I played half of the first game back in the day, checked out and never came back. So I fired the OG up last week and played most of it, and while I can't call myself a super fan or anything, I'm intrigued to see what comes next with the series.The concept itself is rock solid, and there's some really fun mechanics here. Many have told me this is in their top 2 X games alongside the original, and now that I've played it for myself, I get it.The original trilogy of Mega Man X games on the SNES range from perfection to meh (in my books), so I was curious to see how the series would go once it left the 16-bit era. And while X4 definitely shares some DNA with the very subpar Mega Man 8, it brings the heat in practically every way and is anything but subpar. The free-flowing combat system has been copied over and over, and I'd range that the quality of Arkham City's story, gallery of characters, setting, and graphics have set bars that most modern games still can't touch 15 years later. Add in an adorable sidekick, a badass heroine, and more video game easter eggs than you can count, and you have one hell of a movie.Pending RTG Hall of Famer Mark McCue is my guest this week and we praised the piss out of this movie. Laughing at our favourite scenes, pointing out the best cameos (and speculating on what it cost to get Bowser to appear)...this was just a really fun episode.
