Woodie wagons are usually filed away as beach-cruiser nostalgia, but once you hear the details, they turn into rolling history lessons. We're back with Mary Argruza from the Savoy Auto Museum in Cartersville, Georgia, for a lively tour through a woodie display that connects craftsmanship, wartime problem-solving, and the moment the American station wagon became the default family road trip machine. If you love classic cars, automotive museums, and the stories behind the sheetmetal, this one is a must. We start with a tiny American Bantam woody and a surprisingly important thread in the Jeep origin story, then move to a restored Nash woody with period-correct wood patina and clever camping features like screen windows and a mattress setup. From there, we talk about a 1930 Ford Model A woodie known as a depot hack, essentially an early courtesy shuttle designed for train station pickups, and why driving old wood-bodied cars feels so different from anything modern. Then it gets wonderfully weird: we break down “early air conditioning” on a Ford Country Squire using a water-filled unit that cools while you're moving, and fogs things up when you stop. We also hit the collector reality check with Packard wood maintenance, a barn-find look at what happens when you skip the sanding and varnish, and a pint-sized Crosley tin woody with an unexpected tie to WWII technology. After that, Jeff drops Car Culture knowledge on the Indianapolis 500 Borg-Warner Trophy, and Mike shares five scenic drives around Houston, from the Blue Water Highway to the Bolivar ferry and a Lake Houston loop. A decade ago, he was instrumental in the passage of the JOBS Act, including the provisions that made Regulation Crowdfunding possible. In this episode, the discussion centered around the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities entrepreneurs face when raising capital through this regulated process.Woodie reflected on his journey advocating for Regulation Crowdfunding, beginning with a bold idea and leading to a historic signing ceremony at the White House. “When we started walking the halls of Congress…we kept on hearing one thing: you guys are never going to pull this off,” Woodie shared. Yet, through relentless focus and bipartisan collaboration, he and his team successfully convinced lawmakers that Regulation Crowdfunding could create jobs and significantly enhance access to capital. The experience of being at the signing of the JOBS Act was described by Woodie as surreal—a moment he'll never forget. “I remember sitting on the lawn of the White House…watching the president come out, talking about how, quote-unquote, this is a game changer. And we're pinching ourselves, going, I can't believe we pulled this off.” For entrepreneurs today, that game-changing legislation has opened new doors, enabling startups to raise funds directly from their communities. However, Woodie emphasized that success doesn't end with raising capital; compliance and communication with investors are equally crucial. He noted that many companies fail to meet the SEC's annual reporting requirements, which can harm both their reputations and future fundraising efforts. To address this, Woodie and his team developed carfiling.com—a tool designed to simplify annual compliance filings for entrepreneurs using Regulation Crowdfunding. For startup founders leveraging Regulation Crowdfunding, Woodie's story serves as both an inspiration and a practical guide. He transformed skepticism into groundbreaking legislation and continues to innovate within the space. Woodie believes that Regulation Crowdfunding is not just about democratizing capital—it's about fostering trust and accountability between entrepreneurs and their communities.tl;dr:Sherwood (Woodie) Neiss explained his journey advocating for the JOBS Act and Regulation Crowdfunding. He described the historic White House signing ceremony and bipartisan efforts behind the legislation.Woodie emphasized the importance of compliance for companies raising capital via Regulation Crowdfunding. He introduced carfiling.com, a tool designed to simplify annual reporting for entrepreneurs.Woodie highlighted his superpower—connecting—and shared personal insights on fostering human relationships. How to Develop Connecting As a SuperpowerWoodie described his superpower as “connecting,” and he shared a heartfelt, personal perspective on what that means. “When my son was three…he said, ‘I'm connecting to your love battery.'” For Woodie, connection isn't just about relationships; it's an energy that powers humanity. “We as humans rely on other humans…to recharge us in ways that bring validation to who we are.” Professional and personal connections—whether partnering with colleagues or recharging through family interactions—drive his purpose and success.Woodie's son Max provided the inspiration for the children's book The Love Battery, a metaphor on human connection. Max used to throw his legs over Woodie's belly at bedtime and explained, “I'm connecting to your love battery.” This heartfelt moment shaped Woodie's understanding of how vital connection is for sustaining energy, optimism, and creativity. The concept of the “love battery” now serves as a metaphor both for Woodie's personal life and his work, inspiring communities and encouraging collaboration.Tips for Developing This SuperpowerBe Present: Focus on where you are now, rather than always planning ahead.Acknowledge Others: Express gratitude to people around you through small, meaningful gestures.Balance Priorities: Recognize the importance of personal, professional, and health-related priorities equally.Encourage Collaboration: Build relationships that foster purpose and excitement in your work.By following Woodie's example and advice, you can make connecting a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Stay Cool This Summer!Guest ProfileSherwood (Woodie) Neiss (he/him):Principal, Crowdfund Capital Advisors and creator of CARfiling.comAbout CARfiling.com: CARFiling is a purpose-built software platform that streamlines the preparation of annual reports for companies that have raised capital through Regulation Crowdfunding. Send us a textFundraising doesn't have to be a black box or a waiting game. We sit down with Woodie, co-founder of Crowdfund Capital Advisors and a key architect behind the JOBS Act crowdfunding rules, to map a founder-first path that fuses data, community, and disciplined execution. From Wall Street to Silicon Valley to Washington, Woodie's journey reveals why regulation crowdfunding has unlocked billions for startups in thousands of cities—and how the next wave of “influestors” will power growth far beyond traditional venture hubs.We dig into investor sentiment as a real-time signal of demand: daily check counts, dollars committed, and momentum curves that predict funding velocity and downstream success. Then we get practical about valuations—why sober pricing wins, how to benchmark with a 10,000-offering dataset, and the milestone-driven cadence that earns step-ups. You'll hear the three signals Woody watches before any meeting, the pitfalls of algorithmic overconfidence, and where human diligence—team, moat, market timing—still decides outcomes. The conversation flips the script on marketing too. Customers who become investors don't just write checks; they evangelize, bring sales, and defend your brand in public. We share the playbook for turning a raise into a launch, engaging comment threads as social proof, and structuring cap tables that signal either viral scale (many backers) or strategic conviction (larger checks). Expect candid talk on time costs, legal prep, and the founder mindset required to tune out naysayers while staying responsive and transparent. If you're building outside the usual VC corridors or simply want smarter capital, this is your roadmap: calibrate valuation with data, engineer sentiment with story, prove revenue momentum, and let your community carry the signal. Shad Viciouz fka Shadow is a founding artist on Woodie's (RIP) East Co Co Records. He grew up seeing his hometown of Antioch turn from a quiet suburb into a gang war zone and became caught in the storm that left some of his friends locked up or dead from gun violence. In high school, Shad and Woodie started recording demo tapes together and developing their rap styles. Shadow became part of Guce's Straight Lace Mob in San Francisco, but eventually reconnected with Woodie to help him start East Co Co. They saw success through the release of the Northern Expozure compilation series, but Shadow was never able to complete his solo album. Since Woodie's mysterious death in 2007, Shad has kept his friend's legacy alive but is now set to release his newest solo album on his own terms and push for his rap career. For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail info@historyofthebay.com--History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aaOnline Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlAInstagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_oneTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_oneTwitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_oneFacebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone41500:00 Shad Viciouz03:54 Growing up in Antioch12:06 Childhood abuse leading to gang life23:50 West 20th Street 26:41 Norteños vs Sureños45:49 Snoop53:16 Antioch violence57:21 Blackbird1:07:42 First raps with Woodie1:12:38 Growing up with Woodie1:20:56 Guce & Straight Lace Mob1:35:12 Homeboy Rap1:39:57 East Co Co Records 1:46:34 Solo project1:50:47 Northern Expozure1:53:57 The Jacka, A-Wax1:57:41 Falling out with Woodie2:04:35 Woodie's death2:17:30 New solo album

The most exciting development for investors and entrepreneurs alike is how actionable insights, not just anecdotes or hype, are driving smarter decisions and better results. In this episode, Sherwood Neiss, Principal at Crowdfund Capital Advisors and one of the original architects behind the legislation that made regulated investment crowdfunding possible, shares his unique perspective. Sherwood's new book, Investomers, distills fourteen years of experience, offering a comprehensive look into what makes this industry tick and how anyone—investor, entrepreneur, or policymaker—can benefit. What sets Sherwood apart is a dedication to grounding everything in robust data. Early on, he recognized that the industry needed more than vision; it needed transparency and metrics. “From the minute this industry launched, we've been collecting information, not just on the companies and where they are and their financials and all that stuff, but every day, how much money has been committed to an offering and how many investors. With those data points, we can track what we call investor sentiment,” Sherwood explained. This relentless focus on measurement is not just academic. It empowers investors to make informed decisions and helps founders understand what drives successful campaigns. “The book is a lot of data-driven insights from the work that we've done with investment crowdfunding about the economic rationale for this,” Sherwood shared. He's created tools and reports that highlight where the signals for success are strongest, always encouraging readers and clients to dig into the numbers for themselves.Crucially, Sherwood's work is not just about numbers, but about democratizing access to capital and opportunity. “Many of the reasons for failure is lack of capital, which I'm hoping we're solving for with investment crowdfunding,” he noted, underscoring the human impact behind the data. For those eager to learn more or to leverage these insights in their own investing, Sherwood's company is not currently raising capital from the crowd but is focused on providing invaluable data and advisory services through Crowdfund Capital Advisors and their C-Clear platform. Investomers is available now, offering a blueprint for anyone who wants to invest smarter or build something meaningful in this rapidly evolving space.Sherwood's passion and open-handed approach to sharing what works—and what doesn't—make this episode a resource for anyone looking to turn data into a tool for empowerment and positive change.tl;dr:Sherwood Woodie Neiss shares how data-driven insights are transforming investment crowdfunding for investors and entrepreneurs. He reveals the story behind launching Crowdfund Capital Advisors and building a comprehensive industry database.Sherwood explains how his new book, Investomers, distills years of experience and research into actionable guidance. He describes his superpower: breaking big goals into small steps and using accountability to achieve them. The episode highlights practical strategies for making progress on major projects by leveraging data and discipline. How to Develop Relentless Follow-Through As a SuperpowerWoodie's superpower is his ability to say yes to opportunities and follow through by breaking daunting challenges into manageable steps. As Woodie described, “I am one of these people that I'm a yes man. So I am constantly saying yes, instead of saying, I'm sorry, no, I can't...you need to take anything that you're doing and break it down into 100 steps. And then do one of those a day...the principle of that, the theory behind it is break everything down into small chunks, so that you can accomplish something in a day, in a week or whatever, but it keeps the ball moving forward.”Woodie illustrated this superpower vividly by recounting how he managed to write a 400-page book, Investomers, while juggling his many professional responsibilities. He set a big goal at the start of the year, broke it down into about a hundred discrete steps, and methodically worked through them, bit by bit, over the course of the year. He even enlisted a friend as an accountability partner, meeting weekly to track progress, ensure he stayed on task, and remove nonessential items from his plate. This system helped him complete the book in just over a year while keeping all his other commitments moving forward. To cultivate relentless follow-through, Woodie suggests:Break large goals into small, actionable stepsSet regular milestones and track your progressFind an accountability partner who will meet with you weeklyBe willing to reprioritize and move less important tasks off your plateCommit to a schedule and honor it—treat your accountability meetings as non-negotiableBy following Woodie's example and advice, you can make relentless follow-through a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileWoodie Neiss (he/him):Principal, Crowdfund Capital Advisors, LLCAbout Crowdfund Capital Advisors, LLC: CCA is a data-driven investment crowdfunding consulting and advisory services firm.
