I've had many people tell me that the sequel is a completely different game from the first, but that didn't stop me from wanting to give it a shot. Unfortunately, the new gameplay didn't really connect with me. I loved the first game's roguelike mechanic, but this one went more in the direction of side scroller, and while it's gorgeous to look at and the dialogue is charming as hell, it's just not that fun to play.My buddy David Rae makes his return to the show this week, and while he grew up playing this one, he's not sure if he liked it because it was a good game, or because it was the game he rented for the weekend as a kid. And yep, I get it now. MLF is awesome.The football itself is fine. Personally I prefer Tecmo Bowl for my retro football fix, but this is adequate. Where Mutant League Football shines is, well, the mutants. Decapitating opponents, bribing (or murdering) refs, and pushing your opponents into outer space are just some the things that set this game apart from other classic football titles. Add in a great playoff mode, the ability to win games by killing too many of the other team's players, and some pretty solid gross out humour, and you have a game that's playable in 2025 as it was in 1993.My guest this week is the official referee of RTG, Mike The Ref. We had a great time taking some shots at NFL fans while laughing it up over all the insanity that is Mutant League Football. But what about a game that isn't bad, but isn't good? It's just kinda, there? That's how I'd describe WCW Mayhem.The glory days of WCW were long gone by the time Mayhem dropped. THQ was taking their Revenge engine and turning it into WWF WrestleMania 2000, and EA picked up the bony remains of World Championship Wrestling to make a new wrestling game. The end result was Mayhem, a competent wrestling game with little replay value and a barebones career mode.I'm rolling solo this week, and while I still had fun playing WCW Mayhem, it made for a tricky review because there just isn't a lot of meat on the bone. But between the engine, ranting about Hulk Hogan, comparing it to other games from that era, and reminiscing about WCW as a whole, I managed to pry a 3-star match out of our game this week.And before we hit the ring, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!This week, someone asks if I think the big jumps in console generations are a thing of the past? I played it for the first time the month and thought I liked it enough, but some of you worship it like Special K!If you never played it back in '99, Soul Reaver is a little Zelda-ish. Some action, some puzzle solving, a dash of metroidvania. You play as a dude that got killed and is brought back for revenge, and you regularly swap between the physical and spirit realms to solve puzzles and kick ass. But for some reason, it's never really clicked with me. I finally spent a week grinding away at it and while I don't think it's as good as its 8-bit counterparts, I have to admit, it won me over. Contra is gaming done right. Run, shoot, jump. My love of the NES games comes from their snare drum tight controls and tough-but-fair challenge. the SNES entry improves on a lot of the aspects of Contra & Super C: better weapons, level variety, obviously the graphics. I may not like the gameplay as much as the older games, but I can't deny that it levels up in a lot of aspects. And it's still tough as fuck, which I love. But for some reason, I never really gave the first sequel the time of day. And after almost 7 years of podcasts, it's time to right that wrong. I finally played through it and damned if it isn't almost as good as it's older brother. It's the tried and true Mega formula: take down 8 evil robots, steal their weapons, save the world, and die a lot in the process. Like X, it's got those sexy 16-bit graphics, 'Mavericks' instead of robot masters (which are all very fucking cool), and you can still find those Dr. Light chambers to power up with. I think the only thing missing from X2, in my eyes at least, is the nostalgia I have for the first game. And even then, this one holds up just fine. This a great game. My boy Dan from Dissect That Film returns to this week to talk about his favourite MM game in X2. We work through the robot masters, Zero subplot, soundtrack, weapons, and basically just spend an hour fluffing the Blue Bomber. It's a fantastic game. But Gears of War 2 managed to top it in every single way. This isn't just one of the best sequels ever, it's unquestionably one of my favourite games of all-time. The gang is back: Marcus, Dom, Baird, and of course, the Cole Train. The story picks up after the events of the first game, and while the combat remains the same, they found a way to improve on it and throw you into so many different scenarios that it never feels played out or boring. Sick story, new weapons, awesome locations, and you even run around inside a giant worm. How could anyone not love Gears 2?? The Dom to my Marcus, my buddy Tyler, returns to the show this week. I love Gears 2 for the campaign, and Tyler gushes about it as well, but also takes a dive into his love of Horde mode and the rest of the multiplayer offerings Gears 2 has to offer.
