If we told you a member of the Jackson family produced an album in the 1980s that produced eight singles and multiple top 5 hits, you would likely assume it was Michael. However, younger sister Janet's "Rhythm Nation 1814" was a behemoth of a hit-maker, with dance-able hits like "Escapade," "Black Cat," "Miss You Much" and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)." The album itself was a concept album meant to address loftier themes. But the videos were peak MTV-era goodness. You couldn't escape Janet. But why would you want to?

I helped kickoff the start of this year's FunDrive. Played a slightly altered version of Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" and "Ruby" by Silver Apples. Support CiTR if you can: citr.ca/donate! In addition to the station's great incentives, I'm offering:- At the $30 level, a Duncan's Donuts 60min Workout Mix. Because if you're going to make it through a dozen dozens, you need stamina and perseverence, and that means trying. This all makes logical sense, trust me.- At the 101.9fm level, a Dunkerchief. A handmade hankerchief, specifically designed to dust the donut crumbs from the corners of your mouth. Some might say this whole donut thing is played out. To which I say, maybe? These things are still great, though. That's...undeniable.

We are a part of a MASTAS Nation! By which we mean we're ranking every song on Janet Jackson's classic album "Rhythm Nation 1814." Along the way, Sarah startles herself by loving a slow jam, Mark chair-dances so hard he almost hurts himself,  and we both have some strong advice for pop stars who make political statements. Plus, we welcome our first-ever return customer for a pop chart astrology reading!     Our theme is by Andrew Byrne, and our outro is by Janet Jackson. This episode was recorded at King Killer Studios in Brooklyn. Want to request a song, buy a birthday chart reading, or just say hello? The Al-Bums are back to dive bum first into another bombastic album by one of the Queens of the Pod - it's Janet "Baby" Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (released in the year, 1989, not 1814, we know it's very confusing lol!)  The classic line-up of Bums (Danny, Branny & Dave) break down the LP song by song, interlude by interlude, & music vid by music vid, take a loose tally of who ripped off who more, Janet or Michael Jackson, & announce which true 90s albums they will cover for the next VOLUME of Al-Bums.  [EDIT!]

This episode is the edited version of our special live launch party we held on Nov. 11 in Los Angeles, as part of the Voyager Institute. We were joined by Grammy-nominated soul artist B.Slade, a self-described "Rhythm Nation-pedia" who, indeed, brought incredible insight and knowledge to our discussion of this seminal Jackson LP. How many people can name every single dancer in Janet's "Miss You Much" video? Exactly. It was a delightful conversation and having the live audience was great. It was our first time taping in front of an audience but hopefully won't be our last. Thanks to all those who came out and to those who couldn't, we're happy you finally get to listen to this.   More on Janet Jackson and Rhythm Nation 1814: Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' track-by-track breakdown of the album in Billboard. After several technical hiccups, Jam Sandwich is finally broadcasting from my new studio, the Palace of Sin. I say "hiccups" because I recorded an episode with our good friend Goodrich Gevaart, but then I fudged something in post and lost the audio. Durr... So, in a tight jam, I invited my beautiful wife to get up off the couch and join me for another session, despite the fact that she was just on the show. No Super Producer Dan this time around, but his spiritual presence helped guide us towards the light. This episode also marks a new edition to the show, as I'm able to plug my turn table in so we can listen to vinyl. This means guests can bring over their favorite records and we'll blast it on air. I'm stoked to say the least! To break in this momentous occasion, we give Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 a spin while I may or may not get a little too sexual with my better half sitting across the table. Since it's just the two of us, sitting in our home, having drinks on a Sunday evening, you get a real sincere portrait of domestic bliss. I also push the boundaries of acceptable dialogue and at one point my wife is literally just screaming the word "DIVORCE" over and over again. If at any point you feel like things get uncomfortable, just know that after the show we totally made up. Sexually. Join us won't you?
