On this episode, Ann and Tarik interview Chef Alex Hanesakda of Sapsap about his upcoming event, "Rivers Run Deep," happening at Cactus Club at 3 p.m. this Saturday, April 12. The event commemorates five decades since Oceanian refugees arrived in the United States after the Vietnam War, focusing on the often-overlooked history of the war in Laos and the genocide in Cambodia.Chef Alex discusses the symbolism of the Mekong River in his family's escape from Laos, and highlights how breakdancing connected Southeast Asian immigrants with Black and Brown communities in Milwaukee. The conversation also touches on the hypocrisy of anti-immigrant sentiments alongside the popularity of immigrant food.Alex explains that Lao Oceanian cuisine at events like "Rivers Run Deep" aims to share the stories and struggles behind the food and preserve cultural memory. He also shares a few of the meaningful ingredients from the culture, like lemongrass and fish sauce. In addition to the chat with Chef Alex, Ann and Tarik also touch on budget-friendly Monday night bites in Milwaukee from Paloma Taco & Tequila, Lucky Joe's and The Vanguard.

For almost exactly one year, Discourse Coffee Workshop has been a roommate of sorts, serving out of the southwest corner of Radio Milwaukee HQ. It's been a pleasure watching them get comfortable in the space and expanding their presence in the city through other ventures like Agency, the hybrid cocktail bar they operate inside the Dubbel Dutch Hotel.Making it even more fun was the news that Discourse partners Ryan Castelaz and Sean Liu received earlier this week: that Agency is the lone Wisconsin finalist in this year's James Beard Foundation Awards. We start this episode talking about the honor, which keeps Agency in the running for Best New Bar along with Bar Colette (Dallas), Indentidad Cocktail Bar (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Merai (Brookline, Mass.) and ViceVersa (Miami). The category is making its debut this year, meaning the winner will be the first-ever recognized by the James Beard Foundation. We'll find out if the hometown boys take home one of those fancy medals June 16, when the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards are handed out at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. Fortunately, we have a few more items to tide us over as we wait for the ceremony:Ann delivered another batch of Dining Tidbits, including news of a combo farmer's market and grocery store in Brookfield.Cactus Club keeps finding ways to bring innovative events to the venue, the latest being “Rivers Run Deep,” which will feature food from SapSap.In another piece for Milwaukee Magazine, Ann took a trip down memory lane to pour one out for two closed restaurants that left a mark on the city. Finally, the reality-TV folks have nabbed another local chef, Screaming Tuna's Jason Morimoto to appear on season two of Morimoto's Sushi Master (no relation).

Andrew Rucklidge is an award-winning Canadian visual artist, whose paintings have shown all over the world, and can be found in collections from Toronto, to London, to Dharemshala, India. Andrew is also a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, who has played in several bands, including Farmer in the City (Martin Tielli), John Southworth, The New Romantic Portal, The Linoleum Falcon, Cactus Club, and—currently—Dopamine Dream.  He also records as a solo artist under the name Bobbe Ruck. This conversation delves into the nuanced and wondrous overlap between the worlds of music and art: creating layered and textured sounds with a "painterly" approach, or conjuring fantastical abstracts inspired by albums played on repeat. You'll also learn the definition of "Gnome Rock", why an "eggy bridge" breaks the rules, and how making your own paint from scratch is like working with a Moog synthesizer.  Learn more about Andrew at andrewrucklidge.com Stream or download Bobbe Ruck: https://ffm.to/bobberuck Get a dose of Dopamine Dream at dopaminedreamband.com THE MUSIC BUDDY SESSION:"Too Little To Lose", by Andrew RucklidgePerformed by Andrew Rucklidge, Tim Vesely, and Jane GowanRecorded by Tim Vesely and Jane Gowan; Mixed by Tim VeselyMusic samples in this episode:"All County Holdings" - Bobbe Ruck (All County Holdings, 2020)"Unknown" - Dopamine Dream (Unknown, 2023)"Banner G" -  Bobbe Ruck (All County Holdings, 2020)"Astro Jet" -  Bobbe Ruck (All County Holdings, 2020)"Someone's Looking At You" - The Boomtown Rats (The Fine Art of Surfacing, 1979)"Message to a Friend" -  Bobbe Ruck (All County Holdings, 2020)Support the showA Morning Run Productions ProjectMusic Buddy is nomated for a 2023 Canadian Podcast Award for "Outstanding Music Series", and "Outstanding Main Title Theme Music for a Series". Learn more here; https://bit.ly/3TSFYY4   Campfire Conversation:  Eric and Ana welcome both Josh Ostermann and Jared Schutz into The Cabin to discuss some favorite dive bars in southeastern Wisconsin. They discuss and define dive bars again – as they did in the first edition in this series – and then proceed to cover a number of bars that fit that definition in the state's SE corner. Jared discusses dive bars in the Pleasant Prairie and the Kenosha area where the mix of Cubs fans versus Brewers fans is a little higher before moving on to other parts of the region. Eric dives deeply into Cudahy and West Allis, where the concentration of “dive bars” is higher in part due to the longtime existence of factories that ran 24 hours and catered to multiple shifts of workers. Ana and Josh add a mixture of dive bars and breweries that have risen from traditional dive bars. Is this an exhaustive list? Not by any means – there are a TON of them in the area! But check out this discussion and feel free to message us with your favorites. In the early 2000s, Jamie Stewart wanted to go to Vietnam. They brought a rubber baby doll with them to take photos while they were there. One of those photos became the cover for Xiu Xiu's excellent A Promise album. But, for this trip to happen in the first place, Jamie needed to raise some money. For 8 months before they left, they recorded as many punk and ska bands as they could (One of the bands was Short Round). This isn't the only time that Jamie has intersected with ska. Another band they recorded, Firme, lent them their horn section for the Knife Play record. One of their old 90s bands, IBOPA (Indestructible Beat Of Palo Alto), played with a lot of ska bands since they were a fun horn-driven band (Ska was an influence, but not a style they played). Another one of their bands, Ten In The Swear Jar, released a record on Asian Man Records, and Pitchfork made a point to talk about ska in the review, despite there being NO ska on the album. We talk about all of this with Jamie, and so much more. We discuss the time period when they worked at Streetlight Records, how they discovered ska and reggae on KPFK on Sundays, how their 2nd concert ever was Pato Banton and Tippa Irie, and how they briefly played bass in a dub band. They also tell us about the time GG Allin jumped on stage and demanded they "plays some blues." They tell us stories about The Cactus Club. They tell us why Deerhoof is an amazing band. We learn who Richard Snakedick is.  We discuss what it was like to perform a balloon solo as the opening act on AJJ's 2021 tour, and we find out why they once blurted out "Fred Flintstone's Lucius Dick." Plus, Jamie sings for us a Weird Al-style parody song they wrote when they were a teenager. This week's guest is River (a.k.a. Sarah) Shook. As the bandleader and namesake of Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Shook has ardently toured throughout the U.S. and Europe. They've released some excellent albums, including Nightroamer, which came out on Thirty Tigers in February. Following the release of that acclaimed album and ample touring in support of the record, Shook's "dark pop" project called Mightmare just put out its debut album on Kill Rock Stars last week. Before Shook and company hit the road for the first Mightmare tour (including an Oct. 29 show at Cactus Club), they spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about hitting the road in a big way again, releasing two drastically different albums on two respected labels in the same calendar year and how their recent run of European shows went. Naturally, the conversation also moved to Shook's musical history. Over the course of the discussion, Shook talked about growing up in a religious household and only being allowed to listen to worship and classical music, teaching themself to play guitar on an acoustic borrowed from a friend, the origin of early projects that eventually morphed into The Disarmers, and some of their favorite experiences from their career. He's performed with Wilco, Sleater-Kinney, Black Midi, Jeff Rosenstock and Speedy Ortiz. He has garnered acclaim from Kasey Musgraves and he was named "Chicagoan of the Year" by the Chicago Tribune. Before he was an accomplished artist on the cusp of even bigger and better things, NNAMDÏ was living in the Chicago suburb of Lansing, drumming in rock bands and teaching himself to record by writing songs about butts for his friends. Recently, just prior to the release of Please Have a Seat and the upcoming U.S. tour (including an Oct. 20 show at Cactus Club), NNAMDÏ spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about making the new album, getting back on the road again, as well as some of the hopes and plans he has for the near future. Along the way, he also talked about playing drums in his middle school's jazz band, starting a group called The Para-Medics, playing basement shows and comic book shops in high school, dabbling in self-recording and rapping, and how lighthearted material about booties and inside jokes inadvertently paved the way to a successful solo career. While he's no longer a member of that indie-folk outfit, Johnson is an accomplished solo artist in his own right, and he's poised to bring his music into exciting new territory. With a follow-up to his excellent solo debut, Every Feeling On A Loop, due out on ANTI- Records sometime next year, Johnson has released a few new singles in recent months and he's gearing up to hit the road to treat audiences around the Midwest and East Coast to live renditions of songs from his ever-growing, ever-evolving catalog. This week's guest is Chris Rosenau, whose impressive and inventive guitar work you might recognize from accomplished projects like Pele, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Volcano Choir. Before he was playing to audiences all over the world, collaborating with Justin Vernon and members of The Promise Ring, and releasing influential albums that have stood the test of time, Rosenau was a kid teaching himself Metallica songs in his suburban Milwaukee home. Prior to next weekend's Seventh Stanine Festival at Cactus Club, Rosenau spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about new CoCoBees developments, his upcoming release with Nick Sanborn and other modern day happenings. Eventually, the conversation found Rosenau discussing early projects like Orion Black and 21 Guns, playing club concerts with Smashing Pumpkins, starting a band with Jon Mueller (and then another), and some of the most memorable experiences from his decades of playing music. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. Celebrating Imagine MKE's Public Ally Sindie Ho

Imagine This Podcast

This week's episode finds Lindsay and Elisabeth holding down the banter fort after David (not so mysteriously) disappeared. The guest this week is Imagine MKE's Public Ally Sindie Ho, who is wrapping up his time with Imagine this month. Lindsay and Elisabeth reflect on Sindie's storytelling power, thoughtfulness, unbridled passion for seafood buffets, and comfort standing up for people and attracting the trust and vulnerability of others. Elisabeth and Lindsay speculate on Sindie's future career, and what a hypothetical Sindie Ho tour of Milwaukee would entail. Starting around 9:15, Sindie joins the crew to reflect on his time in Milwaukee and at Imagine MKE.  Sindie Ho is a multidisciplinary artist from Rockford, Illinois who graduated from MIAD in 2020. During his service as a Public Ally, Sindie has contributed invaluably to Imagine's culture, and has supported everything from Neighborhood convenings and contributing to Imagine This Blog, to demonstrating the best kite flying technique.   To kick off the interview, Sindie reflects on his recent art performance installation project—a “secret exchange” that took place at Bay View Gallery Night at Voyager Books. Sindie graduated from college during the pandemic, and had to negotiate carving out community and an artistic trajectory through this time of dramatic isolation. Despite the limitations of COVID, over the years, Sindie has expanded his network, his idea of Milwaukee, and perception of the art world. Sindie reflects on the profound experience of being embraced and cared for by Milwaukee communities. He shares gratitude for many of the ways in which Milwaukeeans share and connect resources, and look out for one another. In his experience, he's been rewarded for exploring and expanding his horizons and connecting to others from different walks of life.   Through his explorations and his time in his first professional non-profit role at Imagine, Sindie has grown confidence and a feeling of agency and ability to step beyond his comfort zone, and contribute to the arts ecosystem in Milwaukee. From here, he imagines a life in Bay View, where he can dig into cultivating a vernacular artist environment, possibly as a contemporary incarnation of the spirit of Mary Nohl. As arts leader of Milwaukee, he questions how groups who are not officially non-profits might be better resourced in the future.   The episodes ends with reflections about Sindie's strengths, and a dramatic reading of an “exquisite corpse” poem that the Imagine team crafted for Sindie.   Follow Sindie on Instagram @https://www.instagram.com/puppie.party/?hl=en (puppie.party)  https://milwaukeepublicmarket.org/ (Milwaukee Pubic Market)   https://www.xankiawi.com/ (Xankia)   https://www.miad.edu/ (MIAD)  https://www.saic.edu/ (School of the Art Institute of Chicago)  https://publicallies.org/join-us/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwn4qWBhCvARIsAFNAMigWfri0BIwWMeBvcWKPbXTZKIpGIlK6mLfKqJ85eIpOf5TDZDtX7MIaAknCEALw_wcB (Public Allies)  https://www.voyageurbookshop.com/ (Voyageur Book Shop)  http://www.laprosette.com/ (Anja Notanja Sieger)   http://www.bayviewbash.org/ (Bay View Bash)  https://www.cactusclubmilwaukee.com/ (Cactus Club)  https://milwaukeemakerspace.org/ (Milwaukee Makerspace)  https://county.milwaukee.gov/files/county/parks-department/Park-Maps/southshore.pdf (South Shore Park)   https://www.jmkac.org/artist/mary-nohl/ (Mary Nohl)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgVKvqTItto (School of Rock Bill to Law)  https://www.facebook.com/butterflycollectivemke/ (Butterfly Collective)

Modern Magic and Mentalism: Deceptions Milwaukee

In this episode of the podcast, the crew has “magic on the mind,” and Elisabeth, Lindsay, and David dig into magic in a variety of forms. Their banter covers a range of topics including recent magical performances in Milwaukee, the magic of physics and great guacamole, the hypothetical burden of reading minds, the possible UFO hotspot where Elisabeth was raised, and David's freaky premonition.    Luka joins the crew for an interview beginning around 18:30. He starts the conversation off by talking about how he got into magic. Leaning into a childhood summer tradition of going to the library, he took to reading books on magic tricks. After college, Luka worked as a video editor and a banker. Then, in his mid-twenties, he decided to take a risk and jump into working in magic full-time. After building up a small repertoire of gigs and making connections, Luka joined a group magic show in Branson, Missouri. Upon returning to Milwaukee several years later, he became a resident performer at the Safe House and developed his show “Deceptions,” which he launched in 2021.    In the conversation, Luka reflects on how he brands himself as a “deception artist” rather than a magician for kids. He also highlights the ways in which magic is an art form— as long as the magician portrays and conducts themselves as an artist. Luka compares the art of magic to the art of making and performing music. It involves writing, workshopping, acting, comedy, and more. But according to Luka, there is no direct path to get into magic—rather, “magic finds you.”   Lastly, as the “magician of arts and culture” Luka amazes David by, almost verbatim, invoking the same imaginary policy as the poet laureate and previous ITP guest Dasha Kelly Hamilton.   You can find info about Luka's shows at https://www.deceptionsmke.com/ (Deceptions) and https://www.safe-house.com/ (SafeHouse)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_Lux (Son Lux)  https://a24films.com/films/everything-everywhere-all-at-once (Everything Everywhere All at Once)  https://rafiqbhatia.com/ (Rafiq Bhatia)   https://www.cactusclubmilwaukee.com/ (Cactus Club)  https://www.bayviewneighborhood.org/chill-on-the-hill (Chill on the Hill)   https://tosatonight.com/ (Tosa Tonight)  https://www.themcouleeboys.com/ (Them Coulee Boys)  https://www.mso.org/ (Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra)  https://www.sailingcenter.org/ (Milwaukee Community Sailing Center)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqwb4HIrORM (The “Magic” or Physics of Sailing)  https://www.amazon.com/Encounter-Buff-Ledge-Case-History/dp/0929343603 (Encounter at Buff Ledge)  https://tinyrituals.co/blogs/tiny-rituals/obsidian-meaning-healing-properties-everyday-uses (Black Obsidian)  https://www.hulu.com/movie/derek-delgaudios-in-of-itself-19b9d405-40b2-483e-8e1f-e25fe10c7299 (In & Of Itself)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Houdini (Harry Houdini)  https://davidblaine.com/ (David Blaine)  https://www.davidcopperfield.com/html/ (David Copperfield)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Val_Valentino (The Masked Magician)   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Poets_Society (Dead Poets Society)

As Chef Chuck Currie says, menu structure drives sales and profits…no if's, and's, or but's about it!Unfortunately, many F&B operators at clubs beat their head against the walls of labour cost and inventory control, simply because they do not know how to structure their menu. That being said, we must understand that when it comes to F&B we are in the sales business first, and then immediately after that we are in the inventory control and people training business.  Remember, a good menu structure drives the sales, controls the inventory SKU's, and reduces the number of people you need to train, along with the difficulty of the tasks that your team members are required to complete. This episode of the GIG Podcast is all about reviewing the basics of menu rejuvenation and it's for you if you're interested in learning how to:Increase your average checkRealize an immediate sales increaseAchieve an increase in marginLower your labour costsLower the amount of food inventory items you carryLower the dollar value of the inventory level you carryHighlights from this episode of the GIG Podcast that you don't want to miss:- 7:25 – Hear about what Chuck views as the area of greatest need that F&B operators have when it comes to getting help with improving the performance of their F&B business.- 11:40 – Find out what some of the things are that an operator can consider when trying to find ways to improve the efficiency and profitability of their golf club F&B operation.- 13:08 – Hear about how Chuck gets “buy-in” from the team members at the facilities he audits when he presents the solutions that they need to adopt to improve and achieve superior results.- 17:05 – Understand the importance of getting the menu structure right and why actual dollars to the bottom line are way more important than the food cost percentage that you might be achieving.- 21:45 – Find out how to create an environment within your F&B operation where your team can become accepting of change and be open to a new way of approaching how the kitchen is going to be operated.- 23:59 – Learn about the areas of the business that Chuck is most frequently called in to provide help with for his clients.- 29:15 – Uncover the most important numbers and metrics to watch out for to improve the efficiency & profitability of your F&B operation. About Chuck Currie Chuck's specialty is making money for his clients!  Concept positioning, strategic growth, menu analysis, kitchen design, recipe development, purchasing rationalization, training programs, and productivity analysis have increased sales and profits for every client. They include Kraft Foods, Save-On-Foods, Tractor Every Day Healthy Foods, Good Bowl, 7-Eleven, Freybe Meats, Centennial Foodservice, Intercity Packers, Gourmet Chef, Cactus Club, Joeys, White Spot, Novo Neapolitan Pizzeria, the Canadian Produce Marketing Association, Garland Commercial Ranges, Vanderpols Eggs, and Mahony & Sons. You'd be hard-pressed to find a musician as prolific and enigmatic as Steve Gunn. The New-York-based singer, songwriter and guitarist has managed more than 20 releases in the past 15 years, including collaborations with Kurt Vile, Hiss Golden Messenger, Ryley Walker and more. Each new album, EP and split finds Gunn venturing into new and unfamiliar territory and demonstrating his continued growth and evolution as an artist. His latest, Other You — which came out on Matador Records this past summer — is no exception, with an uncharacteristically bright sound and an aura of optimism that's present in the album's 11 tracks. Before setting out on a co-headlining tour with Jeff Parker (which includes a Dec. 4 stop at Cactus Club in Milwaukee), Gunn spent some time telling My First Band host Tyler Maas about the process of making Other You, his excitement to be back on the road and playing solo shows, and what's in store for him next year. Along the way, Gunn spoke about growing up a few miles outside of Philadelphia, the role nearby college radio stations and independent record stores had on his musical taste, and spending his teens and 20s exploring New York and other East Coast hubs in search of new and unfamiliar live music experiences. Before episode's end, Gunn also talked about taking guitar lessons, playing in a project called GHQ and briefly being part of Vile's backing band, The Violators. Epiphone now produces a signature model guitar that bears her name, and she's about to take that guitar on the road again when she embarks on a Midwestern tour next month before what's sure to be a busy and bountiful 2022. Long before Wolfe was collaborating with Queens of the Stone Age members and sharing the stage with the likes of Joan Jett and Heart, she was playing acoustic brunch sets at restaurants and trying to make a name for herself in the Texas capital. Prior to hitting the road again (including a Dec. 9 headlining show at Cactus Club in Milwaukee), Wolfe spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about what it's been like getting back on the road again, the process of recording the new album with Michael Shuman and highlights from her already impressive and still-blossoming career. Over the course of the conversation, Wolfe talked about being drawn to guitar at the age of 5, immersing herself in songwriting in her teens, diving headfirst into Austin's music scene during her college years and some of the formative experiences and opportunities that — combined with her years of hard work and natural talent — helped her become the artist she is today.
