This week on Dread Media, Desmond is frustrated with a double feature of films with a trope he can't stand anymore. Thankfully, Tom is there to help him through it. First, a film censor keeping the public safe from video nasties goes through some stuff in Censor. Then, is a comic book at fault for the vicious murders in Random Acts of Violence? Probably. Songs included: "Nasty" by The Damned, "Stabbing Nightmare" by Video Nasties, "Follow the Blood" by Cannibal Corpse, and "The Void from Which No Sound Escapes" by Rivers of Nihil. What happens when you order things online and send them back? You may think it makes its way back to the shelf and on its way to another person, but that is rarely true. Oftentimes items make their way to bulk resellers overseas, stripped for parts, or just thrown away. Returns are a big problem for companies that are expected to have generous return policies as a default. These reverse logistics are many times cost prohibitive to deal with. It is always a little worrisome when a former president goes into the hospital, but former President Bill Clinton has responded well to his medications and been discharged after a urological infection went into his bloodstream. He will now go back home to NY to continue treatment. Ginger Gibson, deputy Washington digital editor at NBC News joins us for the update on Bill Clinton and what is next for election day. The race for governor in Virginia and school board races across the country are making education a central issue as critical race theory and Covid rules loom large. They said it couldn't last, so we had to prove them wrong... by making an episode of Strong Songs all about Janet Jackson, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis. It's time to go back to the late 80s, when New Jack Swing was all the rage and a budding superstar named Janet sat down with a pair of Minneapolis producers named Jimmy and Terry to produce some of the most groundbreaking pop music of the decade. This episode takes a look at "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," one of the most complex of their collaborations, and a tune with as many stylistic left-turns as it has orchestra hits.Written by: James Harris III and Terry LewisProduced by: Janet Jackson, Jam & LewisAlbum: Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, 1989Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | SpotifyFEATURED/DISCUSSED:“Casey Kasem's American Top 40 intro from the 1980s, via YouTube“Kiss” by Prince from Parade, 1986“Walking on Broken Glass” by Annie Lennox from Diva, 1992“Like a Prayer” by Madonna from Like a Prayer, 1989“Control,” “Nasty,” and “When I Think of You” by Janet Jackson/Jam & Lewis from Control, 1986"Rhythm Nation" and "Miss You Much" from Rhythm Nation 1814, 1989Emu SP-1200 Beatmaking demonstration by Chief Rugged on YouTubeDiscussion of New Jack Swing, which you can learn more about here“Poison” by Bel Biv DeVoe from Poison, 1990“Alice, I Want You Just For Me” by Full Force, produced by Teddy Riley on Full Force, 1985Estelle Caswell's Vox Earworm video about the Orchestra Hit“The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac from Rumors, 1977OUTRO SOLOIST: Dan NervoThis episode's outro soloist is the fantastic Dan Nervo. Today we talk about the third episode of Generation Kill (Screwby). We talk about how the fog of war is everywhere and even avoiding friendly fire can be a real challenge on a kinetic battlefield. We get into how to break the tension during moments of high stress and how to work with a Soldier or Marine who maybe got a little trigger-happy. Sayre was a Ranger-qualified Infantry Officer and served as a platoon leader for the entirety of a twelve month deployment to Zhari District, Afghanistan with the 101st Airborne Division's 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment during the troop surge of 2010-2011.

Three-fourths of NTS is back from Maine. Which would be great, if 50% of NTS wasn't leaving for Florida shortly after. But this week, the guys make the best of it, offering up another year's worth of backwoods storytelling, a few strong predictions about this upcoming Disney trip, and some messed up headlines about America's junk, just for good measure.
No, the podcast is not named after one of Fish's many nicknames, it's named after the Rando Texto we did today. We had a sister-with-a-brain message us about her husband's nasty meat. That isn't a euphemism, she was writing us to tell us about some old deer meat he had sitting in their freezer for over 2 years. She wants to toss it, but he says it is still good. What do you think? Also on the show, Christine almost ruins the Text Question of the Day with her weird answer, Steve reviewed two manly movies coming out this weekend, and what would you do if a judge refused to grant you a divorce even though you an your spouse both want one? All of that and much more on today's show!

With less than a month left in the year it's a tight race for who could be the AL MVP... or is it? Van, Brian, and Ron discuss whether they think Shohei Ohtani has the award in the bag or if Vlad Jr can snatch it from his hands. The boys also talk several interesting performances from this year with an eye on 2022 and then finish off the show with quite possibly the greatest Triple Slash performance you've ever seen!
Do you need to always be good to be good? Or is sometimes good to say "weeeeeeeeeeeeellll, I'll be. How about me be nasty?"? Sometimes to get the job done you need to roll up your sleeves and reach in the toilet and touch the turds "Lets get nasty!"
While every developer loves a good story about discovering and fixing a gnarly bug, not everyone enjoys the work of finding those bugs. Most folks would prefer to be writing business logic and solving new problems. But those input validation errors and resource leaks won't solve themselves. Or will they?AWS Bug Bust is a global competition launched with the goal of finding and fixing one million bugs in codebases around the world. It takes the traditional bug bash and turns it into a competition that anyone can enter. Got a repo or two that you've been meaning to clean up? Enter the Bug Bust and start squashing. This competition awards points to organizations, as well as individuals within an organization, for every bug that they fix in their own repos. A little friendly competition can motivate developers to fix more bugs in order to move up the leaderboards. How do you think we built Stack Overflow? Fake internet points are very important around here. With the Bug Bust competition, it's not just fake internet points and personal glory; top bug squashers—overall and within top organizations—can win all expense paid trips to re:Invent 2021. In a traditional bug bust, someone has to find the bugs, file tickets on all of them, then collect them for squashing. In the Bug Bust, Amazon has managed to automate that part of the process. That's because the Bug Bust is built on their AI-powered code review and profiling tool, CodeGuru. CodeGuru uses static analysis and machine learning with some additional automated reasoning to find bugs in code; everything from best practices to concurrency issues, resource leaks, security problems, and more. AI isn't here to take your jobs, it's here to automated away the tedious stuff. Developers get to harness the power of artificial intelligence in their everyday lives.Concurrency and resource leak issues tend to drain the soul out of the developers. You could spend all day trying to optimize and close those. CodeGuru includes a function profiler that looks for a codebase's most expensive calls. It's a lightweight agent actively running and looking for ways to reduce the cost of the running application. These bugs, along with security issues and AWS API calls, are the ones that earn the most points. But all bugs earn their bashers points; CodeGuru spots code inefficiencies, duplications, and general code quality detectors, and performs input validation. The model behind this is pretrained on years of Amazon bug hunting experience. The system does learn from you as to what is a good bug in your codebase, but it's not training on your code. It's your feedback that makes CodeGuru a better bug hunter. If you have Java and Python code in a GitHub, GitHub Enterprise, Bitbucket, or AWS CodeCommit repository, you can jump into the competition. Sign up with your email and you get 30 days to run as many Bug Busts as you want for free. The top ten individual bug busters get VIP treatment at the 2021 re:Invent conference (and an all-expense-paid trip there), which is being held in person this year. Top participating organizations get a ticket to give to one of their developers as well. For those bashers outside of the top ten, you can still earn some sweet swag by passing some point milestones. The contest to win the trip to re:Invent 2021 runs through September, but you can still automate your bug bashes and get swag anytime. Want to get started? Head over to the AWS Bug Bust site now.
