War. Famine. Poverty. Violence. Natural Disasters. Working in humanitarian spaces puts us up close and personal with some of the worst kinds of evil and suffering. In the face of it all, we follow a God who is both all good and all powerful. How do those two realities compute? It's a quandary that has been around a long time and we've invited Southeastern University's Dr. Chris Palmer onto the show to help us think biblically and theologically when we're faced with the problem of evil. From the killing fields in Polpot's Cambodia to earthquakes in the Middle East, we wrestle the reality of pain while clinging to God's goodness and embracing the mystery. A.J. Swoboda is back on the podcast for the third time. This time we are sitting down to talk about A Teachable Spirit. He hit on something that I think is sorely missing in this world today: being teachable. In a world often drawn sharply into polarized camps, where dialogue seems overshadowed by ideological extremes, cultivating a teachable spirit becomes more than a virtue, it becomes an act of quiet revolution. But what exactly does it mean to approach life, faith, and community with genuine humility and openness, even when our convictions run deep? Our conversation explores what it truly means to possess a teachable spirit, how to stand firmly in our beliefs while also actively listening to, honoring, and learning from those who are different than us. We'll explore themes of humility, empathy, wisdom, discernment and the careful balancing act of maintaining convictions while remaining open to growth and change. This is an important conversation, so join us as we unpack the practice of discerning truth in a fragmented world, and how holding our beliefs can transform both our inner and outer worlds and enable us to have a teachable spirit. Rev. A. J. Swoboda (Ph.D., Birmingham) is the associate professor of Bible and Theology at Bushnell University. He served as a college pastor on the University of Oregon campus for nearly ten years. For another decade, he planted and pastored an urban church in Portland, Oregon, called Theophilus, which continues to worship today. He leads a Doctor of Ministry program around Spiritual Formation and Soul Care at Friends University. He has taught at the London School of Theology, LIFE Pacific, Southeastern University, and Multnomah University. He is the author of over ten books, including Redeeming How We Talk (Moody), After Doubt (Brazos), and the award-winning Subversive Sabbath (Brazos). He hosts the Slow Theology podcast (w. Dr. Nijay Gupta) and writes the widely read Low-Level Theologian Substack. This is Episode 65 of the Consortium Podcast, an academic audio blog of Kepler Education. In this episode, Sarah Abbott teaches the practice of "Navigating Stories with Students." Her talk provides criteria for classifying books by certain qualities and she provides examples of four kinds of stories that need to be negotiated: whole stories, broken stories, bent stories, healing stories. This talk was given at the 2024 Consortium conference in Maynard, MA on July 12-13, 2024. Kepler's Consortiums provide resources and regional connections for Christian families, teachers, and educational organizations to expand the reach of classical education and foster human flourishing for generations to come. The New England Consortium of Classical Educators (NECCE) exists to point New England to the unifying Truth found in Christ and His creation, the Good of fellowship with like-minded individuals, and the Beauty reflected in great works of literature, science, and art, through teaching, conversation, and conferences. Sarah Abbott is a classical educator and student with over twenty-five years of experience teaching, training, writing, coaching, and administrating. She serves as the Head of Outreach and Teacher Training for the Consortium, which allows her to do exciting things like lead a one-of-a-kind book club in her home and conduct trainings in classical pedagogy. Sarah is a Lecturer of Classical Education at Southeastern University and an Area Representative for Classical Conversations. Since graduating her homeschooled son, Sarah now devotes her time to learning about literature and the arts to discover connections between them and culture, and ultimately to uncover what it means to be human.

From meeting her mom at the age of 27 to meeting her birth father for the first time when he was 91 years old and leading him to salvation… friends, this episode is a front-row seat to God doing immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine. We talk about:— What it means to be anchored in identity through daily intimacy with the Holy Spirit— Why your miracle might look uncommon—and why that's a good thing— What happens when you stop getting stuck on unanswered prayers and start pursuing the yet-to-be-answered ones— The beauty of soaking in God's presence and learning His voice— How sacrifice and obedience can either unlock miracles—or hold them back— The hope that it will turn around. Donna Pisani, a pastor and Bible teacher with forty years of ministry experience, has a game-changing message for women leaders: the One who loves you most is cheering you on, has given you a voice, and already has a seat at the table waiting for you. A practical tool for women who are called to leadership roles in any area of life, Entrusted to Lead offers biblical insight and real-life encouragement for how to navigate their leadership journey. In Entrusted to Lead, Pastor Donna Pisani draws on over four decades of experience to offer a biblical perspective of women in leadership that considers their role an entrusted assignment rather than just an entitled position. Break 1: GON STORY 1: Mother Pleads Guilty To Murdering Son, Setting Apartment On Fire Azaria Shante Burton, 23, of Peachtree Corners, has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering her 5-year-old son, Jayveon Pruitt, and setting their apartment on fire to cover up the crime. Prosecutors revealed Burton stabbed her son 22 times before starting the fire in October 2023. She also pleaded guilty to charges including arson, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence. The Gwinnett County District Attorney condemned Burton's actions, describing them as a senseless act of violence against her own child. Despite being pregnant and facing eviction, Burton premeditated the murder, purchasing flammable gel and practicing setting fires. During the plea hearing, she showed no remorse despite multiple opportunities to address the court. STORY 2: Parkview Promotes Alum David Reynolds to Head Baseball Coach David Reynolds, a Parkview High School graduate and longtime assistant coach, has been named the new head baseball coach following the resignation of Chan Brown. Reynolds played under the legendary Hugh Buchanan and later coached alongside Brown, contributing to six state championships and three national titles during his tenure as assistant. Reynolds, also a former football player at Parkview, brings deep roots and a commitment to community, having spent his entire life in Lilburn. His dedication to Parkview and its baseball program, combined with his coaching experience and community ties, made him the natural choice for the position. Reynolds aims not only to continue the program's winning tradition but also to mentor young men in character development. His appointment reflects a continuation of Parkview's strong athletic legacy under his leadership. STORY 3: Man Shot, Killed Near Gas Station On Jimmy Carter Blvd. Gwinnett County police are investigating a fatal shooting outside a gas station on Jimmy Carter Blvd. A male victim was shot multiple times around 9 p.m., despite officers' attempts to save him. The incident occurred near a wooded area behind the station and was captured on surveillance video. The footage shows a suspect approaching a woman before another man arrives and fatally shoots him. Detectives, alongside the Crime Scene Unit and Medical Examiner's office, are conducting investigations. The victim's identity hasn't been disclosed, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact GCPD detectives at 770-513-5300. Michael Massey, a North Gwinnett alum and pitcher for Wake Forest, was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round. Corey Collins, another North Gwinnett graduate and standout at Georgia, went to the New York Mets in the sixth round. Conrad Cason, from Greater Atlanta Christian and a top high-school prospect, was picked by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round. Ramsey David, a Buford grad and pitcher at Southeastern University, was chosen by the Houston Astros in the tenth round. Their selections mark a milestone in their baseball careers, reflecting their talent and potential in professional baseball. STORY 5: Former Georgia Insurance Commissioner Sentenced To Prison Former Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for conspiring to commit healthcare fraud related to unnecessary lab testing. The scheme involved Oxendine and Dr. Jeffrey Gallups, who conspired to submit fraudulent insurance claims for tests like Pharmacogenetic and Molecular Genetic testing. These tests were medically unnecessary but were ordered to generate profits from insurers and patients, amounting to over $3 million in claims. Oxendine received kickbacks through his consulting business, which he used to make charitable contributions and pay legal fees, and he instructed others to lie to federal agents to cover up the fraud. STORY 6: Trump is ‘fine' and gunman dead after shooting at rally Former President Donald Trump was rushed off stage during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, after a shooter outside the event grounds caused panic with loud popping noises. Trump was seen grabbing his ear and later appeared with blood on his right ear, reportedly from an injury. He is described as "fine" and is undergoing evaluation at a local medical facility. The shooter is deceased, and there was one fatality and a critically injured person among bystanders. President Joe Biden condemned the violence, and law enforcement agencies including the Secret Service, FBI, and Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the incident. STORY 7: Parkview Baseball Coach Chan Brown Hired at Gainesville Longtime Parkview baseball head coach Chan Brown has accepted the head coaching position at Gainesville, marking a significant change after 20 successful seasons at Parkview. Brown, who took over from the legendary Hugh Buchanan, led Parkview to six state titles and three national championships. His decision to move was influenced by family considerations, including proximity to his son at the University of Georgia. Brown expressed gratitude to the Parkview community while Gainesville praised his leadership and commitment to developing both players and character. The move comes as Parkview faces its first coaching change in nearly 50 years, highlighting the end of an era for the program. We'll have final thoughts after this. Known for songs like, “How He Loves,” John Mark McMillan shares his thoughts on the important topic of how Christians should represent Christ's love in the Church. We'll discuss the challenge of connecting deeply with others who see the world differently and ask tough questions like: Are Christians losing sight of the radical love Jesus calls us to? Does cancel-culture have a place within Jesus' church? Should a Christian strive to have a soft heart toward every single person? These questions and more with John Mark McMillan. In the case of a tapestry, it starts as an idea. The weaver gathers the raw materials and the tools to work, prepares them, weaves them, and tamps them. Slowly, bit by bit, an image starts to appear; however, it's not until completion that the designer's vision is apparent.Randy Valimont wasn't sure what to make of the raw materials of his life. At first, he couldn't see how anything beautiful could be woven from some of the threads that made up his life: a birth mother who abandoned him without looking at his face and birth father who didn't even know he existed. However, in the hands of his heavenly Father, the Master Weaver, he saw the threads of his adoptive family's unwavering support and his own faith, natural talents, training, and perseverance intersect into an intricately woven tapestry.Author Jelly Valimont, widow of the late Dr. Randy Valimont, joins host Bridgette Tomlin to share his beautifully broken adoption story, the lessons she has learned in widowhood, and hope for women who are navigating to find their place in the work of the ministry.------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jelly Valimont is the widow of Dr. Randy Valimont, former pastor of Griffin First Assembly (GFA), an Encounter Life Network church. She was born in McMinnville, Tennessee into the home of a pastor and spent her PK life growing up in a Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia. While attending Southeastern University, she met and married the love of her life, Randy Valimont. The couple served in various ministerial roles in Arkansas and Georgia. In 1993, Randy and Jelly relocated to Griffin, Georgia, where Jelly continues to live. During their time in Griffin, Jelly has been involved in the local church in women's ministry, Celebration Choir, worship teams, and the ministry of costumes. She was also an administrative consultant for GFA during Dr. Valimont's tenure.Jelly has been used by God to speak in the local church and at conferences throughout the United States and internationally. She has written two books: I Have Issues and Tapestry: a Story of Adoption, Acceptance, and Destiny. Jelly's heart's cry is to do the will of the Father, wherever and whatever that might be, to bring souls into the Kingdom, and to facilitate spiritual health and well-being to the Body of Christ. Welcome to season nine of the podcast! This season, an "honest conversation about disability and the Church" will be hosted by Letiah Fraser. Her guest in this episode is Dr. Carlos Thompson! Here is a little more about Carlos: Bio: L. S. Carlos was born in the Latin American costal port city of Cartagena, Colombia. After being adopted by a North American family, he was raised in Fargo, North Dakota. Carlos has earned a B.S. in Church Ministry from Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida; an M.A. in Religious Studies from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida; as well as both an M.Th. in Ministry and Mission (Practical Theology), and a Ph.D. in Divinity, from the University of Aberdeen, King's College, in Aberdeen, Scotland. He is also a recipient of Western Theological Seminary's Henri Nouwen Doctoral Fellowship. WTS is also Dr. Carlos' community where he serves as the Assistant Professor of Church and Community Theology; the Director of the Friendship House Community; the Director of the Friendship House Fellows Program; and the Student Accessibility Coordinator. Dr. Carlos has served in various pastoral capacities for 15+ years and been engaged in the ministry of preaching for 20+ years in over 10 different denominations. Carlos identifies as a Charismatic-Reformed Pentecostal who lives with congenital Cerebral Palsy. Thus, the lived experience of disability informs and shapes Carlos' current research around the faithful development of Christian Communal Theology. Carlos is particularly interested in what it means for Christians to faithfully live into and express Jesus' healing ministry; what a biblically faithful definition of health might actually look like today; and the impact that these two subjects have on the relationship between community formation, bodily health, and Christian praxis. As a result, the following questions are foundational to Carlos' present research and spiritual reflection: what is it that makes a Christian community ‘Christian' and ‘communal'? What does it mean to be ‘healed'? How are Christians to understand ‘healing' in the midst of enduring disability and chronic illness? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/millennial-pastors/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/millennial-pastors/support
