Two nights after the first Calgary show, The Tragically Hip walked back into the Scotiabank Saddledome and played the city goodbye. Ten years on, three fans who were in the building pass the night around the table with jD.Spencer from Calgary is back from the night one episode. This was his third show of the Man Machine Poem Tour and the last time he saw the band live, and he spent it with Alan and Chantel, old friends from ten years of Hitmen games and Saddledome nights. His friend Al's text said it best: heavy but celebratory, like we all knew what was happening but we chose to live in the moment.Julie from Calgary hadn't seen The Hip since 1997. The tickets were a first date anniversary present. Tonight's guest, Nick Pool, grew up on a farm in the hills of western Kentucky. As a kid, one of the things he looked forward to most was finally being old enough to deer hunt with his father and brother. His father had promised him that when he turned 11, he'd be old enough to join them.Bright and early on the second day of deer season, shortly after Nick's 11th birthday, his father walked him out to a tree stand Nick had built in a large section of woods near the family farm. Hidden within those woods was a secluded field, making it an ideal place to hunt. Nick settled into his stand before sunrise, and not long after the sun came up, he began hearing strange sounds. Immediately on high alert, he scanned the woods, trying to figure out what was making them.It wasn't long before he found out—and what he saw left him in complete shock. Standing before him was a 9-foot-tall Sasquatch!That incredible encounter wasn't the only experience Nick had with the family of Sasquatch that lived in the woods surrounding his family's farm. Over the years, he had many more encounters with them and eventually came to enjoy seeing them. Years later, however, he had a very different kind of experience—one involving another undocumented creature he encountered on a lonely back road. Unlike his Sasquatch encounters, this one wasn't enjoyable at all. In fact, that encounter is one of the reasons why Nick refuses to be in the woods alone, after dark now.Nick will be sharing all of those experiences on tonight's show. Stop letting a score-keeping world define your worth. Take one rep of courage you've been dodging. Step into your fear like a rocket ship. Catch one lie a day and answer it instantly with the truth of who God says you are. Tell one trusted brother what you've been hiding and share one fear you actually faced this week. Reflect nightly and ask yourself: Am I standing on truth more than yesterday? You are not the fear in your head; you are who your Maker says you are. Your worth is your foundation, your truth is your armor, and your courage is your proof. It is God, family, and the protection of your ecosystem at all costs. They caught it from about song four.For the final tour, a coworker — Kathy Thompson, ticket savant — tipped him off about the presale three days early. He landed what he calls the worst seats of his life and has never been happier about bad seats.Who They Went WithKirsten took her friend Natasha to night two, up in section 201; she had been on the floor for night one with her now-wife, who had never seen the Hip before.Seeing the tour from two different vantage points meant two different shows — and from the upper level she could suddenly see the teleprompters on stage.Chris invited both of the buddies from that very first show — one in Victoria, one living in France — and both had to bow out. His brother got the ticket, and the two of them have a lot of Hip history together.The Set ListOpens with "Blow at High Dough."Chris on the run of Courage / At the Hundredth Meridian / Wheat Kings / Fifty Mission Cap — four of his all-time favourites back to back. He told his brother he could have walked out happy right there.The deep-album slot that night: We Are the Same. Kirsten singles out "Now the Struggle Has a Name" — she still remembers the notes Gord hit — and talks about the mood of "Coffee Girl" and "Morning Moon."Chris is candid that the later records don't sit with him the way the early ones do, and names "An Inch an Hour" as the one that got away.Both were set-list watching night to night, trying to guess which album would get pulled next — and Kirsten notes what it meant for Gord to rotate the set at all, given how well known his struggles with lyrics were (see: "Cordelia" quietly disappearing from set lists for years).The EncoresEncore 1: Greasy Jungle → Scared → Grace, TooEncore 2: Fireworks → BobcaygeonKirsten on closing with "Bobcaygeon" instead of the usual barn-burner — phones and lighters up across the building, and Gord taking long moments to look out and take it in.Chris connects the "checkerboard floors" line to the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, and reads the closer as the band pointing back at where they started. He still goes to the Horseshoe every time he's in Toronto.Gord on StageThe eye contact — a recurring observation across this series. Kirsten notes Gord historically avoided looking at people because singing faces threw him off, and that on this tour the fourth wall came down.Her impression of him off stage from a brief meeting: quiet, soft-spoken, very funny, extremely thoughtful.Chris was struck by how minimalist the production was — no big screens, just five guys, a silver suit, the feather hat and the Jaws shirt.The honest part: Gord was visibly struggling in places, missing notes, with the band filling the gaps — and getting noticeably stronger night over night. Kirsten describes a collective will from the crowd pushing him through.The Last Night in the BarnThis was the final concert at Rexall Place / Northlands Coliseum before the move to Rogers Place — so the night carried a second goodbye.Chris and his brother started at the Vinyl Needle downtown (dinner, beers, and a Hip tribute band playing to a very envious crowd), then rode the LRT through pouring rain.Walking into a building he had been going to since 1980 and finding it stripped and sterile — memorabilia pulled down, replaced with deep-cut oddities like an old Edmonton Drillers photo.Kirsten on saying goodbye to a venue where she had seen Oilers playoffs, countless bands, and the Hip many times over.When It Hit"Courage." Chris looked left, looked right, looked down, looked at his brother — everyone was crying. First time he had ever cried at a concert.Kirsten describes it coming in waves, every night, over and over: this is it, this is the final tour.Chris screaming himself hoarse for one more encore — and getting it.Walking out: heavy, but joyful. There are two ways to look at this oil and gas announcement today. Aussie outfit EnZed Energy's been given the nod to go have a sniff around off the coast of Taranaki. That's important because they're the first company to be given that right since the Ardern ban. But there's already talk online about the fact this was the only application. There was nobody else applying for this permit, and it's just to have a poke around. Now, you would say this proves the point that there's not much interest and, therefore, why bother anyway? But what it actually tells you is people are still bloody scared of the ban coming back. With good reason. Labour and the Greens say they'll bring it back. I asked someone in the sector about this, and they said, "When that bulls*** goes away, we'll get more interest." There's apparently another handful of permits been applied for. But this Aussie start-up is the first, and they're basically the guinea pig. The test run. It's a small step on a long road to re-building an industry that's basically in pieces on the chopping room floor. The fact is, Labour doesn't need to be sitting in the Treasury benches to have power over industry. They're what corporates call a "regulatory risk". They don't like those. My question to Hipkins and co. is pretty simple - NSW has just gone out to market on two tenders for offshore gas exploration. Why should they get the jobs and not us? Why should they get the royalties and not us? Why should they get the company tax and not us? Last Tuesday, Trump announced 100% tariffs on generic medicines imported into the US. By Wednesday, Indian pharma stocks were already falling even though the tariff doesn't take effect for two years.Trump wants import companies to reshore their manufacturing to the US so that the country can secure life-saving medication in the event of global supply chain disruptions. India supplies nearly 50% of all generic medicines consumed in America — birth control, antidepressants, hypertension treatments. The companies most exposed say shifting manufacturing to the US in two years isn't realistic. Building a viable generics ecosystem there takes at least five.But someone has to absorb the cost. And Indian companies have already said that moving is not a realistic plan — for now. Which means the ones picking up the bill are not the ones Trump thinks. Somebody on that boat trip knows more than they're saying about what happened to Nolan Wells, and some of them are reportedly too scared to say it. Nolan was eighteen, a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College from Ocean Springs, Mississippi. On the Fourth of July he went out to Horn Island, an uninhabited barrier island roughly ten miles off the Mississippi coast, with a group of friends. No buildings, no fresh water, no service, just boats and coolers until the sun goes down and everyone heads for the mainland. His friends made it back. He didn't. A National Park Service ranger found his body in the water off the island's northwestern tip two mornings later. Roughly thirteen hours passed before help was actually requested. Investigators say they believe Nolan drowned, and they've also said they're still working to determine exactly what happened out there. A friend reportedly called the Coast Guard that night, and Nolan's mother, Christine Wonsley, called the sheriff's office shortly after. The sheriff's office said early on there was no foul play. His cause and manner of death still haven't been released. Tony sits down with Robin Dreeke to break down what it actually means when witnesses go quiet in a case like this, what a "no foul play" statement does and doesn't prove, and why silence from the people who were physically there is its own kind of evidence. Attorney Ben Crump is running an independent investigation for the family, and the district attorney says this is heading to a grand jury. Some witnesses have talked to investigators. Others reportedly haven't said much at all, and the family wants to know why. Fear doesn't mean guilt.
