275: Kibwé Johnson on “The Tao of the Hammer”: Awareness, Reflexiveness, and Individuality in Sport Technique

Today's show is with Kibwé Johnson.  Kibwé is the director of track and field at SPIRE Academy, in Geneva, Ohio, and the founder of FORTIUS performance.  Prior to SPIRE, Kibwe coached throws at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida for 4 years. In his time as an athlete, Kibwé established himself as one of the USA's best hammer throwers by being ranked first or second for over a decade, and his personal best of 80.31m/263'5” in 2011 the best mark by an American hammer thrower in over ten years.  He also owns the world's all-time best HT/DT/WT combination of distances. Kibwé has personally worked with some of the most well regarded coaches in the US and internationally.  His coach for his final 10 years, Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuk, greatly influenced the development of Kibwé's own methodologies.  Kibwé's coaching philosophy is built on communication and cites his experiences as a husband and father with learning how to become more effective as a coach. In my time as a coach, I've learned that technique and skill are more than a set of instructions, or a final “model” to shoot for through a series of drills and cues.  Although these instructions can certainly be helpful for lower level performers, once an athlete gets to a more advanced level of performance, drills lose their luster, and we must become more attuned to the actual interaction between the athlete and their environment (implements, the ground, gravity, etc.). On the show today, Kibwé talks about his experiences as an athlete, particularly with Dr. Bondarchuk that helped him develop as a thrower, and in his eventual career as a coach.  He talks about the unique, high velocity and cyclical elements of the hammer that demand a particular relationship to the instrument, and things we can take from this relationship that can transfer to other skills, or life itself.  Finally, Kibwe speaks extensively about drills, vs. holistic skill performance, and the many “subtle” elements, such as awareness, that go into enhancing holistic performance on the highest levels. Timestamps and Main Points 6:40 – Kibwé's evolution as an athlete, and what led him to his philosophy of “The Tao of the Hammer” 10:25 – Kibwé's experience in working with Dr. Bondarchuk and how the communication barrier actually helped Kibwé to figure out his throw without the use of words or cues 18:20 – How the hammer throw in track and field is unique in respect to other throwing events due to its unique, very high velocity rotational dynamics 21:10 – Kibwé's take on teaching athlete's fundamental positions vs. letting them figure out skills in a different manner (or on their own), particularly in context of the hammer throw 26:40 – How acquiring the “feeling” of a good throw is helpful to scale to throws of all distances 32:25 – How people tend to want a “list of things” when doing something, and the battle of getting an athlete outside of a list of cues, and to facilitate them figuring things out on their own 34:40 – How to learn, from a “Tao of the Hammer” perspective, and what awareness in a hammer throw means to Kibwé 46:40 – Examples of elite athletes who have had their mechanics “fixed”, as per a “technical model” and had poor seasons or failed to improve 51:25 – How Kibwé would address a “mistake” in an athlete's throwing, and portions of an athlete's technique 56:40 – Where drills fall short in training a complex movement, such as the hammer throw 1:02:40 – Reactivity as needed between the hammer and the athlete, and how to “do less” in the course of a throw from a perspective of actively putting force into the implement “It really came down to trying to find the words to explain how I was feeling when I felt my best; because I w...

Wooing Dr. Diasti Dear Dr. Diasti, Thank you for coming to our rescue! At first this may all appear quite daunting, but we have some amazing systems in place to monitor our cats' health and our vet has access to all of this from her iPhone and from any computer. I have added you as one with Vet access, so please to not accidentally delete information. Changes you make on the charts appear for all of us on our versions. That is both the beauty of the site, and why we have to be very careful. This is where most of our cats' health records are kept and only 7 of our staff & volunteers and staff have access to this section: The Census is all of our cats, their ages and species. 74 of our 120 cats are over the age of 15 so we are dealing with lots of old age problems. These cats usually only live 10-12 years in zoos. Daily Med Charts are the dozen or so cats who are on meds daily. See the tabs at the bottom of the chart to click to different cats. Our Keepers log their initials to let the vet and our Operations Manager, Gale Ingham, know that the meds were taken. Documents has our USDA Program of Veterinary Care agreement that we have to keep on site for USDA inspections. How To Give Meds are training guides and a 25 minute video on how to use the sedation equipment and load the darts and jab stick. Med Inventory is the running inventory of our medications on site and is kept up to date by one of our Sr. Keepers. She also makes up the baggies for each cat's meds for each day. These are made up a week in advance and kept under lock and key. This is the anesthetic protocol and I think lions and tigers are somewhat different from each other in what works. The bold Record Archive is each of our cats and their medical history. The Record Archive 2 is for cats who have passed on, but kept as a reference. This link is our main Volunteer website where our 100+ volunteers make daily observations about the cats: These pages can only hold 500 entries each, so soon it will be a page ending in -2 Volunteers log the observations, the Operations Manager, Gale, checks them off after she checks on the cat and our vet checks them off after she looks at the cat on her weekly rounds. If this is too much bother for you, we can print the list on paper, and then after you have seen the cats, I will go in and check them off so that our volunteers know the cat has been seen by both the manager and the vet. In the left sidebar is a page called Food & Feces. Jamie Veronica and I do, because the first indication that a cat is sick is often when they leave food, or have some weird feces. The Food Chart link is for those cats who are always poor doers, so we know what goes in them and what comes out. The link at left called Med Charts takes you off this site and to the Secure Vet Log site at (mentioned above) The search feature on both sites is very good, so if you are looking for cats who had hypertension, you can type that key word and find the cat's charts. A lot of our files were handwritten and are on site, but they do not scan with OCR well enough to be included in our searchable charts. I am planning to scan and post them for reference individually though. I emailed Dr. Wynn and said I had found a vet who was willing to help out as a backup vet for when she is out of town, or unavailable, and asked if she would mind showing this person around and sharing her experiences. Since yesterday was her day here to do rounds, I don't think she will be available again before Sunday. We had another volunteer vet here, Dr. Kelly Rice, but she lives in Bradenton so she is having a hard time keeping up her hours as a volunteer. Dr. Wynn was always willing to let Dr. Rice help out on things, but Dr. Rice was only able to come once or twice a month and has said she is just too busy this time of year to come at all. Both women originally just came here to volunteer cleaning cages, but when I found out they were vets I asked them to help with veterinary stuff. Dr. Wynn apprenticed under Dr. Stacie Wadsworth for about 3 years, I think, before Dr. Stacie retired and moved out of state. Dr. Rice has only helped Dr. Wynn with a very few procedures and usually prefers to clean cages when here. (Dr. Wynn in green & Dr. Rice in yellow) The dark haired woman assisting in these, in the navy shirt, is my daughter and our President, Jamie Veronica. She trained with Dr. Stacie in her clinic so that she could assist here way back 15 years or so ago. Jamie is on site 5-6 days a week and assists in all of the vet care as someone who can lure the cats into lockout, net them if they won't and is the kind of person who will hold onto an angry cat well enough that you will never have to worry about being scratched or bitten. She also does all of our rehab work with bobcats. Naturally, I have been doing this for nearly 18 years as well and am almost always available to assist.   I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! Visit BigCatRescue.org/Amazon-smile   You can see photos, videos and more, updated daily at BigCatRescue.org   Check out our main channel at YouTube.com/BigCatRescue   Music (if any) from Epidemic Sound (http://www.epidemicsound.com) This video is for entertainment purposes only and is my opinion.

In segment two Tom discusses getting signed and heading off to the minors for the Braves. It was culture shock for him. First time being away from home and it wasn't college but professional baseball and it was his job. Mark Lemke was his roommate in Bradenton, Florida and it was an eye opener for him being a professional athlete. Lot's of adjustments and huge learning curve. He had to learn new pitching mechanics and how to throw certain pitches. The work load was different in learning all these new things. One big thing was the "grind" as it were being a baseball player in the minors. Had to learn to keep busy between starts as he was not an everyday player. Had to learn focus on his job. As we continue with Tom talking minor leagues he highlights his call up to the Braves on August 17, 1987. He was in Toledo and had lost a game and his manager called him to tell him he was called up by the Braves and headed to Houston to meet up with the team. Great story of how he was getting ready for his first start in the majors. All the emotions he was feeling at the time. As he was with the Braves he had a turning point with manager Russ Nixon. Tom had been struggling a bit and he was called into the office in Wrigley Field by Russ. He told him they believed in him and he was there because there was no one in the minors who take his place, so figure out what you have to do to be successful here in the "Majors". One thing Tom highlights is in the majors you are going to have about 35 starts. 1/3 of time your are going to be on, 1/3 your going to be terrible. 1/3 your in the middle, that is where you have to figure things out and how to win those games.  Tom also, highlights how he and Greg Maddox, Steve Avery, and John Smoltz would talk pitching all the time. How to set guys up. Certain pitches to throw. What is working and not working. One guy early in his career who was great for him was Ted Simmons. He was Tom's catcher and used to talk him about all different things in between innings. It is a great listen into what is going on during a season and games.

When was the last time you turned on the television and heard more stories about Black male success than you heard about the low expectations, racial bias, and economic stigma that affect Black boys and men in our country?  With the prevalence of misinformation, racial inequity, and economic bias permeating our society, how will we ensure our boys are not lost to cultural stigma before they have a chance at success? Today on the podcast, I’m speaking with Neil Phillips, co-founder and former CEO of Visible Men Academy. VMA provides boys from low-income families with outstanding academic, character, and social education in a nurturing school environment. Neil’s work confronts systemic bias and inequity with a deep belief in goodness, love, and the promise of youth as agents of change for our educational systems and our world.  Listen in! About Neil Phillips: Neil Phillips believes that love is the answer to just about everything. If that makes you uncomfortable, that's okay. Discomfort signals an opportunity for growth. Neil has spent his entire career managing his own discomfort and diving deeply into the realm of breaking the bonds of systemic racism and having the uncomfortable yet productive conversations that can radically change organizations and individual lives. Neil also knows what it takes to truly transform and elevate the lives of young people and has discovered that it is love.  On a practical level, it looks a lot like leadership, encouragement, boundaries, expectations, and accountability. But ask any one of the children he has had the privilege of knowing over his decades of work as an educator, coach, and youth advocate, and they will tell you that Neil Phillips loves them and was never afraid to say it or show it. Love has made all the difference. Neil is a Harvard University graduate, and his life is dedicated to the elevation of Black male achievement, fulfillment, and societal contribution. Through an emphasis on what is working for Black boys and men in America, Neil shines a spotlight on what success looks like and shifts the narrative away from the misleading and harmful stereotypes that have plagued and repressed Black male achievement for far too long. He educates audiences around what is working for Black boys and men in America rather than what is failing.  Neil is the co-founder, founding principal, and former CEO of Visible Men Academy, an "A" rated public charter school for K-5th grade located in Bradenton, Florida. It provides boys from low-income families with outstanding academic, character, and social education in a nurturing school environment. Neil is the founder and director of Visible Men Network, a dynamic digital platform that collects and shares stories from accomplished Black men, shapes these stories into success curriculum, and delivers this curriculum to boys across America through schools and community agencies. Neil is an Aspen Institute Education Entrepreneurship Fellow, a member of the inaugural Echoing Green/Open Society Foundation Black Male Achievement Fellowship. He is a multiple-time winner of The Nantucket Project Audience Award for his provocative talk on race in America called “Race to Truth,” for his compelling on-stage conversation with famed television producer Norman Lear and, most recently, for his on-stage conversation with former President George W. Bush. Currently, Neil is the subject of a documentary film project titled Visible Man, highlighting his efforts to elevate Black boys and men in America.  Learn more at Visible Men Network, or follow Neil on Facebook or Instagram. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

Originally from Virginia, Zach Hoops has gone all-in with long-distance and ultralight backpacking. After discovering his love for hiking and honing his craft on sections of the AT, he went on to complete the Pacific Crest Trail Southbound in just over one hundred days. In addition to this major accomplishment, he has traversed several other lesser-known trails spanning from Arkansas to the Sierra High Route. He has compiled all of his own research into some very useful trail guides that can be found on his website. Zach also shares what he has learned from embracing the ultralight style and focusing on big mile days.
