Al posto di David Cronenberg doveva esserci Tim Burton, mentre per il ruolo da protagonista si era pensato a Michael Keaton. E, invece, nei panni della “mosca” ci finì Jeff Goldblum, che contribuì a rendere questo film un pilastro del genere body horror. fWotD Episode 3178: Batman Returns Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 16 January 2026, is Batman Returns.Batman Returns is a 1992 American superhero film directed by Tim Burton and written by Daniel Waters. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, it is the sequel to Batman (1989), also directed by Burton, and the second installment in the Batman film series (1989–1997). The cast includes Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Michael Gough, Pat Hingle, and Michael Murphy. Set during Christmas in Gotham City, the film follows Batman (Keaton) as he confronts corrupt businessman Max Shreck (Walken) and deformed crime boss Oswald Cobblepot / the Penguin (DeVito), whose bid for power threatens the city. Their schemes are further complicated by Shreck's former secretary Selina Kyle (Pfeiffer), who seeks revenge against him as Catwoman.Burton was initially uninterested in directing a sequel to Batman, feeling creatively constrained by Warner Bros.' expectations. He agreed to return only after being granted greater creative control, which included replacing original writer Sam Hamm with Daniel Waters and reuniting with many of his previous collaborators. Waters's script emphasized characterization over plot, and Wesley Strick was later hired for an uncredited rewrite that added, among other elements, a master plan for the Penguin. Filming took place from September 1991 to February 1992 on a budget of $50–80 million, primarily on sets and soundstages at Warner Bros. Studios and the Universal Studios Lot in California. The film's special effects relied mainly on practical techniques and makeup, supplemented with animatronics, limited computer-generated imagery (CGI), and dozens of live penguins. The film's marketing campaign was extensive, featuring brand tie-ins and merchandise intended to replicate the financial success of Batman. Released on June 19, 1992, Batman Returns broke several box-office records and grossed $266.8 million worldwide, becoming the sixth-highest-grossing film of 1992, but fell short of Batman in overall success and longevity. The darker tone, along with violent and sexual content, was cited as alienating family audiences and prompted backlash against marketing partners for promoting the film to children. Critical reception was polarized, though most reviewers praised the principal cast.Following the mixed reception of Batman Returns, Burton was replaced as director for its sequel, Batman Forever (1995), which was developed with a more family-friendly tone. Keaton also declined to return. In the years since its release, Batman Returns has been reappraised as one of the strongest Batman films and a pivotal early example of auteur-driven superhero cinema that helped shape the genre's darker, more ambitious direction. The film is also recognized as an alternative Christmas classic due to its winter setting, festive imagery, and themes of loneliness and isolation. Its story was revisited in the comic series Batman '89 (2021), and Keaton later reprised his version of Batman in The Flash (2023).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:59 UTC on Friday, 16 January 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Batman Returns on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Ruth.
Did you know that inside this amazing lenticular VHS box is an actual movie? It's true! When a truck of "Genetic Material" hits a truck carrying notorious serial killer "Jack Frost" in the sleepy little town of Snowmanton, an immortal killer snowman is born, and orgy of Christmas themed mayhem is set off. (Also, this was great for the video store prank where you'd swap all the Michael Keaton movies with it, and traumatize some little kids.) Matt and Tristan talk Jack Frost.
After finishing Beth Macy's latest bestseller, Paper Girl, I was eager to interview her. Macy, an acclaimed writer known for exploring the forces unraveling America's social fabric, was our guest writer for the Artemis Journal 2015 with her essay "Mining Life Along the River Bank."As a longtime reporter for the Roanoke Times, she witnessed our region endure factory closures, dwindling jobs, opioid addiction, and the hollowing out of our community. Her genuine curiosity has fueled her success, leading to award-winning, bestselling books and a Hulu series based on her book Dopesick, which she co-produced and starred Michael Keaton.Paper Girl is a meticulously researched book in which Macy returns to her roots in Urbana, Ohio. Driven to understand the growing political divide in our country, she spoke with former high school friends, family, and community leaders to explore why three out of four people in the county voted for President Trump. Nearly half the book consists of footnotes, and in-depth research underscoring of her investigation into the issues that have shaped and traumatized her hometown.I couldn't put the book down, and in this podcast episode, you'll hear directly from the writer herself. While our time together only allowed for a glimpse into this remarkable book, there is so much more for you, my listeners, to discover on your own.CALL TO ACTIONThrough the process of writing her book, Beth came to the conclusion she must jump in and run for Congress!Enjoy—and remember, her books are widely available wherever you get your books.https://bethmacyforcongress.com/

In Episode 147 of Badlands Story Hour, Chris Paul and Burning Bright unpack Multiplicity, the Harold Ramis–directed film starring Michael Keaton, through a philosophical and cultural lens. The conversation explores identity, fractured priorities, and the illusion that productivity and time can solve deeper internal disorder. Using the film's cloning premise as a metaphor, the hosts examine modern rat-race culture, false solutions offered by technology, and the temptation to outsource responsibility, purpose, and even selfhood. Themes of Faustian bargains, artificial intelligence, autonomy, and the spiritual cost of chasing efficiency over meaning are woven throughout the discussion, alongside reflections on masculinity, family, work, and personal sovereignty. The episode connects the film's humor to serious questions about control, self mastery, and the danger of multiplying outward solutions without addressing the core of who we are.
Denzember continues with Culture Kitsch host Bobbi Miller joining us to discuss Kenneth Branagh's 1993 Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing. Following his successful Henry V adaptation, Branagh returned to Shakespeare for a much airier, light-hearted affair, fashioning the classic play into an immensely pleasurable studio romantic comedy while preserving the spirit and (more importantly) the language of Much Ado..., assembling a showstopper ensemble led by Branagh, Emma Thompson, Michael Keaton, Keanu Reeves, and Denzel as Don Pedro of Aragon, nearly 30 years before he would take on The Tragedy of Macbeth. We begin with a discussion of Branagh's formal tendencies, how his maximalism works for the genre, and illuminate his underremarked upon technical prowess. Then, we discuss what Branagh's Much Ado... preserves from Shakespeare's stage, what it omits, and how these ommissions speak to the film's position as an End of History artifact interested in reifying traditional family values centered around monogamous, heterosexual couplings. Finally, we discuss how Denzel's Don Pedro is utliized narratively and thematically in the film, and how Denzel's movie star persona and race factor into our perception of the character. My guest this week is Beth Macy, the award-winning author of three New York Times bestselling books that examine rural communities left behind by corporate greed and political indifference.Beth's first book, “Factory Man”, explored the aftermath of globalization on rural communities and won a J. Anthony Lucas Prize. “Dopesick,” her investigation of the opioid crisis, won an LA Times Book Prize and was described as “a masterwork of narrative nonfiction” by the New York Times. (It was also made into a Peabody- and Emmy-award winning Hulu series starring Michael Keaton.)Her newest book, “Paper Girl,” has just been released and is a combination of memoir and reported analysis of the rural-urban divide told through the lenses of backward mobility, political polarization, and the decimation of local news. Beth lives in Roanoke, Virginia. We covered:- How politics divided her family, and the skills she used to write a book about it- How a Pell grant helped Beth out of poverty, into college, and ultimately into a career in journalism- Publishing her first book at age fifty- Why writing books is easier than writing for a newspaper- Her telltale signs for when she's stumbled on a good story- Getting through the big-city gatekeepers to tell stories of small towns- Why the collapse of local news and public education are playing such a huge role in making us so polarized- How policy changes shape our everyday reality- Using personal deadlines as an “anxiety-management tool”- How clustering tasks–such as reporting, interviewing, writing, and editing helps give structure to a long-term deadlineConnect with Beth on Bluesky and/or Instagram @bethmacy.For full show notes with links to everything we discuss, plus bonus photos!, visit katehanley.substack.com.Thank you for listening! And thanks to this week's sponsor, Aqua Tru. Everyone longs for the glory days—that moment in life or career when everything clicked and it felt like you couldn't miss. On this episode, we're talking about actors and filmmakers who decided, decades later, to try and capture that magic again. From Tom Cruise revving back up as Maverick, to Michael Keaton slipping on the wig and makeup for Beetlejuice once more, to icons like Harrison Ford, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Mark Hamill stepping back into their legendary roles—we're digging into what it means when stars revisit past hits. We also look at directors like Tim Burton, Ridley Scott, and Roland Emmerich returning to the worlds that made them famous, and comic book legends Frank Miller, Chris Claremont, and Jim Starlin revisiting their signature creations and stories. Oh, and we've got a confession about this version of Sidebar that fits right in with this theme. Plus, we ask: – What really drives these creative run-backs—fan service, nostalgia, or the quest for relevance? – Do these returns add to a legacy, or water it down? – And is there any "nostalgia porn" we'd actually welcome?

“IT'S SHOWTIME!“Happy Halloween everyone! We hope you have a good night on the best holiday on the planet, and to celebrate we are releasing an spooky themed episode, just a year and some change after recording it! This episode will be on, Beetlejuice (1988,) directed by Tim Burton, starring Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Michael Keaton as the titular character himself!Tim Burton was the director for the odd ducks in our formative years, but what is it like revisiting peak Burton? Before the dark times, before the live-action Alice in Wonderlands? We talk about the classic Burton aesthetic that really came to fruition in what would be his second feature-length film. We talk about it's charm, but also how problematic parts of it are when considering some rather tone deaf takes he's had later on in his career. Tim Burton is no saint, but he's not the most controversial person in the film, not that it's a competitionIt wouldn't be Beetlejuice without Michael Keaton though. His performance has definitely withstood the test of time, even if some of the things his character are doing are definitely inappropriate and perhaps not as funny as we once thought they were. Keaton takes his limited screen time and created a character that got his own animated show, where he was retconned into a chaotic good, undead bestie of Lydia. Is the film just the Michael Keaton show though? Absolutely not. The film has an incredible cast and there is not a dull moment on the screen. Winona Ryder playing an over the top goth that fringes on parody, Baldwin and Davis playing the sweetest couple to ever appear in a Burton film to contrast the villainous Deetzs, particularly Catherine O'hara's Delia and her best friend Ortho, played by Glenn Shadix (RIP.) We get into some behind the scenes as well! We talk about the transformation the film went through from the first draft to the final product. Pittsburgh officially has its own Walk of Fame and Michael Keaton showed up to celebrate. (Too bad his name was spelled wrong on his plaque!) Host Megan Harris was there for the ceremony and shares the highlights, including a touching moment from Fred Rogers' children. She, executive producer Mallory Falk, and producer Sophia Lo also discuss a compromise over the Penn Avenue bike lane, a new plan to get rid of abandoned boats along the North Shore, and why the Pens gave up exclusive development rights to the Lower Hill. “What's the first thing that made you laugh today?”That's how Sandy kicks off this episode, setting the tone for a morning packed with unexpected stories, quirky trends, and laugh-out-loud moments. Joined by his quick-witted wife Trisha, Sandy dives into the chaos of “Fake Fall” in Texas, where sweater weather in the morning turns into heat stroke by noon. This episode's centerpiece is a jaw-dropping gorilla story from Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Sandy and Trisha recount their up-close encounter with a territorial silverback who snatched a female's food bowl—only to make a dramatic statement by peeing in it! Their storytelling brings the scene to life, blending humor and empathy for the gorilla's “sad gorilla heart.” Trisha's background as a lifelong animal lover and zoo enthusiast adds depth and authenticity to the tale, making it a must-hear for anyone who loves wild animal antics. Other highlights include:The Pope's baseball loyalty: Hear how Pope Leo, a Chicago native, hilariously defends his beloved White Sox in Vatican City, roasting a Cubs fan with a quick-witted response.Pumpkin coffee trend: Discover the bizarre new craze at Starbucks—customers bringing hollowed-out mini pumpkins for their drinks—and why some baristas are not amused.Grubhub's snooze insurance: Sandy and Trisha debate whether college students should get a do-over meal if they fall asleep before their food arrives, and share their own stories about the high cost of food delivery.Diane Keaton's Hollywood connections: Learn the surprising link between Michael Keaton, Diane Keaton, and Woody Allen's classic film “Annie Hall,” including one of Sandy's favorite movie quotes.Notable Quotes:“Sweaters in the morning and heat stroke by noon. I get you, doesn't it?”“He was all very banging his chest, running into the room, grabbing the bowl. He did a little spin as he moved into the next room and then just full on peed in her bowl.”“Okay, we can walk to the curb from here.”Guest Insights:Trisha's love for animals and her knack for storytelling shine throughout the episode, making her the perfect co-host for tales of zoo drama and everyday absurdities. In this segment of The Ben and Skin Show, Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray dive into a whirlwind of celebrity news and personal reflections, kicking things off with a somber yet heartfelt tribute to R&B icon D'Angelo, whose untimely passing at 51 from pancreatic cancer left fans reeling. Skin shares a deeply personal story about his connection to D'Angelo's music, including seeing him live in Dallas three times since 1995. But it's not all heavy. The gang lightens the mood with a hilarious breakdown of D'Angelo's infamous “Untitled” music video — yes, the one with the V. KT confesses it inspired him to start doing sit-ups at age 11, while Ben and Skin riff on the absurdity of being a reluctant sex symbol. Cue the panty-throwing concert stories and a perfectly timed jab: “No one wants to be R. Kelly. Hindsight.”The segment also touches on the passing of Diane Keaton (no, she's not related to Michael Keaton — we Googled it too), and the surprising hospitalization of Home Alone star Daniel Stern, prompting KT to jokingly predict he might be next in the celebrity “comes-in-threes” curse. From gut-punching grief to gut-busting laughs, this episode is a rollercoaster of emotion, nostalgia, and classic Ben and Skin banter.
