The mainstream news media struggles to understand the power of social media. In contrast, conspiracy advocates, malicious political movements, and even foreign governments have long understood how to harness the power of fear and the fear of power into lucrative outlets for outrage and money. But what happens when the messengers of “inside knowledge” go too far? Author Tea Krulos tells the story of one man, Richard McCaslin, whose fractured thinking made him the ideal consumer of even the most arcane of conspiracy theories. Acting on the daily rants of Alex Jones and his ilk, McCaslin takes matters into his own hands to stop the unseen powers behind the world's disasters who congregate at conspiracy world's Mecca—The Bohemian Grove. It all goes wrong with terrible consequences for the man who styled himself The Phantom Patriot. McCaslin is not alone, as conspiracy-driven political action has bubbled its way up from the margins of society to the White House. It's no longer a lone deranged kook convinced of getting secret messages from a cereal box; now, it's slick videos and well-funded outrage campaigns ready to peddle the latest innuendos and lies in hopes of harnessing the chaos for political gain. What is the long-term effect on people who believe these barely believable stories? Who benefits, and who pays the price? In American Madness: The Story of the Phantom Patriot and How Conspiracy Theories Hijacked American Consciousness (Feral House, 2020), Krulos investigates and explains the power of conspiracy, and the shared madness it brings on the American psyche. Tea Krulos is a freelance journalist and author from Milwaukee, WI. Some of his favorite subjects to explore include subcultures and social movements, weird news, the paranormal, and strange personalities. He also writes about local art and entertainment, lifestyle, and food/drink for publications like Milwaukee Magazine, Shepherd Express, and Milwaukee Record. His five non-fiction books are American Madness, Wisconsin Legends & Lore, Apocalypse Any Day Now, Monster Hunters, and Heroes in the Night. He's also been published in places like Atlas Obscura, Fortean Times, and Scandinavian Traveler and writes a weekly column called “Tea's Weird Week” at teakrulos.com. Tyler Thier is a faculty member and administrator in the Department of Writing Studies & Rhetoric at Hofstra University. He regularly writes and teaches cultural criticism, and his scholarship is concerned with malicious rhetoric and dangerous media—specifically, extremist manifestos. Learn more about your ad choices. You've probably noticed if you've been following us for some time, that we have a slight bias for women who are working hard to make Milwaukee a better place for EVERYONE. We love a good DIY story, and this week's guest Symphony Swan is literally building her dream from the ground up. Or should we say, giving her dream a makeover. Voted Milwaukeean of the Year by The Shepherd Express, Symphony is turning her childhood home into The Cr8TV House, a creative gallery and workspace for black and brown and other marginalized artists to nurture their talents and artistry to help solve complex problems. (You'll hear what that means in the episode). This is about a space, but it's a conversation about so much more: family, community, inclusion and belonging, and the role of art in our society to shape the future where there is a (CR8TV) space at the table for everyone. Listen as we talk about … How the death of her mother and father in quick succession changed her world entirely and threw her headlong into her dream of owning a creative space. Her word of the year, ‘courage' and why she's doing things that scare herAnd why she believes in transparency and showing people what's happening behind the scenes (even if it's messy and beautifully complex). The important lesson she learned about communication, forgiveness and relationships with the passing of her father. Locals and Links we love! In this episode of the pod, we re-introduce the show as “Creative MKE.” Moving forward, episodes will feature a shorter format, have a focus on the creative economy of Milwaukee -- and will be sponsored by the https://shepherdexpress.com/ (Shepherd Express). This episode finds Elisabeth in conversation with the Co-Founders of LoCo+, Kate Atwood and Megan Matousek. LoCo+ is a streaming platform that seeks to engage creators in specific communities (Atlanta, Denver, and now, Milwaukee) and enable them to leverage their intellectual property in a more direct way. Unlike models of streaming like YouTube and Spotify, LoCo+ offers artists the opportunity to host and merchandise their work through paywalls, ticketing, and more. It also gives the artist access to the data of fans and followers who engage with them. Through LoCo+, unlike all other streaming services, users can seek content through the lens of location. Matousek describes the LoCo+ UX experience as Netflix on the front end, and YouTube on the back end. Throughout the discussion, the group touches on art as a form of storytelling — and a vehicle for human connection and growth, Milwaukee's position as an under-the-radar hub for arts and culture production, the disempowerment that artists face when attempting to build fan and patron bases everywhere at once, and the concept of the LoCo+ platform being a mechanism to “teach emerging creators to fish” for their long-term financial success through leveraging technological tools. https://www.golocoplus.com/ (LoCo+) is hosting a https://www.eventbrite.com/e/loco-mke-creator-launch-mimosa-mixer-tickets-418034772257 (Creator Launch Mimosa Mixer) on Saturday, Oct 29, at NO Studios in conjunction with NEWwaukee and MKE LAX. I interviewed Freelance Writer Tea Krulos, on his story about Richard McCaslin, a conspiracy theorist who was very talented and intelligent, but actually went too far by going into the infamous Bohemian Grove and actually set it on fire. McCaslin went into the grove heavily armed, thinking there were children that were going to be sacrificed being held prisoner there. And the story goes deeper as Tea and I talk about his book: "American Madness, The Story of the Phantom Patriot and How Conspiracy Theories hijacked American Consciousness, link for the book will be below, besides this I also talked with Tea about His work on his book "Heroes in the Night, The Real Life Super Hero Movement", where real life people take it upon themselves to become vigilantes and hit the streets to fight crime. We also talked about high conspiracy subjects like qanon and Flat Earth About Tea Krulos: Tea Krulos is a freelance writer and author from Milwaukee, WI. Some of his favorite subjects to explore and write about include unique and unusual subcultures, people, and places, as well as art and music. Krulos's first book is a non-fiction titled Heroes in the Night: Inside the Real Life Superhero Movement, a thorough investigation of a movement or subculture of people who call themselves “Real Life Super Heroes” and adopt their own costumed personas and hit the street to fight injustice. His second book, Monster Hunters: On the Trail With Ghost Hunters, Bigfooters, Ufologists, and Other Paranormal Investigators, was published in June 2015, from Chicago Review Press. Website(s):

WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST Episode 52 DONOMA Donoma is an eclectic Rock 'n' Roll band out of Kenosha, Wi., refusing to fall under one genre When modern rock band Donoma decided to head back in to the studio to record their third full length album, they decided it wasn't enough to match the success of 2017's “Falling Forward”. That would be fine for many bands as that record gained them airplay on more than 120 terrestrial radio stations and helped them secure direct concert support for the likes of Soul Asylum, Meat Puppets, Candlebox, Tantric, and Rusted Root along with many top billing shows. For this album the band put three simple rules in place. First, to lyrically examine the world around them and to not shy away from stating where they stood. Second, to keep production to a minimum. And finally, to make a cohesive album that re-imagined rock and roll's glory days. On “American Rust”, Donoma burst through expectations. With eight songs blazing through at thirty-four minutes, listeners are taken on a journey through today's America with all of its hopes and dreams and flaws. The album opens with “Rustbelt Tragedy”, a no holds barred tribute to the American worker and ends with “Road Song”, which tells the story of one man's realization that he must fight for what he believes in. Between those staggering bookends, Donoma tackles millennial angst with the punky “Nobody Wants Us”, race relations on “Hands Are Up”, the young dreamer coming to America on the lilting “Maria”, the tour-deforce rallying cry of “Common Man”, climate change on “Home”, and finally an assault on gun violence and the N.R.A. in the chilling “Ballad of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.” Paddy Fineran of Music Matters says that “American Rust” is “delivered with a steely focus on melody, moxie, and mettle with a fair amount of magic thrown in”, and “This is what music lovers have been waiting twenty years for, the return of great rock n' roll.” The Wisconsin Gazette called Donoma, “a group known for its diverse music, eccentric attitude, and outspoken activism.” The Wisconsin State Journal pitched Donoma as, “one of the most eclectic bands in the state.” Wisconsin's top music paper, Shepherd Express added, “The band has an attacking sound, the raw energy of artists in rebellion … Donoma merges influences ranging from punk to Pearl Jam in to a Frankenstew of menace and compassion.” Web www.donomatribe.com Twitter twitter.com/donomatribe/ Instagram instagram.com/donomatribe Facebook facebook.com/donomatribe Music Links: Spotify https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://open.spotify.com/artist/6cXKWDi6xa3TJ0kB3Fdzjw?si=FgsSx8UXSpmQwGwDvvVH4g__;!!Lf_9VycLqA!1CXXR-FmypBPwdWQWQ1u2vJUVeee9QqU-V0klKY8aT8iW1JDOk-chf05NvRqPp3sIqo$ Apple https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://music.apple.com/us/artist/donoma/428096148__;!!Lf_9VycLqA!wAdS-2J1q9nSVNTcfHz8QLpaLQoSGHrxTH6pC-KzgjmhYL5x3ICyHo5Mlmxn9bLKcHQ$ Tidal Donoma YouTube https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://youtube.com/user/donomatribe__;!!Lf_9VycLqA!2y9OdfXDOqN8Br9Ol5fgKCLme1nu0SRWvh0DAfWJJhwriXesp61zdrJIf4B6-amv5E4$ .www.donomatribe.com

After yet another long, fun, and exhausting summer of entertainment in Milwaukee, fall has come. Historically, autumn's arrival has been a time in which things slow down in the city, as residents retreat inside and prepare from another harsh and uneventful winter. However, recent years have brought an uptick in post-summer events, including new festivals like Beet Street, Abby Jeanne's Cosmic Weekend, and Fuel Cafe's Doomsday event. That's not even counting the countless concerts, comedy shows, film screenings, and random one-off events taking place between now and late December. To help find the best, weirdest, and most interesting events taking place in Milwaukee this fall, host Tyler Maas enlisted the expertise of Milwaukee Magazine and Shepherd Express music writer Kevin Mueller. From his dining room, Mueller and Maas ran through some standout shows, talked about the handful of autumn festivals happening in the city, weighed the appeal of Napoleon Dynamite and Jake "The Snake" Roberts live shows, and talked about the odd pairing of punk rock and craft beer at Burnhearts' annual Punk House Kegger. This episode is brought to you by Surly Brewing, a Minnesota-based brewery and the official beer of On The Record. Join Surly at Somerset Amphitheater for the brewery's annual Darkness Day on Saturday, September 29. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Piles ("Blue Glue") and Slow Walker ("Ride").

After trudging through yet another long, unforgiving, and somewhat boring Wisconsin winter, spring has arrived. Along with the increased sunlight and climbing temperatures, a wealth of great shows are headed Milwaukee's way this season. Between the end of March and mid-June, the city's entertainment calendar is brimming with a mess of local release shows, comedians, touring musicians, and the first festivals of the year. To help find the best, weirdest, and most interesting events taking place in Milwaukee this spring, host Tyler Maas enlisted the expertise of Milwaukee Magazine and Shepherd Express music writer Kevin Mueller. From his dining room, Mueller (a proud new papa) and Maas ran through some standout shows, talked about the increase in spring festivals in the city, pondered why popular bands are playing in small venues these days, and debated how to correctly pronounce Ty Segall's name. This episode is brought to you by Surly Brewing, a Minnesota-based brewery and the official beer of On The Record. Try Surly’s new reduced-gluten Hopshifter IPA now. The product of a haunted jukebox and golden heart degenerates. Nothing beats writing the narrative for the cosmic radio and thriving off of the lust for life. Dreams, schemes and traveling the world. It’s Rock N’ Roll for the dreamers soul. Every note feels like a sanctified connection echoing into the chambers of heartache and infinite love. Music is my language and with this tool, I hope to heal and translate the traumas of our lives. -Abby Jeanne “Milwaukee wailer Abby Jeanne has a robust, jazzy voice that rivals the greats—Ella, Amy, even Janis. Her music plays like a talent reel, shuffling through bluesy torch songs, moody trip-hop experiments, and unhinged rockers, the constant thread being Jeanne’s go-for-broke determination and her refusal to let the world wear her down. What an absolute thrill it is hearing a singer this powerful just cut loose, free of any genre restraints.”- Shepherd Express, best albums 2017 Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, January 16th to listen to Abby Jeanne play her latest singles and chats about her upcoming residency in Milwaukee for the month of February; WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. Strangelander is: Steve Peplin, David Wake, Amanda Huff, Aaron Gardner, Jeremy Kuzniar, Michael Ritter and Patrick Reinholz; a collective of likeminded musicians who create jazz with warm humanity, connecting sound + mind together. “Jazz guitarist Steve Peplin rounded up [this] cast of elite Milwaukee talent for his latest project, Strangelander, a band including De La Buena mainstay Dave Wake, saxophonist Aaron Gardner and singer Amanda Huff. Given their collective experience, the septet covers about as much ground as you’d expect on their self-titled debut album, slithering back and forth between gypsy jazz, classical music and exotica on a set that’s as gorgeous as it is impossible to pigeonhole.” ~The Shepherd Express
Host Tyler Maas was joined by Kevin Mueller, a local freelance entertainment writer (and our resident "eating while driving" columnist) who contributes to Milwaukee Magazine and Shepherd Express. Both were audibly depleted from the craziness of recent weeks, but they still managed to look ahead and round up a wealth of events to help your summer end on a fun note. Tyler even mentions a super secret Milwaukee Record film screening that hasn't been announced yet.
WMSE 91.7FM is excited to welcome B-Free to our monthly Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s series on Tuesday, November 1st. Join us by listening over the airwaves or by participating as an audience member – this event is FREE and open to the 21+ public and lots of fun! B~Free will be joined by Milwaukee’s Foreign Goods as her backing band. The members of the multi-genre collective cite this as one of their last public performances of the year. When first introduced to the soulful & artistic sound of singer-songwriter-producer-musician B~Free, it is but a mere taste of all the capabilities this young lady embodies. Following a lengthy hiatus, B~Free reemerges with her sophomore project, the “Ode 2 A Luv Affair” LP. With sound inspirations from Musiq Soulchild, Dwele, J-Dilla and Jill Scott., it is a conceptual album that traverses the ups and downs of romantic relationships. vulnerability, passion and compromise. Production for the album began in 2013 but was interrupted by a lengthy vocal trauma that would leave the artist unable to speak or sing for months. Following a vocal cord surgery & traumatic year of recovery, B~Free became more dedicated than ever to share her musical gifts. Hailed by The Shepherd Express as an “immaculately constructed R&B record,” with a style rooted in 90s R&B/neo Soul and traces of present day influences, “Ode” not only represents the many trials and turmoils of love, but the personification of an artist’s loss and reclaiming of her gift. As always, WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach (and YOU), will lead B~Free and Foreign Goods through questions in between the live performance. Doors are at 5:30pm, segment starts at 6pm and runs until 7pm. Club Garibaldi’s is located at 2501 S. Superior Street in Bay View.
“NO/NO are among a handful of Milwaukee bands making music that’s unabashedly sexy, something the city’s scene had rarely even attempted in the past. Sound and Light is every bit as personable and infectious as the EPs that preceded it. And like those efforts, it’s savvy enough to leave you wanting more.” ~ The Shepherd Express
To help find the best, weirdest, and most interesting events taking place in Milwaukee this spring, host Tyler Maas enlisted the expertise of two of the city's premiere entertainment writers. Milwaukee Magazine and Shepherd Express music writer Kevin Mueller and WMSE radio personality (and occasional Milwaukee Record contributor) Cal Roach joined Maas to discuss the shows they're most excited to see. From Janet Jackson's Bradley Center gig to Bubba Sparxxx's upcoming show at Cudahy's City Lounge, the trio covers a wide range of spring shows...most of which are somehow connected to Andy Kindler.
“As fate would have it, the same ’80s funk influences that have inspired [Kid] Millions and [Sage] Schwarm for years are in vogue right now, manifesting themselves not only in the disco revival of acts like Chromeo, but also in the updated West Coast club sounds of DJ Mustard. Even this summer’s big pop hit, Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” played with the same retro electro-hop influences. “Millions and Schwarm aren’t naïve enough to think they could have anywhere near the kind of reach of those acts—even at its most conventional, …….Again is far weirder than anything currently getting commercial radio play—…“There’s a little bit of everything on the new record, from indie-rock guitars to R&B to even some 1940s Lennon Sisters-style vocals,” Schwarm says. “None of those sounds are samples; they’re all our own recordings. It’s a little all over the place, but it also has a thread, sort of a psychedelic-funk thread that runs through the whole album.”” ~ The Shepherd Express

Herself When She's Missing (Soft Skull Press) "Herself When She's Missing explores the irrationality of sex with uncommon wit and fearlessness. I can never resist the story of a bad romance and this one grabbed me by the collar and dragged me through a love-sick mind's tilted, temporally disordered terrain. Don't forget to drink a glass of water and eat a protein bar before reading. This book might leave you faint." --Sara Levine, author of Treasure Island!!! "Sarah Terez Rosenblum's Herself When She's Missing marks the emergence of a riveting and beautifully strange new voice in American fiction. And Andrea and The Criminal Mastermind are unforgettable characters. I especially love Andrea because she jogs in cemeteries. The book made me feel more alive, I can't ask for much more from any novel." --Peter Orner, author of Love and Shame and Love Sarah Terez Rosenblum is a writer whose work has been featured in Pop Matters, The Chicago Sun Times and The Shepherd Express. When not writing, Sarah supports herself as a figure model, spinning instructor, and creative writing teacher at Chicago's Story Studio. THIS EVENT WAS RECORDED LIVE AT SKYLIGHT BOOKS JUNE 20, 2012.
