Episode 170 Chapter 29, Buchla Analog Synthesizers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Playlist: THE SAN FRANCISCO TAPE MUSIC CENTER Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:30 00:00 1. Terry Riley, “Mescalin-Mix” (1960-62). Early tape collage and one of Riley's first works for tape. 14:23 01:38 2. Terry Riley, “Concerto For Two Pianos and Five Tape Recorders” )1961). Piano, LaMonte Young; piano and tape assemblage, Terry Riley. Recorded live. 1961 Riley-Terry_ConcertoForTwoPianos-b.wav 04:36 15:56 3. Pauline Oliveros, “Apple Box Double” (performance 2008). This piece was composed for various configurations of apple crates that were touched and scraped with various objects while being amplified. The original dates from about 2006. This performance by Seth Cluett and Oliveros took place in 2008. 12:45 20:30 4. Steve Reich, “Melodica” (1966). Tape piece and the last of Reich's works before moving onto instrumental composition in his minimalist style. 10:42 33:16 5. Morton Subotnick, “Laminations” (1966). For orchestra and electronic sounds, on tape. By this point, Subotnick was working with an early model of a synthesizer built for the San Francisco Tape Music Center by Donald Buchla. This synthesizer material was also used for the opening of Silver Apples of the Moon the following year. 10:29 44:08 6. Morton Subotnick, “Prelude No.4 for piano and electronic tape (1966). Another Subotnick work for instruments and tape with synthesized electronic sounds. 06:58 54:36 7. Pauline Oliveros, “Alien Bog” (1967). Utilizing the original Buchla Box 100 series created for the Tape Music Center by Don Buchla and a tape delay system. 33:17 01:01:30 8. Morton Subotnick, “Silver Apples of the Moon” (1967). Subotnick, recently departed from San Francisco and taking up shop at New York University, brought synthesizers constructed for him by Don Buchla when he was at the San Francisco Tape Music Center. This electronic composition represented a high point for the use of synthesizers at that time and was recorded on commission from Nonesuch Records. 32:01 01:35:00 Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes.

Escuchar audio

Episode 95 Early Intersections of Rock and Electronic Music Playlist Frank Zappa, The Mothers of Invention, “The Return of the Son Of Monster Magnet (Unfinished Ballet In Two Tableaus)” from Freak Out! (1966 Verve). Bass, Guitarrón, Soprano Vocals, Roy Estrada; Drums, Jimmy Carl Black; Guitar, Vocals, Arranged By, Written-By, Leader, Musical Director, Frank Zappa; Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Elliot Ingber; Vocals, Harmonica, Tambourine, Finger Cymbals, Ray Collins. Having been gifted a copy of the Mother's album Freak Out! In 1966, it was apparently this song that stuck in Paul McCartney's mind, inspiring the “Carnival of Light” recording to follow. 12:15 The Beatles, “Carnival of Light” an unreleased track that was commissioned by the Million Volt Light and Sound Rave, an event held at the Roundhouse in London on January 28 and February 4, 1967. Recorded during a session for the song "Penny Lane" in January 1967. Working with the recording studio as a creative tool, this was a project brought to band by Paul McCartney who had been asked by the festival sponsors to create a tape to be featured at the event. It was reported later that McCartney explained the exercise to his bandmates by saying, "This is a bit indulgent, but would you mind giving me 10 minutes? I've been asked to do this thing. All I want you to do is just wander round all of the stuff and bang it, shout, play it." The result was this sound piece. The Beatles were already conditioned for turning out spectacular sound effects in the studio. This was before the Moog Synthesizer came to Abbey Road. Nonetheless, they had access to all manner of guitar effects, echo, reverb, a Mellotron, electronic piano, organ, Lesley speakers and other devices with which to improvise. 13:08 The Riders Of The Mark, “The Electronic Insides And Metal Complexion That Make Up Herr Doktor Krieg” from The Electronic Insides And Metal Complexion That Make Up Herr Doktor Krieg/Gotta Find Somebody (1967 20th Century Fox). I wish I knew more about this band, but I don't. They had this one single. It has sometimes been included on compilation of psychedelia. Rock music, tape reversal, tape echo, fuzz tones, guitars. 2:13 Pink Floyd, “Interstellar Overdrive” from The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967 Columbia). UK release of the formidable Pink Floyd, then making an impact with their first LP. No synthesizers, but there were electronic rock instruments galore and some imaginative stereo imaging, a benefit of working with tape in those days. Bass Guitar, Vocals, Roger Waters; Lead Guitar, Vocals, Syd Barrett; Drums, Nicky Mason; Piano, Organ, Rick Wright. 9:40 Bernard Parmegiani, “Pop'eclectic (1968)” from JazzEx (1999 Plat Lunch). Composed, produced, edited by Bernard Parmegiani. Parmegiani was one of the lesser-known composers associated with the French musique concrete school, although he was no less prolific in many genres, including electronic music for commercials. He was adept at experimenting across genres, providing musique concrete vividness to works for jazz and rock music. I always find his work to be refreshing and uncluttered by musical cliches. 11:03 (Frank Zappa) The Mothers of Invention, “Are You Hung Up?” from We're Only In It For The Money (1968 Verve). Arranged By, Composed By, Conductor, Concept By Conceived, Directed By Executed, Producer, Frank Zappa; Bass, Vocals, Other Asthma, Roy Estrada; Drums, Trumpet, Vocals, Other Indian Of The Group, Jimmy Carl Black; Drums, Vocals, Other Yak & Black Lace Underwear, Billy Mundi; Guitar, Piano, Vocals, Edited By, Other Weirdness, Frank Zappa; Piano, Woodwind, Other Wholesome, Ian Underwood; Saxophone, Other Weirdness & Teen Appeal, Euclid James Motorhead Sherwood; Sounds Snorks, Dick Barber; Voice Creepy Whispering, Engineer, Gary Kellgren; Voice Telephone, Suzy Creamcheese; Woodwind, “Mumbled Weirdness,” Bunk Gardner. 1:30 Silver Apples, “Velvet Cave” from Silver Apples (1968 Kapp). Composed and Arranged by, Dan Taylor, Simeon; Percussion, Dan Taylor; The Simeon (oscillators, filters), Simeon; Vocals, Dan Taylor, Simeon. “INSTRUCTIONS: Play Twice Before Listening.” This two-man group used a genius combination of drums and oscillators, a match made in heaven. 3:27 (Frank Zappa) The Mothers of Invention, “Nasal Retentive Calliope Music” from We're Only In It For The Money (1968 Verve). Arranged By, Composed By, Conductor, Concept By Conceived, Directed By Executed, Producer, Frank Zappa; Bass, Vocals, Other Asthma, Roy Estrada; Drums, Trumpet, Vocals, Other Indian Of The Group, Jimmy Carl Black; Drums, Vocals, Other Yak & Black Lace Underwear, Billy Mundi; Guitar, Piano, Vocals, Edited By, Other Weirdness, Frank Zappa; Piano, Woodwind, Other Wholesome, Ian Underwood; Saxophone, Other Weirdness & Teen Appeal, Euclid James Motorhead Sherwood; Sounds Snorks, Dick Barber; Voice Creepy Whispering, Engineer, Gary Kellgren; Voice Telephone, Suzy Creamcheese; Woodwind, “Mumbled Weirdness,” Bunk Gardner. 2:03 The United States of America, “The American Metaphysical Circus” from The United States of America (1968 Columbia). While the entire psychedelic scene in America was adding tape manipulation, fuzz tones, and echo to their recordings, The United States of America brought a blend of rock musicianship and serious tape collage work to the fore. The tape effects in their music were not the usual brief hooks or the sake of novelty, but fully composed blocks of electronic and found sounds integrated in the core of their tunes. Electric Bass, Rand Forbes; Keyboards, Electronics, Organ, Piano, Arranged, Electric Harpsichord, Calliope, Joseph Byrd; Lead Vocals, Dorothy Moskowitz; Organ, Piano, Calliope, Ed Bogas; Percussion, Drums Electric Drums, Craig Woodson; Producer, David Rubinson; Violin Electric Violin, Ring Modulator, Gordon Marron. 5:07 The United States of America, “Hard Coming Love” from The United States of America (1968 Columbia). Electric Bass, Rand Forbes; Keyboards, Electronics, Organ, Piano, Arranged, Electric Harpsichord, Calliope, Joseph Byrd; Lead Vocals, Dorothy Moskowitz; Organ, Piano, Calliope, Ed Bogas; Percussion, Drums Electric Drums, Craig Woodson; Producer, David Rubinson; Violin Electric Violin, Ring Modulator, Gordon Marron. No synthesizers as such, but Tom Oberheim built ring modulators and other devices for them. 4:48 Bernard Parmegiani, “Du Pop À L'âne (1969)” from JazzEx (1999 Plat Lunch). Composed, produced, edited by Bernard Parmegiani. Of special interest on this track is a sampled chunk of a song by the Doors that appears about 6 minutes in, altered and accompanied by editing and effects. This use of sampling speaks to the liberties that musique concrete musicians were taking with found materials. 10:14 Pierre Henry & Michel Colombier, “Prologue,” “Psyché Rock,” “Jéricho Jerk,” and “Teen Tonic” from Mass For Today / The Green Queen (1969 Limelight). Compilation of earlier works first released in 1967. These four works were part of “Mass for Today,” an electronic rock ballet.” This is a decent collection, with selections from other Henry musique concrete works. The electronic sounds and tape effects seem somewhat heavy-handed now, but at that time, this was what one could do without a synthesizer. Henry was already a maestro of musique concrete by that time so it's especially interesting to see what sounds he added without seeming trite or cliched. Réalisation Sonore, Pierre Henry; Written by, Michel Colombier, Pierre Henry. 9:54 Spooky Tooth and Pierre Henry, “Have Mercy” from Ceremony: An Electronic Mass (1969 Island). Bass Guitar, Andy Leigh; Composed by Gary Wright, Pierre Henry; Drums, Mike Kellie; Electronics, Realisation Sonore, Pierre Henry; Lead Guitar, Luther Grosvenor; Lead Vocals, Mike Harrison; Lead Vocals, Keyboards, Gary Wright. 8:10 The Free Pop Electronic Concept, “Pish! Pshaw!” from A New Exciting Experience (1969 Palette). From Brussels. Bass, James; Composed By, Recorded by Arsène Souffriau; Drums, Stu Martin; Electric Guitar, Jess; Organ, Scott Bradford; Percussion, Tumba, Vinagre. 4:47 The Free Pop Electronic Concept, “Cosmos Rhythms” from A New Exciting Experience (1969 Palette). From Brussels. Bass, James; Composed By, Recorded by Arsène Souffriau; Drums, Stu Martin; Electric Guitar, Jess; Organ, Scott Bradford; Percussion, Tumba, Vinagre. 3:01 Tommy James and the Shondells, “Cellophane Symphony” from Cellophane Symphony (1969 Roulette). This title track was a rare instrumental from this group normally associated with rock vocal hits. This is the only track in this podcast featuring the Moog Modular Synthesizer. There were certainly other examples of the Moog since it was first used in 1967, but I wanted to choose an example of how the synthesizer could be used by a rock band, rather than a pop artist such as Jean Jacques Perrey or Mort Garson. This is a terrific example that I would bet many of my listeners have never heard before. Tommy James, lead vocals, guitars, keyboards; Eddie Gray, lead guitar, backing vocals; Ronnie Rosman – keyboards, backing vocals; Mike Vale, bass guitar, backing vocals; Pete Lucia, drums, percussion, backing vocals. 9:37 West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, “As Kind as Summer” from Vol. 3 - A Child's Guide To Good & Evil (1968 Reprise). American psychedelic rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1965, broke up in 1969. Three teens (brothers Dan and Shaun Harris and their friend Michael Lloyd) teamed up with 30-year old Bob Markley, who got them a record deal with Reprise. Each of their albums was most bizarre, combining hummable pop tunes and spacey production. I included this particular track because it starkly demonstrates the use of tape loops and sound reversal. 1:10 Toshi Ichiyanagi, The Flowers, "Electric Chant” and “The Flowers (内田裕也とザ・フラワーズ)” from Opera "From The Works Of Tadanori Yokoo (1969 The End Record). Composed by Toshi Ichiyanagi and performed by the Japanese rock group The Flowers: Bass, Takeshi Hashimoto; Drums, Joji Wada; Guitar, Vocals, Remi Aso; Percussion, Backing Vocals, Yuya Uchida; Steel Guitar, Katsuhiko Kobayashi; Vocals, Hiroshi Chiba, Kento Nakamura. I'm including two pieces from this opera from 1969. The first, “Electric Chant” is electronic and includes tape collage while the second, “The Flowers” was performed by the Japanese pop rock band The Flowers and is loaded with distortion, echo, feedback, and reverberation, transforming the simple rock format into a discourse in electronic sound. 5:17 & 7:18 Tim Buckley, “Starsailor” from Starsailor (1970 Bizarre). Engineer, Stan Agol; Vocals, Producer, Written by, Tim Buckley. According to Larry Beckett, Buckley's chief lyricist and collaborator, who was there when they recorded this track, Buckley had a basic lyric track to which he recorded 18 additional vocals tracks on top of it. “He didn't write it out as a classical musician does, but it was thoroughly composed.” From the standpoint of rock music, this was more akin to composing with tone clusters than chord progressions. 4:34 Opening background music: Luc Ferrari, “Dialogue Ordinaire Avec La Machine (1984)” from Dialogue Ordinaire Avec La Machine / Sexolidad (2019 Elica). Composed and performed by Luc Ferrari. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. Greetings & welcome to another edition of Pushing The Envelope. The 5/14 program focused on longer pieces since I was jammed for time due to a week spent travelling (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho) with my daughter, her husband and four and a half year old twins. When I got back I needed a vacation from the vacation. As usual, music from all over the spectrum. Enjoy! This week we watched an episode unlike any other SVU in the catalog. A young girl from Kansas is abandoned by her Fireball-shooting friends, drugged with exotic psychedelics, raped, and forced to dig her own physical and metaphorical grave by the acolytes of a famed radical psychologist who just so happens to have been SVU's own resident Alice-In-Wonderland-expert Amanda Rollins's former guru. Between blue rape avatars, expensive music cues, and extensive literary references, things get pretty weird. This, of course, is all just fuel for the Munch fire as Josh and Adam discuss the hero's journey; pedicab culture; early 20th century Swedish folklore illustrator, John Bauer; famed ethnobotanist and drug user, Terrence McKenna; famed memoirist and sex haver, Anaïs Nin; and whether or not we're too old to pick up trendy new drug habits. Thai cover version of Elvis' "Little Sister" Silver Apples - Oscillations (1968) Silver Apples - Program (1968) Silver Apples - I Don't Care What The People Say (1998) Silver Apples- You and I (1969) Decades after their brief yet influential career ground to a sudden halt due to being sued for exorbitant amounts by Pan Am Airlines, Silver Apples remain one of pop music's true enigmas: a surreal, almost unprecedented duo, their music explored interstellar drones and hums, pulsing rhythms and electronically-generated melodies years before similar ideas were adopted in the work of acolytes ranging from Suicide to Spacemen 3 to Laika. Silver Apples was formed in New York in 1967 and comprised percussionist Danny Taylor and lead vocalist Simeon, who played an instrument also dubbed the Simeon, which (according to notes on the duo's self-titled 1968 debut LP) consisted of "nine audio oscillators and eighty-six manual controls... The lead and rhythm oscillators are played with the hands, elbows and knees and the bass oscillators are played with the feet." Although the utterly uncommercial record — an ingenious cacophony of beeps, buzzes, and beats — sold poorly, the Silver Apples resurfaced a year later with their sophomore effort, 'Contact', another far-flung outing which fared no better than its predecessor. This record's cover, depicting the duo in the cockpit of a Pan Am airplane, resulted in a legal battle that left the band unable to continue recording and releasing music. However, in 1996 the Silver Apples resurfaced, as Simeon and new partner Xian Hawkins released the single "Fractal Flow." American and European tours followed, and a year later a new LP, 'Beacon', was released to wide acclaim. Simeon Coxe died on September 8, 2020. Wendy & Bonnie - The Winter Is Cold (1969) From Under The Radar: Genesis, released in 1969, was the one and only album from sisters Wendy and Bonnie Flower. The San Francisco-based siblings were 18 and 15 at the time the album was originally released, and the music of Genesis belies their tender ages. The songs on Genesis are light psychedelic folk, reminiscent of artists like The Free Design, Tim Buckley, and, to a certain degree, fellow Californians, The Mamas and the Papas. The sisters' harmonies are the main draw, floating into the ether above the airy soundscapes. While songs like “Let Yourself Go Another Time” and “The Winter Is Cold” are upbeat and jaunty, most of Genesis is restrained beauty. The album has been championed of late by artists the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Stereolab, and Super Furry Animals, the latter of which sampled the gentle Wendy & Bonnie paean “By the Sea” in the opening of its 2003 song, “Hello Sunshine.” Unfortunately, at the time of its initial release, Genesis did not find as impressive a following. Shortly after the album was released, and amid promotion for the record that included an aborted slot on The Merv Griffin Show, the group's record label, Skye Records, dissolved due to bankruptcy. Subsequently, Wendy and Bonnie Flower faded into seeming obscurity. Then my show came along. This show opens with Cal Tjader, who co-owned Skye Records along with being an in-demand percussionist. he was a family friend that thought the young girls would benefit from not being thrust into the pop scene without a guiding hand on their team. But when the label went belly-up, Bonnie went off to college. I like most of this album. I wonder how many other hidden masterpieces got snuffed out before they got a chance to be heard by a wider audience. I mean these two teenagers, 15 and 18, got pretty far relatively speaking. Even for the time. Wendy and Bonnie - By the Sea (1969) Wendy and Bonnie - Five O'Clock In the Morning (1969) Wendy and Bonnie - Let Yourself Go Another Time (1969) Yardbirds - Knowing That I'm Losing You (Tangerine) (1968) Yardbirds - White Summer (1968) The Yardbirds - Glimpses (1967) The Yardbirds - Dazed and Confused (1968) Eric Burdon & The Animals - Orange And Red Beam (1968) Freee Fall - Big Mack Truck -????? That's really how it's spelled. Recorded "live" onboard Norwegian Cruise Liners and, as the name states, intended for the passenger/tourist audiences. I enlarged the back cover because it's amazing. Apparently Norwegian gave these passenger-only records as gifts. I gotta get some more. Brandon Wade - Letter From a Teenage Son (1967) Bulldog - Rock & Roll Hootchi Coo (1974) Rick Derringer (the composer) spelled it "Hoochie Koo". Believe it or not, it had been rendered on vinyl three times before his own recording in 1973 became his biggest hit (by far). It was first recorded in 1970 by Johnny Winter and his band, Johnny Winter And, of which Derringer was a member. In 1973, Derringer recorded a solo version, which was his only Top 40 chart hit as a solo artist in the U.S. It became a staple of 1970s radio and rock music compilations. The song was initially recorded by Johnny Winter in 1970 with his band "Johnny Winter And", which included Rick Derringer and other former members of The McCoys, Derringer's previous band ("Hang On Sloopy" was their biggest hit...by far.). In 1970, they recorded the song during the Live Johnny Winter And tour, which was released as Live at the Fillmore East 10/3/70. Winter and Derringer later recorded the song with Winter's brother for Edgar Winter's White Trash live 1972 album Roadwork. Bulldog was an obscure spinoff of The Rascals that formed in 1971. Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli, after leaving their successful act behind, signed with Decca Records. That first album sank without a trace, and their contract with Decca came to an abrupt end and Bulldog spent the majority of 1973 trying to avoid the oldies circuit that had started swallowing up their contemporaries. They signed with Neil Bogart's Buddha Records in 1974 and released Smasher. Perhaps Buddha's primary reputation for bubblegum and novelty records can explain why this release was virtually ignored upon its release. The album sank without even a slight showing on the Billboard charts and Bulldog was dead by early 1975. Cornish and Danelli would resurface a few years later, teaming up with Wally Bryson (Raspberries) in the power-pop act, Fotomaker. Though they issued several albums, they too were dealt a merciless death, leaving Cornish and Danelli on the oldies circuit in a revived lineup of The Rascals. They would later be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame along with the rest of their former bandmates that they had worked so hard to extricate themselves from. Rick Derringer rererererecorded the song in 2012, a new version of the song with lyrics reflecting his Christian beliefs. Titled "Read the Word and Live It Too". He supported Trump. So f him. Cledus Maggard - Virgil And The $300 Vacation (1976) I've played Cledus Maggard and The Citizen's Band on my show once before, playing the song "The White Knight" on my CB Radio show. Leslie Podkin - You Won't Need No Money (1961) Ogo - Marijuana [Guam] (?) Roy E. Baker - Ballad Of The Abortion Child (A Love Letter From Heaven) (1974) Obituary: Roy “Boy” Edward Baker, age 85 of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2014. Roy was born May 28, 1929, in the coal mining town of Hazard, KY to Gilbert and Mahalia Baker. It was growing up in Hazard that he picked up the nickname “Roy Boy.” He was never able to shake the nickname and it has followed him throughout his life. He was affectionately known as “Roy Boy” by the many friends that loved him so. As a boy, Roy was a Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer all rolled into one. In the small coal-mining where he lived, people worked hard and went to bed early. At night, Roy Boy would slip out of a bedroom window just to wake the town by ringing the church bell. He was the epitome of mischief. His father was a coal miner and Roy grew up expecting that he would follow in those footsteps. It didn't take him long to decide he needed to pursue something else. “I worked a half-day in a coal mine where donkeys drug the coal out. I decided that was not the life for me,” he said. Roy left the coal mining town where he grew up and continued to have a career with General Motors in the tool and die industry. An accomplished musician playing piano, guitar, banjo, drums, and the bull-fiddle, Roy enjoyed many years as a musician, singer, and songwriter. While working for General Motors, he often played musical shows on weekends. The name “Roy Boy” became his stage name. As a movie actor, he played the part of a coal miner in the movie “October Sky,” which was partly filmed in Knoxville and Oliver Springs. When he was nine years old, Roy began drawing cartoons and selling them to his classmates in Hazard. A true patriot of America, Roy continued to use his talents drawing pictures that exemplified his patriotic love of God and country. On any given day you could find him sharing his art with friends at fast-food restaurants. His trademark was the patriotic clothing that he designed and wore in support of America. His iconic little red and white striped truck proudly displayed the American flag and could be seen in parades and events all over East Tennessee. His support for humanitarian projects was recognized and honored in various circles. He was recognized as the Man of the Year in Abstract Art by the city of Knoxville in 2007. Episode 31 Electronic Literature The Marriage of Electronic Music, Poetry, and Literature Playlist Luciano Berio, "Thema (Omaggio A Joyce)," from Orient-Occident/Momenti-Omaggio A Joyce/Continuo/Transition 1 (1967 Philips). Composed by Luciano Berio at the RAI studio in Milan. Vocals, Cathy Berberian. The piece dates from 1958-59. An exploration of editing and tape composition with the voice as a key source of audio material. This is an interpretative reading of the poem "Sirens" from chapter 11 of the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. This release on the Philips Prospective 21e Siècle is shorter than the one released around the same time on the Turnabout label in America. It omits the spoken sequence at the beginning where Berberian recites the words prior to them being manipulated on tape. John Cage/David Tudor, "Side 3" excerpt from Indeterminacy: New Aspect of Form in Instrumental And Electronic Music (1959 Folkways). John Cage reads previously prepared stories and anecdotes, David Tudor performs electronic music at the same time with no Earthly connection between the two. This was a long-standing performance practice of theirs and I saw them do this several times. John Cage, "Part One (To Line 220)" from Roaratorio: An Irish Circus On Finnegans Wake (1992 Mode), excerpt, for speaker, Irish musicians and 62-track tape. Speaker, John Cage. Production: WDR, Köln; Süddeutscher Rundfunk, Stuttgart; Katholieke Radio Omroep, Hilversum; Technical cooperation: IRCAM, Paris. First transmission: 22 October 1979, WDR3-Hörspielstudio. This score is a means for translating any book into a performance without actors, a performance which is both literary and musical or one or the other. In this case, the book was Finnegans Wake by James Joyce. The text of Roaratorio was published separately as Writing for the Second Time Through Finnegans Wake. This was part of the evolution of Cage's interest in creating works of text for performance with music and other activities. It further evolved into his use of texts by Henry David Thoreau for which he used chance processes to derive a text for solo vocal performance. Shakespeare, excerpt, (1962 Odhams Books Ltd.). BBC radioplay production with musique concrète by Desmond Leslie. King Henry is played by Richard Burton. Electronic music provided on tape for a set of Shakespeare play productions. This short. 2 and a half-minute segment is from Act IV, Scene 3 and gives you an idea of how the sound effects was joined with the dialog. This was a common outlet for electronic music in the UK. Shackleton, “Music For The Quiet Hour, Part 2,” excerpt, from Music For The Quiet Hour (2012 Woe To The Septic Heart!). Vocals, words (poetry), Vengeance Tenfold; Composer, producer, A. Gerth, K. Biswas, Sam Shackleton. A collaboration between producer Shackleton and vocalist Vengeance Tenfold. Beats, bass and rhythm patterns provide a backdrop for some stark poetry. This is a portion of a longer work that whose overall length is about an hour. Lily Greenham, “Traffic” from Lingual Music (2007 Paradigm Discs). Reissue of text-sound works made by Danish concrete poet Lily Greenham, probably between 1972-75. Hugh Davies is credited with assisting on the electronics for this work. Voice: Lily Greenham. Anne Clark, "Swimming" and "An Ordinary Life" from The Sitting Room (1982 Red Flame). Clark is a foremost British poet who fuses her texts with electronic music. This was the first of her albums. Words, Keyboards, Electronic Percussion, Water Percussion, Anne Clark; Guitar, Effects, Voice, Gary Mundy; Keyboards, Domonic Appleton, Patrik Fitzgerald; Keyboards, Electronic Percussion, Andrea Laschetti. Rick Wakeman, “The Journey,” excerpt, from Journey to the Center of the Earth (1974 A&M). Recorded in concert at The Royal Festival Hall London on Friday January 18th 1974. Synthesizers and other keyboards, Rick Wakeman; Narrator, David Hemmings; drums, Barney James; guitar, Mike Egan; accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Measham. Alan Parsons Project, "The Raven" from Tales of Mystery and Imagination - Edgar Allan Poe (1976 Charisma). Words from the tale of the same name by Poe. The Harmony Vocoder heard on "The Raven" was invented and built by EMI Central Research Laboratories.Keyboards, Alan Parsons, Andrew Powell, Billy Lyall, Christopher North, Eric Woolfson, Francis Monkman; Composed by Alan Parsons, Andrew Powell, and Eric Woolfson.
On episode 134 of The Quarantine Tapes, Paul Holdengräber is joined by composer Morton Subotnick. Morton is a pioneering composer in electronic music. Morton and Paul discuss the changes in music since the 1950s and when Morton realized that he was living through a pivotal moment in the history of music.Morton worked on the development of early electronic instruments. He talks about how technology has changed the process of making and listening to music. Then, Paul and Morton touch on Mozart, Stan Brakhage, and the challenge of trying to make “new new” music instead of just “new old” music. Morton Subotnick is one of the pioneers in the development of electronic music and multi-media performance and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. Most of his music calls for a computer part, or live electronic processing; his oeuvre utilizes many of the important technological breakthroughs in the history of the genre. His work Silver Apples of the Moon has become a modern classic and was recently entered into the National Registry of Recorded works at the Library of Congress. Only 300 recordings throughout the entire history of recordings have been chosen.Subotnick is also doing pioneering work to offer musical creative tools to young children. He has authored a series of six CD ROMS for children, a children's website, and developing a program for classroom and after school programs that will soon become available internationally. He tours extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe as a lecturer, composer, and performer.

In this week's episode, we invite cult meta-comedian and out-there-music connoisseur Stewart Lee to discuss the new documentary he's made about Prefects/Nightingales legend Robert Lloyd. Stewart also pitches in on RBP's new audio interview, a 1991 conversation 'twixt the late Andy Gill and everyone's favourite choirboy-voiced Commie Robert Wyatt. In addition we consider the week's featured RBP writer Caitlin Moran, with especial attention to her hair-raising 1994 encounter with Courtney Love. Plus we bid a fond farewell to Kool & the Gang co-founder Ronald "Khalis" Bell and to Simeon Coxe of pioneering '60s oscillators Silver Apples...Finally, with intermittent interjections from Mr. Lee, Mark picks highlights from the week's trove of new additions to the RBP library, including top pieces on Jimi Hendrix (1967), Rodney "Mayor of Sunset Strip" Bingenheimer (1979), Spandau Ballet (1981) and inimitable drag superstar RuPaul (1993). Nú þegar heimsmeistaramótið í handknattleik stendur yfir er viðeigandi að líta um öxl og minnast þess þegar sama mót var haldið á Íslandi fyrir aldarfjórðung. Næstu daga flytjur Lestin örseríuna Þegar Ísland hélt stórmót og í fyrsta þætti ætlum við að skoða aðdragandan að HM '95, þar sem gekk á ýmsu og jafnvel kom til greina að hætta við mótið. Ein áhrifamesta plata allra tíma er ein fyrsta raftónlistarplata sögunnar, Silver Apples of the Moon frá árinu 1967 eftir bandaríska tónskáldið Morton Subotnick.

Rick James [00:33] a side: "Super Freak (Part I)" b side: "Super Freak (Part II)" Gordy G 7205F 1981 What's better than "Super Freak", more "Super Freak" evidently. Made it all the way to number 16 on the Hot 100. And partially recorded at the Record Plant in good ol' Sausalito. The Trashmen [07:29] a side: "Surfin' Bird" b side: "King of the Surf" Garrett Records GA-4002 1963 From the surf epicenter of Minneapolis MN, The Trashmen answer the eternal question: What happens when you fuse The Rivingtons "Bird's the Word" and "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" together. Hit number 4 on the Hot 100 in 1961. Killer Dreamer [13:23] a side: "Survival Guns" b side: "Pterodactyl2" Kapow Records #14 2003 Early aughties punk from San Pedro, on lovely opaque white vinyl. Sharon Cash [17:39] a side: "Sweet Soul Singer (stereo)" b side: "Sweet Soul Singer (mono)" Playboy Records P 50026 1973 Mystery single from a mystery singer? Ohio Express [25:04] a side: "Sweeter Than Sugar" b side: "Bitter Lemon" Buddha Records BDA 92 1969 See Joe Tex. Who needs to record a b-side when you can just flip the tape around? Sadly only made it to number 96 on the charts. But then again, it's no "Yummy Yummy Yummy". The Normal [29:20] a side: "T.V.O.D." b side: "Warm Leatherette" Mute Records MUTE 001 1978 AKA Daniel Miller. A little Kraftwerk-esque, a little Silver Apples-esge, a lot JG Ballard-esque. Soft Cell [36:38] a side: "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?" b side: "Where Did Our Love Go?" Sire Records PRO-S-1028 1981 Well this is convenient. Back to back synthpop. You can hear the evolution from inception to peak synthpop. Plus, more effects from the reign of Northern Soul. Also, if you haven't listened to Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret recently, or ever, you should really take it for a spin. ABBA [45:03] a side: "Take a Chance on Me" b side: "I'm a Marionette" Atlantic Records 3457 1977 Yes indeed, one year prior to bleak commentary on contemporary life that is The Normal, this top notch chartbuster from ABBA that reached number 3 on the Hot 100. And that is a very epic flipside. Music behind the DJ: "My Bonnie Lies" by The Ventures.
I helped kickoff the start of this year's FunDrive. Played a slightly altered version of Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" and "Ruby" by Silver Apples. Support CiTR if you can: citr.ca/donate! In addition to the station's great incentives, I'm offering:- At the $30 level, a Duncan's Donuts 60min Workout Mix. Because if you're going to make it through a dozen dozens, you need stamina and perseverence, and that means trying. This all makes logical sense, trust me.- At the 101.9fm level, a Dunkerchief. A handmade hankerchief, specifically designed to dust the donut crumbs from the corners of your mouth. Some might say this whole donut thing is played out. To which I say, maybe? These things are still great, though. That's...undeniable.
Om 22:00 uur Stan Rijven met Radio Ritmundo op 40UP Radio. 100 jaar geleden vond de eerste radio uitzending plaats in Nederland. She’s a composer and vocalist who’s performed with pretty much every orchestra on earth. He’s a composer best known for his electronic music, especially an early work, Silver Apples of the Moon. “Lawyer and Other Lawyer to Wed,” runs pretty much every NY Times wedding announcement. How did it omit theirs?
The Troggs a side: "I Can't Control Myself" b side: "Gonna Make You" ATCO Records 45-6444 1966 Low slacks?! Good heavens! Silver Apples a side: "I Don't Know" One Cut Kill b side: "White Russian/Black Heart" Gifted Children Records GCV07-001 2007 Picked this up at a Silver Apples show at Cafe du Nord in 2007 (obvs) which also happened to be my first exposure to Thee Oh Sees live. Hooo boy, that was a night. Neil Sedaka a side: "I Go Ape" b side: "Moon of Gold" RCA Victor 47-7473 1959 Of course this is one of my go-to's when spinning live. Etta James a side: "I Got You" b side: "I Worship the Ground You Walk On" Cadet 5606 1968 Huh, you'd think I'd have the Sonny & Cher versions of this, but this super funky version will do just fine indeed. Killer b-side as well. The Miracles a side: "I Gotta Dance to Keep from Cryin'" b side: "Such Is Love, Such Is Life" TAMLA T-54089 1963 Certainly one of my most favorite singles ever. My toe is tapping just thinking about it. Frida a side: "I Know There's Something Going On" b side: "Threnody" Atlantic Records 7-89984 1982 Yes, by the same man who brought us middling "Since You've Been Gone", Rainbow's meh hit single (https://youtu.be/1P17ct4e5OE). And hey produced and drummed by the illustrious Phil Collins! But you know I will never speak ill of Anni-Frid (https://youtu.be/p98PjtSfNWo). Joan Jett & the Blackhearts a side: "I Love Rock 'n Roll" b side: "You Don't Know What You've Got" Boardwalk NB7-11-135 The short lived Boardwalk Records was Neil Bogart's follow up to Casablanca Records. And again, awesome b-side. Outer Limit Recordings a side: "I Need My T.V." The Sweethearts b side: "Burnin Through the Night" Olde English Spelling Bee OESB-710 I think this arrived with a couple of R. Stevie Moore (https://youtu.be/OprzFKwpeGY) reissues. Morton Subotnick In Conversation with Katie Gately On the heels of the 50th anniversary of his album, Silver Apples of the Moon, Morton Subotnick came to LA to perform two celebratory shows at CalArts. He sat down with Katie Gately at the dublab Studio to talk about this legendary electronic album, his current performance practice, and the history behind his groundbreaking compositional approach. Subotnick also touched upon his storied collaborations with the electronic music innovators, Don Buchla, Ramon Sender, and the members of the San Francisco Tape Music Center. Morton Subotnick is a pioneer in the development of electronic music and multi-media performance and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. Most of his music calls for a computer part, or live electronic processing; his oeuvre utilizes many of the important technological breakthroughs in the history of the genre. His work, Silver Apples of the Moon, has become a modern classic and was recently entered into the National Registry of Recorded Works at the Library of Congress. “First you make the machine, then the machine makes you” -Marshall McCluhan In Conversation is produced by dublab. Sound editing and music are by Matteah Baim. Due to rights reasons music from the original broadcast has been removed. To hear more, please visit dublab.com.

Personal heroes. This is a very personal subject for most people, because our choice of heroes says a lot about us. My reverence for Morton's work has a lot to do with how it changed my ears - and therefore my life. Being introduced to Silver Apples allowed me to think of music as a less discrete, more fluid, material. Don't need to limit yourself to standard instruments focused on verses and choruses; you can choose to use electrons to develop phrases, premonitions, echoes and silence instead. I was never able to think of (or hear) music the same way again. In this chat, Morton and I talk about his current work, the events that got him to think about electronic music, and how he came to revisit the use of the Buchla modular system. We also talk a little bit about his upcoming book project, and the documentary that is being made about him. But it was a relaxed and enjoyable chat - appropriate for this highlight of my podcast: Number 200. Thanks again to everyone that has been listening over the years. Keep on listening, and I'll keep on doing it - now enjoy!
When Alex Maas from The Black Angels heard avant garde electronic pop band Silver Apples' first record in a bar in Cincinnati he had what he describes as a spiritual experience. Listen as he describes the effect that Silvers Apples had on The Black Angels music and how their new record "Death Song" has been an exercise in trying to understand the world we live in now.

About Stanley Warren.. My first area of creative expression has been poetry. I have written some 1500 poems, of which several dozen have been published here and there, but many more recited at readings. In my late twenties I became the lyricist for a progressive electronic combo called Silver Apples, writing the words to seven of the nine songs on their first album, music that is played and listened to today. The Avid Reader Show is sponsored by Wellington Square Bookshop in Chester County, PA. The show airs Monday's at 4PM EST on WCHE AM 1520. Please visit us at www.wellingtonsquarebooks.com.

Morton Subotnick released the first all-electronic album, Silver Apples of the Moon, in 1967. Last Friday, he returned to Moogfest 2012 in Asheville, N.C., to perform the whole thing live. Hear the performance in its entirety.
Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden explains why Silver Apples of the Moon by the American composer Morton Subotnick stands out for him as a classic of early electronic music. Author and journalist Rob Young provides some background to the work, which was created on a Buchla synthesizer at the San Francisco Tape Music Center, and conceived specifically for two sides of an LP.
Seeing as we are in Canada for the weekend (dear thieves, the house is not unoccupied, and the lad staying there is a fighty little fucker), I figured some Canadian songs might be in order. I am actually half-Canadian, which is a bit odd, because I've never actually lived there. So it's always weird coming here, to a country I'm technically from, but which I really don't know at all. Given we played Born Gold, Odonis Odonis, Slow Down Molasses and Hot Panda on last week's show, however, I figured that was probably enough new Canadian bands for the time being, although the excellent Hooded Fang did sneak on this one at the beginning. But mostly, apart from the more usual new stuff I tend to play, I've included a handful of nostalgic songs by Canadian bands, most of which I haven't listened to in quite a long time. And I must say it was sort of nice to look this stuff up again, after so long. 01. Hooded Fang - E.S.P. (00.44)02. The Tragically Hip - Ahead By a Century (09.26)03. UMA - Drop Your Soul (feat. This show features several new releases from March 29. More information about the records is below.*Update!* I think I mentioned in this show that All Eternals Deck was the Mountain Goats third LP, which is obviously incorrect (ouch, indie cred!). What I meant to and should have said was that this is the third LP with a more rock-oriented trio. Sorry, ya'll.Beat City Radio #583 PlaylistDownload show (right-click, save target as): Beat City Radio #583Stream: A Few of This Week's New Releases The Mountain Goats released All Eternals Deck, which takes its name from a fictional set of tarot cards. The album shows that John Darnielle's songwriting is still quite solid and the rhythm section gets a boost from Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster. Stream the album on NPR's website. Favorite tracks: Damn These Vampires, High Hawk Season, The Autopsy Garland, For Charles Bronson, Birth of Serpents.Hosannas is a duo from Portlandia who create sweeping and beautiful experimental dream pop tinged with cosmic spaghetti western sounds and shoegazing tendencies. They are back with a FREE EP, Thug Life Nicole, that follows the release of their third album, Together late last year. Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, and vocals, the Duo plays space against form to create a primeval sound experience." This experimental psychedelic duo dropped Mazes this week on Sacred Bones Records.Bonus mp3s:Moon Duo - MazesMoon Duo - ScarsMoon Duo - When You Cut The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are a shoegazing bliss/gliss rock quartet from Brooklyn, NY. They released their debut self-titled album a couple of years ago to much critical acclaim. That record was very much rooted in the 80s, with elements of post-punk, dream pop, twee, and the C86 sound. It was a very saccharine heart-on-the-sleeve album, but balanced those elements with some darker tones and distortion. The sophomore album, Belong out on Slumberland Records, builds on the first album's elements and takes them further with a BIG and slick wall of sound production style, courtesy of Flood and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode). The overall sound of this album is early 90s guitar pop-rock, though there are some synth-washed tracks that recall Modern English and The Cure. Belong is a big-sounding, shimmering and slick, heart-breakingly blissful record that glides along beautifully and is enjoyable, though cloying at times. Favorite tracks: Heart in Your Heartbreak, My Terrible Friend,Anne With an E, The Body.Bonus mp3:The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - I Wanna Go All the Way (B-side of the Belong 7" vinyl single). We also played a new one from Swedish indie rockers Peter Bjorn and John's new album, Gimme Some and a couple from Dirty Beaches. We'll feature Dirty Beaches in another post.Enjoy!Bonus Video: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Young Adult Friction from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart out on Slumberland Records in 2009.
