In this interview episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles interviews singer BB from BB & The Honey. BB is an American singer and songwriter who has been an integral part of the Chicago music scene for 20 years.  Audiences say her voice is a blend of Brandy Carlisle, Janice Joplin, Patsy Klein, Stevie Nicks, and Amelda May. Her powerful interpretations range from blues, funk, soul, classic country to jazz, rockabilly, and classic rock. BB & the Honey have released a new EP of original songs called Reckless Heart, which is available on all major streaming platforms.BB reminisces about her first concert at age five, seeing Sean Cassidy at Navy Pier in Chicago, and shares memorable concert experiences with Mumford and Sons, contrasting them with a lackluster performance by Bob Dylan she attended in the early 90s. She discusses a formative experience in her music career when she and a friend were invited to join Arise Records after singing 'Amazing Grace' in a Chicago subway. This fortuitous event laid the groundwork for BB's extensive music journey, performing with various bands and writing a wide range of musical genres from blues, funk, soul, classic country, to jazz and rock. The episode also dives into BB's musical projects, from her early involvement with hip hop group Schmoov and the Family to later bands like Super D, The Jesters, and Seeking Wonderland. BB elaborates on how she transitioned into learning the piano during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed her to contribute more dynamically to her current band. BB & The Honey recently released a new EP called 'Reckless Heart,' comprising four original songs. The interview touches on the practicalities of their live performances, noting the flexibility in band size depending on the venue. BB delves into the recording process of the EP, aiming to capture the live energy of their performances. The episode wraps up with BB talking about their upcoming release party, their ongoing music journey, and where fans can find their music and live performance updates.BANDS: BB & the Honey, Bob Dylan, C&C Music Factory, Chicago, Full Moon Vixen, Groove X, Kris Kross, Lucinda Williams, Modern Day Romeos, Mumford and Sons, Poi Dog Pondering, Santana, Sean Cassidy, Seeking Wonderland, Stock Boy, Super D, The Dead, The Jesters, ZZ TopVENUES: Abbey Pub, Alpine Valley, Bacon Fest, beer fest in Kenosha, Baker House, Crystal Lake, Dole Mansion, Double Door, Goose Island, Hard Rock Cafe, Lake Como, Lou's Lounge, Mars Resort, Naperville, Navy Pier, Riviera, Riviera in Chicago, Ryman, Ryman Theater, Ryman Theatre, Sean Cassidy concert, Subterranean, Tinley Park, Walworth County Fair PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708

If you grew up anywhere near Chicago, the history of JAM Productions is probably a mirror image to your own history as a concert goer. Founded over 50 years ago (and still independent and going strong), JAM has done more to shape the live music landscape in Chicago than just about any entity we can think of. In the late ‘80s and straight out of college, Nick Miller got a job at the powerhouse promotion company and quickly became an important (and beloved) part of the operation. In fact, if you're going to a show in Chicago this week — there's a good chance that Nick might be in the building. On this episode, Nick schools us on what it takes to be a concert promoter, how to make pizzas at Barnaby's, WVVX, guitars, having a Rolodex for a brain, Jeff Beck, Emo & Judy, Nick's band Viceroy, 4 nights with Cheap Trick, the 90s in Chicago, the Rolling Stones at Double Door, Ice T vs. The Police, the band that starts with a “Z” and ends with a “trope”, and an epic round of “What's The Best?!?” featuring the best concerts (or if you're cool, best “shows”). This is a good one.

What I've always appreciated about talking with Art is that he's candid, honest and authentically “him.”   Discussed in this episode: ”Sing Away” (from “Live at the Whisky A Go Go”) - addressing the topics of suicide and bullying, and the emotional response parents have. Why I think Art is an eternal optimist. Art's lyrics can be categorized in three distinct buckets. Everclear's first record deal in the 1990s. Everclear at the Double Door in 1994. Art's guitar room. The adorable bicycles Everclear rides while on the road. Do full-length albums matter anymore? The best way to support Everclear (and other bands). It is fitting that Bruce Adams's new book, the sardonically-titled You're with Stupid: kranky, Chicago and the Reinvention of Indie Music, begins at Jim's Grill off Irving Park Road in the Ravenswood neighborhood on the North Side: It was the first place I remember seeing a promotional poster for this new band, The Smashing Pumpkins, who were regular customers of Bill Choi's Korean-inspired restaurant, when they were first starting out.But let's back up a few years, to set the scene of what was to come. After attending college at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, in the mid-1980s, Adams worked at a record shop and wrote for the fanzine Your Flesh. He caught the indie rock bug, as it were, inspired by the then burgeoning independent music industry that had grown out of labels like Dischord in Washington, DC, Sub Pop in Seattle, and Touch & Go in Chicago, who presented a more artist-friendly path for bands to make a living selling records, CDs and cassettesAdams found his way to Chicago, where, by the mid-1990s, there was a golden age of independent businesses thriving in unison: records labels (Drag City, Thrill Jockey, Atavistic, Bloodshot, Carrot Top), distributors (Ajax, Cargo, Southern), records shops (Reckless, Dusty Groove, Wax Trax, The Quaker Goes Deaf), underground press (the Chicago Reader and New City, but also Lumpen and Stop Smiling), and venues (Cabaret Metro, Lounge Ax, the Empty Bottle, and Double Door). As Adams documents, it was a near-perfect eco-system for creativity and experimentation in a pre-digital age. You're with Stupid is both a cultural history of the Chicago music world at that time, as told through the record labels and distributors that Adams worked for but also a how-to roadmap to founding a DIY operation.  This is my conversation with Bruce Adams about his book and those times.Reading by Bruce AdamsMusic by Labradford

The Giraffes are a cult band from Brooklyn that has been leveling crowds with their signature mixture of heavy rock, punk, metal and surf since 1996. A well-earned reputation for mayhem has followed the band from the start. Their guitarist was shot in the leg outside of a White Castle late one night in Brooklyn after being accosted by an off-duty fire marshal with an itchy trigger finger. The bullet is still lodged in his knee. Their singer Aaron Lazar has suffered multiple Sudden Cardiac Death events. He has a defibrillator implanted in his chest which has erroneously shocked him on stage. During a show at Chicago's legendary Double Door, it sent 700 volts directly into his heart 3 times in 30 seconds. He finished the set. I've known Aaron for more than 20 years now and he's one of my closest friends. We have Been In Some Shit together. We've toured together, I punched him in the neck, I returned his rental car the first time he died, we were in a band together and it broke up in a hail of recrimination. We're still friends. I'm eerily close with his cat, Bill. We talk a lot here about how death renewed his interest in life and I think it's a really useful conversation. We also play a couple of new songs, one from his band D'NT with former Beat the Devil drummer Mitchell King and one from the Giraffes. Enjoy.

From Fat Nut to the Rolling Stones, Double Door has been one of Chicago's premiere music venues.   In a city that's arguably overpacked with live music venues, there are a few whose names stand above the list. Double Door's one of them; the venue opened in Wicker Park in 1994 and quickly became one of the most essential live rooms in Chicago. It played host to bands large and small: How large? Rolling Stones large. How small? It supported Chicago's independent music community from day one.   Double Door disappeared off the map in 2017 when it was evicted from its Wicker Park location. This story has a happy ending, though… Double Door is coming back. The new location is a stunning, classic old Chicago building in Uptown. And its owners, Sean Mulroney and Pete Bruce, are here to talk about rebuilding a building… and rebuilding a brand.   This episode was recorded at the Buona in Skokie (3754 W. Touhy).  Buona's turned your favorite Plant-Based Italian Beefless Sandwich into a BOWL! Complete with sweet peppers and their new Vegan cheese, enjoy comfort by the bowl-ful this winter and cozy up with this twist on a classic today.

Steve talks about hunting down ex-girlfriends to demand answers and Ryan weighs the significance of romance in your teens vs. in your twenties. They both lament the demise of the mix tape and agree that Chicago is an awesome city. Rob Gordon (John Cusack) is the owner of a failing record store in Chicago, where he sells music the old-fashioned way -- on vinyl. Although they have an encyclopedic knowledge of pop music and are consumed by the music scene, it's of no help to Rob, whose needle skips the love groove when his long-time girlfriend, Laura (Iben Hjejle), walks out on him. As he examines his failed attempts at romance and happiness, the process finds him being dragged, kicking and screaming, into adulthood.
