The final day of filming SOUL ON FIRE began before 5 a.m. on Friday. It ended 19 hours later, getting home after midnight. It was a beautiful, exhausting, unforgettable day. We filmed some of the most iconic scenes in the movie, including my graduation from St. Louis University and Beth and I's wedding at the Shrine of Saint Joseph. After countless loops of Sweet Caroline, it eventually went silent. Sean McNamara rose from his director's chair, took off his headset and proclaimed loudly, "That's a wrap!" After eight years of effort, the movie had been filmed. Throughout that long day, my phone never stopped buzzing. By the time I went to bed, it had logged 250 text messages. Then Monday arrived. I rolled over, looked down at my phone and squinted. Hmmm. Strange. Zero messages. By noon there were a total of three. Two were from Beth reminding me to take the trash out. The sudden change made me realize something about what truly makes a life meaningful. Let me explain.

Today, Fr. Bill Hayward, MIC, shared reflections from Vietnam, where the Marian community continues to grow, and spoke about the importance of wisdom, understanding, and spiritual judgment. To grow in Christ, we need the wisdom to discern what is good and the understanding to make decisions according to God's will. Spiritual judgment is not simply about deciding what is right or wrong; it is about allowing our choices to be guided by the Holy Spirit, the sacraments, and the wisdom of the Church. Fr. Bill reminded us that God's judgment always works together with His mercy, helping us make decisions that lead us and others closer to Christ. Fr. Bill presented the Blessed Virgin Mary as a beautiful model of spiritual discernment. Mary knew who she was before God, listened attentively to Him, and freely made decisions rooted in faith rather than fear or intimidation. Her wisdom and openness to God allowed her life to become a means through which others could encounter and grow in Christ. Like Mary and the saints, we are called to deepen our relationship with God so that we may also come to know ourselves more clearly. By remaining connected to the Holy Spirit and learning from Mary's example, we can make wise spiritual decisions with freedom, trust, and confidence in God's mercy. ★ Support this podcast ★

In this powerful homily, Fr. Chris Alar reflects on how Jesus, even as the Son of God, respected the Scriptures, followed the teachings of the faith, and attended the synagogue. His example reminds us of the importance of obedience, formation, and gathering as a community to hear God's Word. But Fr. Chris also challenges us with an important question: Are we rejecting the message because of the messenger? Throughout salvation history, God has often chosen unexpected and imperfect human instruments to communicate His truth. We must learn to look beyond the messenger so we do not miss what God is trying to tell us. At the heart of that message is the true meaning of love. In a world where love is often defined primarily by feelings, emotions, or personal identity, Christ reveals something much deeper: love is willing the good of another, even at a cost to ourselves. “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends” (John 15:13). True love is not simply something we feel; it is something we choose and are willing to do for another. Fr. Chris invites us to examine whether today's understanding of love has become inverted and to rediscover the sacrificial love Christ Himself lived: don't be distracted by the messenger; listen to the message of love. On the Memorial of St. John the Baptist, Fr. Anthony Gramlich, MIC, reflected on John as the courageous voice crying out in the desert, calling people to repentance and conversion. Real sinners heard John's message, recognized their need for God, and came to be baptized. His life reminds us that people are drawn to genuine virtue and holiness, not to hypocrisy or pride. John was a true prophet who was not afraid to speak the truth, even when confronting King Herod and knowing the consequences he might face. Fr. Anthony emphasized that St. John the Baptist was also a voice of conscience. When we refuse to listen to the truth or silence the voice of our conscience, we symbolically “behead” that voice, just as John was beheaded for speaking the truth. His witness challenges us to have the courage to listen to God's voice within us and to follow the truth, even when it is difficult. On his memorial, we ask St. John the Baptist to pray for us, that we may recognize, listen to, and faithfully follow our conscience. In today's homily, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC emphasized that sacrificial love is the path that leads us to Heaven. Jesus makes clear that anyone who desires to follow Him must be willing to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. If we continually place ourselves, our comfort, and our desires above Christ, we lose sight of what it means to be His disciple. Fr. Chris explained that suffering, when united with Christ, can become a means of salvation because it joins us to the way of the Cross. Just as Peter tried to persuade Jesus to avoid suffering; echoing the temptation of Satan, Jesus firmly corrected him, showing that the Christian life is not about escaping every sacrifice but trusting and following God's way.To deny ourselves does not mean that the good things and pleasures of life are wrong. Rather, it means that they cannot become the center of our lives or take the place that belongs to Christ. Following Jesus requires us to leave our comfort zones, surrender our own plans, and allow Him to lead us. We do not tell Jesus where He should take us; He leads, and we follow. True discipleship therefore means choosing love even when it costs us something, accepting sacrifices with faith, and keeping Christ above our own preferences. Today, Fr. Anthony Gramlich, MIC, offers a remarkable reflection on St. Bartholomew the Apostle, also known as Nathanael; a man of great faith and honesty, “without duplicity.” When he encountered Jesus, he recognized Him as the fulfillment of the prophecies and came to understand that He was truly the Lamb of God. Fr. Anthony reflects on Bartholomew's profound witness and his brutal martyrdom, traditionally believed to have been skinned alive. Even Michelangelo's Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel depicts the apostle holding his own skin; a haunting reminder of the price he was willing to pay for Christ. St. Bartholomew's story is not simply about suffering, it is about fortitude, courage, and total surrender to Jesus. The apostles were imperfect men, yet they allowed Christ to transform them into fearless witnesses who were willing to give their very lives for the Gospel. As we reflect on Bartholomew's words and example, may we too ask for the grace to stand firm in our faith, confront the challenges of our time, and say with our lives: “Take my skin, take my life; I belong to Jesus.” Even death cannot have the final word, because Christ promises the resurrection of the body. In today's homily, Fr. Chris Alar explains the incredible authority Jesus entrusted to His Church: the power to forgive sins. When we go to Confession, Christ Himself forgives us through the priest. Jesus gave His Apostles the “keys of the Kingdom of Heaven,” giving the Church real authority to bind and loose on earth and in heaven. This authority continues through the priesthood and the Sacraments. Fr. Chris reminds us that Jesus established a visible Church with Peter as the rock and apostolic succession continuing after the Apostles. The Pope does not replace Christ; Christ remains the Head of the Church, while the Pope and priests serve with authority delegated by Him. Though the Church is made up of imperfect human beings, her mission and authority are divine. This week's guest Jonathan Kuplack, an ultra-runner who ran 35 miles a day for 100 days across America ending at the Shrine of the North American Martyrs on Divine Mercy Sunday.

In this homily for the Feast of Saint Pius X, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC reflects on the saint's strong rejection of Modernism and its weakening of objective truth. He explains that Christian love cannot be reduced to simply being nice, avoiding conflict, or affirming everything. True Christian love means willing the good of another person, especially their eternal salvation, and therefore requires us to remain faithful to God's truth even when that truth is difficult or unpopular. Fr. Chris reminds us that truth must always be spoken with mercy, humility, and compassion. Fraternal correction, when motivated by genuine concern for another person's soul rather than judgment or pride, can be a profound act of love. Following the example of Saint Pius X, Christians are called to reject a lack of truth while also rejecting harshness: true love neither sacrifices truth for niceness nor uses truth without mercy, but lovingly guides souls toward conversion, reconciliation with God, and salvation. Known for his profound Marian devotion, St. Bernard even appears in Dante's Paradiso as the final spiritual guide who leads Dante through Mary toward his vision of God and eternity. Fr. Chris also highlights the powerful devotion associated with the Shoulder Wound of Christ, traditionally connected with St. Bernard. We are invited to contemplate the hidden suffering Jesus endured on His shoulder while carrying the heavy Cross for us. This devotion reminds us that following Christ means accepting our own crosses with faith and love, trusting that our suffering, united with His, can lead us closer to God and ultimately to the joy of eternal life. In today's homily, Fr. Mark Baron, MIC reflects on God's abundant generosity and the dangers of pride and envy through the Gospel parable of the workers in the vineyard. On the Memorial of St. John Eudes, he also explores the profound union of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and how their united love leads us into the mystery of Divine Mercy. We are invited to rejoice in God's goodness toward others, receive His grace with gratitude, and allow our hearts to be transformed by His merciful love. The homily ultimately challenges us to examine our hearts: Do we rejoice when God is generous to someone else, or do we compare their blessings with our own? The remedy for pride and envy is to allow our hearts to be formed after the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. When we recognize everything as grace, another person's blessing no longer diminishes us. Instead, it becomes another reason to praise the inexhaustible generosity and mercy of God. In this powerful homily, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC reflects on Jesus' warning about the trap of riches and the difficulty they can create on the road to salvation. Wealth itself is not a sin, but attachment to money, possessions, comfort, and self-sufficiency can slowly replace our dependence on God. The Gospel challenges us to examine where we place our security: in what we possess, or in Jesus Christ? The central lesson can be expressed simply: Have things, but possess nothing in your heart except God. We can receive material blessings with gratitude without allowing them to replace the Lord. And if God calls us to surrender something—money, possessions, comfort, status, or another attachment—we should be willing to give it up. Wealth can make salvation more difficult when it creates pride, selfishness, attachment, or the illusion that we do not need God. But wealth can also become an instrument of love when it is placed at God's service. Fr. Tyler Mentzer, MIC's homily centered on the call to give everything to the Lord and the profound joy that comes from responding wholeheartedly to His voice. Jesus tells us that if we wish to be perfect, we must be willing to give up everything and follow Him. The question for each of us is: What am I still holding on to that prevents me from giving myself completely to the Lord? Fr. Tyler pointed to St. Anthony of the Desert as a powerful example. St. Anthony heard Christ's invitation and took it seriously, giving away his possessions and ultimately offering his entire life to Christ. His response became an example of the radical surrender found in monasticism and consecrated life—giving everything to the Father. Fr. Tyler connected this with the Marian Fathers and the beautiful renewal of vows celebrated last weekend, when the Marians gathered around the sanctuary and renewed their offering of themselves to God. But this invitation to surrender is not only for those in consecrated life. Each of us should ask: What am I holding on to? What is the Lord asking me to place into His hands? It might be possessions, but it can also be our plans, comfort, control, pride, fears, resentments, ambitions, relationships, or simply our desire to have things our own way. The central question of the homily, then, is deeply personal: What are you holding on to that you need to give up for the Lord? St. Anthony gave everything. The Marians express this surrender through their vows. Each of us is called to surrender according to our own vocation. The more freely we give ourselves to the Lord, the more freely He can fill us with the fruits of His Kingdom—especially that supernatural joy, the joy that no one can take away. Chris Alar, MIC reflects on the extraordinary faith of the Gentile woman who humbly approached Jesus, trusting that even the “scraps” from the Master's table were enough to bring healing and mercy.Her faith reminds us that great faith can be found in unexpected places. Although she had not received the spiritual privileges given to Israel, she continued to believe—even when Jesus seemed silent. She did not walk away. She remained humble, persistent, and confident in His mercy.Fr. Chris challenges us as Catholics to recognize how much we have received: the Eucharist, Confession, the Sacraments, the Blessed Mother, and countless graces from God. Yet sometimes those who have received less appear to trust God more deeply and make greater use of the faith they have been given.When God seems silent, do not stop praying. His silence does not mean He has abandoned or ignored us. Sometimes He is strengthening, testing, and purifying our faith, teaching us to trust Him more completely.The Gentile woman was willing to wait for the scraps—but what she received was the abundant mercy of Christ.May we never take God's gifts for granted. May we approach His table with gratitude, humility, and persistent faith, remembering that Jesus is the Bread of Life, and even the smallest gift of His grace can transform our lives and lead us toward eternal life.

On August 14th. 2026 ; Fr. Daniel Klimek's homily presents St. Maximilian Kolbe as a fearless missionary of the Immaculate, whose deep love for the Blessed Virgin Mary gave him the courage to defend the Catholic faith, evangelize those opposed to the Church, and remain faithful even through persecution, brutality, and death at Auschwitz. From his encounters with atheists, Freemasons, and unbelievers to his work with magazines, radio, and new technology, Kolbe understood that Christians are called not to retreat from the world, but to enter it with truth, charity, and a desire for conversion.His life is a call to reject fear and compromise. St. Maximilian fought spiritual and cultural opposition through prayer, mobilization, evangelization, sacrifice, and media, always seeking the salvation of souls rather than hatred of his enemies. He showed that true freedom belongs to the person who knows he belongs to Christ through the Immaculate.The homily also challenges Catholics today to sanctify the media. When the culture pressures Christians to remain silent or abandon the faith, St. Maximilian's example says NO. He used the newest means of communication available to proclaim the ancient and unchanging Gospel.
