Well, it's actually earned. Inspired by the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, the experimental outer space jams of the Sun Ra Arkestra, and the spacious, meditative soundscapes of Laraaji, the Trio's sound is one based in deep harmonic resonance and the idea that music can, in a very real sense, heal listeners. Your mileage may vary, of course, but listening to the deep and searching sounds of the group's new self-titled album, out October 24 via Mississippi Records, we find ourselves contemplating notions of inner sound, of a kind of music that plays deep down, at the core of all there is. In this conversation, we speak with the Tones about a variety of topics, including the influence of Sun Ra, the musings of Sufi mystic Hazrat Inayat Khan, whose book, The Mysticism of Sound and Music is a foundational text for the Trio, the group's ecumenical approach to musical spirituality. “Cosmic” may be a loaded term these days, but as the Trio explains in this interview, we are each our own little cosmos; we hope the following conversation brings you into deeper engagement with the universal within you. It certainly did so for us. We're brought to you by Aquarium Drunkard, an independent music media crew headed by Justin Gage. Over at Aquarium Drunkard, you'll gain access to 20 years of music writing, playlist, essays, mixtapes, radio special, podcasts, videos and more.
Teddy Swims is here, baby! We caught up with him about his new song with Tones and I and David Guetta, and he spilled on how that collab actually came together. He also told us about his wild NRL Grand Final performance — yep, the TNT cover that had the whole country buzzing — and how he somehow pulled it off in a skirt. Teddy’s been loving life down under, showing off his new UV tattoos that glow under blacklight (he’s basically a walking rave), and he says Australia feels like home now. He’s manifesting a sold-out stadium tour next time he’s here… and we’re totally on board for that.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mike Brodie's first monograph, A Period of Juvenile Prosperity was published by Twin Palms more than a decade ago in 2013, depicting his fellow rail-riders and drifters in a rebellious and wildfire pursuit of adventure and freedom. “Brodie leapt into the life of picture-making as if he was the first to do it,” Danny Lyon wrote about the book in Aperture. Next came Tones of Dirt and Bone, a collection of earlier SX-70 pictures Brodie made when photography first led him to hopping freights, when he was known as “The Polaroid Kidd.” And then Brodie seemed to disappear from the art world as suddenly and mysteriously as he'd first appeared. Maybe his vanishing was another myth. Maybe it was just a necessary retreat. “I was divorcing myself from all that,” he says. “I was growing up. I was pursuing this other life.”In Nashville he became a diesel mechanic. Fell in love. Moved across the country again. Got married. Bought land on the long dusty Winnemucca road Johnny Cash sang about. Started his own business. Built a house. Put down roots. And when that life exploded, the open road called again. Throughout almost all of it, his cameras were with him, and at last those pictures are coming to light. If Michael Brodie's first monograph was a cinematic dream, his latest, Failing, again published by Twin Palms in 2024, is the awakening and the reckoning, a raw, wounded, and searingly honest photographic diary of a decade marked by love and heartbreak, loss and grief — biblical in its scope, and in its search for truth and meaning. Here is the flip side of the American dream, seen from within; here is bearing close witness to the brutal chaos of addiction and death; here are front-seat encounters with hitchhikers and kindred wanderers on society's edges, sustained by the ragtag community of the road. Failing often exists in darkness but is tuned to grace. Brodie's eye stays forever open to the strange and fleeting beauty that exists in forgotten places — the open country and the lost horizons that sweep past dust-spattered windows in a spectral blur.Mike worked on and features in a recently released hour long documentary eponymously entitled Slack, the nickname of his one time girlfriend, Mia Justice Smith, who sadly died of a drug overdose, and to whom the film is dedicated. The film, which is directed by Mike's friend and collaborator Cyrill Lachauer., revisits the freighthopping years and delves into Mike's creative collaboration with Mia.In episode 266, Mike discusses, among other things:The documentary he helped to make about his freighthopping years - SlackHow train hopping and photography went hand in handRomanticism vs. miseryTrain hopping as a performanceLosing his girlfriend, Mia Justice Smith, to a drug overdoseHis attempt at a ‘normal' life and how that impacts his creativityThe success of A Period of Juvenile Prosperity and its downsideHow the title came aboutThe darkness of the pictures in latest book, FailingTussling with the question of exploitation and ethical responsibilityAmbitions to make a feature film one dayThe ongoing push/pull of art v. home lifeThe desire to photograph machines and ways of life and ways of working that are passing awayNext steps in the USA - projects vs. photographing lifeWebsite | Instagram Become a A Small Voice podcast member here to access exclusive additional subscriber-only content and the full archive of 200+ previous episodes for £5 per month.Subscribe to my weekly newsletter here for everything A Small Voice related and much more besides.Follow me on Instagram here.Build Yourself a Squarespace Website video course here.

In this episode of PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf, photographer Mike Brodie talks about his raw, intimate and powerful new book, Failing (Twin Palms). Growing up with a tough home life, Brodie found escape in the punk and BMX scenes before, at just 17, he began hopping freight trains and photographing the drifters and outcasts he met on the rails. Those images became A Period of Juvenile Prosperity (2013), a groundbreaking book that launched his career. After that early success, Brodie walked away from the art world to become a diesel mechanic. Now, age 40, with a son, he reunites with longtime collaborator Paul Schiek ( TBW Books) to publish Failing and reflects with Sasha on his journey, the challenges of early fame, and what it means to return to photography on his own terms. https://www.instagram.com/mikebrodie_thepolaroidkidd https://www.twinpalms.com/products/mike-brodie-failing Mike Brodie's first monograph, A Period of Juvenile Prosperity touched down more than a decade ago, depicting his fellow rail-riders and drifters in a rebellious and wildfire pursuit of adventure and freedom. I was pursuing this other life.” In Nashville he became a diesel mechanic.

From the BBC World Service: A trade agreement between the United States and the European Union means that U.S. tariffs on imported European goods will be significantly lower than previously thought. The U.S. will cap tariffs on European cars, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors at 15%. That's a huge decrease from prior threats of levies as high as 250%. Plus, it's the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, showcasing drama, comedy, and music. The tourism provides an economic boost, but also makes things pricier. How are folks there dealing?
