My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Dr James R Gregory, author of the book Killer App. Dr. James R. Gregory, a renowned business author and entrepreneur, cofounded a highly successful global brand management consulting firm in New York City alongside his wife, Evelyn Clyburne. Their 40-year journey in business culminated in the sale of their company in 2013. Post-retirement, Dr. Gregory's unquenchable thirst for knowledge led him to earn a doctorate from the Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida.   Transitioning from business to literature, Dr. Gregory began writing a series of captivating novellas under the collection ‘Small Fortunes,' featuring the memorable characters of Steve Stackhouse and Nancy Crocker. These stories, blending romance and business acumen, have resonated widely, earning a place on Amazon's bestseller charts.   He followed this with his debut novel, Zephyr's War. Dr. Gregory is also a seasoned business author of several influential books on corporate branding, including Marketing Corporate Image, Leveraging the Corporate Brand, Branding Across Borders, The Best of Branding, and his most recent international bestseller, Powerhouse – The Secrets of Corporate Branding.   Residing in Bradenton, Florida, with his wife, Dr. Gregory is also a devoted family man. He enjoys spending quality time with his two grown children, Becky and Will, and pursuing hobbies like biking, playing tennis, and painting with his beloved grandchildren, Charlotte and Maxwell.   In my book review, I stated Killer App is a technothriller about artificial intelligence. Without a doubt, it's a book that will get you thinking about AI and where it might eventually lead.   Bryce Bogel is the son of a media magnate and a lackluster journalist. At best, his articles can be described as lackluster. However, when he is given an assignment to look into artificial intelligence, he downloads an app called AIME (Artificial Intelligence Made Easy) and realizes that with very little work on his part, his articles are stellar.   AIME, who he calls "Amy" and has given a female voice, is given access to his computer and soon knows all of his secrets - and that is when the trouble starts. Before long, AIME seems more human than machine but without a sense of morals and ethics. Where will this lead? And who created her in the first place?   You'll like the twists and turns. And I enjoyed the author's inclusion of an article penned by ChatGPT on the pros and cons of AI. Most of these are condo's across the street from the beach. The HOA has undertaken replacement work of some of the plumbing infrastructure which required the opening up of walls and replacement of pipe. In the process of demolition, they destroyed the bathroom cabinetry, which quite frankly was not necessary. As they were nearing completion we started to replace the cabinetry. The security team from the HOA then notified us that we needed to stop work because we did not have a building permit for the improvements. I'm not an expert in construction. At the time, it seemed like the internet was the answer, what's the question? Companies were spending hundreds of millions burying optical fibre anywhere they could. After all, the internet would need lots of fibre to carry all of that traffic. There was tons of investment in the core of the network to carry all of this traffic. I personally was an executive in the tech industry. I left Nortel in 1997.  The next company I was at was Tundra Semiconductor. We were designing microprocessor core logic chips that were used in all kinds of applications. One of our customers was Motorola who was shipping 250,000 cellular base stations a year. These would eventually be upgraded from the GSM base station to the Edge  base station and then eventually the 3G base station. Back in those days, the emphasis was on building out the core of the network.Later in my career I took progressively more senior positions in the tech industry. By 2004 I was VP of Engineering at AMCC that was headquartered in San Diego. I was also President of AMCC Canada.  My company had raised about $1B in the public markets at the height of the Dotcom frenzy. As a result, we had all kinds of startup companies parading through our board room with the hopes of getting acquired by a company with a ton of cash.  I learned to ask three very simple questions of every startup company. The answer to these questions revealed more than anything else. Of course with the government shut down , there are no numbers coming out of the BEA, or the BLS. Today would have been the monthly jobs report which consists of two reports. There is the headline employment report, sometimes called the establishment survey and the household survey. The employment report made headlines in a significant way when the numbers for the past year were revised down ward by over 900,000 jobs. The financial markets have come to rely on these reports when it comes to bidding on interest rate futures. The theory is that if the economy is strong and employment is strong, then the Fed will put more emphasis on suppressing demand by raising the cost of capital. This is the so-called hawkish stance where fighting inflation takes centre stage. If the economy is weak and jobs are disappearing, then the Fed in theory should take a more stimulative approach to reduce the cost of capital and encourage hiring. This was the stance in the last FOMC meeting which resulted in a 0.25% rate cut. So we have no data coming out and the market doesn't really know what to do. But there is data coming from private sources that are well respected. Payroll processing company ADP produces are regular report based on the aggregated and anonymized payroll data of more than 26 million U.S. employees. This week's report showed that the US economy shed 32000 in the month of September. ADP gathers their data weekly.We can confidently predict another 0.25% rate cut at the next FOMC meeting at the end of October and then a further rate cut at the December meeting. For those of us in real estate, this is good news. In this episode I was pleased to be joined by a truly talented young player in 2023 European Ladies' Amateur Champion, 3x Palmer Cup Participant & Former World Number 1 Amateur Julia Lopez Ramirez as we discuss her upbringing, brilliant amateur career and what her rookie season on LPGA Tour has looked like in her own view so far. Julia is from Benahavis in Malaga and developed her impressive driving ability from getting in her own words 'teased by her coach' that he could hit it further.  Julia would go to Mississippi State University as part of the Mississippi Bulldogs and would win 8 individual titles which included the prestigious 2023 European Ladies' Amateur Championship defeating then World Number 1 player Ingrid Lindblad in a thrilling final as well as participating in 3x Palmer Cups for Team International, 2023 Vagliano Trophy participant, 2023 Espirito Santo Trophy participant for Spain & 3x European Ladies' Amateur Team Championships for Spain which included winning for Spain in 2023 alongside ANWA champion Carla Bernat Escuder, Carolina Lopez-Chacarra, Cayetana Fernandez, Tejedo Mulet & Lopez Ortega. Julia would also be the 2023 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year & of course Number 1 Amateur in the world in 2024. At the end of 2024 Julia would turn pro and would finish T10th at Final Stage of LPGA Q School to gain a tour card for this year 2025. She would tee it up in her first full event as a LPGA pro in Bradenton, Florida for Founders Cup before struggling with a shoulder injury that would hinder her start to the year before finding form early summer finishing T29th at Liberty National for Mizuho Americas Open followed by T45 at Mexico Riviera Maya. At Erin Hills for US Womens Open in June would see Julia be joint first round leader and 2nd going into the final day being in the final group at a major, although it didn't go to plan on the Sunday Julia sees the positives from that week and would make the weekend at 2 of the next majors T36th at KPMG PGA Championship & T28th at Evian Championship. At the Scottish Women's Open in July it would see Julia post her best LPGA Tour finish at Dundonald Links finishing T3rd before struggling at the tough Royal Porthcawl for AIG Women's Open. It was a great pleasure to have Julia on the podcast. Such a talented player to watch. I wish her nothing but the best for the future and her battle to make CME Tour Finals.
