Episode 51 travels back to the late-1980s to look closely at Beetlejuice (Tim Burton, 1988), a film that uses stop-motion, practical effects, prosthetics, make-up and bluescreen to complete its fantasy story of netherworlds, outsiderdom and life after death. Joining Chris and Alex is special guest Jingan Young, playwright, screenwriter, journalist and academic who is the editor of ‘Foreign Goods’ (the first collection of British Chinese plays published in the UK) and a regular contributor to The Guardian and Hong Kong Free Press, who has also recently completed a PhD in Film Studies at King’s College London. Listen as they discuss the tonally abrasive qualities of Tim Burton’s film and its shifts into haunted house horror; narratives of conquest, and how this connects to Beetlejuice’s take on white privilege and U.S. national identity; Michael Keaton’s performance and the figure of the trickster; the racialised use of music and questions of neo-minstrelsy; and how the film’s satirical-political edge gives the animated fantasy a bit of extra bite.

Gauss is a Milwaukee musical collective formed in 2012 with origins in the Riverwest basement scene. Punk music inspires their ethos and intensity and a desire to escape punk music propels their continual evolution in sound and songwriting. Now featuring trumpet, violin, and keys, Gauss appears to be a post-rock chamber group. However, they’re equally capable of hair-rising feedback, subtle pop covers, backing up rappers, and making enchanting new sounds every year. Gauss is getting ready to release brand new material and will be playing two upcoming shows in April: the first on Friday, April 21st at the High Dive (which is a benefit for the MacCannon Brown Homeless Sanctuary) and Saturday, April 29th (for Arte Para Todos 2017 with Foreign Goods).

Imagine this: One day you’re voice is completely gone! All of the studying, practicing, learning - how does this make sense in a life dedicated to music? Was it all for nothing? That’s what singer B~Free faced in the fall of 2013 when pneumonia and a throat infection left her unable to speak - let alone sing - for three months. Vocal cord surgery followed, leaving the musician fearing she would never sing again. After a traumatic year when she couldn’t sing a single note, she became more determined than ever to share her musical gifts. The year-long struggle transformed B~Free as both an artist and an individual. Now she’s back with the anticipated release of her sophomore album “Ode 2 A Luv Affair,” largely featuring production and performance by the artist herself. “No More,” the leading single and video from the project, portrays B~Free as a vibrant young woman escaping the bonds of an abusive relationship. The dark nature of domestic abuse is transmuted into a declaration of freedom and hope through B-Free’s heartfelt lyrics and powerful vocals. With the nostalgic presence of R&B/Soul, the richness of her training and purity of her voice, B-Free’s multiple talents as a Singer-Songwriter-Producer-Musician are bound to make a mark on the music industry. Armed with a B.A. in Music Performance and a Masters degree in Music Education, her main purpose is to share her gift with the world. She's performed in a number of venues throughout the country, including Summerfest, the Kennedy Center, The Double Door, and The Shrine. B~Free has also shared stages with artists such as Slum Village, Dwele, BJ The Chicago Kid, and Talib Kweli. In her hometown of Milwaukee, B~Free is lead vocalist of the popular group Foreign Goods and collaborates often with lyricist-producer Klassik, bringing her commitment to music into her own community.

WMSE 91.7FM is excited to welcome B-Free to our monthly Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s series on Tuesday, November 1st. Join us by listening over the airwaves or by participating as an audience member – this event is FREE and open to the 21+ public and lots of fun! B~Free will be joined by Milwaukee’s Foreign Goods as her backing band. The members of the multi-genre collective cite this as one of their last public performances of the year. When first introduced to the soulful & artistic sound of singer-songwriter-producer-musician B~Free, it is but a mere taste of all the capabilities this young lady embodies. Following a lengthy hiatus, B~Free reemerges with her sophomore project, the “Ode 2 A Luv Affair” LP. With sound inspirations from Musiq Soulchild, Dwele, J-Dilla and Jill Scott., it is a conceptual album that traverses the ups and downs of romantic relationships. vulnerability, passion and compromise. Production for the album began in 2013 but was interrupted by a lengthy vocal trauma that would leave the artist unable to speak or sing for months. Following a vocal cord surgery & traumatic year of recovery, B~Free became more dedicated than ever to share her musical gifts. Hailed by The Shepherd Express as an “immaculately constructed R&B record,” with a style rooted in 90s R&B/neo Soul and traces of present day influences, “Ode” not only represents the many trials and turmoils of love, but the personification of an artist’s loss and reclaiming of her gift. As always, WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach (and YOU), will lead B~Free and Foreign Goods through questions in between the live performance. Doors are at 5:30pm, segment starts at 6pm and runs until 7pm. Club Garibaldi’s is located at 2501 S. Superior Street in Bay View.

Join us by listening over the airwaves or by participating as an audience member – this event is FREE and open to the 21+ public and lots of fun! In 2010 Abby Jeanne hit the roads of america in her mini-van to begin her musical journey. She personally describes her music as “Rock n’ roll with a dreamers soul” and uses her music to guide listeners into transcending reality, her soulful voice full of raw emotion and on-point dynamics. While she has contributed vocals for Queen Tut and Milwaukee’s Foreign Goods, her solo work is where she truly shines, a young woman with an old soul evoking those big, soulful, downtempo R&B sounds of the sixties and 80s. According to Milwaukee Record, “Abby’s solo material is not to be ignored.
