Episode 358 features fascinating conversations with acclaimed barbecue writer and Texas Monthly barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn and former Major League Baseball pitcher Doug Sisk, whose nine-year MLB career included a memorable run with the New York Mets and much more. Daniel Vaughn is one of the most influential voices in American barbecue and the longtime Barbecue Editor for Texas Monthly. In 2013, Daniel became the first full-time barbecue editor at a major American magazine, a position he continues to hold today. Vaughn first made his mark with his barbecue blog, Full Custom Gospel BBQ, where he documented his travels throughout Texas in search of great smoked meat. His work eventually led to his acclaimed book, The Prophets of Smoked Meat: A Journey Through Texas Barbecue. As Texas Monthly's Barbecue Editor, Vaughn has traveled thousands of miles eating, reviewing and documenting barbecue across Texas and beyond. He oversees the magazine's legendary Top 50 Barbecue Joints in Texas list, one of the most influential rankings in the barbecue world.  In 2026 he was named number one on Underseasoned BBQ's list of the 150 Most Influential People in BBQ, further recognizing the enormous impact he has had on the way barbecue is judged, discussed and celebrated. On this episode we talk with Daniel Vaughn about his journey from architect and barbecue blogger to one of the most respected barbecue journalists in the country, his travels in pursuit of great barbecue, and the people and traditions that make American barbecue such a fascinating part of our culture. Doug Sisk is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who spent nine seasons in the big leagues, most notably as a member of the New York Mets' pitching staff during their unforgettable 1986 World Series championship season. A right-handed reliever known for his sinking fastball, Sisk was particularly effective at keeping the ball in the ballpark—he surrendered just 15 home runs in more than 500 innings during his Major League career. A native of Washington state, Doug attended Green River Community College and Washington State University before signing with the Mets as an amateur free agent in 1980. He made his Major League debut with New York in 1982 and went on to pitch for the Mets, Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves. His career totals include a 22-20 record, 3.27 ERA, 33 saves and 523⅓ innings pitched. Doug was an important member of the 1986 Mets, appearing in 41 games during the championship season. He also pitched in the World Series, helping the Mets capture one of the most memorable championships in baseball history. On this episode Doug Sisk takes us back to his playing days, his journey to the Major Leagues, and his experiences with the 1986 New York Mets. He shares stories from inside one of baseball's most legendary clubhouses and reflects on his career, teammates and the unforgettable run to a World Series championship. The Atlanta Braves completed a sweep of the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers at Truist Park on Thursday night. The game featured a matchup between Chris Sale and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and while the latter threw a great game, it was the 2024 NL Cy Young Award winner who stood out with a complete-game shutout. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman talk about what was a career-defining outing from Chris Sale against the Dodgers, one that felt very much like a throwback performance from starting pitchers of old. They discuss the excitement of hopefully getting to see Sale pitch in the postseason again after he was injured during the Braves' last playoff run and whether he can possibly add another Cy Young to his trophy case. Jake and Jordan also talk about Tarik Skubal returning to Detroit this weekend to face his old club, Shohei Ohtani eyeing a return to the mound on Sunday and why the Dodgers losing Roki Sasaki to the IL comes with unfortunate timing. The guys then welcome Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers to discuss his incredible turnaround this season, playing behind Jacob Misiorowski and getting Aaron Judge out as a position-player pitcher. They then close the show by making their picks for this week's The Good, The Bad and The Uggla. 1:41 - The Opener: Chris Sale's complete-game shutout 16:59 - Could the Braves and Dodgers meet in October? 24:09 - Skubal, Ohtani and Roki updates 33:36 - Jake Bauers joins the show 49:29 - Playing with Jacob Misiorowski 58:40 - The Good, The Bad & The Uggla Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:

We start off with a heated debate with Dale Jr. and producer Travis on Dirty Air about how Trackhouse wound up with three drivers, all with contracts ending in 2027.  Following that up, Chase Briscoe remembers the time when he wrecked Denny Hamlin battling for the lead at the Indy Road Course in 2021, and why he's willing to take a lie detector test over it. On this week's guest episode, Dale Jr. sits down with Jody Davis, former Major League baseball player and friend of his dad's. Jody remembers the first time he met the Intimidator and the time he went over the wall for him on his pit crew. In the land of Bless Your 'Hardt, Amy & Dale Jr. chat about Cleetus McFarland's get-up for his dinner with Dale Jr. at the local steakhouse ... and why Dale was not expecting it (but he should have!) And lastly, Noah Gragson and Zane Smith joined Door Bumper Clear, and during Reaction Theatre, Noah shares a story of a fan who cussed him out, thinking that he was actually Zane. Dale Earnhardt Jr. sets out to learn more about his father as he sits down with longtime Earnhardt confidant and former MLB catcher Jody Davis. Jody had an MLB-record setting career as the man behind the plate, spending time with the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves before retiring in the early 90s. It was during his time on the Cubs that he'd meet Dale Earnhardt Sr., through a connection with Wrangler Jeans. He'd find himself at the 1986 NASCAR Cup season finale at Atlanta, where coincidently Dale Sr. would win his second championship. The two quickly bonded over their love of the outdoors and made off-season plans in Montgomery, Alabama to go hunting. Dale Jr. and Jody reminisce about Dale Sr.'s competitive and daring nature. They also discuss the time Jody spent on the road with the famed No. 3-team as an over the wall pit crew member. The conversation also covers Jody's career through the minor leagues after being drafted as a freshman in college, his memorable seasons with the Cubs, and his post-playing career as a team manager all over the world.
