Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin, Evan James and Kate Preusser are joined by Zach Mason to talk Mariners on an icy day in Seattle, January 17th 2024. Nothing major has happened in Mariners world since we last talked, but a few smaller pieces have come into the fold that are worth mentioning: Local legend Austin Voth signed a one year major league deal and looks to take on the swing role in a battle with Desclafani. Former Angel and Astro Ty Buttery signed a minor league deal as he looks to compete for top spot in the bullpen pile. Ditto Joey Krehbiel, Jhonathan Diaz, Kirby Snead and Mauricio Llovera, as the pile begins to take final shape. Perhaps most intriguingly of all, the Mariners signed Michael Chavis to a minor league deal, who looks to be a depth option in the infield, but he mahy shortest path to playing time of the non major leaguers. Lastly the Mariners partook in the International Draft and came away with two prospects they feel like have major league ceilings: SS Dawel Joseph and Leandro Romero, as well as at least 6 other players. Which names will you need to remember as future stars? And who makes it out of the pile to the top of the bullpen stack? Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! The Nats ended their 5 game losing streak by edging Milwaukee 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in extra innings. Mark (From **Miller Park) & Tim begin with Michael Chavis, who spearheaded a game ending double play to escape a bases loaded jam. Chavis was not in the starting lineup, but stayed at 1B after pinch running for Dom Smith in the 9th inning. (09:20) The Brewers are on the verge of winning the NL Central, but the numbers suggest they have a similarly modest offense as the last place Nationals. Both teams for instance only have one player with over 20 HRs (Thomas/ Adames). (16:40) Patrick Corbin only gave up 1 run in 6 IP and briefly on Sunday he found his ERA below 5.00. Mark handicaps how Corbin fits into the team's plans for his upcoming final season under contract. (25:05) It's the first September that Washington has experienced the overlap of Nats & Commanders since the football team changed hands. Will there be a new relationship between the 2 organizations? The "Trea Turner Play" somehow resurfaced in a game between the Nats and Astros in Minute Maid Park and this time it was the final sequence of a 5-4 Nationals loss. A bewildered duo of Mark (Live from Texas) & Al recap all angles of the controversial no call; including Davey Martinez's postgame rant that won't be forgotten any time soon. Why can't runner interference be reviewed? (17:00) The bottom of the 9th only came to be after Washington rallied with three runs in the top of the 9th to force a tie. Dom Smith came through with a game tying RBI triple, but his pinch runner Michael Chavis never came across to score. Smith has four hits in the past three games; after not starting at 1B on Saturday. (21:20) Josiah Gray lasted seven frames, but allowed four runs in the process. He has now thrown 7 IP on three occasions this season and did not issue any walks on Wednesday night. Mark explains how Gray has added a new array of pitches to his skill set. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Nats losing streak is up to six games after falling 6-4 in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon. Al summarizes MacKenzie Gore's start where the lefty gave up five runs in as many innings. Gore's ERA is now above 4.00 (4.04) and he has not earned a victory since April. (08:20) Lane Thomas doubled and tripled on Saturday in Georgia. Hear Al point out a staggering 1st inning Lane Thomas statistic. (14:30) Michael Chavis started at 1B as Dom Smith was given a rare day off. Smith has been at 1B for the Nationals for every game since late April, but he made a poor defensive play in the pivotal 8th inning of Friday's loss. The Nats ralled in California to beat the Angels 6-4 on Monday evening after trailing early on by three runs. Al & Mark (Live from Anaheim) begin with the bullpen's sterling effort, as the staff combined for four shutout frames. Hunter Harvey really came through as he struck out both Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. This was the opposite of Sunday in Colorado where the 'pen couldn't hang on to the three run lead. (10:30) Patrick Corbin lasted five innings and ended on a high note as he retired eight of the final nine batters he faced. Calling the shots in this series opener was Bench Coach Tim Bogar as Davey Martinez was under the weather. Corbin earned the victory, his first since September 3rd, 2022. (16:00) The offense came through with 14 hits and in typical fashion for this team, a dozen of them were singles. Victor Robles came through with two hits and he is now hitting .412. (21:00) Mark gives an update on Luis Garcia who did not play for a 3rd straight day as Michael Chavis got the nod at 2B. The Nationals will face Ohtani's right arm on Tuesday and it will be telling to see if Garcia returns to the lineup or not. (26:30) Hear a day in the life of a sports reporter as Mark talks about his hectic travel schedule on Monday morning between Denver and Anaheim. Learn more about your ad choices. The Nationals were swept by the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 7-2 as Patrick Corbin is now 0-2 on the season. Al Galdi solo hosts this edition and recap the lefty's outing; which did include a string of retiring 11 straight, but also plenty of runs allowed. (09:00) The Nats stranded the bases loaded in the 4th when trailing 3-2. Hear what Davey Martinez said about his young nucleus and their evolving plate approaches. (12:45) Al discusses why Luis Garcia sat for a 2nd straight game and what went into the managerial decision. Michael Chavis in his place did knock in his first run with the Nationals. Tonight was one to those games where the boxscore doesn't tell the whole story. JT Brubaker lasted 6.1 innings and gave up 6 earned, but everything to the 5th inning was excellent. His slider was extremely effective and he was shutting down a top lineup in the Braves. However, in the 5th inning he gave up 6 straight hits while 5 of them were hit with an exit velocity over 100mph. At the end of the day, it ends up being a start JT wishes went differently. As the story goes, the offense was once again anemic. Michael Chavis' solo shot off Max Fried was the only run as well as a third of the Pirates total hits. Fried shut down this offense quickly and efficiently tonight. Which, again, leads to ask where players like Travis Swaggerty are?
What can words do? Well, since Dennis Eckerlsey called out the Pirates team as being a hodgepodge of nothingness the offense has scored 16 runs in their last three games. Tonight, they not only had 5 runs, but they contributed towards it with 13 total hits. All but one starter had at least one hit, while Kevin Newman, Greg Allen, Bligh Madris, and Ben Gamel each enjoyed a multi-hit game. Though he had a terrible base running blunder that could've cost the lead, Ben Gamel redeemed himself at the plate with 3 total hits as well as a HBP in the 9th. It was Kevin Newman's second hit that gave the Pirates the lead in the 9th and then Michael Chavis' clutch hit vs. a lefty that ultimately won the game.Bryse Wilson did enough to keep the team in the game as he gave up 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 home runs. What am I making out of Bryse Wilson so far? Well you will hear just how he ultimately is opening my eyes ever so slightly.
Today was the return of Roansy Day, however it did not go as well as hoped. After a really good first inning, Roansy found trouble in the second as he appeared to lose command. He finished today going 6 innings pitched while giving up 4 earned runs.It was another anemic day for the offense mostly. A monster home run by Bryan Reynolds kicked off today's scoring as he made sure to remind Dennis Eckersley what his name is. Later, a big double by Michael Chavis vs. his former team added the third run of the game which wrapped up the scoring. A not so hot start, a 1-24 stretch for the offense, bad bullpen performances, and more questionable decisions like not pinch hitting for Kevin Padlo pretty much sums up today's game.
It's becoming laughable that Michael Chavis isn't the everyday first baseman. What more can be said about JT Brubaker since incorporating his 2-seamer? He has quite possibly one of his best starts going 7 scoreless innings with 9 punch outs and just 5 baserunners. He didn't have much offense behind him as Ben Gamel's RBI single was the lone run JT was able to get while on the mound. However, things started to get crazy in the 9th and then extra's with the Mickey Mouse rules. Michael Chavis ties it up in the 9th to get the game into extra's. Then the wheels fell off. Daniel Vogelbach and Ke'Bryan Hayes each had an RBI to bring the Pirates lead at 4-2. David Bednar entered the game to close things down, however he wasn't missing bats and ultimately gave up the lead as well as the game.

Today with the doubleheader, the Pirates split in Cincinnati. Neither game was much offensively. In total, they scored 5 runs on 12 hits. Daniel Vogelbach continues hit hot streak while Michael Chavis looks keeps wrecking havoc on left handed pitching. Both starters today looked very good. Bryse Wilson had his best start of the year while lowering his ERA almost a full run. Roansy may have had his best outing of the year, although that didn't award him his keep in this rotation. Shortly after the game it was announced that he was optioned. Listen as we discuss why there is a true reason to monitor his innings but also what bothers us so much about this decision.
After a game where one reliever threw 56 pitches, Bryse Wilson knew he was going to have to give innings today whether they be good innings or bad. Luckily, they were good. With increased velocity, Wilson went 6 strong innings to earn his first win of the year. Is this the makings of something new for Wilson?A shaky David Bednar came into the 9th to close it out as he walked the first batter on four straight pitches. However, Bednar settled nicely and looked more like his old self as he retired the next three batters.Offensively, this was a solid team performance where everyone chipped in. Oneil Cruz and Michael Chavis each went deep. Outside of the 112 mph laser Cruz put into the stands, there were a few other things that were almost just as impressive we tell you about. Diego Castillo also continues to make his case to keep him on the MLB roster
Mitch Keller continues his 2-seam tour in Tropicana Field today and the results were pretty okay. Though he gave up 3 in the 2nd, he held it together and now has a 2.98 ERA since incorporating the 2-seamer. We talk similarities in today's start from another which leaves us very encouraged. The strikeouts continue to be a huge problem for this team as they finished with 17. Thankfully, the long ball played as Michael Chavis, Hoy Park, and Diego Castillo each hit them. Chavis just keeps continuing to impress vs. lefties while showing he is more than capable of a defender. Oh, speaking of defense, Oneil Cruz put together another solid defensive performance.
Who says Michael Chavis is too old to be part of the future? Hear award-winning columnist Dejan Kovacevic's Daily Shots of Steelers, Penguins and Pirates -- three separate podcasts -- every weekday morning on the DK Pittsburgh Sports podcasting network, available on all platforms: https://linktr.ee/dkpghsports Learn more about your ad choices. It was a revenge game for Jose Quintana as he faced his former team and he didn't disappoint. It was, however, a disappointing outing for Will Crowe. Tonight, we discuss these performances as well as the bullpen usage. Should Wil Crowe have stayed in for as long as he did and was the correct move going to David Bednar over Yerri De Los Santos? The offense stayed alive today as well. Oneil Cruz continued his streak of RBI's. Ke'Bryan Hayes hit a laser over the left field notch while also scoring the winning run in today's contest (and yes, it appears he is ok). However, it was Michael Chavis who had a big day. We tell you why it was his defense that stood out the most.We also talk about the upcoming roster moves the Pirates will be faced with as a plethora of players are close to their return. Which guys will remain in Pittsburgh and which are likely going to be off the 40-man completely? Tune in and listen.
NBA – Pistons draft Ivey at No. 5 and acquire No. 13 pick Duren The Detroit Pistons have selected Purdue’s Jaden Ivey with the No. 5 overall pick in the NBA draft. Detroit’s rebuilding plan should get a boost with the addition of the dynamic player. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Ivey can play point or shooting guard. The busy team acquired Memphis center Jalen Duren, who was drafted No. 13 overall by Charlotte and traded to New York. Detroit also added Knicks guard Kemba Walker in exchange for a 2025 first-round pick it acquired the previous day. NBA – Chicago Bulls take Arizona guard Dalen Terry at No. 18 The Chicago Bulls drafted Arizona guard Dalen Terry with the No. 18 pick, adding size and versatility in the backcourt as they try to take another step after making a big jump to reach the playoffs for the first time in five years. The 6-foot-7, 195-pound Terry averaged 8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 steals as a sophomore in coach Tommy Lloyd’s first season. Owning a 7-foot wingspan, he can guard multiple spots. Kremer struck out four and walked one in his second straight scoreless outing and fourth start since returning from a strained right oblique on June 5. Jorge Lopez entered with one out in the ninth and fanned Tim Anderson and Andrew Vaughn for his 12th save. Pirates 8, Cubs 7 – F/10 – Chavis stars with bat, defense, Pirates edge Cubs in 10 Michael Chavis hit a tying home run in the eighth before pulling off a defensive gem and delivering a game-ending single in the 10th, sending the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Chicago Cubs 8-7. Chavis’ solo homer made it 7-all after the Cubs scored five times in the top of the eighth. In the 10th, Chavis charged a slow grounder by Jason Heyward toward first base and threw out Patrick Wisdom at the plate. The call stood after a Chicago challenge. In the bottom half, Chavis blooped a single to right and automatic runner Ke’Bryan Hayes scored in a collision with catcher Wilson Contreras. Hayes remained down for a few moments before walking off under his own power. Hayes homered earlier in the game. Texas is currently in the Big 12, but is moving to the SEC no later than the 2025 season. Olympics – Salt Lake City Winter Olympics bid more likely for 2034 Recent meetings with the IOC have led U.S. officials to believe all signs point toward Salt Lake City bidding for the 2034 Winter Olympics, though they say Utah’s capital will be ready if asked to host the 2030 Games, too. U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee chair Susanne Lyons said she views Salt Lake City as the leading candidate for the 2034 Olympics, and that the complexities of hosting 2030 only two years after the Summer Games in Los Angeles make it a less-likely scenario. Horse Racing – NYRA suspends Baffert 1 year; eligible to return in January The New York Racing Association suspended trainer Bob Baffert for one year Thursday for repeated medication violations. A panel credited Baffert for time served from an initial suspension that makes the two-time Triple Crown-winning trainer eligible to saddle horses in New York again by late January. The ban is shorter than the two-year suspension Churchill Downs handed Baffert after Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit tested positive for a substance that is not allowed on race day. Baffert’s camp asked for a stay of the NYRA suspension that was immediately denied. NBA – Pistons draft Ivey at No. 5 and acquire No. 13 pick Duren The Detroit Pistons have selected Purdue's Jaden Ivey with the No. 5 overall pick in the NBA draft. Detroit's rebuilding plan should get a boost with the addition of the dynamic player. The Pistons added Italian guard Gabriele Procida, who shot 38.3% on 3-pointers for Bologna. The 6-foot-7, 195-pound Terry averaged 8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 steals as a sophomore in coach Tommy Lloyd's first season. Owning a 7-foot wingspan, he can guard multiple spots. And on offense, he can play on or off the ball. Chicago did not have a second-round pick as it was forfeited for a tampering violation. NBA – Magic take Banchero 1st, Holmgren, Smith follow in NBA draft The Orlando Magic selected Duke freshman Paolo Banchero with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. After leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four in coach Mike Krzyzewski's final season, the 6-foot-10 forward was called first by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to begin the draft, beating out fellow first-year forwards Jabari Smith Jr. and Chet Holmgren. Banchero, wearing a purple suit full of bling, received a loud ovation inside Barclays Center, where Duke lost in the ACC Tournament final. Notre Dame freshman Guard Blake Wesley went 25th overall to San Antonio. Michigan had forward Caleb Houston go to Orlando at 32nd overall, his Wolverine teammated Moussa Diabate was taken 43rd overall to the LA Clippers. Michigan State guard Max Christie was taken by the Lakers with the 35th overall pick. Chavis' solo homer made it 7-all after the Cubs scored five times in the top of the eighth. In the 10th, Chavis charged a slow grounder by Jason Heyward toward first base and threw out Patrick Wisdom at the plate. The call stood after a Chicago challenge. In the bottom half, Chavis blooped a single to right and automatic runner Ke'Bryan Hayes scored in a collision with catcher Wilson Contreras. Hayes remained down for a few moments before walking off under his own power. Hayes homered earlier in the game. That word from Hawkeyes coach Lisa Bluder. The 5-foot-7 guard from Midland, Michigan, was a three-year starter for the Chippewas and led the team last season with 18.6 points and 4.7 assists per game. She has scored at least 10 points in 67 games, including a career-high 33 points against Ohio in the 2021 MAC Tournament semifinals. Davis will have two season of eligibility because of the COVID-19 bonus year. NCAAFB – Raise makes Ohio State’s Day one of highest-paid coaches Ohio State plans to hike Ryan Day’s annual salary to $9.5 million as part of a two-year contract extension that will put him among the nation’s highest-paid college football coaches. Day’s raise makes him the latest coach to crack $9 million per year, putting him in company with Alabama’s Nick Saban and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and in line with recent megadeals given to Michigan State’s Mel Tucker and LSU’s Brian Kelly. In three seasons, Day has led the Buckeyes to a 34-4 record, including 23-1 in the Big Ten. NCAAFB – Saban calls out Texas A&M for using NIL deals to buy players Alabama coach Nick Saban called out Texas A&M, saying the school was “buying” players with name, image and likeness deals. The Aggies signed the top recruiting class in the country earlier this year. While speaking at an event in Birmingham, Alabama, Saban also mention Jackson State and Miami as schools that have used NIL deals to lure players. Jackson State coach Deion Sanders responded by calling Saban’s comments about a $1 million NIL deal for a highly touted recruit a lie. Saban said Alabama players earned more than $3 million from sponsorship and endorsement deals “the right way.” CFL – CFL, players’ union make tentative labor deal, ending strike The Canadian Football League and its players’ union have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract, ending the second strike in CFL history. The league made the announcement Wednesday night. The contract must be ratified by both the CFL board of governors and the CFL Players’ Association. The new collective bargaining agreement comes four days after players with seven of the league’s nine teams did not show up for the start of training camp. Players with the two remaining teams would have been eligible to walk off the job Thursday. Soccer – US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men The U.S. Soccer Federation has reached milestone agreements to pay its men’s and women’s teams equally. That makes the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes completely matching compensation. The federation has announced separate collective bargaining agreements through 2028 with the unions for both national teams. The move ends years of often acrimonious negotiations. One of the main sticking points was World Cup prize money. The unions agreed to pool FIFA’s payments for the men’s World Cup this year and next year’s Women’s World Cup. It will also pool the 2026 and 2027 tournaments. Rondo returned and beat on a window with a gun before giving the gun to former Louisville Metro Police interim chief Yvette Gentry and leaving. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Atlanta Dream at Indiana Fever, 7:00 p.m. NFL – Buck, Aikman excited about ‘starting over’ with ESPN Joe Buck and Troy Aikman have met their ESPN co-workers for the first time as they prepare to take over in the “Monday Night Football” booth. Both said Monday they are excited about the challenge of doing something new after 20 seasons together at Fox. Aikman had considered a deal with Amazon to call Thursday night games while reducing his schedule at Fox. But the logistics of that arrangement became difficult, and ESPN began talking to him about moving to Monday nights. Once Aikman was on board, ESPN snagged Buck from Fox, where he had a year left on his contract. Buck says the parting was amicable. NFL – AP source: Browns QB Watson to meet with NFL reps in Texas A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will meet with NFL officials in Texas. Watson is facing 22 civil lawsuits from massage therapists accusing him of sexual misconduct and plans to meet with the league representatives this week, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. Watson faces potential discipline from the league, which is independently investigating whether he violated its personal conduct policy. Reporter Josina Anderson was first to report the meeting on Twitter. A league spokesman declined to comment on the tweet and said "there’s no timetable as the review is active and ongoing.” NCAA – States hands off when it comes to NCAA, athlete compensation The NCAA recently issued a warning that there are still rules to follow now that college athletes can make money off their fame and celebrity. It waited nearly a year to do so and it has raised speculation of a crackdown on some of the dealmakers working with college athletes. About two dozen states have laws regarding athlete compensation. The laws, however, have no enforcement mechanisms. There has been no indication so far that a state attorney general or prosecutor will go after a booster organization striking deals with athletes. CFL – Roughriders cancel practices as CFL work stoppage continues The Saskatchewan Roughriders became the fourth Canadian Football League team to cancel training-camp practices after the league and its players broke off negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement. The Montreal Alouettes, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Toronto Argonauts canceled practices on Sunday, a day after negotiations halted, putting players on seven of the league’s nine teams in a legal strike position.
