*This episode mentions suicide and may be triggering for some listeners. This week, we’re diving into something truly transformative—the power of love to change everything. First, we hear from Father Richard Rohr, who shares his lifetime of wisdom about how experiencing deep, unconditional love—not rules or fear—is what really brings about meaningful change. Then, Pastor Zach Meerkreebs takes us to Asbury University, where a truly extraordinary event happened in that faith community. He reminds us that following Jesus’ example of humility can open our lives up to amazing possibilities. But that doesn’t say, ‘Don’t be angry.’ Right now there is so much that deserves anger—the wars in our world, how we treat the very ones Jesus told us to love, the little ones, the rejected ones. That comes from an excess of anger and a deficiency of sadness.” - Fr. Richard Rohr “An experience of infinite, unconditional love—that’s the only thing that changes us.” - Fr. Richard Rohr “We can’t authentically love one another without experiencing the authentic love of Jesus first.” - Zach Meerkreebs “Within a couple of days, it had been spread around the world that God was moving on the campus [of Asbury University], and we started having guests from South America and the Middle East and Asia to come and encounter God at our chapel service.” - Zach Meerkreebs “Humility really is a foundation in what’s countercultural, captivating, convicting and compelling of the Christian walk.” - Zach Meerkreebs “If you read Scripture and you study the person of Jesus, humility is the most captivating thing about Him.” - Zach Meerkreebs “Because I understand who I am and I understand who God is, that drives me to pray. I want to spend time with Him, because I know my life is better when I spend time with Him and when I listen to His voice.” - Zach Meerkreebs _______________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! This week, we’ll hear from Jay Lowder, an evangelist who has spent more than two decades traveling the globe, sharing the message of the gospel with audiences ranging from NFL teams to prison inmates. Early in his life, Jay struggled with depression which led him to medicate with alcohol, but ultimately brought him no peace from his pain. Feeling like giving up, Jay considered suicide, and he shares about the series of events that led him to finally find the peace he was looking for. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Riley Kehoe, an influencer and author, who shares the harrowing story of how her family survived a tsunami in Thailand when she was just a little girl. Riley recounts the terrifying events of the day, how her family stayed to help those who lost everything, and how she leaned on scripture to deal with the aftermath of such a traumatic event. It even goes beyond being forgiven. It goes to a Friend that's closer than a brother that wants to walk with you, lead you, and guide you. And it goes back to the verse that I heard the night I met Jesus. Lordwin Jeyakumar - September 29th 2024 - How Do We Embrace the Gift of Patience While Trusting God's Perfect Timing? How do you express the word 'patience' in your native language? People tend to lose patience......... Healthcare System Immigration and Visa Processing        Public Transportation        Traffic and Road Construction Winter Weather and Driving Housing Market Government Services Job Search and Career Advancement Parenting Challenges Relationships and Marriages Caring for Elderly Parents or aging parents What is the meaning of 'patience'? * The capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble * Suffering without getting angry or upset. * According to the Bible, patience is often described as the ability to endure suffering, trials, or waiting with faith and trust in God's timing. * It is seen as a fruit of the Spirit, reflecting a calm, steadfast reliance on God's will. Ephesians 4:2 (NLT): Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. Psalm 37:7 (NLT): Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don't worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes. The Fruits of Patience 1. Contentment through Patience 2. Self-Sufficiency in Christ 3. Joy in Suffering 4. Temporary Grief, Eternal Joy 1. Contentment through Patience Philippians 4:11-12 (NLT) 11. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. Luke 12:15 (NLT) Then he said, Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own. 2. Self-Sufficiency in Christ 1 Timothy 6:6 (NKJV) Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 3. Joy in Suffering James 1:2-3 (NKJV) 2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience Romans 5: 3-4 (NLT) 3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 4. Temporary Grief, Eternal Joy 2 Corinthians 4:17 (NLT) For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! Is patience alone sufficient to navigate life's challenges, or do we also need faith? Hebrews 6:12 When God's Timing Doesn't Match Ours: A Call to Patience What does the Bible say about timing? Ecclesiastes 3:1 & Acts 1:7 (NIV) & 2 Peter 3: 8 Why doesn't God reveal every detail about our lives in advance? Have you ever been in a situation where you were hoping for something to happen and prayed to God, but it didn't happen as soon as you wanted? Why does God allow delays in our lives? Four Life Principles to Overcome Challenges * Fear Not - Isaiah 41:10 * Fret Not - Psalm 37:1 , Philippians 4:6 , Matthew 6: 25-27 * Forget Not - Psalm 103:2 , Proverbs 3: 1 * Faint Not -Isaiah 40:31 .Galatians 6:9 Are you feeling like giving up on something in your life? Bible Reading: Luke 15:11-32Ayden found his little brother Felix in the kitchen, standing in a mess of raw eggs."What happened?" asked Ayden.Felix shrugged. "I wanted to see what would happen if I dropped a carton of eggs.""You're in trouble."Felix hung his head. "I know."Mom would be down any minute. Ayden thought about helping Felix clean, but he didn't want Mom to think he was involved. "You'd better clean up before Mom sees."Felix started cleaning. Ayden slipped into the other room. After a few minutes, Mom walked into the kitchen and gasped. Ayden couldn't help but listen."Felix, what's going on?" Mom asked."I dropped a carton of eggs. On purpose." At least Felix was honest. He sniffled. "I'm really sorry, Mom. I know I shouldn't have."All was quiet. Then Mom said, "I forgive you."Ayden peeked around the corner. Mom was on her hands and knees, helping Felix clean! This couldn't be happening. It wasn't fair.Ayden stormed into the kitchen. "Why isn't Felix in trouble?" He avoided Felix's gaze. "I'm the one who always does what I'm supposed to. Why don't I ever get the attention?"Mom gestured for Ayden to join them. He dragged his feet as he walked over. "I love both of you," Mom said. "Always. Whether you mess up or not." She kissed Ayden on the forehead, then Felix. "Felix was honest with me, and we can celebrate that. Just like we can celebrate that no one will dump eggs on my floor again. Right?"Felix blushed. "Right."A story from church came to Ayden's mind--the prodigal son. The younger son went off and made a mess of things, but when he came home, his father celebrated. The older son was angry his father hadn't celebrated him, since he'd been around all along. The older son had missed the point.Ayden didn't want to miss the point. Mom loved him, and she loved Felix. And God also loved both of them. Jesus died for their wrongs so they could be God's children, and He would always love and forgive them, no matter what.Ayden hugged Mom. "Can I help?"Felix grinned. "Yes, please!"Ayden grabbed a paper towel, and they got to work.–Becca WierwilleHow About You?Have you ever felt like Ayden--upset someone else has been forgiven when you've been doing the right thing all along? We don't have to worry about others receiving more love or forgiveness than us. We all mess up--we all sin by doing wrong things. But God loves us, no matter what. He offers His forgiveness to each of us, and He always celebrates when lost sinners are found.Today's Key Verse:"My son," the father said, "you are always with me, and everything I have is yours." Bible Reading: James 2:14-17Hadley watched as Clemence hurried into their church classroom. The loose sole of her worn shoe slapped against the floor. Flap…flap...flap. She looked like she was trying to enter without anyone noticing her. Hadley knew Clemence's brother had been sick for a while and most of her family's money went toward doctor bills. Mrs. Perez, their teacher, held up her Bible. "Who will read today's verse for us?" A boy named Adam raised his hand."Luke 3:11," Adam began. "Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same." "Now, what do you think this verse means?" asked Mrs. Perez.Hadley raised her hand. "It means that we should share with others in need. If you have something you don't need and know someone who needs it, give it to them." "That's right," said Mrs. Perez. "As believers, we have the power to be generous because Jesus was so generous to us, giving up His own life as a sacrifice for our sins. We could never give as much as Jesus has given to us, but we can be generous with what we have and share with others." Hadley thought of Clemence and her flapping shoe. She was much taller than Clemence and had outgrown several pairs of shoes, as well as many clothes that were still in great shape. Suddenly, she had an idea. "Mrs. Perez, that Bible verse made me think of a big box I have at home where I put things I don't need anymore," said Hadley. "What if I brought it in so it could be our giving box? We could use it to collect clothes, shoes, books, toys, or anything else we don't need anymore and then give those things to people who need them." "Yeah," said Adam. "We could even paint shirts on the box to help us remember the verse we read today!""I love that idea!" said Mrs. Perez. "Okay, Hadley, you bring the box to class next week and I'll bring painting supplies." The kids cheered.Hadley smiled. When she thought of all Jesus had given her, she was excited to share what she had with others. After class, she'd let Mrs. Perez know that she wanted Clemence to have first pick of whatever was in the box. –Christine CollierHow About You?Do you give to people in need? The Bible says that Christians show their faith in Jesus by helping others in need. Because Jesus has given us so much, we can give to others. Maybe you know someone who needs something in particular that you could help with. Even if you don't, there are lots of ways to give to people in your community and around the world. Ask God to show you what you can do to help.Today's Key Verse:Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same. Bible Reading: Matthew 18:11-13; John 10:11-14Amir closed his eyes and sighed in frustration. For the first time, Wyatt had accepted an invitation to go to church. The teacher had explained that people are lost in sin, and Jesus came to find them and save them. But Wyatt didn't understand. "I don't get it," he said as he and Amir walked home. "It doesn't make sense! A perfect God wouldn't search for people, because He wouldn't need them for anything--especially not people who keep messing up all the time." Amir didn't know how to explain it any better than their teacher had."I've had enough God talk," Wyatt said as they rounded the corner. "Wanna stop at my house for a while?" Amir nodded. When the boys arrived at Wyatt's house, his little sister Rosalie ran up to them. "Wyatt!" she called. "Ranger's missing!""What?" Wyatt suddenly looked like he was about to panic. He loved his family's dog."I looked all around the neighborhood for him, but I can't find him," said Rosalie. "Can you go look for him, Wyatt?""I'll help," said Amir, and the boys took off in different directions, calling the dog's name and whistling for him.Amir circled the block, and when he got back to Wyatt's house, he found Wyatt throwing sticks for the dog. "Ranger heard me call and came to me," Wyatt said with a grin. "I think he wanted to be found!"That gave Amir an idea. "Why did you have to go look for Ranger?" he asked."Because he was lost," said Wyatt, looking puzzled. "Besides, I didn't have to look for him--I wanted to! He's my dog--he belongs with me."Amir grinned. "Right, and you know what? Jesus didn't have to look for us either. He wanted to because He made us and we belong with Him. Jesus loves you, Wyatt, even more than you love Ranger. He wants to find you, and He can--but you have to want to be found." Wyatt looked a bit startled. "Come over sometime and we can talk about it some more," said Amir. "Okay?"Wyatt watched Ranger chew the end of a stick. "Maybe," he said thoughtfully. "I'll think about it." – Paulette Cross How About You?Have you ever lost something really important to you and wanted to find it? That's how God feels about people--about you. Bible Reading: Mark 3:7-12; Luke 5:17-26Jenna hurried to get ready for the concert. Her dad had bought them good tickets, and she wanted to get to their seats as soon as possible. As soon as she was finished putting her hair in a ponytail, she hurried down the stairs. "Let's go!"Her dad chuckled from the couch. "It's early yet, honey.""But I want to make sure we get there as soon as we can," Jenna said."Your mom and sisters are still getting ready." Dad patted the cushion beside him. "Sit for a minute.""I don't want to sit. I want to go!" Jenna sighed as she slumped onto the couch.Dad smiled. "You make me think of something."Jenna's brows knit. "What?""When Jesus was living on earth, do you think people got excited like you are tonight? I know He drew large crowds and the people had to pack in to see Him," Dad said."They probably wanted to get a good seat," Jenna agreed."But they didn't have tickets," Dad said. "Think of those who brought the paralyzed man to Jesus. When they got there, the house was already full. But instead of turning around, they went on the roof and made a hole in it to let their friend in!""We'd probably get in trouble if we did that to see the band," Jenna said.Dad laughed. "We would. But think about how special it was to see Jesus. He healed the paralyzed man and made him walk again. He saved him from his sins…""If I could see Jesus like that tonight, I would," Jenna said. "It would be so cool. I would even do it instead of the concert, and I'm really looking forward to that.""Me too," Dad agreed. "Seeing Him would be awesome, and one day we will see Him because He's saved us from our sins too, but at least we don't have to see Him to know He is with us.""He'll even be at the concert with us," Jenna said. She would love to see Jesus, but she was glad He was always there, whether she could see Him or not. "I hope He likes the music."Dad grinned. "I think He will." – Bethany AckerHow About You?What do you think it would be like to see Jesus in person? What would you say to Him if you saw Him? Sermon Notes Luke 8:5a NIV "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed,…" 1) "some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up." – Luke 8:5b NIV 2) "Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture." – Luke 8:6 NIV 3) "Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants." – Luke 8:7 NIV 4) "Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." – Luke 8:8a NIV When (Jesus) said this, he called out, "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear." – Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭8b ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭11‬-‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved." Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭13‬ ‭NIV "Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away."‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature." Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭15‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop." "To retain or restrain" the word of God means to hold fast, keep secure, or even in the opposite sense, it can mean to "restrain" it and not let it escape from you. James‬ ‭1‬:‭22‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. "… by persevering, produce a crop." hupomoné = a remaining under, a patient endurance (endure under…) James‬ ‭1‬:‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. What was the last thing the Lord told you to do? Have you done it? Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭22 NIV One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out.‬ Mark‬ ‭4‬:‭36a‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "Leaving the crowd behind, they took (Jesus) along, just as he was, in the boat." Jesus is inviting the disciples into a bigger story than they had ever imagined possible. Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭23‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭24‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭25‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him." A crisis of faith occurs when you realize the storm you're with is bigger than the storm you're in. "If you live a long time, eventually your body will give out, and you'll die. And maybe it will happen sooner – through an earthquake, a fire, or some other disaster. Nature is violent and overwhelming – it's unmanageable power, and it's going to get you sooner or later. You may say, that's true, but if I go to Jesus, he's not under my control either. He lets things happen that I don't understand. He doesn't do things according to my plan, or in a way that makes sense to me. But if Jesus is God, then he's got to be great enough to have some reasons to let you go through things you can't understand. His power is unbounded, but so are his wisdom and his love" – Timothy Keller, Jesus the King: Understanding the Life and Death of the Son of God Sometimes, the purpose of the storm is to prune your life for more effectiveness.

If our thinking at its foundation is fractured we fail to discern (recognize) the normality's of God and we will forever see God's movements as abnormal, obtuse, and coincidental instead of realizing His omnipresence. Welcome my friends to season 3 of the Determined to Dance podcast. My prayer is that you'll be encouraged to persevere daily in our chaotic world. Today's episode, Is Death a Mystery? looks at what God's Word has to say about death. Show Notes: Is Death a Mystery? Today's episode brings us to myth number 3 in Jeff Walling's book, Daring to Dance with God. He says: “Death is a mystery we can never understand.” I have found throughout my life that few people like to discuss death. If you want to clear a room, just make dying, hospitals, and funeral homes the topic for conversation and people will ease their way to the front door. Death is a difficult discussion. Could that be, as Walling points out, because there is such a mystery associated with it? People have seances to try and speak to the dead. They pray for loved ones who have passed away. They try many ways to find out what exactly lies at and behind death's door. Except they don't look at what the Creator of the universe says in the Bible. God's Word is full of scriptures giving us a peek behind death's door and if you've given your life to Jesus and are following closely after Him, you're going to like what you see. John 3:16 tells us: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” We are promised eternal life if we believe in Jesus. (NIV) John 11:25-26 confirms this: “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?'" Jesus said we will never die. (NIV) John 14:1-4 goes a little deeper: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me so that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Jesus is preparing a place for us and He will be there. (NIV) Luke 23:43 is reassuring: “Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.'" This verse in reference to the thief on the cross is very comforting when you wonder if people can get saved when at the point of death. Revelation 21:1-7 shows the end: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God's home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty, I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.” Wow. Everything will be new. Fresh. Clean. And no death, sorrow, crying, or pain. And it's true. I'm ready for no more death. This past week, our dear sweet puppy we'd had for two months got away from us and took off after a truck. He ran under the wheel, and his life ended. I was so angry at death, stealing such a joyful life away from us. But one day, death will no longer have a say. Life in heaven will be eternal. Are you prepared to meet God today? Bible Reading: Luke 4:1-14Adam placed the ladder against the garden shed. As he climbed up it, his dad looked up from weeding the garden and hurried over. "Adam! What are you doing up there?""Practicing!" Adam called back. "I have to jump off the shed roof at school tomorrow, so I want to try it at home first."Dad grabbed the end of the ladder. "What did you say you're going to do?""I said I have to jump off the roof. It's to prove my faith." "You'll do no such thing!" said Dad. "You could break a leg. Come down this instant." Adam descended the ladder and sat beside his dad on the grass. "Now," said Dad, "what's this all about?"Adam hugged his knees. "I was telling some friends at school about Jesus, and they laughed and said it was all baloney. They don't believe there's a God. Then Nick dared me to jump off the roof. He says if I can do it without getting hurt, he'll believe in God! So I'm praying that God will help me jump off the shed safely."Dad sighed. "Adam, nothing is impossible for God. But when you ask Him for something, you need to make sure it doesn't go against what the Bible says. I don't think jumping off the roof to prove He's real is in line with His Word.""But Dad, if it would make Nick believe, wouldn't God want me to do it?""Last night we read about how Satan tempted Jesus by telling Him to jump down from the highest point of the temple," Dad reminded Adam. "Do you remember Jesus's reply?""Um…He said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"Dad nodded. "When your friends dare you to do something foolish, you don't have the right to test God either. He tells us to share the good news of Jesus with others, but remember that it's God who changes people's hearts, not us. Jumping off a roof isn't going to make Nick believe in God. I think the best way to help him and the others know that God is real is to pray for them and trust Jesus to help them see His love in you as their friend.""Okay," said Adam. "If Jesus wouldn't jump off a building, I won't either. I'll tell the guys the jump is off." -Tanya FerdinanduszHow About You?Have you ever wanted to do something to try to prove God is real? It doesn't work that way. The Bible tells us not to test God the way Satan did when he tempted Jesus and dared Him to prove who He was. Jesus wants people to know He's real, but not through foolish stunts. He shares the truth about who He is in His Word, the Bible. Point others to His truth and love, and trust Him to do the rest.Today's Key Verse:Jesus answered…"Do not put the Lord your God to the test." Nevertheless: Surrender My Comfort 3/12/23 “As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.'” “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”” Mark 10:17-21 NIV Luke 22:39-44 39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. We don't have to be anti-comfort but we should be: 1. Anti-complacency 2. Anti-dependency Eagerness Certainty Lack Disappointment “Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!” “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”” Mark 10:28-31 NIV

Bible Reading: Mark 5:1-20"Hey, buddy," Dad said to Jamal as he cleared away the lunch dishes, "after I help your mom clean up, let's head over to the park.""Nah, that's okay," Jamal said quietly. "I don't really want to go.""That doesn't sound like you," said Dad. "You usually love going to the park. What's up?"Jamal hesitated, then said, "I heard a couple of ladies talking at church this morning about how difficult it must be for you and Mom to take care of me with my disability. I feel like it's not fair you have to do all these extra things for me that other kids don't need. You have so much to do; it's not worth your time."Dad put his hand on Jamal's shoulder. "What was our lesson about in Sunday school this morning? And you better remember, because I'm your Sunday school teacher!"Jamal chuckled. "It was about the demon-possessed man Jesus healed.""Yes," Dad said, reaching for his Bible. "But there's something significant about that story I didn't have time to talk about this morning. In the chapter before, Jesus spends all day preaching on one side of the lake and then asks His disciples to take Him across the lake in a boat. They endure a terrible storm during the night that Jesus silences with just His words, then arrive safely on the shore where the man is living among the tombs. Then look here--after healing the man, where does Jesus go next?" Jamal looked at the verse. "Back across the lake.""That's right. So Jesus took the time, and the disciples' time, and risked all their lives in that storm just to go find one man everyone else had given up on." Dad looked Jamal in the eyes. "Jesus believed that one individual was worth all His time and energy that day. Do you think Jesus feels any differently about you?"Tears filled Jamal's eyes as he shook his head. "In fact, Jesus is so sure of your worth that He died on the cross for you," Dad said."So what you're saying is, if I'm that important to Jesus, I'm pretty important to you and Mom too, right?"Dad smiled and called toward the kitchen, "Hey, honey, is Jamal pretty important to us?"Mom looked up from the dishes and grinned. "You better believe it! Now you two better head to the park before all that good sunshine is wasted!" -Karen McMillanHow About You?Do you sometimes have a hard time believing you are worth it? Maybe you feel the stress of others and think you are just too much for them to handle. Jesus never feels that way about you. He created you for a purpose, and He sacrificed His life for you. Every Single Body is Wonderfully Made By God: Dr. Amy Kenny and Anna Lind Thomas

Where does the human body fit into our theology? In Scripture, humans are said to be "created in the image of God,” but overall the creation of our bodies is a great mystery, and we cannot say it has been created in the image of God without trying to understand what that phrase means. We don't get to choose its color, its height, or even the basic functionality of its parts. It remains largely an unpredictable, dynamic space that we must learn to inhabit, love, and enjoy as the most basic gift we've been given. Both of our guests this week learned to love the bodies that they were given. Dr. Amy Kenny is a disabled scholar and lecturer in Shakespearean studies at the University of California Riverside. She celebrates the beautiful vulnerability of her disabled body within the theology of the image of God and she advocates for disabled and unhoused people. Anna Lind Thomas is a comedian who overcame perceptions of being the "ugly duckling" when compared to her sister by taking time to hone her comedic craft, learn radical self-compassion, and celebrate the unpredictability of our human bodies.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Miles McPherson Upcoming interview: Tara Cole Genesis 1:27 NIV   Dr. Amy Kenny Romans 1:20 NIV John 9 NIV Luke 14 NIV My Body Is Not a Prayer Request: Disability Justice in the Church   Anna Lind Thomas I'm Not Ready for This Interview Quotes: “I started to realize that if the invisible qualities of God's divine nature can be clearly seen in that crookedness of trees, in the bouncing kangaroo, in the languishing lion, and the waddling penguin, then why can't I see it in myself, in my own disabled body?” - Dr. Amy Kenny  “I practice really acknowledging the beautiful vulnerability of my life. I listen to my body and acknowledge that she is a temple and I try to behold those invisible qualities of divine nature throughout creation as a practice every day to make sure I am rooted.” - Dr. Amy Kenny “My disabled body declares the truth that we are from ash and we will one day return to ash. And that day might be sooner than we plan. But my disabled body also declares what the Creator can do with a little bit of ash. And so I give thanks for that.” - Dr. Amy Kenny “I realized that not taking yourself so seriously is a gift, and having a healthy sense of humor about yourself, it really is a skill and it's kind of a nice way to live.” - Anna Lind Thomas “There is something about that deep belly laugh that makes us be like, Okay, I can handle this. You know, I can do this, I can handle this, let's go for it. There's really true power in that, and it's such an important thing.” - Anna Lind Thomas ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! All of us have faced times in our life that felt like a battle. Maybe you've had moments of disappointment and pain where you felt like no one understood you, or you had no support system. Perhaps someone hurt you with their words or planted a seed of doubt in your mind that you'd never get to where you want to be in life, and that trying to reach for more would be impossible. Here's some comforting news: we're not alone when we face battles in our lives. We're not left to fight by ourselves. God is greater than whatever we're facing and He has promised—He will never leave us.  Our guests this week held on to the promise that they could stand strong in God's power when people or circumstances might have crushed their spirits. Samuel Rodriguez experienced situations in his young life where discrimination threatened to divert him from the path he was meant to follow to become a pastor, author, movie producer, and advisor to three of the last four U.S. presidents. Cynt Marshall endured the abuse and abandonment of her father, but her faith in the Lord and the guidance of her mother led her to thrive despite her circumstances, ultimately becoming a highly successful business woman and the CEO of the Dallas Mavericks NBA franchise.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Dedee & Greg Lhamon Upcoming interview: Chris Nikic   Cynt Marshall Marshalling Resources Dallas Mavericks University of California at Berkeley Teenagers protesting in Parkland, Florida Reverend Dr. Billy Graham You've Been Chosen   Samuel Rodriguez New Season Church  National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference 1 Peter 1:16 NIV John 17:21 NIV Matthew 5:14-16 NIV  Luke 1:37 NIV https://pastorsam.com   Interview Quotes: “I always saw myself as the person to help everybody and to provide resources and to be there for people.” - Cynt Marshall “My leadership philosophy is around three Ls, and it's ‘listen to, learn from, and love the people.'” - Cynt Marshall “With faith in God and with standing on His promises, you can truly thrive—not just get through it—but truly thrive through the unexpected.” - Cynt Marshall "I've learned bad things do happen to good people. And so we have to accept adversity and never give up and let the Lord guide us through it." - Cynt Marshall "Love expels fear, mercy triumphs over judgment. All things are possible." - Samuel Rodrigez “We had this crazy dream that the church can be both Billy Graham and Dr. King, and that it can be both righteousness and justice, truth and love, sanctification and service, conviction and compassion.” - Samuel Rodriguez “If you look at the cross as two pieces of wood, one vertical and horizontal, the strongest part of the cross is the nexus. The point of convergence where they intersect. This is the place where we marry the optics of redemption with the metrics of reconciliation.” - Samuel Rodriguez "If our commitment is to be light in the midst of darkness and not just whine about the darkness, doors will continue to open." - Samuel Rodriguez ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Bible Reading: Luke 9:23-26; John 10:14-15"Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb…" Brielle stopped singing as she entered the kitchen. "Hi, Mom. I'm going to do my devotions now before I go over to Ayla's house to play.""Sounds good," said Mom.Brielle resumed her song as she went to her room and got out her Bible and devotional book. "It followed her to school one day, school one day, school one day…" Then there was silence as Brielle settled down and began to read.Soon the song began again. "It made the children laugh and play, laugh and play, laugh and play…" In the kitchen, Mom smiled as the singing got louder. A minute later, Brielle stood in the doorway. "I'm all done, Mom." Brielle grinned. "Mary had a good disciple, didn't she?"Mom raised her brows. "A good what?" "A good disciple. The Bible story I read today was about Jesus's twelve disciples. My devotional book says a disciple is a follower--and Mary's lamb followed her wherever she went," Brielle explained. "The lamb was a good disciple."Mom laughed. "I guess you're right. Like the song says, the lamb was so eager to be with Mary that it even followed her to school."Brielle nodded. "We should follow Jesus like that, shouldn't we? Even if kids at school think we're weird." "You're right about that," said Mom. "All of us who know Jesus--whether we're kids or adults--must follow Him. Others may laugh at us, but Jesus was laughed at too when He suffered and died for our sins. He was willing to make that sacrifice so we could be saved and have eternal life, so we should be willing to make sacrifices for Him. We should do what He wants us to do no matter what other people think." Brielle nodded thoughtfully. "The Bible says Jesus is the Good Shepherd and we are His sheep, doesn't it? So I guess Mary's lamb is a good example of how we should live as Jesus's disciples!""That's right," said Mom. "Jesus loves us and promises to take care of us, just like Mary took care of her lamb. That's why we can trust and follow Him." -Hazel W. MarettHow About You?Are you a follower of Jesus? Have you trusted Him to save you from sin? Then you are His disciple. He's teaching you to trust Him in every situation, to obey His commands, and to love others the way He does. There will be times when others laugh at you because you trust in Jesus, but He will never leave you. He is the Good Shepherd who loves and cares for His sheep.
