Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants taking right-handed pitcher Dedniel Núñez from the New York Mets in the Major League portion of Thursday morning's Rule 5 Draft. Núñez has a fastball with characteristics that the Giants like, particularly after he displayed a jump in velocity in the Fall Instructional League. Núñez will be added to the Giants' 40-man roster and must be on the major league roster all season or else they must offer him back to the Mets. No Giants prospects were selected in the MLB portion of the Rule 5 Draft. Ben also talks about the results of the All-MLB Team voting. Mike Yastrzemski was named a finalist in the outfield, along with nine peers. Three were to be selected as First Team All-MLB outfielders, and three more were to be selected as Second Team All-MLB outfielders. Did Yastrzemski make either cut? Was he a snub? It's mid-November, and finally... some minor league scouting updates to discuss! Ian and Chris have the goods from the Fall Instructional League in Fort Myers, where 62 of the Red Sox' top farmhands spent 5.5 weeks. We've got who impressed and who disappointed with their showings. Plus, the guys preview who might be protected on Friday from selection in the Rule 5 draft (and how that list has changed based on Fall Instructs reports), who's playing abroad this winter, and of course, your emails. 0:00 - Intros, housekeeping, email us and remember to check us out on Patreon 6:10 - Rule 5 preview 21:00 - Offseason leagues 25:45 - Fall Instructs 1:06:00 - Mailbag Players Mentioned Bryan Mata Connor Seabold Conner Wong Jay Groome Eduard Bazardo Hudson Potts Jeisson Rosario Deivy Grullon Gilberto Jimenez Triston Casas Aldo Ramirez Brainer Bonaci Chris Murphy Brayan Bello Nick Decker Matthew Lugo Cameron Cannon Chih-Jung Liu Eduardo Lopez Darel Belen Eduardo Vaughan Juan Chacon Wilkelman Gonzalez Nick Yorke Blaze Jordan Shane Drohan Jeremy Wu-Yelland Brian Van Belle Jordan Divalerio We also want to thank our in-residence musical guest, The Ludlow Thieves. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants losing free agent Drew Smyly to a one-year, $11M deal with the Atlanta Braves. While it's disappointing to lose Smyly, the huge silver lining is that the Giants are proving to be very successful at rebuilding pitchers' values. First it was Drew Pomeranz, who joined the Giants on a one-year, $1.5M deal in 2019, only to sign for 4/$34M the following offseason. Next it was Kevin Gausman, who signed for 1/$9M and then got 1/$18.9M the following year. Smyly is yet another example of a low-cost Giants signing cashing in for a much higher payday the following year. This trend figures to help the Giants lure in upside pitchers in need of a rebound season. Also discussed on today's show is a rumor that the Giants are interested in free-agent starter Jake Odorizzi, and an update on the health of Giants prospect Alexander Canario. Canario dislocated his left shoulder in Fall Instructional League, and underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum. The Giants must add Canario to their 40-man roster by Friday or else they risk losing him in this December's Rule 5 Draft. Canario's injury complicates that calculus. On this episode of The Roundhouse, Curve broadcaster Garett Mansfield talks with power-hitting prospect Mason Martin about the differences and similarities between the 2020 alternate site in Altoona and the fall instructional league in Bradenton. Martin also details which fellow Pirates prospects impressed him the most this year and his feelings of getting to play against other teams by the end of instructs. Also find out more about his fitness routine and what he learned about hitting at PNG Field, like hitting homers off the roller coaster.
The sprint that was the 2020 season has drawn to a close, and while it may not seem like it, Chris and Ian had plenty to look back on. There were plenty of debuts to digest, so the guys looked back on the first taste of MLB for Bobby Dalbec, Tanner Houck, and others, plus examine what the team's (probable) positioning at number 4 in next year's draft really means. Meanwhile, what did we learn from the action at Sim City in Pawtucket? Is there anything to be gleaned from this experiment in player development? Who stood out? And baseball is not done yet - it's time for the Fall Instructional League, and we're breaking down the roster. Plus, as always, your superlative emails! Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants prospects headed to the fall Instructional League in Arizona. There was no minor league season in 2020, so the development these players will be able to undergo in the roughly one-month league will be vital. The Giants have more players heading to the Instructional League than any other team, with 66. They have so many players, in fact, that they will be the only club fielding two separate teams. There are eight teams in total that will compete in the east Phoenix area, with two of those teams being comprised of Giants prospects. So their players with play games against six other teams from rival organizations. This will be very different than what some Giants prospects experienced at the Alternate Site in Sacramanto this year, when they only played intrasquad games against each other. Many of the Giants' top prospects will attend the Instructional League, including several who were not at the Alternate Site in Sacramento. The Giants used the Alternate Site, which was limited in size, mainly for players who could contribute to the 2020 major league team, with a few prospects sprinkled in. The Instructional League, however, is littered with most of the Giants' best prospects, with the exception of Joey Bart, who cannot attend because he is on the club's 40-man roster. The Instructional League should be hugely important since there was no minor league season this year. It will be the best available opportunity for Giants prospects to face real competition that will somewhat resemble what they would have seen in a minor league season.
