A Season of Mercy: Humble Prayer and the Gift of Indulgences Today's Homily reflects on what it means to pray in a way that God truly hears us. Sin not only offends God but causes harm that must be repaired . . . either in this life through penance or in purgatory. The Church, in her mercy, offers special indulgences in the first eight days of November to help souls in purgatory, especially through cemetery visits, prayer, sacramental confession, and Communion. The Shrine's annual Novena for the Faithful Departed is also highlighted as a powerful opportunity to assist loved ones. It goes without saying that War is Peace, especially when the President of Peace continually threatens war or supports the same indirectly: from Gaza to Venezuela and now Nigeria. The President posted this threat to Nigeria over the Halloween weekend: “If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,' to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities. I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians!” In response, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth responded: “Yes sir… The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria — and anywhere — must end immediately. The Department of War is preparing for action. The total number includes civilian deaths, terror group deaths, and Nigerian Armed Forces deaths. Of the total deaths, 30,880 were civilians. The religions of 7,722 victims are unknown. The report says further: “The ratio of Christians to Muslims killed rises significantly when the religious composition of the states is taken into consideration. Looking at the overall numbers, the ratio of Christians to Muslims killed was 2.7:1; the ratio of Christians to Muslims abducted was 1.4:1. As Fr. Chris Alar explains, the evening we now call Halloween began not as a pagan ritual, but as a sacred Christian vigil—All Hallows' Eve, the holy night before the solemnity of All Saints' Day. This feast, instituted in the 700s, has always been a time to honor the saints and pray for the faithful departed. The Church's ancient practice of vigils reflected the truth that holy days begin at sundown, anticipating the joy of what is to come.Many claim Halloween is rooted in paganism, yet history says otherwise. Popes Gregory III and IV, who established the feast and its vigil, had no knowledge of the Celtic festival of Samhain. While certain customs like bonfires, costumes, and carved lanterns existed in pagan Europe, their Christian meaning transformed them: light overcoming darkness, prayers for the dead, and the triumph of holiness over sin. As with the Christmas tree, these cultural remnants were baptized—not banned—by the Church.Our Catholic ancestors saw All Hallows' Eve as a time to remember that life on earth is fleeting and that Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell are real. The “veil” between the visible and invisible was thought to thin, reminding us of the souls who need our prayers. Even “trick or treating” began as the holy custom of souling—children receiving soul cakes in exchange for praying for the dead. The jack-o'-lantern, too, once symbolized the light of Christ and the souls awaiting redemption.Halloween became distorted after the Reformation, when anti-Catholic sentiment labeled the feast “pagan.” Puritans even outlawed it in early America, erasing its sacred meaning. But the Church has never ceased to teach that this vigil belongs to Christ. It is not a night to glorify evil, witchcraft, or fear—but a night to honor the saints, pray for the departed, and rejoice in God's victory over death.“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). St. Jude offers us an example of how we are to become dwelling places of the Lord Jesus. When we follow his commands, Jesus resides in us and our love overflows and we must share his love with those who do not yet know him, like St. Jude. This blogcast explores “A Dwelling Place" from the Ad Infinitum blog, written by Victor David and read by Sarah Scalfaro.I have always had a special admiration for St. Jude. Growing up, my home parish was the Church of St. Jude. I can still remember my mom telling me to pray to the saint whenever I felt that I was facing an impossible task. Legend says that since his name was so close to that of Judas, many people did not pray to him, for fear of confusing the two. To show his thanks to people who did remember him, St. Jude was willing to be extra fervent in bringing the faithful's requests to the Lord. In John's Gospel, towards the end of the Last Supper, Christ observes that soon he will no longer be with his disciples, but that he will soon reveal himself. Jude asks Jesus, “Master, [then] what happened that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” (John 14:22) Our Lord responded, “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him” (John 14:23). He is telling his disciple, and us, that whoever holds God's teachings in his or her heart and acts accordingly is filled with the Spirit of the Lord.The Feast of Sts. Simon and Jude remind us all to be God's dwelling place. While we do not know much about the lives of either saint, tradition tells us that Simon was called the Zealot in the gospels and Acts (Lk 6:15; Acts 1:13). There is some debate to whether this means he was an ardent disciple of Jesus or that he was a former member of the Zealot sect that advocated for the violent overthrow of the Roman occupation. If the latter is to be believed, then Simon truly demonstrates that no one is beyond becoming a dwelling place of the Lord. The Zealots were known to use violence to advocate noncompliance with the Roman authorities. Nevertheless, tradition and legend hold that Simon helped to spread the Good News, peacefully, through much of the Middle East. It was that conversion of heart that truly made Simon a dwelling place of the Lord.Legend tells us that both saints suffered martyrdom while spreading the faith in Syria. Tradition holds that Simon was either crucified or sawed in half while Jude was clubbed to death or beheaded by an axe. Yet, in the face of adversity and hostility, they continued to profess the faith that had been revealed to them until the very end. So, the question remains: How do we become God's dwelling place? The answer is simple – follow what Jesus told St. Jude at the Last Supper: love the Lord and keep His Word. When we accept and follow the Word of God, He truly and fully enters into our lives. By keeping His word on our minds and in our hearts, we make ourselves His dwelling place. Sts. Simon and Jude truly became dwelling places of God. What happens when God resides with someone? He or she becomes so full of God's love that it must be spread. That is what happened to Sts. Simon and Jude and that is what is possible for all of us. Among them were the first saints from Venezuela and Papua New Guinea, including St. Peter To Rot, martyred for defending Christian marriage during World War II, and St. José Gregorio Hernández, the beloved “Doctor of the Poor.” Also canonized was St. Bartolo Longo, a former Satanist turned zealous apostle of the Rosary who built the famous Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii. Patrick shares each saint’s extraordinary witness of faith – from the rainforest missions of St. Maria Troncatti to the charitable works of St. Vincenza Maria Poloni and St. Maria del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, who overcame disability to found a religious order.

Friends of the Rosary,Yesterday, in St. Peter's Square, Rome, Pope Leo XIV proclaimed seven new saints, “witnesses who with God's grace, kept the lamp of faith burning.”“They became lamps capable of spreading the light of Christ,” the Holy Father said in his homily.“May their intercession assist us in our trials and their example inspire us in our shared vocation to holiness,” he said.During the canonization Mass, unfolded under a bright Roman sun, the Pope declared the first two Venezuelan saints: St. José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, known as “the doctor of the poor,” and St. María del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, a religious sister born without her left arm who went on to found the Servants of Jesus in Caracas in 1965.Among the new saints were also two martyrs. St. Peter To Rot, a lay catechist martyred in Papua New Guinea during the Japanese occupation in World War II, became the country's first saint. To Rot defied Japanese authorities who permitted polygamy, defending Christian marriage until his death.St. Ignatius Maloyan, an Armenian Catholic archbishop, was executed during the Armenian genocide after refusing to convert to Islam. “I consider the shedding of my blood for my faith to be the sweetest desire of my heart,” Maloyan said before his death. “If I am tortured for the love of him who died for me, I will be among those who will have joy and bliss, and I will have obtained to see my Lord and my God.”Among the most well-known of the new saints is St. Bartolo Longo, a 19th-century Italian lawyer who was Satanic before returning to the Church with zeal.After his conversion, Bartolo Longo became the Apostle of the Rosary, dedicating his life to promoting the rosary and building the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii, now one of Italy's most beloved Marian pilgrimage sites.In his homily, Pope Leo XVI said that “what is most precious in the Lord's eyes” is “faith, namely, the bond of love between God and man.”“Our relationship with God is of the utmost importance because at the beginning of time he created all things out of nothing and, at the end of time, he will save mortal beings from nothingness,” the pope said. “A world without faith, then, would be populated by children living without a Father, that is, by creatures without salvation.”In addition to Venezuela's St. María del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, the Italian foundress St. Vincenza Maria Poloni was also canonized. Poloni founded the Sisters of Mercy of Verona and is remembered for her tireless service to the poor, even risking her life during the cholera epidemic of 1836.Pope Leo also canonized St. Maria Troncatti, an Italian Salesian sister who spent 44 years as a missionary among the Indigenous Shuar people in Ecuador's Amazon rainforest. Known affectionately as “Madrecita,” or “little mother,” she served as a nurse, surgeon, and catechist with missionary zeal.The canonization coincided with World Mission Sunday.
