SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington, Evan Grant and David Moore discuss [2:49] the Mavs' finishing debacle. David wonders if the commissioner could take away the Mavs' hard-earned first-round pick as a penalty for tanking. Evan says the Kyrie Irving deal blew up in the Mavs' faces because they didn't win in a weakened West. [22:35] Kevin says the fact that Jake Odorizzi is out for the season and no one's hardly noticed says everything about the job Chris Young did putting this Rangers roster together. Evan wants to see the guys down on the farm ready to jump in for spot starts this summer, and they're not off to good starts. [44:48] David breaks down some of the top prospects and the Cowboys' potential interest come the NFL draft at the end of this month. And, if Bijan Robinson is available at 26, the guys say the Cowboys should take him. Take that, Tim Cowlishaw!

The first edition of our six-part 2023 MLB Preview Series is out now! Join chief meteorologist of Newswest 9 in Odessa, Texas Anthony Franze and Jack Vita rousing discussion on the American League West, as we approach Opening Day. They share their projected win totals for all five AL West teams.First, Anthony and Jack discuss the new rules and changes coming to Major League Baseball in 2023, such as the pitch clock, restrictions on defensive shifts, and the 'ghost runner' extra innings rule that is now here to stay permanently. Anthony and Jack share their thoughts on the new rules (0:00 - 11:00). Then, they put Anthony's beloved Texas Rangers under the microscope. The Rangers had a very active offseason in which they entirely made over their pitching staff, signing Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Andrew Heaney and Jake Odorizzi. The Rangers finished 68-94 in 2022, after spending big on free agents Marcus Semien, Corey Seager and Jon Gray. Will they turn a corner and return to the postseason in 2023? (11:00 - 33:15). Next up, the Oakland Athletics. The A's finished 60-102 in 2022. It was the first time the A's lost 100 games since 1979. Jack and Anthony provide an outlook for the A's, after the club traded away star catcher Sean Murphy (33:15 - 46:50). The Los Angeles Angels have greatly disappointed in recent years, failing to finish above .500 in each of their last seven seasons. Can 2023 be different, after the club added Tyler Anderson, Hunter Renfroe, Gio Urshela and Brandon Drury? (46:50 - 1:01:30). The Houston Astros are the reigning 2022 World Series champions. The Astros have won the AL West in every full, 162-game season, since the start of 2017. After Justin Verlander departed as a free agent, and the Astros signed Jose Abreu, will the Astros continue to reign supreme in the West? (1:01:30 - 1:10:15). Finally, the Seattle Mariners, on paper, appear to present the greatest challenge to the Astros in the division. The Mariners led the Astros in Game 1 and Game 2 of the ALDS last October, and took the Astros to 18 innings in Game 3, but still were swept by the Astros. The Mariners appear to be closing the gap. Will they win their first division title since 2001, in 2023? Anthony and Jack discuss (1:10:15 - 1:29:15). Then, The Funny 115's Mario Lanza shares his Mariners outlook for 2023. Mario, our unofficial Seattle sports guy, has submitted a Mariners preview for the AL West preview show for three straight years now. Find out where Mario projects the M's to finish this season (1:29:15 - END). You can follow Anthony (@AnthonyFranzeWX) and Mario (@MarioJLanza) on Twitter.
Grey and B_Don (basically Grey couldn't find anyone better, yet) are back for the 2023 season! We're here to jump into the moves from the winter meetings. We start the podcast with Aaron Judge re-signing and some discussion about the different baseballs in use last season, and well, we rant a little bit... Then, we move on to the signings. We talk about Trea Turner heading to Philadelphia and the Bryce Harper injury news. The Rangers bolstered their pitching rotation with Jacob deGrom, Andrew Heaney, and Jake Odorizzi, but how interested are we in them? The Mets followed suit and added to their rotation with Justin Verlander and Jose Quintana. We go on to talk about the other signings including Jose Abreu, Xander Bogaerts, Willson Contreras, Mitch Haniger, Josh Bell, and the other meaningful-ish signings.
Rick Strickland is the Cubs AA hitting coach and the owner of Train Right Academy in St Louis. He has coached travel teams and was a former Yankee draft pick. When Rick Strickland broke his hand in his Junior year of college at Austin Peay, he was Top 10 in the nation in Batting Avg. and Stolen Bases. It was a blow missing the season, but like he tells his players when one door closes, another opens. He got a chance to play in the Cape Cod League with some amazing talent. “I played with great players and future Hall of Famers. Frank Thomas, Mo Vaugh, Tim Salmon, Jeff Kent, and Denny Neagle. Playing with top talent elevates your game and your mind” Rick came back and tore it up his Senior year leading the team to its first winning season in a decade and helping turn the program around. “The leadership, that's what really stays with me. What the team and I helped do for the program was immense.” Rick's standout play caught the attention of the Yankees, who drafted him. After spending time in their farm system, Rick brought his passion for player development and innovation to coaching. Rick is driven by improving players and helping them battle through challenges – mental and physical. “If you want to hit hard or throw hard, you have to train hard. You have to push your past what you think you can do to achieve more.” Baseball is a game of speed and power. What you do in the gym, will show on the field. His obsession with making improvements and player feedback took him down the technology path, where he has been a pioneer. He worked in early-stage development with Blast Motion, Rapsodo, Diamond Kinetics, and Uplift. A true student of the game, Rick grew up in Chicago as a two-way guy – a player AND a sports reporter. “Starting at 6 years old, I played constantly, but I also had to give my uncle complete recaps of the Cubs and White Sox games. I was his ESPN. What was the score? How did they get their runs? I had to tell him the story behind the game.” After years of playing, coaching, and “reporting,” Rick can readily spot the story behind each player's swing and throw. For him, and the CRTR staff, understanding how a player moves in training and practice is key to unlocking how they will perform on the field. Their collective job is to make players better. With over 375 college commits, 78 professional players, and 2 All-Stars in Andrew Benitendi and Jake Odorizzi, Coach Strickland's obsession with player development is the centerpiece of every training program. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/playballkid/message
