Episode 028: "Marriage and Ministry" Took some time to talk to my great friend Emma Mullings about striving for healthy marriages- especially when you do ministry or work with your partner! Such a great conversation in which she also taught us some of the practices she learned in therapy that helped her learn to fill the tank in her marriage! In every marriage you will have fights- ESPECIALLY if you are doing other things together (work, ministry, business) BUT there are ways to fight BETTER and most importantly, ways to repair after the fighting is done.
When you've got young kids, you can be distracted on Sunday's at church. With children pulling at your clothes, needing help on the toilet, in desperate need of their water bottle, and keen to go home, it can be hard to hold a conversation. But what happens if you're in full-time ministry, and the congregation is relying on you to preach, or walk with them through a crisis? In this episode we unpack one mother's experience of having four children, planting a church in another country, and the windy road that led her back to God after her own mother passed away. Are you tired of making a mess of things because you've been doing everything in your own strength? Today's episode will show you the way to freedom and how to become who you were meant to be, by surrendering. Emma Mullings wanted to die when she was young. It's not that she hated her life, it's that she terribly missed her mother who was taken from this earth when she was only 4 years old. In the darkest place you can be spiritually, her life was seemingly in a tailspin. Then she was approached by someone at a church near where she lived in Australia. She attended a few services, always leaving right before the altar call. Who wants to be "that gal" that needs to get saved? Of course, everyone knows it's you that's the biggest sinner in the room - or so said her pride at the time. But eventually, she relented, in her words, "running" to the altar to give her heart to Jesus. The troubled child suddenly had hope. She married a strapping young lad, a saint who patiently waited for Emma to work through the massive dysfunction she had known her entire life. She became an award winning success in the Australian music scene. Then her husband announced they were going to move to America to start a church. Not in the Bible Belt, where there are churches on every corner. Nope, she and her husband are now a light of the gospel in Miami, Florida...a modern Sodom and Gomorrah if there ever was one. It required a surrender and simple trust to take the next step following the lead of the Holy Spirit. In our chat with Emma, you'll hear: -When Emma made the decision to surrender to God's will in her life...04:45 -Dealing with tragedy in the family at a young age...07:00 -Wanting to die to be with mom...13:00 -Filling the God-shaped hole in her heart...19:00 -Overcoming dysfunction after coming to know the Lord...23:00 -How Emma and her husband came to move to the U.S. to begin a church...28:10 -Called to minister in modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah...31:00 -How to take the next step in uncertain times...35:30 -One thing about Emma most people don't know..42:00 Resources from this episode: "Called to be light in the darkness, not hide in the light from the darkness" historymakers.church Ready For Your Biggest Breakthrough?Find out exactly what stands between you and your biggest breakthrough and how you can achieve your next level of living.
