Kid, from Kid 'n Play, has been in the game for a long time. We're not the first to ask about his famous hightop fade or the kickstep. The difference is that when he comes to People's Party with Talib Kweli, those convos are set in a new context.  In this riveting convo, Kid speaks freely about growing up biracial with racist relatives, being looked at as less Black because of the music he made, pressure to keep his iconic hightop fade, and so much more. It's a truly insightful conversation with a rap lion. A deep dive into one of the godfathers of the whole damn game.

!!!Trigger Warning!!! This episode contains coarse language and thoughts/opinions that may be objectionable or upsetting to some listeners. 3:33(a.m.) Studios does not endorse or support the claims of our guests, but we do absolutely respect them. This episode contains subject matter that can be construed as heretical or objectionable to those of the Christian Faith. Discretion advised.   Tonight on the Book, we have Mr. Joseph Ross, an Insurance Claims Adjuster and Hockey Player. I first encountered Joseph while perusing Talib Kweli's Instagram page. he had made some bold claims that instantly grabbed my attention.  Long story short, Joseph asserts that he is the living embodiment of Joseph Heathen Christ, who we all know as Jesus. It is his understanding that we are all reliving the time of the New Testament, that we all are in our second life on Earth (minimum), that the key players in the Passion are all present, and some of them hold positions of power in the Vatican.   This episode is not meant to either exploit or edify Joseph. The intent here is to make connections with interesting and unique individuals. I do this through artists, musicians, and in this case, people who would otherwise not have an avenue to connect with a larger audience.

On this episode of the show, all three marauders are back to open the show about the sad news of frapper Young Dolph being shot and killed at a bakery in his hometown of Memphis, TN for a charity drive to give back to his hometown. The marauders pay their respects, give their favorite songs and give their takes on the entire situation that took place (November 17). We go from one tragedy to the next with Travis Scott's Astroworld Festival becoming one of the most deadliest music concerts in history with (as of this recording) 10 deaths due to crowd surging, a person injecting concertgoers with a needle, fans pleading Travis to stop the show and a lot more drama. With lawsuits mounting and refunds being handed out we discuss who is the blame of the deaths with some of our answers may surprising some of our listeners. Next up, we get into some entertainment as the marauders talk about Kanye West's Drink Champs part 2 video that made its round on YouTube. During the interview, West took shots at (now former?) collaborator Talib Kweli by saying that he don't f--- with his raps. We wonder if the interview will mean it'll be the last time the two will work with each other. After that, DaBaby & DaniLeigh bring their personal problems to Instagram Live late Sunday (November 14) and early Monday morning (November 15) with cops being called and later resulting in DaniLeigh being arrested for assault. The marauders talk about if they can work things out for their 3 month old daughter. All that, plus One Gotta Go, album recommendations and a lot more! Some of the rumors of illicit activity mixed with some of the imagery from that fatal night only begs lots of questions. In any event, general population concerts are a tough sell at this big age.  Next, the fellas discuss the Ye interview on drinkchamps.  Was it top 5 greatest interviews? Why he violate so many people including Big Sean, Talib Kweli, and John Legend? Tap in to hear our thoughts. This interview session was supposed to drop last week, in conjunction with Bonds' and Breeze's incredible documentary “WHERE WE'RE FROM: RISE OF L.A. UNDERGROUND HIP-HOP” that released worldwide on Aug 24. Let's just say a few technical difficulties in prepping the episode and Doe's challenging personal schedule is the ‘cause for the delay - all excuses aside, it's finally here. If you didn't know, Bonds and Breeze built CLUB ELEMENTS, one of the most powerful underground nights in West Coast hip-hop history during the late 90s and early aughts, and this documentary shines a much needed light on its impact then and now. The stories are endless - DE LA SOUL and TALIB KWELI showing up to Elements unannounced after a Spitkicker show in LA, ATCQ's PHIFE DAWG judging emcee battles and every single seminal West Coast hip-hop group passing through it's doors at one time or another - FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP, JURASSIC 5, PLANET ASIA, SOULS OF MISCHIEF, THE BEAT JUNKIES and DILATED PEOPLES to name a few. This is rap history at it's finest folks, so go ahead and check the interview now, cop the documentary while you're listening, and snuggle up with your significant other tonight for a good underground hip-hop flick, ‘cause it's undoubtedly that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live August 22, 2021 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks

Episode 28: In Case You Missed It, UC Medical Center Physician Dr. Madison Cuffy joins us to discuss Living Kidney Donations

This Thing Called Life

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2021 51:22

During this episode of This Thing Called Life podcast, host Andi Johnson speaks with Dr. Madison Cuffy, an Associate Professor of Surgery and the Kidney Director at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Cuffy has built trust-filled relationships with his patients throughout the years and loves nothing more than to see them live their lives to the fullest after getting their transplant. In case you missed it, tune in now!   Episode Highlights:  Dr. Cuffy started his medical journey back in 2002 during his residency, before doing a transplant fellowship at New York Presbyterian. Growing up in Brooklyn, Dr. Cuffy was first introduced to Cincinnati by Talib Kweli and Hi Tek. As a 14-year-old, Dr. Cuffy was volunteering in a hospital cleaning instruments. Even to this day, no one in Dr. Cuffy's family has experience in medicine, nor any clue what a transplant surgeon does. Dr. Cuffy was born in the Caribbean and grew up with his great aunt in New York. One of the most common misconceptions surrounding organ donation is that the medical community will let you die. After being in transplant and seeing how one can help create life during a time of despair, Dr. Cuffy became an organ donor. The medical community is not out to harm organ donors for their organs, contrary to popular belief. COVID has disproportionately impacted the African American community, leading to a rise in a renewed mistrust of the medical community. It's who passes on the information about medical issues like COVID that is important. Despite all the concerns and misinformation that has been passed along, Dr. Cuffy highly recommends getting the COVID vaccination. According to the statistics, on average, 22 people die every day waiting on an organ transplant. While most of his focus is on kidney transplants, Dr. Cuffy does work with all transplant organs. There is an access problem for people who need a kidney transplant and are on dialysis. Over the span of a year, Dr. Cuffy performs around 70 kidney transplants. During the pandemic in 2020, the transplant team was able to get recipients in and out with anyone contracting COVID. Dr. Cuffy facilitates living kidney donation as the best option to treat end-stage renal disease. Andi has noticed that people of color tend to shy away from sharing their donation needs with other people. Socioeconomic issues and disadvantages can make it more difficult for certain patients to share their stories. People who don't want to share their stories need a donor champion to do it for them. There are different forms of literacy, so Dr. Cuffy makes sure his patients know that there is no stupid question. It's important for patients to speak up about their questions to their doctor so that they don't go get misinformation from another source. If your physician is too busy to answer your questions now or in the future, you may need to find a different provider. Dr. Cuffy feels rewarded by his job when he sees his patients experiencing life after their transplant. His grandmother's advice to be who he is, even when things get tough, gets Dr. Cuffy through his hard days. Raised without his parents in Brooklyn, Dr. Cuffy knows first hand that you can do anything you set your mind to. Dr. Cuffy has always had an extra gear that has allowed him to outwork everyone around him. When he goes back to Brooklyn now, Dr. Cuffy gets a different kind of respect from the people he grew up with. Dr. Cuffy thoroughly enjoys going to J. Alexanders in Cincinnati because of the sheer amount of professional African Americans that go there. 3 Key Points: While volunteering at a hospital with the hopes of staying off the streets as a 15-year-old boy, Dr. Cuffy had the opportunity to watch a kidney transplant up close, and that's how he chose the transplant route. Unlike in other cities that have multiple transplant programs with different surgeons, Cincinnati has a single transplant program where the doctors act as one unit. Living donor kidneys last anywhere from 15 to 20 years, recipients don't have to wait on a list to get one, and the quality is usually very good. Jaleel White is not Steve Urkel. That's obvious. But it's hard to imagine a time in recent memory when a single character so dominated the career and conversation around a single actor. In this episode of People's Party with Talib Kweli, White wrestles with that legacy, explains the conversations and struggles behind the scenes on Family Matters, and talks about how he eventually charted a path forward after sitcom mega-fame -- including re-taking ownership of “Urkel” as a brand and launching a weed company called Purple Urkle.  The episode is, above all things, deeply personal and tremendously insightful. White and Kweli have been friends for years and they're able to explore topics with a high degree of trust shared between them. It's a powerful conversation and one that anyone with interest in how Steve Urkel shaped the man behind the snorts and high-waisted pants should certainly tune in for.

However, Colleen demonstrated a different model of introductions that we'd like to honor. Pay close attention to how she introduces herself with a focus on her personal history and heritage. For now, let us say that Colleen grew up splitting time between Shonto, Blue Gap, and Flagstaff, AZ. Currently, Colleen maintains her connection to the environment around her by advocating for the rights of the people and the natural world in this area. She has a powerful and important voice. Hey, you. Glad to have you here for Epi258 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, where I, Marc Hershon, am Mixin' Up a Mess O' Soundcasts this week. Details on what shows I'm featuring in a sec but first, did you miss last week's Epi 257, hosted by my alternating co-host Mr. Tyson Saner? He featured a triumphant trio of soundcast clips from Blake's Takes for God's Sakes, Good Game Nice Try, and Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. You can always grab that or any other previous installment of Succotash right on our homsight, at SuccotashShow.com. Or pretty much anywhere else you normally gobble up your soundcast treats: Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio…search for Succotash Show on the web and we're sure to pop up. As for what I've got in store for you this time around, I'm going a little differently that usual. I normally harvest four clips from various comedy soundcasts but I've got kind of a mixed bag special for you. A combo platter, if you will. There are some brand new shows and a smattering of things from a few years ago. We'll be hearing from Patton Oswalt and Meredith Salanger in the new Did You Get My Text?; a couple of comedy sketch commercials from Left-Handed Radio; May Contain Nuts, a BBC soundcast from Scotland; Stay F. Homekins, the pandemic-inspired show from Paul F. Tompkins, and a mini-clip from The Midnight Miracle by Dave Chapelle and assorted co-hosts. In addition, I'll be featuring a clip from the Jock Doc Podcast. Yes, I featured the JDP on my last installment, it's true. BUT this clip features yours truly appearing as a character on the most recent installment of Dr. London Smith's show and, gosh, I'd hate for you to miss a minute of me! Plus this episode is sponsored by Henderson's Pants new Down Under Pants, mate! Here's something I forget to mention a lot of these shows but if you're like to read what I have to say about comedy soundcasts and not just listen to me blather on, I am part of the squad that writes the this Week in Comedy Podcasts column over on Vulture.com each week. We each pick one and write about 200 words about it. That column drops every Thursday, usually, and this week I'm reviewing…well, that would be telling. Suffice it to say that I will be reviewing one of the shows that I am clipping in this very episode. In fact, it might be this first clip… CLIPS Did You Get My Text?…Which is from the first episode of a brand new soundcast. It's called Did You Get My Text? And features comedian Patton Oswalt and his wife, Meredith Salenger, who – according to the show blurb – live in the same house yet text each other more than people who live across the country from one another. Here, they sit down and go through their texts together. Our clip is about a photo Patton texted to Meredith which you might have seen. It got quite a bit of attention. It's a woman being interviewed on the news from her home and in the background, displayed prominently on a bookshelf, is the kind of object you normally wouldn't be showing off. The Jock Doc PodcastNext up is a clip from The Jock Doc Podcast. And yes, yes I know I JUST featured a clip from Dr. London Smith and Cameron week before last because they uploaded it to us. But THIS clip is different. It's special. It's got ME in it! But not just me, I'm playing a zany character with a bad French accent. I play Guy Niçoise, a “reclaimed food chef”. Which means he makes meals out of garbage, basically. Bon apetít! Left-Handed RadioA podcast crew that has been around even longer than your Succotash family is Left-Handed Radio. Started in 2010, a year before us, it is hosted by Anna Rubanova and Adam Bozarth. It's largely a collection of original comedy sketches and parodies, mostly of public radio shows and ads. Their publicist, Heidi Vanderlee, from Positive Jam PR, sent me a couple of their spots for Father's Day, which was just this past Sunday. Let's listen together… May Contain NutsFor this next clip we leave the States and head for Scotland. BBC Scotland, to be exact, and a TV show AND a soundcast called May Contain Nuts, to be exacter. This clip is from episode 6 of Series 3 that dropped a year ago this month. The show touts itself as being about “Four hosts, one subject, no script,” and features hosts Stuart Condy, Russell Miller, Chris Miller and Craig-James Moncur. This clip is from a show all about Stonehenge and these guys are pretty funny. I think. Their Scottish burrs are so thick I had to listen a couple or twelve times to get it all, so don't be afraid to hit that rewind button. Stay F. HomekinsWhat did soundcasting mainstay Paul f. Tompkins and his wife Janie Haddad Tompkins do during the COVID-19 lockdown? They produced a soundcast of course, called Stay F. Tompkins. And it's still going, although I'm not sure how much longer they'll be keeping it going – Paul's got to get back to visiting all those other soundcasts! In this clip, Paul starts to get into having been a guest on Larry King's show… The Midnight MiracleThe Midnight Miracle is a soundcast that came out of a summer camp that Dave Chapelle put on in Ohio. The show description calls it “a thought-provoking podcast that uniquely blends the salon and variety show traditions while providing a glimpse into the inner lives of hosts Talib Kweli, yasiin bey, Dave Chappelle, and friends.” It's available under Apple Podcasts' new paid subscription model which can frankly go fuck itself. So I couldn't get an ordinary clip from the show BUT they released this two minute blurp – that's a cross between a blip and a blurb – so here you go… You had enough? Me, too. Be sure to pop in next week for Tyson Saner and Episode 259's rasher of soundcast clippage. Remember to give a listen to me guesting on the Jock Doc Podcast. If you want advanced voting rights, I guess you'll have to find someplace more forward-thinking that the USA. And if anyone asks if you've heard anything good lately, feel free to pass that ol' devil Succotash! — Marc Hershon

We talk. I drink. We movie. About Warriors: A turf battle between New York City street gangs that rages from Coney Island to the Bronx. The Warriors are mistakenly fingered for the killing of a gang leader. Soon they have every gang in the city out to get revenge and they must make their way across the city to their own turf. About DJ Z Trip: Z-Trip is often referred to as a young Rick Rubin. His roots are based in Hip Hop, but he covers and loves all music styles. Considered by many as the godfather of mash-ups, his style of mixing and producing reaches way beyond that. Z-Trip received the award for America's Best DJ and still remains on the top 10 lists year after year. He has collaborated with some of the very best to ever do it: Nas, Bassnectar, Public Enemy, DJ Shadow, Rakim, Shepard Fairey, Talib Kweli and many others. Interview with Bhi Bhiman

We had the pleasure of interviewing Bhi Bhiman over Zoom audio! Singer-songwriter and guitarist Bhi Bhiman doesn't need much to ignite a fury of fascinating expressions; only the simplest of recording set-ups of guitar and vocal mics plugged into his laptop. Yet, even with such simplicity, he projects a towering voice that so urgently grabs your attention, you hang onto every word he sings. Bhiman's latest recording, Substitute Preacher 2, features a new set of mesmerizing acoustic covers in a series that follows his wildly popular 2013 EP (volume 1) of the same name. Fans will be treated to Bhiman's truly original takes on classic hits such as "My Best Friend's Girl" (The Cars), "Back In Black" (AC/DC), "Magic Carpet Ride" (Steppenwolf), "Paranoid" (Black Sabbath), and "My Way" (Frank Sinatra).Bhiman's foray into recording covers (Substitute Preacher 1) was such a hit that his rendition of "Walk of Life" by Dire Straits garnered several sync placements, including for an Apple Watch commercial starring Alice Cooper. The track further landed in a series of Xfinitycommercials. The same year Substitute Preacher 1 was released (2013), Bhiman took the stage at Carnegie Hall for a tribute show hosted by The Roots to commemorate Prince; other special guests included Elvis Costello, Talib Kweli, and Chris Rock.Substitute Preacher 2 revisits his passion for devouring songs written by artists he loves. For Bhiman, it's not simply playing the piece just as the original artists' would. He approaches covers as if it's a standalone new song that he personally wrote himself. Over the course of his career, Bhiman has developed a dedicated following after the release of four acclaimed studio albums. His 2019 album, Peace of Mind, launched as a podcast, with each episode revealing a new song, political theme, and a conversation with a lauded special guest, such as author Dave Eggers. Since its release, Bhiman has worked behind the scenes on diverse projects from acoustic versions of "Faith" by Galantis x Dolly Parton and "Unwell" by Steve Aoki x Kiiara featuring Rob Thomas. He has also worked with actor Keegan-Michael Key, rapper/director Boots Riley, and late iconic musician Chris Cornell. We want to hear from you!
