We are officially in the phase of a campaign where decency gets tossed aside and the opposition research file is emptied directly into a 30-second spot. One local ad targeting Cook County Commissioner Samantha Steele opens with footage from her DUI arrest and the now-infamous line, “I'm an elected official.” The ad's structure is ruthlessly efficient. Lead with the footage. Transition from self-importance to alleged abuse of power. Tie it together with a tagline about rules not applying to her. On the nasty scale, it earns high marks. It is disciplined, rhythmic, and unforgiving. Then there is the Texas Senate Republican primary, where the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Sen. John Cornyn are going directly at Attorney General Ken Paxton. Divorce. Allegations of infidelity. Wealth accumulation during scandal. Even insinuations about cultural issues designed to rile the base. It is the kind of ad that signals panic or confidence. Sometimes both.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Contrast that with Paxton's softer spot featuring his daughter speaking about him as a grandfather. It is the standard counterpunch to a scandal narrative: humanize, slow down, soften the edges. When campaigns spend that kind of money on family-centered messaging, it usually means they are trying to cover something sharp underneath. The larger point is simple. As we approach primary day, the gloves are off.Tariffs, Courts, and the $133 Billion QuestionBeyond campaign warfare, the Trump administration is wrestling with the fallout from the Supreme Court striking down its sweeping tariff regime. Roughly $133 billion in collected duties now sit in limbo.Officials are reportedly exploring ways to discourage refund claims, stretch out litigation, or even reimpose tariffs under new legal authorities. Trade lawyers argue the government previously committed to repayment with interest and that courts will scrutinize any attempt to sidestep that obligation. This is less about ideology and more about arithmetic. If companies want their money back, they are likely to get it. The administration may find voluntary compliance from firms seeking goodwill, but legally, the leverage is limited. This is the bargaining phase after a judicial loss. The Epstein Depositions BeginHillary Clinton was deposed behind closed doors in Washington as part of the House Oversight Committee's work on the Epstein files. She maintained that she had no knowledge of wrongdoing involving Jeffrey Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell.Democrats are pushing for a full, unedited transcript release to prevent selective leaks from shaping the narrative. Tensions flared when Rep. Lauren Boebert leaked an image of Clinton during the deposition, briefly halting proceedings.Next comes Bill Clinton. For those with long political memories, that sense of history repeating itself is unavoidable. Whether anything explosive emerges remains to be seen, but the optics alone ensure sustained attention.Transactional Politics in Real TimePerhaps the most revealing political maneuver of the week came from New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. In an unscheduled trip to Washington, he reportedly presented President Trump with specific names of detained individuals and requested their release. One Columbia-affiliated detainee was subsequently freed. The broader lesson is something I have observed for years. With Trump, flattery and direct engagement can yield tangible results. Politics is transactional. If you give him a headline he likes or a symbolic win, you may get policy movement in return. Mamdani appears to understand that dynamic.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:27 - Nasty Political Ads00:10:52 - Interview with Kevin Ryan00:51:33 - Update00:51:47 - Tariffs00:53:13 - Clintons00:54:57 - Mamdani and Trump00:59:13 - Interview with Kevin Ryan, con't01:38:33 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. When this Tom Waits song turned up during the closing credits of the latest “Knives Out” movie, Wake Up Dead Man, we heard shouts from all around the Floodisphere: “Whoa! What a great tune that would be for The Flood!”We agree. We only wish we'd thought of it earlier. After all, “Come On Up to the House” has been around for more than a quarter of a century, appearing as the closing track on Waits' 1999 Grammy-winning Mule Variations album. Oh, but how our late co-founder Dave Peyton would have loved to have had a piece of this goofy/gritty gospel groove!A Little Waitsian ExegesisTom Waits, one of the world's smartest songwriters, created a tune chock full of literary and philosophical references, as well as clever cultural shout-outs.Country music lovers, for instance — at least those with long memories — will recognize a kiss being tossed in Tom's repeated line in the chorus: “The world is not my home, I'm just passing through.” Don't get it? Think all the way back to 1962 and to the great Jim Reeves crooning: This world is not my home, I'm just a-passin' through My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue. The angels beckon me from heaven's open door And I can't feel at home in this world anymore. But ”Come On Up to the House” has more on its agenda than simply quoting 60-year-old classics. Waits surely is the only songwriter in the house to zip from 20th century country cool to 17th century political philosophy. What? It's true. By the second verse, the lyrics are reaching back to source material predating Jim Reeves by a good three centuries. Philosophy students perk up when “House” takes a moment to direct our attention to Thomas Hobbes' famously dark assessment of human life: “Nasty, brutish and short.”A Peyton-Worthy Punch LineThe song's funniest, sassiest lines — the ones Dave Peyton certainly would have relished — have the most obscure provenance. Who doesn't smile when Waits' lyrics get to this entreaty: Come down off the cross — We can use the wood! This bit of irreverent humor generally is attributed to the late comedian/satirist Bill Hicks, whom Waits once described as being “like a reverend waving a gun around.”While there's no evidence that the “cross/wood” lines are original with Hicks — some think Lenny Bruce might have fashioned them a couple of decades earlier — it is for sure that Bill popularized the comment in his stand-up routines in the 1980s and early 1990s.And we do know that Tom Waits is a big Bill Hicks fan. In fact, a few years ago when someone asked him to compile a list of his all-time favorite albums, Tom put Hicks' 1990s Rant in E Minor in his top 20.Waits on WaitsFinally, “Come On Up to the House” also has a sample of Tom Waits sampling Tom Waits. The song's line “whipped by the forces that are inside of you” was used in another Waits' song — “Spidey's Wild Ride” — released on 2006's Orphans, Brawlers, Bawlers & B******s album. (This album compiled outtakes that were recorded from 1984 to 2005, so it is possible that song was written before “Come on Up to the House.”)For certain we know that a variation on the line came up in a 2002 newspaper article. Austin Chronicle writer Margaret Moser, interviewing Tom over the phone, asked the songwriter where he was as they spoke. “I'm out on my own recognizance in the day room,” Waits replied, “gluing pieces of macaroni on cardboard and painting it gold. After that I get to make a belt that says, ‘Whipped by the forces within me' on the back.”Ah, aren't we all, Tom? Aren't we all…?More Gospel from The Flood? If all this has you craving a little gospelizing by the boys in the band, remember The Gospel Hour playlist in The Flood's free Radio Floodango music streaming service. In A Nasty Little War: The Western Fight to Reverse the Russian Revolution (Basic Books, 2024), award-winning reporter Anna Reid tells the extraordinary story of how the West tried to reverse the Russian Revolution. In the closing months of the First World War, Britain, America, France and Japan sent arms and 180,000 soldiers to Russia, with the aim of tipping the balance in her post-revolutionary Civil War. From Central Asia to the Arctic and from Poland to the Pacific, they joined anti-Bolshevik forces in trying to overthrow the new men in the Kremlin, in an astonishingly ambitious military adventure known as the Intervention. Fresh, in the case of the British, from the trenches, they found themselves in a mobile, multi-sided conflict as different as possible from the grim stasis of the Western Front. Criss-crossing the shattered Russian empire in trains, sleds and paddlesteamers, they bivouacked in snowbound cabins and Kirghiz yurts, torpedoed Red battleships from speedboats, improvised new currencies and the world's first air-dropped chemical weapons, got caught up in mass retreats and a typhus epidemic, organised several coups and at least one assassination. Taking tea with warlords and princesses, they also turned a blind eye to their Russian allies' numerous atrocities. Two years later they left again, filing glumly back onto their troopships as port after port fell to the Red Army. Later, American veterans compared the humiliation to Vietnam, and the politicians and generals responsible preferred to trivialise or forget. Drawing on previously unused diaries, letters and memoirs, A Nasty Little War brings an episode with echoes down the century since vividly to life. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Mackelly and Simon hope for a soft landing.Chapter Review:Theon Greyjoy sits at the back of the Great Hall of Winterfell, alongside the bard Abel and some of his women. Ser Hosteen Frey bursts through the doors with Little Walder's dead body in his arms and lays him below the dais. A bloody Big Walder and several knights accompany Hosteen. Big Walder says Little Walder went looking for a man who owed him coin from dicing, and it was the Manderlys who taught him the game. Fighting breaks out between the Freys and Manderlys, leaving Lord Wyman Manderly bleeding and several men dead.Lord Roose announces that they will ride out against Stannis, and the Freys and Manderlys will lead the charge. She trades clothing with a washerwoman, who remains behind to keep the numbers accurate, and they walk Jeyne out of the keep.Several of the women go off to find Abel and two go with Theon and Jeyne. One woman stays behind to hold them off, the other takes Theon and Jeyne up the stairs of the outer wall, only to realize she doesn't have the rope to repel down. Send us a textBuzzed Buddy joined us on Inside the Bunghole through its creator, Jay Nixon. Jay broke down the science behind Buzzed Buddy in a way that was approachable, candid, and refreshingly free of hype. He explained how the product supports alcohol metabolism by targeting the toxins created when we drink, rather than interfering with the buzz itself. Built around a simple three-ingredient formula—milk thistle for liver support, L-cysteine for brain protection, and dihydromyricetin (DHM) to help neutralize acetaldehyde—Buzzed Buddy reflects Jay's philosophy of minimalism and efficacy. No “pixie dust,” no unnecessary additives, just ingredients backed by research and centuries of use. What made Jay Nixon such a compelling guest was not just his knowledge, but his perspective. The conversation naturally expanded into how modern drinkers are rethinking balance, wellness, and sustainability—especially as we age and still want to enjoy great wine, cocktails, and long tasting days. From Napa marathons to Vegas nights, Jay spoke honestly about drinking smarter, not less, and about extending our enjoyment of wine for years to come. His appearance added depth to our ongoing journey through wine, reminding us that taking care of the body is just another way of honoring the experience in the glass.Cheers! Eye rolls. Heavy sighs. That sharp, snarky tone that flips your nervous system in half a second. If your teen's “nasty attitude” instantly makes you think disrespect, defiance, or this needs to stop now, this episode will change how you see everything. In Episode #269 of Parenting Teens with Dr. Cam, I kick off a brand-new series unpacking teen behaviors parents punish — even though they're often signs of healthy development. And we're starting with the one that triggers parents the fastest: attitude. Here's the uncomfortable truth most parents were never told: What feels like disrespect in the moment is often your teen's nervous system in overload, paired with a brain that's wired for emotion but still learning regulation. When we shut it down with consequences or lectures, we don't teach respect — we teach defense. And that's where the power struggles, shutdowns, and distance begin. In this episode, I don't just explain why this happens, I walk you through the critical choice every parent faces in those heated moments… and how one response builds walls while the other builds trust. I also introduce the response framework I teach parents inside my COLLABORATE Method™ Parenting Program — the approach that helps you hold boundaries without escalating, shutting down, or saying something you regret five minutes later. If you've ever wondered: Why does my teen get snarky over the smallest things? Am I accidentally making the attitude worse? How do I stop the tone without starting a war? This episode is your wake-up call. Because tonight's “attitude” isn't just about tonight. It's shaping how safe your teen feels communicating with you tomorrow. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE Why teen “attitude” often usually has nothing to do with disrespect — and everything to do with brain development The hidden reason even well-intended questions can trigger snark and shutdown The parenting response that escalates attitude (most parents default to it without realizing) The moment-by-moment choice that determines whether your teen opens up… or closes off WHY THIS MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK Every time your teen gets mouthy, snappy, or sarcastic, one of two things happens. You either: reinforce fear, control, and emotional shutdown or teach regulation, communication, and real respect Most parents were taught the first path. In this episode, I show you the second and explain why it works even when your teen is not at their best.
