The Padres have typically given fans reason to celebrate on Opening Day, but 2026 did not start on a positive note. Detroit took the air out of the building in the first inning, and Tarik Skubal kept the Friars in check for six frames. Darnay and Todd recap the 8-2 loss in an Opening Day edition of Sports Night in San Diego. Hear from Craig Stammen, Nick Pivetta and more after the loss. The guys share their thoughts on the lineup, an early test for Stammen's pitching staff, and big picture impressions of the club, and a touching tribute to Randy Jones. Plus, some new features we'll be seeing around Petco Park this season.
Paul Skubal's worst outing ever (5 ER in 0.2 IP), Griffin Jax blows a save, and Jackson Cheerio hits the IL on Opening Day. Joe Bond, AJ Applegarth, and Corey Pieper react live to MLB's Opening Day 2026 chaos, revealing which performances are real and which are noise you should ignore. The guys break down the biggest Opening Day surprises including O'Neal Cruz's defensive disaster costing Skubal runs, Jeremy Peña sitting despite hitting a homer yesterday, and whether Matt Wallner facing lefties signals everyday playing time. Plus: waiver wire must-adds (Jordan Romano, Ryan Staneck, Jake Bauers), lineup changes that matter (Sal Stewart locked at 1B, Jarren Durán DHing vs lefties), and bold season predictions. Opening Day overreactions: Paul Skubal disaster: 37 pitches, 2 outs, 5 ER (but O'Neal Cruz errors cost him) Jackson Cheerio to IL (2-4 weeks, fractured hand from WBC hit-by-pitch) Griffin Jax blows save, Garrett Cleavinger gets lit up in TB closer chaos Nick Pivetta shelled by Tigers (6 ER in 3 IP) - panic or patience? Waiver wire targets: Jordan Romano (slam dunk add with USA on IL) Ryan Staneck (Cardinals closer, got first save) Jake Bauers (filling in for Cheerio, went deep today) Joey Wiemer (5x5 deep league flyer - former 34 HR/30 SB guy in minors) Key lineup notes: Sal Stewart locked at 1B for Reds (Spencer Steer to LF vs lefties only) Jeremy Peña healthy but sat after homer - go trade for him NOW Matt Wallner faced lefty, drew 2 walks (35-HR upside if everyday) Jarren Durán DHing vs lefties (Joe's bust pick looking wrong already) Bold predictions: AL MVP: Bobby Witt Jr (Corey), Julio Rodriguez (Joe), José Ramírez (AJ) NL MVP: Shohei Ohtani (Joe - "literally no way to beat him"), Bryce Harper (AJ) AL Cy Young: Garrett Crochet (Corey/Joe), Paul Skubal (AJ - "he'll bounce back") NL Cy Young: Chris Sánchez (Corey - "every bit as good as Skubal"), Skubal again (AJ) AL Champ: Yankees (Joe), Blue Jays (AJ/Corey) World Series: Dodgers over Blue Jays (Corey - "Captain Chalk"), Phillies over Red Sox (AJ) Plus: Why the Rays lineup around Junior Cameaux is a disaster, Houston's infield puzzle when Peña returns, and Corey's "ride or die" trash league picks already paying off. Detroit Tigers top prospect Kevin McGonigle made the Opening Day roster — and the 21-year-old recorded four hits in his first game as the Tigers earned an 8-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Opening Day. He became the first Tigers player since 1987 (and the second in franchise history) to collect four hits in his MLB debut, which included a two-run double to the right-field corner (nicknamed McGonigle Corner) on the first pitch he saw from Padres right-hander Nick Pivetta in the first inning. On "Days of Roar," Evan Petzold and Chris Brown break it all down in a bonus episode, going inside the clubhouse to hear from McGonigle, manager A.J. Hinch, president of baseball operations Scott Harris and left-hander Tarik Skubal. After the McGonigle talk, Petzold and Brown evaluate the other final roster decisions, player storylines to watch throughout the season and whether it's World Series or bust for the Tigers, plus postseason and awards predictions for both the American League and National League. Munaf Manji and Dave Essler talk betting for Thursday. Manji and co-host Uncle Diamond Dave Esler arrive on Thursday, March 26th locked in and ready to work. Dave opens the episode acknowledging a backdoor cover loss on Auburn from Wednesday before confirming the OKC-Boston play cashed and kept the audience in the green, then pivots immediately to a live golf position on Marco Pence at 43-to-1 at the Texas Children's Open, tied for the lead through seven holes before the afternoon wind picks up. Before the first baseball pitch is handicapped, Munaf drops significant league news, as two NBA expansion franchises have been formally approved by the Board of Governors, one heading to Las Vegas and the other returning professional basketball to Seattle for the first time since the SuperSonics departed for Oklahoma City. The NBA breakdown centers on the most meaningful game of a thin three-game Thursday slate, the New York Knicks traveling to Charlotte to face the Hornets as 1.5-point home favorites with a 222.5 total. Dave makes the case for a first-half under, noting that Charlotte's recent win streak has been built almost entirely against bottom-of-the-standings teams and at home, while Munaf backs the Knicks plus the points after pointing out the Hornets hold a 19-24 record against above-.500 opponents this season. The real work of the episode is Opening Day itself, and the hosts cover three full games with methodical depth. Red Sox at Reds features Garrett Crochet at -163 against Andrew Abbott, and both hosts identify the first-five under and the Cincinnati run line as the sharper plays rather than following the public money on Boston, with Dave raising valid concerns about relying on Crochet's strikeout prop at 7.5 given Opening Day pitch count management. Tigers at Padres brings Tarik Skubal to Petco Park to face Nick Pivetta, and Munaf delivers a detailed case for the Padres plus odds, citing Pivetta's seven shutout innings against Detroit last April, his 0.99 WHIP and 8-1 home record in 2025, and a San Diego bullpen built to close games. The evening game at Dodger Stadium pits Zach Gallen against Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Dave and Munaf both gravitate toward unders, with an alternate first-five total of 5.5 as the cleaner entry, while Munaf notes that Yamamoto's career home ERA of 1.33 against Arizona and his tendency to finish Opening Day starts around 72 to 90 pitches complicates any strikeout prop that requires a deep outing. Dave closes with his best bet on the Orioles-Twins first-five under 4.5, crediting Trevor Rogers and Joe Ryan as two elite early-innings arms, and uses the moment to reflect openly on a 2025 baseball season where his top-rated plays were profitable but overall volume worked against him, committing to a tighter, sharper approach in 2026. Munaf's best bet is the Padres money line at +113. The episode closes with a mention of the Pregame.com season-long baseball package available at $15 off with promo code MVP15, and a preview of Friday's episode covering Sweet 16 results, more MLB action, and a look at the NBA standings. Join Kyle (@sonny_108) and Greg as they catch up on news and injuries around the league, share the imminent launch of the Prospects Live Merch Shop and discuss the starting pitcher position for dynasty including strategy and player analysis.Starting Pitchers Discussed: Tarik Skubal, Paul Skenes, Garrett Crochet, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Hunter Greene, Hunter Brown, Cristopher Sanchez, Logan Gilbert, Cole Ragans, Bryan Woo, Emmet Sheehan, Mike Burrows, Michael King, Kodai Senga, Dylan Cease, Nick Pivetta, Mick Abel, David Festa
Ben & Woods are joined by Nick Pivetta, Fernando Tatis Jr. & David Morgan.
Nick Pivetta joined Ben & Woods to discuss what motivates him during the offseason and if it's important to him to be the team's Opening Day starter.
Spring Training is less than a month away. The last week brought more rumors, but once again little to no action. Will a trade to clear salary open the floodgates? Would it make sense to deal Nick Pivetta? Sounds like the Brewers want to move Freddy Peralta - should the Padres get involved? Apparently they checked in on Nolan Arenado. We heard from Craig Stammen - who is still leaning on Mike Shildt, and thinks highly of Luis Arraez. Where we might see Sung-Mun Song play, and could his versatility open up trade options? A couple beloved figures are back in the organization. And a column in Forbes sparked that frustrating conversation about the future of the franchise.
Ben & Woods discussed whether or not the Padres should trade Nick Pivetta and the news that Brooks Koepka will make his PGA Tour re-debut at the Farmers Insurance Open.
