The Cincinnati Reds Splash into the International Signing Pool, Featuring Lindsay Crosby from Locked On MLB Prospects

The Cincinnati Reds signed 10 total International Prospects, including the No. 3 ranked prospect in Ricardo Cabrera, over the weekend. Jeff is joined by Lindsay Crosby (Locked On MLB Prospects) to break down the players who were signed and the impact they have on the Reds future. They also talk about the unique strategy the Reds have, when it comes to the International Signing Period, and why it has worked for them. Ricardo Cabrera has the "potential Five Tool player" tag on him and shows a ton of promise for the Cincinnati Reds. Anthuan Valencia has a good glove and may be undervalued. Esmith Pineda has a lot of power and could be a future Reds corner outfielder. The top three guys in this international signing class are really intriguing, says Lindsay Crosby. Ben Walmsley, an Australian, leads a group of three pitchers who are in the other seven International Prospects signed by the Cincinnati Reds. They also added Lisnerkin Lantigua and Nelfri Payano, both right-handed pitchers, to their group of signings. The Cincinnati Reds put together an intriguing International Signing Class. The Cincinnati Reds strategy, when it comes to the International Signing Period, differs from other teams and they have used that to their advantage. They don't focus solely on one area, and also look outside of the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, two countries saturated with MLB scouts from other teams. Instead they look to Panama, Australia, and more for diamonds in the International Signing Period rough. *SUBSCRIBE* on YouTube and *FOLLOW* the podcast on your favorite app and on Twitter and Instagram @lockedonreds Also follow @jefffcarr on Twitter and @carrjefff on Instagram Call or text (513) 549-0159 Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Fixing the Cincinnati Reds in Four Moves

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2022 35:52

The Cincinnati Reds can be a winning ball club in 2022, if they do four things. Jeff tells you what the four things are while Steve pokes holes in his plan on today's podcast. They also talk about the Bengals playoff victory (Jeff was there) and the Reds international signings over the past few days. There are four things, two players leaving and two being acquired, that can set the Reds up for success in 2022. The Reds should trade away Mike Moustakas and his large contract. The Reds should trade away Sonny Gray for a prospect ready to play in the Major Leagues this year, or next. The Reds should sign a closer. To finish out this simple plan, the Reds should sign a starting-caliber outfielder. The problems are, it won't be easy to trade Mike Moustakas, if impossible, for the Reds. It's too early for the Reds to trade Sonny Gray. The Reds front office will not pay for a closer, instead they will rely on waiver claim pitchers and retreads to get them through the year. The Reds will not fork over the necessary money to sign a starting-caliber outfielder. The city of Cincinnati finally got its first taste of playoff success in more than two decades as the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Las Vegas Raiders, and Jeff was there to see it. He briefly talks about that day in the final segment. He and Steve also look at a few of the Reds signings from the International Prospect Pool and what it all means for the franchise. Jeff looks at where the holes are and what they have currently in the organization that could help the Reds, should a rash of injuries plague them during the year. He also talks about minor league signings with invites to Spring Training and why one major league signing could tilt things in the Reds favor. On a roster that will be relying on players who have dealt with injuries, like Nick Senzel, Sonny Gray, Tyler Naquin, and Mike Moustakas, depth is an important thing to have. The Cincinnati Reds don't, though. Sure there are guys like Max Schrock, TJ Friedl, Dauri Moreta, and Reiver Sanmartin that have piqued fans' interest, but they're not necessarily reliable options at this early juncture in their careers. Moves are necessary, and the ones the Reds have made now come into greater focus. Burning Questions of the Cincinnati Reds: Can Luis Castillo Dominate Consistently?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 14, 2021 28:43

Luis Castillo was magnificent for two-thirds of his season, but it was that first third that completely erased his name from the Cy Young candidate's list. Can the ace of the Cincinnati Reds put together a fully dominant 2022? Jeff talks about that, to begin a series of boring questions about the Cincinnati Reds, as well as some too-early projections for 2022 and what the best performance of 2021 was for La Piedra. Luis Castillo needs to start hot, stay hot, and end hot if he is going to convince folks outside of Cincinnati Reds fandom that he is a top pitcher in this league. Mechanics were described as part of the problem, bad luck another, but Castillo was just bad for the first two months of the season. He's got to expand that two-thirds of good pitching into an entire year if he is going to be taken seriously as a Cy Young candidate. Fangraohs sees marginal improvement for Luis Castillo, based on their computer model of projections. Although it may be a bit early to look into them, we dive into projecting La Piedra in 2022 and talk about what could be a career year for him. Then take a look back at last year and what was his best performance as Luis Castillo finally looked like the ace we all knew he could be. He did in in June against the Brewers, and didn't even get credit for the win, thanks to some lackluster attempts at hitting. La Piedra showed his dominance, though, as he kept Milwaukee off the scoreboard. Luis Castillo, Tyler Mahle, and Sonny Gray have all been rumored to be in discussion by Nick Krall, and they are featured prominently in this first round of mock trades, but there's one name that is included that hasn't been rumored: Jesse Winker. We look at the trades, the returns, and the plausibility and then give each mock trade a mock grade. And one final thought to close out the pod has to do with what damage MLB is doing to its own reputation, regardless of a delayed season. The Players Union and the League are Far Apart on Many Issues, Revier Sanmartin's Value to the Cincinnati Reds, and an Offseason Transaction Deadline

Bruce Meyer and Tony Clark have made it clear the position of the Players Union after Rob Manfred announced the owners' decision to institute a lockout. Reiver Sanmartin has been pitching well in the Dominican Winter League and may be a dark horse candidate for a starting rotation spot. Adding a transaction deadline (or a multi-faceted one) could add intrigue to the MLB offseason. After Rob Manfred said multiple times that the players' proposal was too extreme, Bruce Meyer retorted that the owners may have been even more radical. In fact, the League has put a line in the sand on multiple issues, already, stifling any negotiations. The two sides seem quite far apart on a potential CBA. There could be two spots in the Cincinnati Reds starting rotation up for grabs this Spring and one candidate is already setting himself apart in the Dominican Winter Leagues. Reiver Sanmartin has allowed just five earned runs over 26 innings, this winter, and looks to bring his arsenal of deception to the Reds starting rotation. The offseason in Major League Baseball is unlike any other professional sport...because it is so slow. Perhaps adding deadlines could liven up the news cycle, cause a sense of urgency for teams to get things done, and ultimately drum up interest in the sport at a time when it seems to be dwindling. Trading Mike Moustakas is the Best Idea the Cincinnati Reds Could Have this Offseason

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2021 27:43

Mike Moustakas is the second-highest paid players on the Cincinnati Reds roster and offloading his contract may single-handedly accomplish the mission to realign payroll. Why trading hims means only good things for the Reds and how they could accomplish it. Also, a thought on the Hall of Fame announcements that have been made and why the Hall of Fame is another thing that MLB has gotten wrong. Mike Moustakas had a rough year in 2021 and trading him right now would be at the lowest point in his value. However, trading him would also make trading one of Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray, or Tyler Mahle superfluous and that would be an amazing development in the Cincinnati Reds offseason plans. The trade may sound difficult, due to his value, but the Milwaukee Brewers pulled off a similar trade with Jackie Bradley Jr and actually received return value for him. Not to mention the fact that the Toronto Blue Jays were also in on the negotiations before the Boston Red Sox finalized the deal with the Brew Crew. The Reds could contact the Colorado Rockies about their desire to upgrade third base, the Washington Nationals about backing up Carter Kieboom, or the Arizona Diamondbacks about shoring up their lineup. If the Reds can sell another team on the bounce back of Moose, then they will reap the benefits of not having to trade a marquee talent from their rotation. Also, why it is important the MLB celebrates its great players while their still living. Rob Manfred Offers Little Hope in His MLB Lockout Press Conference

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 3, 2021 27:43

Rob Manfred addressed the media regarding the MLB Lockout, it's reasoning, and why the owners decided to implement it. What he had to say not only betrayed the rift between the Players' Union and the Owners, but also showed how frustrating the process was for both sides. Some good ideas were mentioned, but the symptoms are, again, getting too much attention while the root cause goes untreated. The owners staunchly defend revenue sharing and see it as a mechanism for competitive balance, despite its obvious impact to the contrary. Players are trying to weaken the revenue sharing in an effort to increase competitive urgency, but this is a non-starter in a vast field of many ideas the owners see as non-starters. How the two sides can come together still remains to be seen and a possible solution seems far off. So with all that negativity in abundance, lets shift back to some Cincinnati Reds-centered talk as we look at why the most improved Reds player in 2022 will be Nick Senzel. Cincinnati Reds Trade Rumors and a Non-Eventful Non-Tender Deadline

The non-tender deadline came and went and the only player the Cincinnati Reds non-tendered, Brandon Bailey, they turned around and signed to a minor league deal. There are also rumors that persist that Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray, or Tyler Mahle may be headed somewhere else and why Michael Lorenzen wasn't returning to Cincinnati. Also, with the MLB lockout forthcoming, we get you set to understand why this is about to happen. The Cincinnati Reds non-tendered Brandon Bailey and no one else on Tuesday before the deadline. They then turned around and signed Bailey to a minor-league deal with invite to Spring Training. The reason the Reds stayed put is because they're keeping the status quo. Nothing too drastic happened at the non-tender deadline because nothing too drastic is going to happen for the entirety of this offseason. Speaking of drastic, there are rumors the Texas Rangers have inquired about Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray, and Tyler Mahle for a possible trade. Don't fret, it's only an inquiry, which always seems to befuddle some fans. Chances are still good the Cincinnati Reds hold on to their top pitchers as they lost one f their top bullpen arms from a year ago. Michael Lorenzen looks to leap from the bullpen to the starting rotation, for the Los Angeles Angels. He wasn't returning to the Reds to simply pitch out of the bullpen, though, so the loss is not much of a surprise. And finally, MLB owners and players remain far apart in their negotiations to renew the collective bargaining agreement that is set to expire at 11:59 PM eastern on December 1st. With that brings the high likelihood of a lockout. The players will fight hard in this negotiation due to their most recent acquiescence to multiple big ticket items for the owners. They've hired Bruce Meyer to do just that. This lockout could last to February, though I doubt either side wants to push back the season. Today is the Non-tender Deadline for MLB as the lockout looms on December 2nd and the Cincinnati Reds have a few players that some people see as candidates to be non-tendered. We talk about Amir Garrett, Tyler Naquin, Jeff Hoffman, and Aristides Aquino and why the Reds may actually keep them instead of moving on from them. We also look at Tyler Naquin, why he seems like a roster lock, and why Andrew McCutcheon could be an interesting platoon candidate with him. As Michael Lorenzen signed with the Los Angeles Angels, and many other free agency happenings went on, the Cincinnati Reds continued their status quo of little to no movement. This seems to allude to how they will approach today's non-tender deadline. with some players due to make raises, and some of those players making seemingly easy non-tender targets, we look at why none of them may be moved on from a the Reds have established a position of immutability. Let's pretend for a moment that the Reds do make a move and look at what Andrew McCutcheon could bring to the table as a Red. He would greatly improve Cincinnati's lineup against left-handed pitchers. Imagining also brings to light the reality of status quo, though, so lets also try to squint and see the positive side of Aristides Aquino being given the platoon job with Naquin and how he can improve. Who on the Cincinnati Reds Could Bring Some Underrated Trade Value and a Thought About Clint Frazier

The Cincinnati Reds are telling us they won't spend money in free agency and are "realigning payroll" instead of prioritizing winning. So here is a way they can maximize the value of the players they have for competitiveness in a year or two: the Alfredo Simon Rule. Jeff explains what that is, why it's important, and who the Reds could use as trade cups. He also tells you why the Reds should look into Clint Frazier. Seven years ago the Reds traded an overachieving pitcher in Alfredo Simon for the Detroit Tigers No.5 prospect, Eugenio Suarez. If the Reds want to be any kind of interesting, they will get to work on some more trades like that this offseason, and they have two players who fit the bill. Kyle Farmer and Tyler Naquin provided some nice moments for the Reds in 2021 and performed well above their career norms. These two guys could be possible trade chips for the Reds to take advantage of in negotiations. Clint Frazier is no longer a Yankee and has every fanbase aflutter with the idea of adding him to their team. The Reds should absolutely be in on this guy, despite his injury-prone past. He could fit right in to their cheap philosophy while still having a relatively high ceiling, should things work out for him. The Cincinnati Reds are "realigning payroll" this offseason, but they've also said they're not tanking. So what is it? Jeff tries to expound on what the Reds aren't saying and gives an idea as to how the Reds can improve the team. Nick Krall got all of Reds Country in a tizzy when he said the focus would be "realigning payroll" this offseason. But ever since then he has balked at questions about rebuilding. So if it isn't teardown, but it isn't the Reds going all in on the playoffs, what is it? How can the Reds still garner your interest while actively staying in the mediocre middle? The Cincinnati Reds are relying on a bet that ownership has made for 15 years that has only worked twice (kind of). They need to understand that Jonathan India, Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, and company are nice young players that need talent around them to succeed, an idea they did not employ with Joey Votto and Jay Bruce. How can they go about acquiring talent while self-imposing restrictions of payroll? The Alfredo Simon rule. The Alfredo Simon rule looks at a player who had a good year and ascertains whether it will ever happen again. IF the answer is no, see if you can trade him for an Eugenio Suarez-like player. When Jonathan India was announced the starter at second base on Opening Day, it was a surprise. When he was announced the NL Rookie of the Year it was no surprise. The rookie star for the Cincinnati Reds took the league by storm and is the most important player for the Reds to build around, as the seasons move on and Joey Votto comes to the end of his tenure in Cincinnati. The messaging from Nick Krall about this current offseason, though, is of cost-cutting and taking a step back, which seems to lend a thought to a rebuild. How likely are the Reds to trade Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray and could they actually turn it into a positive by bringing up Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo? When we get to the next season, guys like Max Schrock, TJ Friedl, Reiver Sanmartin, Dauri Moreta, even Aristides Aquino, will be on the fringes. Which of these guys will the Reds be trusting, if any? Tonight the NL Rookie of the Year Award winner (among others) will be announced. It seems intuitive that Jonathan India will take home the hardware, but it's not guaranteed. Dylan Carlosn and Trevor Rogers have an argument. And who is the best Cincinnati Red for the foreseeable future? Considering all avenues of hitting, fielding, running, health, marketability, and so on, is it Jonathan India? Is it Jesse Winker? Is it Luis Castillo? Or who is it? Jeff gives you his take. *FOLLOW* the podcast on your favorite app and on Twitter and Instagram @lockedonreds Also follow @jefffcarr on Twitter and @carrjefff on Instagram Call or text (513) 549-0159 Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Why This is Now a Rebuild for the Cincinnati Reds and who could be the Most Important Trade Pieces

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2021 29:14

Nick Krall tipped his hand at the beginning of this offseason by saying the Cincinnati Reds would "realign the payroll with their budget." The Reds are going to begin a new rebuild, this offseason. IT doesn't have to be to the level of decimation and negative timeline of 2015, though, as the Reds have players who could bring in a favorable return. Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray are important pitchers on this team, and can be aces for many other pitching staffs. Jesse Winker is a young, talented hitter with the ability play the corner outfield positions adequately. All three have what other teams covet almost as much as talent: multiple years of team control. So, with savvy trades by Krall and the front office, this doesn't have to be a lengthy time of non-playoff competition. They also have guys in-house who they can build around. Jonathan India is the odds on favorite to win the NL Rookie of the Year award, Tyler Mahle was arguably the team's best pitcher in 2022, and if they don't trade him, Winker can help anchor the lineup. Saying the word rebuild does not have to mean years of 90+ losses for the Reds, if they do it right. *FOLLOW* the podcast on your favorite app and on Twitter and Instagram @lockedonreds Also follow @jefffcarr on Twitter and @carrjefff on Instagram Call or text (513) 549-0159 Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Is this the Lowest Cincinnati Reds Fans Have Ever Felt About the Franchise?

There was a point when the Big Red Machine was taken apart. Players were traded away, or let go through free agency, and it all had to end. That doesn't compare to the frustration that is being wrought at Great American Ballpark, currently. The Tony Perez trade signaled the end of an era, but at least there were recent successes for Reds fans to hang their hats on. As it currently stands, the Reds have been next-to irrelevant for the better part of 30 years...and it seems like we're being told to wait a little longer. There's also another news outlet crowning Jonathan India the NL Rookie of the Year, now all that's left is the big one. Jeff Ruby is doing his best to bring Nick Castellanos back to Cincinnati, but will it be enough? And Nick Lodolo had an interesting year in the minors but looks poised to compete for a spot in the Reds starting rotation. What is it that is keeping him from being a lock? *FOLLOW* the podcast on your favorite app and on Twitter and Instagram @lockedonreds Also follow @jefffcarr on Twitter and @carrjefff on Instagram Call or text (513) 549-0159 Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
