Look around you. You might be reading this in your home. Or perhaps someone else's home. The point is we spend a lot of time in our homes, more so now than ever before (apart from that year we don't talk about).Listen to Country Life podcast on Apple PodcastsListen to Country Life podcast on SpotifyListen to Country Life podcast on AudibleThey are our own private spaces — reflections on ourselves, our styles, our opinions, our choices, our ideas. Every choice you make when it comes to your home, from the wallpaper to who you choose to share it with, is both an extension of yourself and often an extension of the world around you. Homes are something we look at most days, and yet something that we probably don't often think about all that often.I know this now because I spent 30 minutes talking to Sonia Solicari, the director of the Museum of the Home, who opened my eyes to what ‘the home' really means. At her museum, based in Hoxton in East London, the home is used to understand and explain history in a fascinating way. Through rooms, from a parlour in 1695 to what the living room of the future may look like, we can understand the world around us.These are just some of the fascinating insights from our talk. Another one is how Sonia explained to me how everyday objects often found in the home changed our lives. Did you know that the invention of the thermostat may have given rise to the moody teenager? There's a free little tidbit for you. It's been one of my favourite podcasts we've done and I would highly recommend you listen to the rest. There's even a bit where a squirrel interrupts me by staring at me through the window, but at the time of writing I've not yet heard the final cut, so I'm not sure if Toby left that bit in. The only way you'll find out now is to have a listen for yourself. And in doing so, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did (the podcast, not the squirrel).— James FisherEpisode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Sonia Solicari of the Museum of the HomeEditor and Producer: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Episode 179 of the Repent or Die Podcast, hosted by Junns the NBIC. In today's thought-provoking episode, we tackle a critical question: Why do Black Americans have no power in America? Join us as we delve into the historical and socio-economic factors that have contributed to this situation, exploring the systemic barriers and challenges faced by the Black community. But more importantly, we discuss a powerful answer: The loss of a collective pursuit of knowledge. Throughout history, knowledge has been a vital source of power and progress. When Black people actively sought and valued education and knowledge, significant strides were made towards empowerment and equality. However, in recent times, this pursuit seems to have diminished. In this episode, we explore how reclaiming the quest for knowledge can be the key to regaining power and influence in America. We'll examine the importance of education, self-awareness, and community efforts in overcoming systemic oppression and building a stronger, more empowered Black community. She leverages her unique blend of wellness and business expertise to craft customized programs that provide results-based tailored solutions for industry-specific stressors. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS How the COVID-19 pandemic brought to light more of the need for stress reduction. The power of introspection through meditations and mindfulness. How meditation is truly part of the beginning of knowing yourself. How theater is the study of expression and the opposite end of things, all of your emotionality. What the early exposure to death and dying opened up for Christina. "We don't have enough respect for being human and what we're built to do and not do." The power of being a good friend to yourself. Needing opposites: Needing distraction to practice focus. Needing doubt to practice faith. The Attentions of the Victim, the Warrior, and the Master. What kind of messenger are you? Why peace can be hard. The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Christina is, How has life's programming of your perception limited your understanding of yourself AND the world around you? Brick runs are a hot-topic among most triathletes. There's an assumption that you need to be running for a long time and / or at a high intensity once you're off the bike in a training ride. Not only is that not necessary, but it's most likely putting you at a hugely increased risk of injury for no added training benefit. But more importantly - it completely misses the most important aspect of the brick run. In this video I talk you through the exact, proven brick run training protocol we prescribe for our athletes and how to incorporate it into your own training. Frequency, pace, intensity, duration - I'll walk you through it all to ensure you're as prepared as possible to run off the bike in your IRONMAN or 70.3. * * * * * * * * SPONSORS * * * * * * * * Like what you heard in this show? Some time between the formation of the earth, and now, some human beings decided to draw some lines on the sand somewhere to define ‘our bit' of the earth and ‘their bit' of the earth. We now refer to these lines as borders. Journalist and author Jonn Elledge has always been fascinated by why and how this happens, and in this episode he joins the Country Life Podcast to talk about borders and his new book, The History of the World in 47 Borders. Listen to Country Life podcast on Apple PodcastsListen to Country Life podcast on SpotifyListen to Country Life podcast on Google PodcastsListen to Country Life podcast on Audible Jonn's fascination with borders made him think that the smart thing to do would be to write a book about them. 47 of them, specifically, which he claims can tell us ‘the history of the world'. We invited him on to the Country Life podcast to discuss just how the border came to be, what they mean, some weird ones, and the somewhat disturbing truth about why a lot of them are simply just straight lines. We answer important questions such as ‘why does Wales exist', what happened during the partition of India, and why most borders are a bit nonsensical, when you think about it. And at the heart of it all lies the great question: are national identities defined by their borders, or vice versa? To find out the answer, you'll just have to listen — and if you get to the end and still want to know more (including the answer to the question ‘why does landlocked Bolivia still have a navy?'), you can buy his book, which is available at all good bookshops (and some bad ones). 'The History of the World in 47 Borders' can be bought online here. Episode 99: Sean Stewart and (a) The Greek Hoplite Phalanx: The Iconic Heavy Infantry of the Classical Greek World by Richard Taylor & (b) Living Latin: Everyday Language and Popular Culture by Charlie Kerrigan ABOUT SEAN Sean Stewart is a seasoned historian, leadership consultant, and business trainer. With over 30 years of experience in studying and working in the history field, Sean's multifaceted expertise in history, sailing, and storytelling enables him to connect people with our shared human experience across millennia. Sean has been dedicated to unveiling the power of history to transform our present perspectives and inspire positive change. As a historical leadership excellence expert, he guides managers into becoming effective leaders by leveraging the lessons of the past. Sean's use of artifacts and compelling narratives serves as a powerful tool to illuminate history and shape cohesive, high-performing teams. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS When it comes to the issues we have, you can learn that (1) we've been here before and (2) you're not alone. Infusing ancient artifacts with essential leadership lessons An artifact in view is a lesson in view. "A Silent Coach." Leadership acting as a service. A leadership example from the 19th century Bobby/London Police Whistle. The power of going to find the story. Making what you learn relevant for others. Human Interaction & Understanding --> Overcomplicating Everything vs. Going Back To Basics Why we shouldn't write off the people -- or the stories -- of 98% of us who came before modern society as we know it. The two level of how you enrich yourself by extracting modern lessons from ancient history. What would you write on your own epitaph? "Act now so you deserve your own epitaph later." "We need in the modern world a built-in structure where we give people the chance to take a breath and we don't have that anymore." "What connects us to antiquity or the Middle Ages is more than what separates us." Why the word "history" should be a verb rather than a noun. "Uncertainty is where leadership lives." In this video we talk through ways that you can swim faster in open water without necessarily having to improve your swim fitness. Many triathletes struggle to translate their pool speed and improvements into the open water. There are lots of different variables to consider when it comes to open water swimming vs pool swimming. From ensuring your wetsuit helps rather than hinders your body position in the water ... ...to your ability to sight well and swim in a straight line... ...to learning how to draft effectively off of other swimmers' feet. I also explain our top tips for drills to practice in the pool that will help get you "open water ready". Covering everything from breathing exercises to body position to maximising the power and effectiveness of your catch and pull. I'm sure after watching this video you'll feel much better equipped as you venture into the open water for the first time in a while, and will be ready to translate those hard-earned speed gains from the pool! * * * * * * * * SPONSORS * * * * * * * * Like what you heard in this show?
